Bail application for Peterson murder suspects Justin Steyn Three suspects arrested for the muchpublicised farm murder outside Bela-Bela were scheduled to make a bid for bail this week. The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court had set aside Thursday, 19 October, for a formal bail application by the threesome. Piet Mathebula, Nico Nkanuyana and Tshepo Thebula were rounded up by detectives in a pre-dawn raid at a hideout at the Kanana section of Hammanskraal early this month. The three men appeared before the BelaBela Magistrate’s Court for the second time on Friday, 13 October. The court appearance was a sequel to the

Officialdom mix-up sets fraud suspect free Justin Steyn Fraud suspect Jaco Opperman (33) is a free man – at least for the time being – after slipping through the fingers of the law due to a documentation mix-up. Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, on Monday, 16 October, said the police in Modimolle have launched a manhunt for Opperman. He said it was reported Opperman had been taken into custody by detectives from Modimolle, after being tracked down to Witbank in Mpumalanga, in connection with fraud. At the time of his arrest Opperman was alleged to have defrauded several people by advertising the sale of buffalos. When the unsuspecting victims deposited money into his account, Opperman allegedly disappeared. “A search ensued since May 2016 until he was arrested in August 2017,” Ngoepe said. Opperman appeared briefly before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 20 September, but reportedly managed to sneak out. According to Ngoepe, Opperman had paid bail of R500, but it was later established the presiding magistrate did not in fact grant bail. A police officer was being probed for allegedly defeating the ends of justice. Opperman would be further charged with allegedly escaping from lawful custody. Police are urging members of the community to assist with information for the re-arrest of Opperman by calling Sergeant Amanda Rossouw on 071 133 8524, or contact the nearest police station, or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.

murder of the elderly Pattie Peterson (73), who was shot in the stomach. Her husband, Cecil, was at the time of going to press still undergoing treatment at the Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, 13 September. Round-the-clock detective work by members of the Bela-Bela police led to the dramatic arrest of three of the four suspects. Police searched the hideout at Kanana and recovered at least three firearms, ammunition and an allegedly stolen Volkswagen Polo and cellphone. Bela-Bela SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Hester Van Zyl on Monday, 16 October, said detectives were still on a manhunt for the fourth suspect.

Police on alert for residential disturbances Andries van der Heyde Bela-Bela residents have been complaining with regards to noise disturbances during various hours of the day and night. During the recent rural safety meeting held at the Bela-Bela police station, Col. Lindie Marx, station commander, said: “Enough is enough and the law will now apply.” A public nuisance is classified as any act as a result of omission or condition which is offensive, which can cause injury, is a danger to health, which materially interferes with the ordinary comfort, convenience, peace or quiet of the public or adversely affects the safety of the public, is also a disturbance. Examples of such would be properties which are not maintained, were shelter for vagrants, wild animals or vermin. This also includes domestic animals which create a disturbance by making frequent and excessive noise. Also of concern was hooting, wrangling or quarrelling, the gathering of a crowd, a demonstration, fighting or challenging others to a fight and loud music. Failing to refrain from doing the abovementioned, the council may at any time enter the premises or meet with the offender to ensure compliance with the bylaw and give notice for the responsible party to remove the disturbance. If not, the council may itself remove the problem. The police and the traffic department are considered the enforcers of this bylaw and offenders can be liable to a fine or imprisonment.

Tensions at breaking point over land near Koppewaai Justin Steyn

EFF local leader Sello Moswoeu has stood his ground to saying land invasions continue. Photo: Justin Steyn

Man flung from rolling vehicle

Koppewaai and the broader Spa Park were on a knife edge against the backdrop of a volatile standoff between various interest groups on Tuesday, 17 October. Central to the crisis was the late night illegal occupation of a piece of land by the homeless, led by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The impasse occurred after the EFF spearheaded a late evening occupation of the land on Monday, 16 October. The Bela-Bela SAPS moved swiftly, convening an extraordinary meeting of affected parties on Tuesady, 17 October. At the tense summit Bela-Bela police station commander, Colonel Lindie Marx, warned the authorities would not allow anyone to act outside of the law. She made it loud and clear the police did not necessarily convene the meeting to address the land dispute, but rather to avoid open conflict and lawlessness. “We went out to the land and found people were drinking (publicly), and this will not be tolerated. Our stance on the matter is that there is friction between the land occupants and the surrounding communities. We therefore require full cooperation from those involved,” she

