Waterberg ablaze
Fire claims Working on Fire member Massive fires laid waste to enormous swathes of land in the Waterberg. An estimated 70 000 hectares were reduced to ashes over the weekend of 10-12 October. Photo supplied
Marlene Vermaak A firefighter with Working on Fire, Modikwe Samuel Ramokgaba (35) passed away after being badly burned on Sunday, 11 October. He was overtaken by the flames at around 17:00 and was seriously injured. “Ramokgaba was taken by helicopter to the Bela-Bela Hospital, but unfortunately passed away at 23:00 that evening,” said Matema Gwangwa, provincial media spokesperson for Working on Fire. “Ramokgaba came from Swartklip near
Northam, and leaves behind his mother and two children.” The South African Police Services have been informed of the incident, and a complete investigation of the circumstances surrounding Ramokgaba’s death will be launched. “The Working on Fire team went down into a valley to set a counterfire on Ertjies Greyling’s farm in an attempt to stop the fire,” said Michael du Plessis. “I was at the top of the mountain when the people in the valley started screaming. I got a terrible fright and started running in that direction to see if I could help. At the same time my
brother, Willie, rushed to the nearest area with cellphone reception to summon Working on Fire’s helicopter.” “I immediately realized that someone was in danger and possibly hurt, and was expecting the worst. There were already members of the Working on Fire team helping Samuel. He was covered with a fire blanket. I sat with him and tried to keep him calm while we waited for the helicopter. He was shivering terribly,” said an emotional Du Plessis. “We had been fighting the fire since Thursday,” said landowner Willie du Plessis. “By Monday night, large areas were still on
fire. We are very grateful for everyone who helped us during the fire, and we are very sorry for the loss of the Working on fire member.” Wimpie Cilliers (35) from the farm Maranatha near Vaalwater, was also nearly trapped by the blaze. Fortunately Cilliers did not sustain any other serious injuries – only scorched hair, blisters, and a skin that is sunburn-red. “A sudden whirlwind had the fire around me in seconds, and suddenly the fire was moving faster than I could run,” said Cilliers. Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court sentences criminals Illegal immigrant Godfrey Frutso Phiri was recently sentenced to four months imprisonment or a R2 000 fine. Photo supplied
Lizzy Bapela An accused in a case of entering or remaining in a country without valid documents, 26-year old Godfrey Frutso Phiri, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment or a fine of R2 000 when he appeared in court recently. Police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto said that the accused was also linked with a case of burglary where it is alleged that he stole copper cable. The incident took place at a mining engineering workshop between 23 and 24 September. Constable Maleto said that Godfrey remained in custody for failing to produce the relevant documents allowing him to be in the country, and pending the business robbery. * A 55-year old man was sentenced to three months in prison or a fine of R2 000 after stealing a 200 ml bottle of methylated spirits from Bela-Bela Super Spar on 25 September. The police said that a security guard alleged that he had seen a suspicious man roaming the shelves with the spirits. The guard monitored the accused, Martin Barnard, as he passed the pay point to go out of the store. He was searched and was found with the item concealed in his pants. He was arrested immediately and charged
for theft. * A 31-year old woman was sentenced to six months imprisonment or a fine of R1 000. Annah Seropodi was reportedly found in possession of suspected stolen property at Super Spar recently. According to the information received, the store’s security was alerted by his colleague about a suspicious woman wearing a floral dress. She passed the pay point and went towards exit door as though she was walking out of the store. The guard alleged that he got very suspicious when he saw her seemingly walking with some difficulties he told the police that he searched her and found some grocery concealed underneath her clothes. She was found in possession of rice, sugar, tinned food, floor polish, and cigarettes and was arrested immediately and charged. * 34-year old Simon Mahlangu was sentenced to six months imprisonment or a R3 000 fine for malicious damage to property. Mahlangu knocked on his sister’s door on 23 May in the evening. Constable Maleto said that after seeing who was knocking on the door, the sister did not want to open the door for him as she feared that he might attack her because she had a fight with his wife earlier that day, and said that he was armed with a spade. She added that Mahlangu then climbed on top of the roof and damaged the two iron sheets with the spade and poured petrol as though he wanted to set the house alight. The police were called to the scene immediately and the suspect was arrested. * A man was sentenced to four months imprisonment or a fine of R2 000 after he was found guilty of hitting another man with a brick at the back of head, causing injuries. The victim was sent to the BelaBela Hospital for medical attention while the 21-year old Stoffel Toto Mashele got arrested and charged.
Two women were arrested at Bela-Bela after being found in possession of suspected stolen property. The incident occurred at Bela-Bela during the morning of Wednesday, 7 October. The complainant told the police that she had returned home to find that her home had been broken into. Among the missing items were a laptop, an iPod, towels, a pack of disposable nappies, and a USB flash drive. Police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto said that the police received information on Friday, 9 October that someone had been seen selling suspected stolen property in Extension 5, and followed up on the lead. She said that on their arrival at the scene the police found two Zimbabwean nationals with the items, which are believed to be the ones missing from the complainant’s house. The suspects are in police custody and are expected to appear before the BelaBela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 October. * A suspect in Bela-Bela was arrested

