Bela-Bela municipal workers protest for better service Lizzy Bapela Employees of the Bela-Bela Local Municipality sang protest songs during their recent strike, where they demanded once again that the Municipality attend to their complaints regarding their working conditions. The protest started at the Public Works office’s entrance, proceeded through town and eventually arrived at the municipal premises during the afternoon of Tuesday, 12 April. The angry workers flocked to the municipality’s doors and continued to chant their slogans, calling for the managers to attend to them. They also damaged the entrance to the building with tree branches and sticks. The protesters stated that they demand that management solve problems regarding their shifts, overtime and standby, benchmarking, the wage curve, basic conditions of service and a strategic planning report. After singing and chanting for some time, the protesters took an hour’s break while they waited for their shop stewards and SAMWU executives to meet with the municipal management. The shop stewards included Elliot Molala, Gosh Rachidumela, Philemon Magoai, Maria Zikhali, and Lazarus Makhubela. Molala addressed the workers prior to their break, informing them that management has requested that they not suspend service delivery during their protest, and said that the management promised to meet with the executive to hear the workers’ demands. The workers said that they are part of the community as well, and said that the municipality’s management should not dictate to them. The municipality’s management could not be reached for comment in the matter, as they were in meetings with the union representatives. The municipality’s Manager for Planning, Precious Raputswa, who is acting as interim Municipal Manager made a brief appearance at the strike.

“We all make mistakes,” Lizzy Bapela A taxi crashed into a house at Bela-Bela’s Extension 5, formerly Mandela Village, on Monday, 11 April. Surprisingly enough, instead of accusations and a court battle, the affected parties negotiated and eventually ended the matter peacefully. The driver and owner of the taxi, Thabo “Bustra” Baloyi was bringing his vehicle to be repaired at the mechanic next to the house where the incident occurred. The mechanic was still busy with another vehicle when Baloyi arrived, and Baloyi parked the taxi and asked to be called when the mechanic was ready for him. Abiolah Vilakazi who works as a welder for the mechanic, who is his brother, decided to drive the taxi in when the mechanic was ready for it, since Baloyi
was still occupied at a nearby salon. In his attempt to drive the taxi into the mechanic’s lot, he crashed into the fence and hit the house next door. The owners were not at home but their daughter, Whitty Moloto, negotiated with the men on their behalf. They agreed that Vilakazi should repair the damage to the home. Vilakazi’s brother agreed to help him with the repairs. When The BEAT enquired on Tuesday, 12 April, the repairs were already underway. The building materials had already been delivered and workers were starting construction. Vilakazi apologized to the family and Baloyi for the events. For his part, Baloyi said that he does not hold a grudge against Vilakazi and considers the matter settled. “We all make mistakes,” he said.

Mokwena had been working as an intern for the 2015/2016 period at the Bela-Bela Police Station. He was responsible for assisting in the implementation of the Safer Schools Project and the establishment of the Youth Desk as well as the Youth CPF within the community, to combat crime among the youth. During his time at the station, Mokwena was a part of the SAPS’ awareness campaigns and school visits. Prior to that, he was a member of the Junior Station