The mangled vehicle. Photo supplied Justin Steyn A man suffered serious injuries after being flung from a rolling vehicle, following an accident on the N1 north just past BelaBela. Advanced Paramedics Assistance (APA) spokesperson, Andy Gill, said the accident took place on Saturday, 14 October. “We were dispatched to the N1 North just past the Bela-Bela turnoff for a motor vehicle accident. On arrival we found that a single vehicle had lost control and rolled. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was lying in the middle of the road. No

other people were in the vehicle,” Gill said. He said the driver sustained serious injuries but was stabilized on the scene and transported to the Bela-Bela hospital. Earlier on the same day, Gill said the paramedics rushed to another accident, where a bakkie had rolled over. “One of our ambulances was dispatched to the R101 about 4km outside of Modimolle for a single vehicle accident. The driver allegedly lost control after a tyre burst, causing the vehicle to roll,” Gill explained He reported that three people were inside the vehicle. “They were transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries,” he said.

said. During the meeting, Marx also said that a case of trespassing had been opened and was under investigation. Keenan Alberts, a community leader from Spa Park, was of the view it was in the interest of locals to attend. He said another piece of land was demarcated by the provincial authorities on the fringes of Koppewaai, with the view to relocate the homeless settling there. “That land has been earmarked for the local community and we are still awaiting the process to be finalized,” he said. The stand-off was a sequel to the invasion of private-owned land on Monday evening, by the homeless, some wearing EFF Tshirts. EFF branch coordinator, Sello Moswoeu, had disclosed to The BEAT on Monday that the homeless would occupy the privateowned land, along Alma Road just before Koppewaai. “We had no choice but to take matters into our own hands since the ANC and DA have failed to provide land, basic services, housing and jobs for our people,” Moswoeu said. Other parties at the meeting were in agreement that officialdom had indeed, as Alberts obseeved, earmarked and demarcated a piece of land on the fringes of Koppewaai for residential purposes.

There still remained a glimmer of hope as Eskom held a threatening thumb over the on-off power switch to the embattled ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality. The city fathers moved swiftly, disclosing officialdom had paid Eskom an amount of R2,5 m by end of business on Monday, 16 October. The latter payment, the authorities have indicated, would go a long way as part of the broader efforts to ward off power supply disruptions in December. Eskom has threatened to unleash power supply disruptions from 6 December. The political leadership on the other hand, also reassured residents it would do everything in its power to ensure electricity supplies were not disrupted by 6 December, as threatened by Eskom. The national bulk power supplier placed a prominent advertisement in sister publication, Die Pos/The Post, with the headline “Interruptions of bulk electricity supply to LIM368 (sic),” with the potential to press panic buttons. According to the power utility, the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality had an outstanding electricity debt of R213 m dating back to September 2015. In the advertisement Eskom charged that the municipality’s “breach of its payment obligation to Eskom” undermined and placed in jeopardy the power utility’s ability to continue

with the supply of electricity on a financially-sustainable basis, to the broader South African nation. “In order to protect the national interest in the sustainability of electricity supply, it has become necessary for Eskom to exercise its right to disconnect the supply of electricity to LIM 368 Municipality (now known as ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality),” the advertisement explained. The planned power interruptions were scheduled to take place from 6am to 8am, and also between 5pm and 7.30pm during weekdays. During weekends, the power interruptions were anticipated to take place from 8.30am to 11am, and also from 3pm to 5.30pm. Should the municipality fail to remedy the electricity crisis, Eskom threatened to disconnect electricity “entirely and indefinitely.” There was, however, some light at the end of the tunnel, with the Modimolle-Mookgophong Political Management Team (PMT) promising to try everything in their power to prevent the planned power interruptions. The PMT has promised to issue a more detailed statement in due course. Last month Eskom continued to tighten the screws on the municipality, giving the authorities an ultimatum to settle for an amount of R20.7 m by 22 September, failing which Eskom threatened to disrupt power supplies.

Pre-exam prayers for learners

Members of the various denominations go through their paces. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Youth leaders from various denominations at Bela-Bela have rallied one another to speak with one voice. Ancient Apostles and Brethren Church of God leader, Archbishop Isaac Mahasha, unveiled the churches were planning a youth conference on Saturday, 16 December. Mahasha said in the past there was tension between the denominations. He said Christian brotherhood should be about different churches working together for the good of all.

Churches taking part in plans ahead of the December conference include, among others, The Ancient Apostles and Brethren Church of God, The New General Apostolic Church, Roman Apostolic Church of Christ and the Apostolic Christian Brothers. The denominations recently held a plenary youth summit ahead of the big day in December. At the summit the youth representatives constituted themselves into Baswa Ba Bapostola, which when loosely translated means “apostolic youths collective”. Archbishops Hendrick Mothokoa, David Khoza and Isaac Mahasha were among the speakers at the event.

The prayer service was held at the Uniting Reformed Church. The prayer event was an initiative by the church, in partnership with pastors from other denominations. Targeted for the session were learners

from primary and high schools, as well as the undergraduate and postgraduate students. An educator from Modimolle’s Phagameng High School, Mrs ME Molaphela delivered a motivational talk to learners ahead of the year-end final examinations. Meanwhile, Uniting Reformed Church clergyman, the Reverend Mosima, delivered the main sermon. The pre-exams theme was “Come with us”.