The man, who was known only as ‘William’ during police investigations, has been identified as William Motsokotsa Moikanyane, a 29-year old man from Pankop outside of Pienaarrivier. “Fingerprint results revealed that the man who was killed by some Pienaarsrivier community members in late August was Williema Motsokotsa Moikanyane from Pankop,” said Bela-Bela police spokesperson Maria Maleto. Moikanyane was allegedly murdered by twelve community members in Pienaarsrivier

Moikanyanye was laid to rest on Saturday, 10 October in Pankop.
5-year old girl raped TK Mashaba Two Bela-Bela boys aged around 10 have briefly appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case of rape. The two, who were accompanied by their parents at the court, are alleged to have raped a five-year old girl at Bela-Bela on Saturday, 10 October. According to the victim’s mother, she was told about the incident by younger child. “After I heard the news I went to check on my daughter,” she said. “I found her lying in her bed crying. She couldn’t say a word to me.” The mother said that she had a hard time getting help from police, who kept promising that they would attend to the case until she, exasperated, took the five year-old child to hospital herself. “When I arrived at Bela-Bela hospital the doctors wouldn’t help me,” she told The BEAT. “They said I have to bring the police with me.” “I was very disappointed by the service we received from these institutions,” she said. “The police couldn’t come and at the hospital they wouldn’t help either. I took my daughter back home and when I went back on Sunday the doctor told me that he couldn’t find any evidence because I had given my child a bath.” The mother said that she, too, had been raped when she was a child and was not helped, and she is frustrated to see her daughter in this situation. “Things like this can leave one with

emotional scars,” she said. During a visit to the Bela-Bela hospital, The BEAT’s reporters were unable to find anyone willing to comment on the situation, or explain why the doctors on duty would refuse to treat the little girl. “We deeply regret what happened,” said Macks Lesufi, spokesperson for the Department of Health in Limpopo. “We are looking into the situation and trying to find out from the hospital exactly what happened. We will also be engaging with the child’s family in order to help them and provide for such things as trauma counselling.”

and linked with a case of theft from motor vehicle through fingerprints. 25 year old Fana Mabunda was arrested on Wednesday, 7 October for the crime, which was allegedly committed between 26 and 27 May at Leseding Section. The complainant alleged that he had locked the doors and windows of his vehicle, only to find the back door unlocked the next morning. He said that when he checked further, he realized that several items, including a car radio, speakers, and a subwoofer were missing. Mabunda was placed at the scene of the crime through fingerprints left at the scene, and appeared at the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 8 October. * The police in Modimolle are looking for a suspect in connection with a case of armed robbery following an incident that took place during the afternoon of Sunday, 30 August. Modimolle Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said that the complainant told them that an unknown man had approached him and snatched his phone while he was talking on it. Anyone with information that may help the police solve the case should visit the station and ask for Warrant Officer Gawie Greeff.
The police in Modimolle have asked residents to be on the lookout for this man. He is around 30 years of age, and missing a front upper tooth. The man is alleged to have snatched a cellphone from a Modimolle man while the latter was making a call.