Commissioners’ Programme. He invested his time in alleviating and preventing crime, especially among the youth. “He will be remembered for his hilarious laugh, self-confidence and dedication on his work and most importantly his love for people and life. The Bela-Bela Police are extending their heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathises with the bereaved family in this time of mourning. This young man was indeed a people’s person. He used to put in all his time and energy when engaging in a project, whether big or small,” said the police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto. A memorial service in his honour will be held at the Spa Park Community Hall at 12:00 on Thursday, 14 April and the funeral will be held on Saturday, 16th April, in BelaBela.
Three suspects who were arrested in a special operation on in Modimolle on Monday, 11 April, and who were allegedly found in possession of six high-calibre hunting rifles, were expected to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 13 April on charges of possession of illegal firearm and ammunition. According to Limpopo Police Communication Officer, Colonel Ronell Otto, the suspects were arrested during an intelligence-driven operation with members of the TRT and Modimolle Detectives. The rifles were allegedly stolen during a housebreaking incident at a farm in the Modimolle area about 10 days ago. The owners of the farm were not at home when the suspects broke in, according to Otto. The men are believed to have forced open the safe and taken the firearms and ammunition. “Intensive investigations led to the arrest of
the suspects and the recovery of six of the seven stolen fire arms as well as 121 round of ammunition. A vehicle used during the commission of the crime was also recovered,” added Otto. They were charged with illegal possession of unlicensed fire arms and ammunition. Otto said there were more arrests expected and investigations to link the suspects with other crimes in the area are still on-going. She further said that forensic tests, to determine whether the fire arms were used to commit crimes since they were stolen, will also be done. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo Major General Nonhlanhla Zulu welcomed the arrest and praised the members on the team for their diligence, patience and dedication in tracing the suspects. “The stolen fire arms posed a huge threat to the safety of the communities in the province and might also have been used to shoot animals such as rhino and elephants if the suspects were not arrested,” she said.
Modimolle Victim Support Centre hit by crime
Cathrine Moropa points out to where the wall-mounted safe was located. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane The Modimolle Victim Support Centre fell to victim to crime when criminals allegedly broke into the premises and stole several items. The programme manager at the centre, Cathrine Moropa, said she arrived at work with colleagues on the morning of Wednesday 6 April, and they discovered that a security door was damaged. According to what was discovered by the staff on that day, it seemed that the criminals forced the door open, after tampering with it to gain access. After entering the premises, they found out that some of the items in the offices were missing. Moropa told The BEAT that the missing items included a computer, camera and an
electronic safe which was mounted to the wall. “We reported the matter to the police and a case was opened. We are pleading with members of the community to assist the police. If someone has seen or heard something, they can contact the nearest police so that we can be able to continue serving our community without any difficulties,” Moropa said. She indicated that the stolen items will definitely affect the day to day running of the office. Modimolle Victim Support Centre offers support to among others, community members who are victims of abuse. Modimolle SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay confirmed that a case of business burglary has been opened, and investigations are currently underway.

TK Mashaba, Justin Steyn ANC party infighting once again reared its ugly head when a disagreement between Minister of Public Works Thulasi Nxesi and former Bela-Bela Mayor Hendrietta Ledwaba progressed until the pair apparently came to blows at the constituency office next to Bela-Bela’s Pick n Pay Mall on Saturday, 9 May. According to Ledwaba, she went to the office after spending some time campaigning for residents to register to vote, but when she asked for the party agent list, she was thrown out of the office. “I went there to ask for the list of party agents, but when I arrived at the office, Thulasi was there with some other officers and I was told to get out of the office,”
