Bela-Bela mayor to engage BBTF on Ramaphosa correspondence

The meeting is a direct sequel to fullpage BBTF advertisements published in both The BEAT and our sister newspaper, The Post. In the adverts Mills placed on record that the BBTF had formally asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene in alleged maladministration in the town. Mills said in an interview on Monday

12 March there had been contact between the mayor and him, with the purpose to schedule the meeting mid-week. The community-based BBTF pressure group’s adverts ran under the theme “A bankrupt Bela-Bela? (Is this our future?)”. In the advert, Mills placed on record that correspondence had been dispatched to the President of the Republic “taking him up on his promise to ensure a clean and honest administration.” Mills said the BBTF further asked Ramaphosa to help “his” town in the struggle for economic survival against “a reckless, lawless, spendthrift municipal management.” Ramaphosa owns a game farm on the

outskirts of Bela-Bela. A host of damning allegations, among these, that the council and officialdom did not know what happened to a quarter of the 2016/2017 budget, formed part of the adverts. The BBTF also alleged the disputed KPMG report had been “hidden from the public for 10 months”. A clarion call was also sent out to communities across the political spectrum to make their voices heard. Bela-Bela municipal spokesperson, David Raborolo, was on Monday not immediately available to confirm the anticipated meeting between the mayor and BBTF.

Waterberg abuzz with voter registration TK Mashaba Voter apathy seemed to have been buried with the departure of former President Jacob Zuma, with the IEC noting last weekend as one of the busiest polls registration period in recent years. It has been an open secret that since President Cyril Ramaphosa rose to power the South African nation had suddenly woken up from slumber. Of the statistics released by the IEC, a total of no less than 2,76-million citizens visited voting stations either to register as new voters, or update their registration. The social scene, taxis and churches across the Waterberg have been abuzz with

people declaring how they were looking forward to voting this time around, as a direct result of the Ramaphosa euphoria. However, that could not be said of the upwards of 490 000 new voters under the age of 30, whose profile should include born-frees and militant #FeesMustFall radicals, whose average vote was expected to be split across the main political parties, namely the ANC, DA and EFF. “The Electoral Commission would like to thank the millions of South African voters for their overwhelming response to the call to update the voters’ roll ahead of next year’s elections,” the IEC said in a statement. Then there were well over 1, 39-million voters who re-registered, meaning an

overwhelming number of these could be ANC supporters who had previously boycotted the polls. Gauteng recorded the highest number of new voters at 23,69 percent, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 18,78 percent, with Limpopo at 17,03 percent. Political analysts have warned that voters in KZN were likely to “punish” the ANC, for failing to elect into its top six someone from the coastal province. Waterberg and the broader Limpopo have been declared Ramaphosa country. The Electoral Commission believed that such a high turnout, with more than a year until the next general elections, bodes “extremely well” for participation in next year’s elections.

Rumours laugh off listeriosis reports TK Mashaba The rumour mill and social media have been in overdrive with regards to the cold meat products found to have traces of listeriosis. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi dropped a bombshell two weeks ago when he made the announcement, fingering the Enterprise processed food factory in the Limpopo capital of Polokwane. In Bela-Bela and Modimolle fingers have been pointed at certain unnamed grocery outlets, accusing them of offering massive discounts on the prohibited products.

The BEAT team did not have the courage to test these questionable allegations with the police. Oops! Of concern to many consumers were the allegations that certain unnamed retail stores refused to accept and refund the processed food products such as polony, russian and viennas, without proof of a receipt. However, of relief to those affected, other reports suggested certain retailers were willing to accept and refund the food products without a receipt, apparently on the understanding that consumers did not keep a file of the slips. The masterpiece, perhaps, was a “death