Over 70 000 hectares of land destroyed as fire ravages the Waterberg
Entabeni Lodge near Mookgophong sustained serious damage. Photo supplied Lizzy Bapela Roughly 70 000 hectares of land was destroyed by wildfire this past weekend, despite valiant efforts by Limpopo firefighters. The fires raged across the province on Saturday, 11 October, with most falling within the Waterberg area. The Department of Environmental Affairs’ Working on Fire (WoF) participants in Limpopo have been frantically battling blazes across the province. WoF Limpopo’s provincial spokesperson Matema Gwangwa confirmed that the most
affected areas in the Waterberg are situated between Modimolle, Alma, and Vaalwater, as well as areas from Mokopane to Thabazimbi. The past weekend has been a busy one for Working on Fire teams in the Waterberg. A heat wave was declared by the South African Weather Services, and a total of 260 fire fighters, a chopper, two fire trucks, six bakkies and bakkies sacks were deployed to multiple fires in various parts of the region. WoF Limpopo Provincial General Manager Sam Maepa said that their firefighters have been thoroughly trained in fire suppression, and believe that they will succeed in protecting the

He told The BEAT that an Incident Command Structure has been established and based at Alma, where teams are monitoring fires and allocating resources. Maepa said that some of the fires were cause by lightning while in other cases, the cause remains unknown. “Our firefighters are working in difficult terrain. The terrain is mountainous and the fires are fast. The damage so far is an estimated 70 000 hectares of land, a farmhouse, three houses, three vehicles, two lodges and a large number of domestic and wild animals,” he said.
Gwangwa indicated that Working on Fire has requested more resources from other provinces due to the intensity and number of fires currently occurring. The resources they have received so far includes four ground teams with fire trucks from Mpumalanga and a ground team from Gauteng. Maepa said that they are working closely with various stakeholders who are affected, and are hoping for a positive outcome. He pleaded with the public to heed evacuation orders immediately when wildfires approach residential areas.

Man killed by elephant

Marlene Vermaak Samuel Shidenge (36) was tragically killed by an Elephant in the Welgevonden Game Reserve between Vaalwater and Lephalale on Tuesday, 6 October. “We asked Samuel to fetch thatching workers at a lodge in Welgevonden. He was on his way out of the reserve when, according to the workers, they saw an elephant on the road. Samuel immediately stopped and switched the bakkie off, as this is standard procedure during an elephant encounter,” his brotherin-law, Niel Mokhabela explained. Mokhabela said that according to their workers another game-viewing vehicle drove past that aggravated the elephant. The animal then stormed the bakkie Shidenge was in. “Samuel apparently tried several times to start the bakkie and reverse away as the angry elephant was approaching but had no luck. The workers jumped off and ran in different directions but Samuel was the last to leave the vehicle. The elephant was seen to pursue him as he ran away on foot and must have killed him in the bush,” Makhabela said.
Samuel was a hardworking citizen from Zimbabwe, with a legal work permit and passport. He owned his own thatching business and also helped his brother and me with our businesses. He has a young wife and twin daughters, age 3, as well as a son in Zimbabwe that he was taking care of,” Mokhabela explained. “I am very worried that because my brother-in-law was a foreigner nothing will be done about this incident. We are very sad about his loss. I also hope that Welgevonden will put in extra effort to warm people about the dangers of the animals and that this can be a lesson for all,” Mokhabela said. “It is with great sadness that Welgevonden Game Reserve has to announce that on the evening of Tuesday, 6 October 2015 there was a tragic death of a contractor in the reserve. It appears as though the person was on foot when he was killed by an elephant. The circumstances of this tragic incident are still under investigation. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased,” said Welgevonden Chief Executive Officer, Bradley Schroder. An official burial ceremony will take place in Zimbabwe.