Ledwaba said. She said that she left the office where the meeting was being held and went to a nearby office. Nxesi allegedly followed her and dragged her out of the office by her jacket. “I said that he doesn’t own the ANC and said that I wouldn’t leave the office until I had what I came for,” Ledwaba said. The police were called to intervene, but no case was opened as, according to Ledwaba, Nxesi apologized after the scuffle. “There are still divisions in our ANC and it is all because of other councillors who are not loyal and grounded to serve the community and that is why there is always conspiracies,” Ledwaba said. The Minister’s office declined to comment, saying that the matter was internal to the ANC.
The ruling ANC party and opposition DA went all-out during the final voters’ registration weekend of Saturday, 9 and Sunday, 10 April to target voters across their jurisdictions. Various activities took place during the weekend, where the parties were targeting everyone who is within the voting age to go out in their numbers and register to vote. The DA Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle led a delegation of DA Members of Parliament, Members of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature, aspirant councillors and activists on a massive door-to-door and Blue Wave campaign targeting unregistered voters across the province. The delegation visited shopping malls, bus stations and taxi ranks, churches and other public places to encourage residents to register during this last registration weekend. Smalle said that this is the crucial time for citizens to bring about change and elect leaders that will respect and uphold the country’s constitution during the Local Government Elections on 3 August. The DA appealed to all residents to register for better a future and promised that they will create jobs for all South Africans who have
been deprived their basic rights to quality services. Meanwhile, the ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Secretary General Gwede Mantashe were also in Limpopo during the weekend, joining the province’s party leaders in their quest to encourage residents to register in order to be eligible to vote. The party called upon people to use the opportunity to verify their registration status and physical addresses. During the same weekend, the ANC engaged in a massive voter registration campaign all over the province. The party deployed its leaders throughout the province in the course of the weekend to encourage communities to register. Mantashe and Ramaphosa attended various activities that took place as campaigns to target voters and in Waterberg, Ramaphosa visited the Mogalakwena Sub-Region on Sunday, 10 April. He attended a briefing session held at the Regional Operational Center, followed by a blitz and walkabout at Mahwelereng shopping Center, then a church visit at the Church of Firstborn The Deputy President also had lunch with Stakeholders at The Park Hotel and then wrapped up the day’s activities with door to door campaigns in wards 31 and 32.
Mayor skips community meeting TK Mashaba Residents of Ward 6 were greatly disappointed when Bela-Bela Mayor Lucas Nhlapo failed to attend a scheduled Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meeting on Monday, 11 April. According to residents, Ward 6 Councillor Jeremiah Ngobeni said that Nhlapo refused to attend for fear of attack from the community. “As everyone knows this meeting was to be presented by the Mayor, but unfortunately he could not attend as he fears that the community will attack him,” Ngobeni said. Ngobeni pledged to invite Nhlapo to address the community again in upcoming meetings. The meeting was to have been about the new developments planned to start in July this year.
Ngobeni said that R8 million has been reserved to develop, among other things, pavements in Leseding and another small community hall. He also asked the community to point out other needed developments. Ngobeni also promised Apollo lights and flush toilets after the local government elections. Attempts to obtain comment from the Mayor or his office were fruitless, and The BEAT received no response to emails to the Municipal Spokesperson.