certificate” circulating on social media of the deceased, with “polony” as the cause of death. May his/her soul rest in pieces! Another popular one on social media was a post which simply read “this message was deleted because it contained polony.” The BEAT’s front page package of a picture and tongue-in-cheek caricature was also a hit with readers. Reporters received Facebook and Whatsapp comments, ranging from congratulating us on a job well done, to downright laughter at the car park attendant enjoying the popular sephatlo sandwitch, without the prohibited products, of course.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s invitation to EFF leader Julius Malema to return to the ANC has raised eyebrows all-round. The BEAT embarked on a snap survey to find out how armchair critics make sense of it all. Bela-Bela ANC veteran and grassroots organiser par excellence, Henrietta Ledwaba, moved swiftly to support Ramaphosa’s call for the red berets’ commander-in-chief to return to the party. “I fully support my president’s call that Malema should return to the ANC,” she said. Ledwaba, who has known Malema personally as the erstwhile leader of the ANC Youth League, said the EFF leader had worked hard to build the youth structure. Surprisingly, Ledwaba said the ANC Youth League is “dead” and no longer functioning. The present incumbent at the ANC Young Lions is Collen Maine, who appeared to have fizzled out of the political mainstream following the downfall of his hero, former President Jacob Zuma. “The ANC Youth Leqague needs him (Malema) back,” she charged. The BEAT Editor, Johnny Masilela, who has worked widely as political reporter for the mainstream press, warned it was preelection high season and campaigning was at full steam. He said the space had already been squeezed around Malema, starting with the State of the Nation address, when Ramaphosa jokingly referred to the EFF leader as the deputy chair of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). There was no such position as the “deputy” chair of the NCOP. “That’s Cyril for you. He presents himself as Mr Nice Guy and when the guard is lowered, he goes for the jogular. The objective here is very clear: Ramaohosa wants to unsettle the EFF and make them look unreasonable,” he said. Bela-Bela EFF member, Sunday Modike said: “It feels good to see the ANC going all out to rally for Malema’s return to the party. It is a plan to get us all back to the party. This means they feel the preasure that the EFF is putting on them and wants all our party’s membership. They know that everything our leader says happens so they are scared the EFF’s success will be the ANC’s downfall”. Die Pos/The Post publisher, Bea Emslie said: “Nelson Mandela wrote in Long Walk to Freedom: If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner. Wise words”. She suggested that was perhaps Ramaphosa’s idea in luring Malema back to the ANC, wondering out loud if “the young and arrogant” Malema is going to fall for it. “Only if the ANC can offer him political and financial status. In his red uniform, he is indeed a man who likes a very expensive watch on his wrist, and there are rumours that the EFF’s finances are in rags,” Emslie added. Ramaphosa remarked during a voter registration drive on Sunday 11 March, that the ANC would welcome Malema back with open arms, should the EFF leader decide to ditch his party. The ruling party expelled Malema in 2012, but now the ANC leadership, among them Deputy President David Mabuza, and party veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, were inviting Malema back. In response Malema mocked at the invitation, saying in a tweet, “I won’t do it, that thing (ANC) is dead.”

Stunned passersby scurried for cover from the car chase Lizzy Bapela A true-life drama unfolded in Bela-Bela with locals shocked and awed by a daylight high-speed car chase, through the town and then into the local township. According to traffic officer Simon Mokhonoana, it all started south of the Waterfront on Thursday 8 March, when he and colleague, Solly Ngobeni, stopped a motorist. After checking the disc and plate numbers, the traffic officers suspected foul play. The driver was ordered to get out of the car, for purposes of questioning him. “As we were about to take him to our own vehicle, the motorist hurriedly ordered two of his passengers to leave the car, and subsequently u-turned and sped off back towards the Waterfront,” he explained.

New hope for Spar reconstruction Residents will likely be able to make a shopping trip again to the new Spar before the end of the year. Photo: Andries van der Heyde Andries van der Heyde Bela-Bela shoppers will in all likelihood be able to walk through the new doors of Spar before the end of the year, after mopping up operations kicked in to rebuild the store. The Superspar building was destroyed by a raging inferno last September. Another unfolding drama is the possibility of court battles over insurance and municipality issues. Also, former workers converged on the premises on Tuesday 13 March, voicing concern about labour issues. They said the Department of Labour was being engaged for advice, and that a report back would be provided shortly. The workers were scheduled to meet again next Tueseday. Bela-Bela residents and firefighters watched helplessly when the building went up in flames, allegedly due to lack of water in the pipelines, and equipment which did not function. The fire brigade’s only option was to rush to various emergency reservoirs in town to get water, but to no avail. Tinus Ras, DA councilor in Bela-Bela, said he acted as the insurance consultant, as part of PSG consultants, for part of the building’s claim and that the claim had been successful. He said mopping up operations had commenced and construction plans are in place. Once construction is complete, Spar owner Carel Coetzee and his team will resume management. The other part of the building’s insurance claim (that of Wiehahn and Carel Coetzee) was handled by another insurance firm, but it was denied due to alleged issues with the occupation certificate, Ras had said. One source said if the certificate had never been issued, it means that the shopping centre was built right under the noses of the municipality without their knowledge. “If the municipality didn’t issue the certificate, SuperSpar wouldn’t have had electricity and would have been banned from conducting business,” Ras said. According to him the SuperSpar building plans are available at the municipality, but there is no stamp of authorisation or signature that shows that it was legitimate. “Up to this point, the municipality can’t