Residents are being supplied by water tankers in parts of Modimolle. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Residents of Modimolle have been hit hard by the recent water crisis in the area, with the municipality issuing a press release to give further clarity on the issue. The press release was issued by the Modimolle Local Municipality’s Communications and IT Department on Wednesday 7 October. “Modimolle Local Municipality is experiencing water shortage due to the extreme heat wave and the high demand for water in our area. Water supply has been interrupted in various wards in Phagameng and the town,” the municipality stated in a press release. “The problem occurred when the main pipe line from Donkerpoort Plant burst. The burst main line was repaired and full production was restored on Thursday 1 October 2015. Our storage reservoirs are at critical level. Consumers may expect reduced water supply in the form of dry taps. Water tankers will be available for supply of water to the community” Residents were also urged to use water cautiously until such time as the situation is remedied.
“We are urgently appealing to all consumers to use water sparingly until the situation stabilises. Please refrain from watering gardens and restrict water consumption to household use, i.e. bathing, drinking and food preparation”, the press release concluded. Residents rely on water tankers who supply them at certain delivery points in Phagameng Township, while others settle for communal taps at the old beehive centre in the area. In a telephone interview with The BEAT on Monday 12 October, municipal spokesperson Patrick Shika said the situation was slowly getting back to normal. The municipal spokesperson said the biggest challenge was the high demand of water in the area. He said some residents in various parts of the township already have water on their taps, and also reiterated that the municipality is pleading with residents to use water for basic needs only, until such time that the whole area has been fully restored. However, Shika said he cannot guarantee when exactly the situation will return to normal.

Justin Steyn Marnus Luüs, a young businessman from Bela-Bela, seeks to establish various recreational facilities in town. This includes a skateboard rink, where young people can spend time in a healthy way. He told The Beat that he is still looking for suitable land to construct the rinks in places like open municipal ground or land not currently being used for something. “Young people spend much of their time in bars, or buy drugs. I would like to set up facilities like this where they can spend their time without being occupied with anything illegal,” he said. Luüs said that he wants to renovate the courts so that there is room for many people who are interested in extreme sports. “I want to set up a place for people who enjoy sports like skateboarding, cycling and wakeboarding. There are many young people in Bela-Bela who like these kinds of
sports but there is no place for them to practice it other than their homes, “he said. Luüs explained that such a sports complex could boost the town’s economy. According to him, the rink can attract tourists, especially if competitions are held. “There may even be opportunities where skating competitions can be held as a fundraising event for local charities.” Esrom Nkwinikwa from Youth against Crime said that he welcomes the initiative as he believes that it will help reduce the incidents of drug and alcohol abuse. “A facility like this can help with reducing crime among young people in Bela-Bela. I believe that these facilities can involve the youth in uplifting sporting activities,” he said. Luüs also recently announced that he received interest in his project by a local entrepreneur but said he could only divulge more information after everything has been finalized.
Mookgophong gospel artist Tau Dia Rora , whose real name is Caiphus Khosa, and concerned residents’ representative Wally Van Tonder have smoked a peace pipe after the court intervened in their dispute last Thursday 8 October. Tau dia Rora was hauled to court by Van Tonder, after Van Tonder complained about the artist’s performances in the local CBD (Central Business District). The two parties attended a hearing behind closed doors at the Mookgophong Magistrate Court. Tau Di a Rora and Van Tonder agreed that the artist can continue performing in town, but then the sound must be adjusted so that it does not torment residents. Tau Di a Rora told The Beat that earlier this year a mob of police officers confronted him

while he was performing for his audience in the CBD and switched off his music. He said he was accused of making noise and also performing in town without a permit. “At the time the police arrived while I was performing and switched off my sound. I was advised to obtain a permit from the local municipality. I went through the relevant procedures and was granted permission to perform in the CBD during the weekends. I was shocked when I received a call from the local police station. I was then served with documents that instructed me to come to court,” he said. He said he is relieved following an agreement between himself and the complainant. This artist said performances are his only way of putting bread on his table and enables him to pay the people he works with. The Beat is in possession of a video where the artist was being confronted by the police. Van Tonder said he never intended to stop the artist from performing in town, but only wanted him to reduce the volume. “I was complaining about excessive noise. For the past six years I have been staying in town, and then my friend (Khosa) started with his music and I went to him twice. I went to the police twice and no one wanted to help. I never said he must not play, the only thing I ask is that he must turn his music a little bit down,” he said. Another resident Jan Van Rensburg said this kind of agreement is all they needed, and said he hopes they would now have a peaceful sleep after the artist agreed to turn the music down during his performances. Tau Di a Rora has five albums behind his name, including the recent Shona titled album Mwari Komberera Africa (God Bless Africa).