WoF attend Yellow Card Training Camp Marlene Vermaak Working on Fire (WoF) personnel have organised their yearly Yellow Card Training Camp in Vaalwater this year. Teams from WoF are re-trained to handle veldfires, but not structural fires in towns or cities. The refresher course for all Working on Fire employees started on Monday, 4 April, and will continue until Sunday, 17 April. The venue for the course is at Vaalwater Airfield on the R33 leading towards Lephalale. There is a total of six sessions that will be attended by more than 660 WoF employees from every area in Limpopo. Each group will be on camp for 4 days. “The idea is to replicate real-life situations the employees might encounter while they are actively on duty. This camp will prepare them for the upcoming fire season especially with increased concerns because of the drought we had,” said Phanuel Nkuna, Assistant General Manager of the organisation and person in charge of the camp. “Activities performed during the camp include Fire Drills, fitness tests, the making of fire breaks, and the very dramatic Fire Wall. During the fitness test everyone have to complete a 2,4 kilometre run in the fastest possible time and we recently had a lady move into the first position in Limpopo,” explained Matema Gwangwa, Communications Officer for Working on Fire.

New parents praise hospital’s excellent care
The de Lange family is grateful for the proper care they received from Bela-Bela hospital. Photo supplied Justin Steyn Despite recent bad publicity at Bela-Bela’s state hospital, Bela-Bela residents Francois and Mariska de Lange say they are grateful for the exceptional service they have received at
the town’s government hospital. Francois told The BEAT that on the last weekend of February, they visited family in Polokwane. Francois said that Mariska on started to leak amniotic fluid unexpectedly on the morning of Sunday, 28
February and the couple decided to rush back home. “We arrived in Bela-Bela at about 15:00. We went to the Bela-Bela hospital and the nurses confirmed that Mariska’s amniotic fluid was leaking and she was going into labour,” he said. Francois said Mariska’s labour pains and contractions were too weak and nurses gave her induction to boost the birthing process. “The hospital’s gynaecologist, Dr Raul Fuentes, assisted what can only be described as the very difficult birth of our son. Mariska lost a lot of blood during the birth but the nurses immediately attended to Mariska and supplied her with oxygen and controlled the bleeding.” “Fuentes is an outstanding doctor and if it had not been for him and his team, my wife would have lost her life. Our son, Franco, was born 15:35 on Monday 29th February He weighed 3,1kg and was 53cm long,” said Francois. Mariska said that Franco had difficulty breathing and
and yearly rates are calculated according to the size of the land you own. This gives land owners access to Working on Fire teams at a much more affordable rate,” Nkuna said “Priority is given to the prevention of veldfires so our teams are readily available to assist land owners with Fire Integrated Management plans and firebreaks during any time of the year,” Nkuna said. “Other services provided by the Working on Fire organisation are community fire awareness programmes, free fire education of employees on farms, free fire education in schools and fire training for workers. To receive any of these services please contact the Provincial Dispatch Centre in Limpopo,” Gwangwa explained. Readers in the Waterberg Area can call the Provincial Dispatch Centre on 076 847 3463. This dispatch centre will send out Working on Fire teams during emergencies (veldfires) they also assist with costing and quotations of using Working on Fire teams for Fire Integrated Management and help readers to get in touch with their local Fire Protection Service. If a reader request a full team of people, that will include 25 people of which 3 are leaders and one is a driver. A Stick Team will include 12 people, no driver and two team leaders. The official launch of the 2016 fire season will be held on Friday, 3 June, at the Vaalwater Airfield on the R33 between Vaalwater and Lephalale. The event is free of charge and all members of the public are welcome to attend.
medical personnel used antibiotics, oxygen and ventilators to keep him alive. Further X-rays also revealed a small tear in his right lung. After nearly two weeks of intensive care and back and forth transfers between BelaBela and Polokwane hospitals Francois said Franco is back at home and recovering well. “I want to thank the Bela-Bela hospital’s staff for their excellent and friendly service. I, Mariska and Franco are absolutely happy and could not have asked for better and more professional service.” Francois said he would also like to thank Dr. Ricardo Escobar and Dr. Makananise Khuthadzo for having spent their full attention on Franco. “May the Lord bless you for the wonderful work you are doing. Thank you Dr. Fuentes for working so superbly with Mariska during the difficult birth.” Francois added that the BelaBela hospital has been given too much negative publicity, and that the hospital is not as bad as some people think.
IEC Registration Weekend a rousing success Marlene Vermaak The final IEC Registration Weekend took place this past weekend on 9 and 10 April. In Vaalwater, registration points were only moderately busy, with some IEC employees sitting around for some time with nothing to do. The total of new registrations in the area was 138 235 people registered at Vaalwater who had previously registered in other provinces, while 181 residents attended to ensure that their information was up to date. “In the Modimolle Municipality, more than 2 300 people attended the registration points,” said Johan Abrie of the DA. In Limpopo, only 128 196 people were logged at the registration points. This includes the 32 145 new registrations, 42 995 changed registrations, and 53 056 people who came to confirm their status. Readers who have not registered may visit the IEC offices at their local municipality to register.

Former COSAS leader remembered Lizzy Bapela April 2016 marks the second year since the passing of former COSAS Limpopo leader, the late Resenga Peter Shibambo. He died after a short illness on 11 April 2014, shortly after being appointed an administrator at the local ANC Constituency Office. Shibambo was always in the forefront of politics from an early age, leading the learners’ movement at the local, regional and provincial level from when he was a learner himself, attending at Maope Secondary School. He was very much vocal in matters involving the right of learners, always making sure that the learners’ voice was heard. Shibambo was also community-driven, as he was always actively involved in campaigns such as when he joined the police in a search campaign, visiting local schools to search for drugs and the signs of drug abuse amongst learners. The young and old in the ANC and its progressive alliance structures got to know this fellow young lion and are now commemorating his passing, remembering him with the roles he played in the movement. During his time as COSAS Limpopo Provincial spokesperson, he represented the movement and the learners in a number of media platforms during radio and newspaper interviews. His fellows remembered him by invading social media with messages of commemoration, expressing how dearly they miss him. The BEAT spoke to a few of those who knew him well, to afford them an opportunity to

