Lizzy Bapela Three men were taken to the Bela-Bela police station on Saturday, 16 July in connection with an incident where fleet tires were allegedly stolen from the Traffic Department. A municipal worker and two car mechanics — a tire fitment businessman and his employee — were nabbed on Saturday, 16 July.

According to the information received, the municipal worker called and asked the mechanics to fetch some tires at the Traffic Department to pump them air and bring them back afterwards and they did as they were asked. To their surprise, the car mechanics were suddenly approached by a police detective while leaving the Traffic station, who told them that they were under

arrest for stealing tires.

The detective’s statement apparently shocked the mechanics as they said that they were doing nothing wrong as far as they knew. The mechanics added that the municipal worker was then detained while they were released. They said that they were confused, as they did not understand what exactly was going on.

When questioned by The BEAT, the municipal worker said that he was also surprised to be arrested, but nevertheless arrived at court on Monday, 18 July like he was scheduled to. He said that he was told to leave. Apparently he would be asked to appear in court at a later stage if needed, as there is no case against him at the time.

Bela-Bela police detectives’ commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said that the information the police received is that two security officers stationed at the Traffic centre called a traffic officer who also cannot be named and the officer alerted the police of the matter. He also confirmed that the municipal worker was arrested on Saturday, 16 July, and charged with theft from motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property.

Lieutenant-Colonel Phetla added that the suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Monday, 18 July, while the other two were released and turned state witnesses. He also said that the police have a case against the municipal worker, who did not appear in court as scheduled because the court’s director of public prosecution ordered certain statements be obtained from all parties before the case could be placed in their roll.

The colonel further said that the municipal worker was then released on R500 bail and will appear in court once investigations produce what the courts need to proceed with the case.

The businessman fetched his bakkie from the police station on Tuesday, 19 July as it was confiscated during their alleged arrest.

Residents of Phagameng in Modimolle expressed their frustrations with the current state of affairs when EFF president Julius Malema visited the area on Tuesday, 19 July.

Malema listened to the local residents at the Phagameng Taxi Rank, when he visited Modimolle as part of his whistlestop tour around the Waterberg.

Locals came in large numbers to attend this event.

Phagameng resident Christinah Mabunda indicated to Malema that her rights were violated by municipal officials who sold her a RDP house.

In what seemed to be the most emotional experience, Vaalwater pensioner Mary Nana Nku, who lives with her family in a community hall, also shared her real life drama with the EFF President.

Nku said the municipality made an arrangement for her family to temporarily occupy the community hall, after they were banished from a farm.

She said they have been promised that they will receive a decent home to live in, but to date they are still living

inconveniently in a community hall.

After listening to the grievances of the locals, Malema told the audience that his party was aware that there were many challenges in this area.

“We are here today to remind you that on August 3 we have an appointment with our future. I am saying this because the future of our children is in our hands,” he said.

Malema said the issue of unemployment in the area is one of the issues that need to be addressed.

He said that jobs are limited to those who are politically connected, and warned that this tendency must come to an end. Malema said from since 1994 people have been voting for “T-shirts”, but still do not have jobs.

He also lashed out at the municipality for failing to provide the poor people with basic services like water and electricity.

The EFF leader also took some time to have a meet and greet session with the senior citizens of Modimolle.

Malema has also visited Thabazimbi, Lephalale, Bela-Bela and Mogalakwena as part of his tour in the Waterberg region.

Ndlovu trial may take place after new magistrate is appointed Justin Steyn

The trial for murder accused Solly Ndlovu might only start after a new magistrate has been appointed at the Bela-Bela Regional Court.

Murder accused Solly Ndlovu (37) will stand trial at the Bela-Bela Regional court. The decision was made by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Friday, 29

April after extensive investigations.

Ndlovu stands accused of murdering a 28-year-old woman, who was believed to be his girlfriend, in December last year.

According to Bela-Bela police spokesperson, Maria Maswanganye, Ndlovu was involved in a scuffle with Nathalia Maphanga at their Extension 5 home on Sunday, 20 December.

Maswanganye said that the two became involved in what appeared to be a brawl where both used knives to attack each

another. Maphanga was fatally wounded and died on the scene.

Ndlovu recovered at the Bela-Bela hospital for over a week, suffering from stab wounds to the neck arm and chest.

Ndlovu made his first court appearance in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, 5 January and has been denied bail since police investigations have taken place.

Ndlovu’s case has been postponed ever since. His last court appearance

was on Tuesday, 5 July where the case was postponed to Friday 5 August A source at the court told The BEAT that a new regional court magistrate is expected to be appointed in September this year.

The source said that the current magistrate, George Mogotlane, has only been appointed on a contractual basis which is allegedly valid until the end of August.

Front page story: A handful of community members and residents gathered in front of the Bela-Bela municipality on Monday 18 July to raise important issues with the town’s mayor, Lucas Nhlapo.

The meeting was arranged by residents after two separate community meetings took place in the township the previous week.