establish whether the plans were authorised or not, and this led to the delays,” said Ras. He further said the part of the building nearest to the Tops liquor store is earmarked for the new Spar. Municipal spokesperson Kabelo Mosito has told The BEAT’s sister newspaper, The Post, the municipality have submitted all the documents that were requested from them by Spar management and will cooperate should they request more information. Carel Coetzee said evidence with regards to the building was handed over in December 2017 to the municipal manager, but no rectifications were ever done. According to him there is enough evidence suggesting that the plans were in fact authorised and the municipality failed to give it a stamp of approval. Coetzee said he has already sought legal advice for a pending court case against the parties that were involved during the SuperSpar centre establishment in 2008/ 2009. Legal advice was also being sought with regards to the insurance claim and the role of the municipality. He could not provide further details as the matter was sub judice. But he did confirm that he will still be involved in the management of the new Spar. “We are looking forward to serving the community once again,” he said. He further said the staff had been involved in various community projects from September 2017 to February this year, and had put in a total of 74 000 hours of community service. “It was an honour for us and our staff to have served the community in this way. A community which has supported us all these years,” Coetzee said. Concerning the previous staff Coetzee said: “Every member of staff was paid in full, but due to the insurance claim that has failed, we had no choice but to let them go. This had a negative impact on our community projects, but we will carry on with projects in the future – even if it’s on a smaller scale.” The Spar head office had recently granted financing to the Istores group (of which the owners of Bela-Bela SuperSpar has been part of for 34 years), in order for the construction to continue, even against the backdrop of court proceedings.

In the township passersby dashed into nearby yards for cover, as the speeding fugitive once again burnt rubber, screeching into Moraka Street (Line Four). Mokhonoana said when the fugitive apparently realised he could not drive faster than the traffic cops, he abandoned

his car near Khabele Primary School, and fled on foot towards Moloto Street.When another traffic officer who arrived with police re-enforcements, Eliot Mosiamedi, gave chase on foot, the fugitive spun around, pointing a firearm, forcing him to retreat and take cover. No shots were fired. The fugitive continued to run towards Moloto Street, where he disappeared into shrubs. The fugitive was on Tuesday 13 March still at large. On further inspection of the getaway vehicle, it was found that the car was reported hijacked in the Westenberg suburb of Polokwane. The two female passengers in the alleged hijacker’s car were hitch-hikers who did not know the driver. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of the Bela-Bela SAPS said investigations continued.

Lizzy Bapela The Working on Fire Limpopo’s (WoF) fire fighting team based at the Marakele National Park in Thabazimbi had the pleasure to be visited by students from UNISA, who they empowered with fire fighting skills. The conservation students wanted to learn more about nature and conservation, as well as integrated fire management systems. As part of the tour, the students also attended a workshop conducted by the fire-fighters, where they learned about fire behaviour, fire suppression and personal fire safety. WoF Limpopo Provincial spokesperson, Matema Gwangwa, remarked that the fire-fighters had a

fabulous session with the students as they showed passion on learning what WoF was all about. She added that the level of discipline showed by the students was remarkable. “Part of the training included the fire suppression exercise working on live flames. They were also taught about the type of clothing or attire to wear when going to the fire line; and the different types of tools used in fire fighting. “We hope the students will share the skills and information they acquired with their families and peers,” Gwangwa said. As part of their plan to reduce wildfires, WoF Limpopo embarked on various campaigns with the objective of reducing the wildfires across the province.