The contest focused on learners at the primary schools’ foundation phase. All the seven primary schools at Bela-Bela took part in the competition, in the categories of reading aloud, creative writing and mathematics. The preliminary stages of the contest started last month at local level, through the cluster, circuit followed by the district level. Mmamakwa Full-Service School Grade 2 leaner, Reshoketswe Masemene, scooped the main overall prize, winning a smartphone, among other goodies.

Masemene, she of the rather small body structure, was the crowd favourite as she stumbled her way to the podium to receive the coveted first prize. The little one – an orphan, for that matter mesmerised all and sundry when she emerged the overall winner. Another of the Bela-Bela school’s orphaned learner, Oboikanyo Molobi, was awarded a certificate of recognition after coming out third overall. Both kids were under the care of their grandmothers. Molobi is a Grade 1 learner, who excelled in the reading aloud category. She had emerged the overall winner from local to district level, before reaching the provincial finals. In the provincial Grade 1 creative writing category, Mmamakwa Full-Service School’s Keorapetse Makgatho scooped second position.

October. A bevy of models, among them BelaBela’s Kativa, took to the ramp to showcase designs by fashionistas arriving from as far afield as Pretoria. Fashion designer Tholwana’s Afro Luhuru Collexion creations had the massive audience crying out for more,

with potential customers snapping up her business cards like they were getting out of vogue (no pun intended!). Tholwana was given the platform to address the fashion lovers converging at the hotel, whereby she traced back her journey as a wannabe fashionista since September 2016.

She urged socialites in attendance – many from the business community – to support emergent fashion designers. The 24-year-old Kativa hails from BelaBela, and works full-time as a waitress. She expressed her desire to become a full-time model in the not so distant future.

Dispute over Bela-Bela Stadium

Troublemakers FC’s Sello Baloyi cult hero Mzamane Ringane Modimolle Troublemakers FC goalkeeper Sello Modopi Baloyi emerged the man of the moment after his team advanced to the next stages of the Nedbank Cup. The Modimolle lads were trailing their Vaalwater counterparts, Boys 2 Men FC, at a scoreline of 2-1, when Kamogelo Baloyi scored an all-important goal just before the blow of the final whistle to make it. Knowing the importance of that last minute goal, supporters of the home team celebrated as if they had just won a cup final. When the two teams had proceeded to the much dreaded penalty shootout, the Modimolle Troublemakers FC shot-stopper took the biggest responsibility of taking the first shot, and converted it beautifully. Football pundits generally agree the first penalty was normally granted to a trusted goal-scorer to settle nerves. At last weekend’s Nedbank Cup fixure Sello Baloyi was that trusted goal-scorer, converting with ease against the backdrop of sky-high tensions. The moment that defined the whole game was when the goalkeeper consecutively saved two penalty kicks from the Vaalwater Boys 2 Men FC opponents. At the end of the day Modimolle Troublemakers FC eliminated Vaalwater Boys 2 Men FC 4-2, from the coveted Nedbank Cup on penalties, after playing to a 2-all draw at the end of regulation time. Sello Baloyi told The BEAT Sport that as the team skipper, he felt it was important to lead from the front and steer his team to victory. “I had to do it for the team. After scoring the first penalty, I felt that I had to give our team the advantage by denying the opponents a chance to score their first penalty kick,” he said. Modimolle Troublemakers FC head coach, Njobo Mphasha, said the introduction of three fresh legs in the game helped his team to overcome their opponents. “We are now preparing for our next match against Rapotokwane Qualitho FC. The Rapotokwane team is always difficult to play against, but we are going for a win,” he said. Boys 2 Men FC coach Solly Molekoa said

his players suffered from fatigue as they had to play two matches in a single day. He however admitted that defeat was part of the game of football, and the team was now shifting their full focus to the Waterberg SAB Regional League fixtures. “It is now back to the drawing boards and we will then take it one game at a time,” Molekoa said.

The disputed Bela-Bela Stadium. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba The behind-the-scenes plot around the newly-built Bela-Bela Stadium took a nasty turn when the nation’s soccer controlling body declared it unsafe. South African Football Associastion (SAFA) regional vice-president, Jack Maluleke, said the venue’s internal barriers were too close to the touchline, with the potential to cause injury to soccer players. “The barrier inside the stadium is too close to the touchline and (thus) dangerous,” he said.

In recent weeks Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni told The BEAT the local municipality was exploring ways to have the stadium opened officially. The Bela-Bela Stadium conundrum was brought back into sharp focus when two weekends ago Nedbank Cup fixtures were abandoned due to a waterlogged playing surface. Officals had ruled for the postponement of matches because underfoot conditions were unsafe. It was believed that due to the more sophisticated drainage system at the new stadium, the matches would not have been abandoned.