Poor maintenance result in water cut-offs Bela-Bela has faced another series of water cut-offs as a result of poor maintenance on one of the town’s reservoir pumps. Photo as illustration
Justin Steyn Residents of Bela-Bela have been faced with yet another series of water cut-offs this past week. Water cut-offs have been reported by several residents since Friday 9 October. This has been the second cut-off in less than a month where residents had been left with no water running from their taps. The first cut offs, which occurred on Friday 25 September, is said to have been due to maintenance problems on one of the reservoirs’ water pumps. The most recent cut-offs have been said to be the result of a faulty pump at one of the reservoirs in Renaissance. This was announced by the municipality and relevant stakeholders during a meeting on Monday 12 October. It was announced that a contractor has been assigned to repair the damaged motor during the course of the week. Meanwhile the Bela-Bela Concerned residents group Change took to social media shortly thereafter detailing the nature of the cutoffs and the town’s water status. “The pumps from Magalies Water have been giving problems lately such as overheating. This has caused some interruptions in regards to the water which is pumped into our water reticulation system, but they are attending to it, or have already. The Municipality will be
meeting with them in this week to get an update in regards to this,” the group posted on their Facebook page. It was further stated that some of the borehole pumps, which also pumps water into the water reticulation system, are not functioning. It was said the Municipality is investigating this and will be fixing or replacing the pumps which are not working and installing pumps to those boreholes which do not have pumps at this stage. “Once this has been sorted it will assist to increase our town’s water supply for the future, but the real cause of our latest water problems occurred about two weeks ago was when the pump at the water purification plant stopped functioning properly, the said pump no longer pumped sufficient water to the reservoir situated next to Renaissance, which is one of the causes why this reservoir went empty.” Change further said that another problem arose when a pump located at the reservoir next to Renaissance, which pumps water from there to the bigger reservoir located above it, broke down. “This pump only starts pumping to the bigger reservoir once the reservoir it is pumping from is 90% full and switches on and of off automatically. This pump broke down due to old age, it is said to be older than 20 years,” This pump was reportedly replaced about a week ago which caused the bigger reservoir to go empty and why certain areas have struggled with sufficient water as the Municipality is still struggling to fill this bigger reservoir with water. When asked about why household water is sometimes brown, the municipality explained that this is often the result when the reservoirs are being cleaned.

Speaking to The BEAT, Andries Seputla said that he is fed up with what he calls maladministration in the SAB league. “I will not be registering this season, or in future, under such leadership,” he said. Seputla’s team was allowed to play in the promotional play-offs against Yster United in the SAB League earlier this year, only to be told later that Qualitho was supposed to have been playing that match. The Nedbank Cup has been running for several years, giving SAB teams the opportunity to hone their skills and obtain some prize money in the bargain.
TK Mashaba Young soccer players will be welcomed to Bela-Bela’s Sunfa Stadium on Sunday, 18 October, when SAFA and Transnet will be hosting trials for the School of Excellence. Children under the age of 14 will be able to take part in the trials, according to SAFA Waterberg’s Executive Officer Refiloe Khoza. Any soccer player in the Waterberg can take part, even those who are not registered with the LFA. their academic, psychological, physical and football skills will be put to the test. The selected high school students will receive formal education, life skills training and most importantly, football development. Qualified educators and accredited coaches will ensure that the young boys’ talents will be nurtured and developed as preparation for what can only be soon-to be flourishing football careers. Since the academy’s inception in 1994, 2000 players have been admitted into the school.