Menyatso dynasty eyes the youth

TK Mashaba Hot on the heels of the shockwaves triggered by listeriosis, health authorities have warned that six human cases of rabies have been confirmed since December 2017. The National Institute for Communable Deseases (NCID) said in a statement the cases had been confirmed in Limpopo, among other provinces. “These cases were recorded in patients from Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu Natal (two cases) and the Eastern Cape. “Another probable case of rabies was reported from the Free State in December 2017, involving a patient who presented and died with the clinical diagnosis of rabies and suffered an exposure to a domestic cat before falling ill,” the NCID said in a statement. In the Free State incident, the NCID said laboratory confirmation was not possible due to the lack of appropriate specimens to do so. The six rabies cases mentioned involved exposures to rabid domestic dogs (3 cases) and domestic cats (3 cases). “As humans become infected after contact with rabid dogs and cats, the first line of defence against the infection is to ensure that these animals are protected against the infection and cannot transmit the virus. “Rabies vaccination of domestic dogs and cats is mandatory by law in South Africa, and the onus is on pet owners to ensure that their pets are vaccinated on schedule,” the statement added.

TK Mashaba Bela-Bela funeral services guru George Menyatso is a man with big ideas and a heart full of philanthropy. Speaking in an interview on his farm situated between Bela-Bela and Radium, Menyatso took The BEAT on a tour of his granite factory which employs upwards of 30 workers.

Overall the Menyatso group of companies, which includes a number of funeral parlours, employs just over 60 workers. At the farm the workers transform raw granite rocks into table tops, kitchen tops and tombstones. He said one of the main objectives of setting up the factory three years ago, was to find a way to empower unemployed youths to consider selling the polished granite products for a healthy profit.

He said by manufacturing the granite products from raw rock, it would be produced cheaper, and then some of the profits passed on to small business operators. The Menyatso business dynasty has also diversified into other ventures such as the sale of chemicals and cleaning materials, through the Selahle Chemicals and Cleaning Materials, which has also opened up job opportunities for several Bela-Bela locals.

Foundation hosts fun run Mzamane Ringane The Modimolle-based nonprofit organisation, Paul Dave Foundation, will host a fun run on Saturday, 17 March at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium. The event will serve as a fundraiser to support the foundation’s initiatives, which include among others, the provision of school uniforms for learners and mentorship programmes for high schools.

The fun run will be categorised into three events, namely 2,5km (R10 registration fee), 5km (R20) and 10km (R30). The first 50 fun run participants to register would be offered free-of-charge branded T-shirts. All participants who finish the race would receive medals. Paul Dave Foundation CEO and founder Karabo Mokgosi said they planned that the event would also feature aerobics, soccer matches and indigenous games, as part of the activities for the day. Mokgosi said the organisers were targeting around 150 participants, but indicated that they would accommodate beyond that number if need be. The starting and finishing points of the fun run will be the local stadium, with the other activities also taking place during the course of the day.

Danone Nations Cup fixtures to be unveiled TK Mashaba Fixtures for the much-awaited Warmbaths education circuit of the Danone Nations Cup were expected to be released the latest by this forthcoming weekend. South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) regional co-ordinator, Sekatudi Kgwebane, said it had emerged at a meeting held on Wednesday 7 March that all the primary schools in the circuit were keen to take part. Registration continued to steam ahead this week. The SASFA regional leadership was scheduled to meet again on Saturday 17

March to draw up and release the fixtures for the preliminary stages of the under-12 schoolboys’ dream Danone Nations Cup. Saturday’s meeting would be a prelude to the provincial finals scheduled for the Limpopo capital of Polokwane on Saturday, 2 June. The preliminary stages of the Danone Nations Cup would kick-off in the Northern Cape town of Upington on Saturday 14 April. The international finals were scheduled to be staged in Spain next year, where Danone was first established 100 years ago. In South Africa, the national finals would be staged in Gauteng on 15 September.

Mzamane Ringane Following an impressive 2-0 win over the Western Cape’s SAFA ABC Motsepe League contenders, Steenberg United, PSL side Baroka FC remains the sole Limpopo representative in the Nedbank Cup. The second-placed SAFA second division team was sent packing from the lucrative tournament last Saturday, 10 March, when they visited bAKGAGA ba Ga-Mphahlele at Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium. Caretaker coach, MacDonald Makhubedu, who has been in charge since the team parted ways with head coach Kgoloko Thobejane, steered the team to

an all-important victory. Baroka were this week looking forward to the draw for the quarter-finals of the dream Nedbank Cup. Since the appointment of Makhubedu, the Limpopo team remains unbeaten, with two wins and three draws in the PSL league race. Last weekend’s victory over Steenberg United was the third since the caretaker coach took charge of the team. Baroka FC started off their Nedbank Cup journey by eliminating fellow PSL campaigners, Platinum Stars with a 1-0 victory, during the last 32 stages of the tournament. Two other teams from the home province made an early exit from the tournament. SAFA Mopani Region’s SAB League side Mariveni United was eliminated by Eastern Cape’s ABC Motsepe League team EC Bees, while Polokwane City was beaten by First National Division side Ubuntu Cape Town. Ubuntu Cape Town is currently the toast of the Nedbank Cup, after eliminating another PSL side, Amazulu fom the multimillion rand tournament.

