Students discover unmarked exam papers

Photo: TK Mashaba Lizzy Bapela and TK Mashaba Students from Solomon Mahlangu Secondary School in Modimolle have discovered a pile of old unmarked exam papers. This shocking discovery was encountered at the school’s rubbish bins on Monday, 10 February, when the students were busy cleaning. The exam papers were dated June and November 2013.

The students told The BEAT that they engaged the School Management Team (SMT) immediately after the discovery and were allegedly given a run-around. “We wanted to show them that we’re serious about our education we’re really concerned about what had happened. Some students’ results were not satisfying and some did not even make it to the next grade. We

ask ourselves what really happened that had led to the papers ending up in rubbish bins. Our attempts to meet with the circuit manager failed, so we thought of taking the news to the media,” said one of the students who wanted to remain anonymous. “If those papers had not been lost we would have passed, but they did not mark our papers,” said another angry student. Photo supplied Monday this week, and the school principal Steven Majapholo said that he had been shocked to hear of the drama at his school. He said that the toilets were being used as a storeroom for papers and that he had been unaware that any papers remained unmarked. Some of the students were so upset that they bunked school to join a local protest march on Tuesday, 18 February.