off of their respective skateboards. After three eliminations, Kruger took third place, Cornelissen at second and Yule as the overall winner of the competition. The event’s organizer, Marnus Lüus, said that the three who were chosen, won skateboards from an anonymous sponsor and will be permitted to receive advance skating lessons. Lüus said that the competitions are held at the end of every month at the Waterfront Skatepark and has invited any interested parties to attend. When asked about the plans to construct a more open skate park as previously planned, Lüus said that this will commence once renovations at the Waterfront Skatepark have been completed.
region, where he led there with the likes of the former provincial chairperson Tebogo Nkomane of Vaalwater. Resenga was one of the militant young people in the province who went head-to-head with the administration of former Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale and former CoGHSTA MEC Soviet Lekganyane. We always looked up to him for such militant actions. Even when we differed politically in his last days of life, we still had time to reflect on what we were aiming to achieve as young people of Bela-Bela,” said former COSAS Regional Chairperson Abram Motlhake. Nkomani remembers Shibambo as a dedicated leader who made politics a priority, especially when he went provincial. “The movement was vibrant in his times but now it seems like it died with him because I for one do not know who is who at all levels. It seems like young people are focusing on obtaining powers at the higher levels in the mother body, forgetting the goals and visions we had in the movement back in the days. I pray and hope that other strong and dedicated young people emerge and put COSAS back on the map in Shibambo’s honour because I think that his peace is disturbed wherever he is resting when he sees what is happening within the movement currently,” Nkomane said. His passing was regarded as a great loss to Bela-Bela, the Waterberg District and the province as a whole and alliances pledged to always remember him for his commitment to youth development and his well-directed radicalism.

Mookgophong teams struggle in SAB League Mokopane Ratanang FC (blue and white jersey) dominates stream B of the Waterberg Regional SAB League. Photo: Mzamane Ringane
Mzamane Ringane It seems like Mookgophong teams are giving way to their Mokopane counterparts in stream B of the Waterberg Regional SAB League, with both Junior Stars and AC Milan struggling to reach the top of the table. Junior Stars lost 1-0 to Sekgakgapheng Young Cosmos at the Mookgophong Stadium on Saturday 9 April. The Mookgophong lads managed to earn a place in the top 8 of the log standings after winning 3-1 during their away game against Simple Yellows on Sunday 10 April. Mookgophong AC Milan shared the spoils with Ditlou FC in a 2-all draw on Saturday, and further dropped maximum points when they lost 1-0 to PJ Stars. AC Milan are now sitting on number 15 in the log standings, with only eight points out of the 16 matches that they have played so far. It is still a tough battle in Stream A of the
league, with Modimolle Home Defenders continuing to consolidate their position on top of the league log even after their massive loss. Home Defenders suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss to Boys 2 Men of Mabatlane on Saturday, but then managed to retain their position with a 3-2 victory against NTK Happy Boys. Modimolle All Stars, who are on the second position, played to a 1-all draw with NTK Happy Boys on Saturday, and managed to collect a crucial three points on Sunday when they hosted Diesel N Dust FC in a 1-0 victory. The fourth-placed Diesel N Dust also lost 2-1 to Bela-Bela Pirates 2-1 the previous day. It will be a difficult task for third-placed Qualitho FC to topple either All Stars or Home Defenders, as they are nine points behind the team on top of the log. Qualitho FC defeated the once-mighty Modimolle Troublemakers 2-1 on Saturday and continued to collect more points after beating Boys 2 Men 4-2 on Sunday.
Nedbank Cup derby for Limpopo Mzamane Ringane The only two Limpopo teams that are left in the prestigious Nedbank Cup competition have been drawn against each other, in a derby that is likely to attract scores of people from various parts of the province. National First Division (NFD) team Baroka FC and Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Polokwane City will meet in the quarter-finals, where both teams will be battling for a spot in the semi-finals. There is a strong element of the Waterberg soccer fraternity in the forthcoming Nedbank Cup clash. Former Modimolle Aces player and now Baroka FC’s midfielder Caswell Chauke will certainly play a crucial role in the Baroka FC technical team’s plans as they face Polokwane City in the Limpopo derby. Chauke was also instrumental in
Baroka FC’s 2-0 victory against PSL side Golden Arrows in the last 16 of the competition. Polokwane City on the other hand defeated Platinum Stars 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals. It is not going to be an easy game when the two teams meet, as the losing team will be sent packing from the competition. On the positive side, it is guaranteed that Limpopo will have a team that will advance into the semi-finals between Baroka FC and Polokwane City. Baroka FC has a reputation of upsetting PSL teams, as they had previously knocked Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows out of this prestigious competition. This NFD side also stands a good chance of gaining automatic promotion into the PSL, as they are still on top of the log with only six games left before the end of their league season.