Letter to the editor Malesela Musana writes: Patriotism is the spirit by which a citizen loves his/her country to the extent that he/she is ready to die for. Our politicians howl at each other in council chambers, fighting for greener pastures, in the process ingnoring the core mandate from grassroots constituencies. This is because some of our councillors are ignorant, smart-for-nothing material that has no value. Some seem to have entered politics to loot state funds meant for service

delivery. They hoodwink communities while waiting with bated breath for their next salary. Most of our councillors are not true patriotis. Many of them target opportunities like hungry vultures circling a carcass. These types of councillors have to vacate their positions. We need councillors of the highest standards, with the desire to serve the people properly and justly. Let us stand up, walk tall and rebuild South Africa.

SAB League headed for a tight finish Mzamane Ringane Modimolle Troublemakers FC gave way to Bela Bela Diesel N Dust FC after dropping to second position on the log standings this past weekend. Diesel N Dust FC rose to the summit of the Waterberg’s SAB League, following their 1-all stalemate with Modimolle Celtic FC last Saturday 10 March. The status quo at the top of the log may still change at any given time, as both Diesel N Dust FC and Troublemakers are sitting on position one and two respectively, with 30 points each. Volleyball squad advances to semis TK Mashaba The Limpopo Volleyball squad – featuring eight players from Bela-Bela – has advanced to the semi-finals of the national championships in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The players have triggered a buzz in the home town, after their action footage was shown on national TV. The Mapungubwe Warriors, as the Limpopo squad is affectionately known, played in round-robin matches against Mpumalanga Buffalos, beating the latter 30, and went on to thrash the Northern Cape’s Diamond Kudus 3-0. The remaining top four teams for the semi-finals are Mapungubwe Warriors, KwaZulu-Natal Rhinos, Western Cape

TK Mashaba The Sports Excellence (Sportex) initiative got off the ground during a dress rehearsal at the Sunfa Stadium at BelaBela from Saturday, 3 March, to Sunday, 4 March. A total of eight teams took part in the trial run, ahead of the formal games planned for the Easter Weekend. According to Sportex co-ordinator, Nakedi Baloyi, the rehearsal was part of the tournament. The teams taking part included Real Madrid FC, Real Rovers FC, Samba Boys

FC, Barcelona FC, Blue Birds FC, Platinum Stars FC, All Stars FC and Mandela Kids FC. All these teams are already registered for the major events over the holidays. Baloyi said registration was still open to other interested teams. Players registering for the tournament were required to bring along a birth certificate, ID cvopy, proof of residence, and the contact numbers for a parents or guardian. One the strict rules for the tournament are that a player would not be allowed to move from one team to the other for duration of the games.

The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Football Association (LFA) has officially unveiled a soccer tournament, which would kick-off on Saturday 17 March in Modimolle. A total of 14 teams will get the opportunity to battle it out for trophies and medals. Modimolle-Mookgophong LFA chairperson, Hlupi Lehong, said the next leg of the tournament will be launched in Mookgophong and Vaalwater in coming weeks. Lehong commended the business community for donating soccer balls, trophies and medals to make this tournament possible. He told The BEAT businessmen Tsongo Maremane, Joe Maremane, Mokopane resident Simon Maremane, and Modimolle resident Edwin Mogoane, collectively contributed prizes for the tournament. “We are hoping this tournament will inspire young people and encourage them to participate in sports, especially soccer. Young people are safer when they are at soccer fields. Being sports-active also helps

them to do better in school,” he said. Mogoane said one of the reasons why he got involved in this development was because of the dedication and passion shown by the youth. “As a parent, I would prefer to see children doing something constructive about their lives than roaming the streets. The aim is to encourage these youngsters to come together and do something positive, than to sit under a tree and do drugs and alcohol,” he said.