In the mid-morning hours of the day, resident Danny Sedibana was seen speaking through a loud speaker in front of the municipality’s entrance encouraging passers-by to assemble and take action against alleged corruption in the municipality.

The municipality’s security personnel stood sternly at the building’s locked entrance not allowing anyone to enter the premises. Local police arrived shortly thereafter, declared the gathering illegal, and even threatened to arrest residents who did not want to leave.

Despite this, residents stood their ground.

The chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters at Bela-Bela, Sello Mosweu, scolded security for not allowing residents to enter the premises, as some of those who were turned away wanted to pay their bills.

want to pay their bills, so open the gates,” he demanded.

Those who assembled were told that Nhlapo will be meeting with them by the afternoon.

The chairperson of Change for Bela-Bela, NJ van Heerden, awaited

Nhlapo’s arrival in order to hand over the memorandum with the community’s demands.

The BEAT reviewed the memorandum which demanded the immediate release of the findings of the KPMG Forensic Investigation

into alleged corruption and maladministration by the municipality as well as action against those implicated.

The memorandum further demanded the immediate suspension of the new basic charges introduced on electricity, water and sewage. Residents are up in arms about the new basic charges, which will cost residents using prepaid electricity R500 a month, and residents using conventional electricity R1 000 a month, before any electricity is used.

The water and sewage fees are also considered excessive.

The memorandum further stated that Nhlapo will have 24 hours to respond to the demands.

“If the municipality fails to respond, we will disrupt all forthcoming municipal events and council meetings until it has been dealt with, starting with the visit by the Premier and MEC’s to Bela-Bela on Wednesday 20 July,” the memorandum read.

Upon his arrival, Nhlapo was greeted by a heavy police presence and residents who were pleased that he has attended to the gathering.

He addressed the residents after signing the memorandum and said that a council meeting will take place to address the issues at hand and feedback will be provided shortly thereafter.

“There are many factors to be taken into account about the demands but a meeting will be held and we will respond shortly thereafter,” he said.

By press time, the municipality had not yet responded.

On Sunday 17 July, local resident Catherine Maswanganye said she was happy that the Modimolle Local Municipality has finally managed to fix the problem.

The situation was, according to Maswanganye fixed last weekend after a sewer cleaning truck arrived to work on the situation.

During the interview with The BEAT, Maswanganye was visibly happy and indicated that she lacked enough words to express her happiness.

“We are happy that the municipality listened to us when we reported our grievances. We hope that they will keep maintaining the infrastructure,” she said.

Traditional healers urged to register with authorities

The DA’s national spokespeople Refiloe Nt’sekhe and Phumzile Van Damme were on a tour last week, conducting oversight and interact with community members in areas within some of the communities around the province. The party members explained their view that these are the areas that are worst affected by the ANC’s sharp decline in service delivery.

In the Waterberg District, members of the party from all local municipalities across the district flocked to the Mogalakwena area to meet the dignitaries on Thursday, 14 July. The two listened to the grievances of some of the people affected by poor service delivery.

Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane The Waterberg Traditional Health Practitioners Forum has warned all traditional practitioners who are not registered to do so before 9 August or face the wrath of the law.

The forum’s public officer Lesiba Alfred Mashabela said that the Traditional Health Practitioners Act no. 22 of 2007 clearly states that, no person may practice as a traditional health practitioner within the Republic of South Africa, unless he or she is registered in terms of this act.

Mashabela said that no one was allowed to perform any form of traditional practices if they are not properly registered.

He indicated that the notice has been issued with effect from 9 July, and traditional practitioners were given a month to register.

“If a traditional health practitioner has already registered but their registration documents are expired, we advise them to

renew them. After the closing date, which is 9 August, we will be working with the authorities to ensure that all non-registered practitioners are brought to book,” he said.

Mashabela said that traditional practitioners who practise without proper registration documents are putting the lives of their patients at risk.

He indicated that all traditional practitioners must be recognized, to ensure that everyone follows the regulations.

Last year in November the Waterberg Traditional Health Practitioners Forum held a conference in Modimolle, with practitioners from various parts of the Waterberg taking part in this event.

The purpose of the event at the time was to emphasize on the importance of member registration and preserving this cultural practice.

The dignitaries engaged residents affected by poor service delivery, conducted doorto-door campaigns, attended community meetings and did walkabouts at various taxi ranks, where they got an opportunity to unpack the DA’s manifesto for change.

At these engagements, Van Damme and Nt’sekhe unpacked the DA’s vision for better services. They were joined by the DA Provincial Leader Jacques Smalle, Provincial Chairperson Langa Bodlani, Provincial Spokesperson Solly Malatsi, Member of Parliament Beyer Smit, councillors and activists.

After responding to shack fires near their base, the Modimolle Working on Fire (WoF) participants took it upon themselves to bring change in the community that they operate within. The programme has partnered with Modimolle Municipality to embark on a doorto-door campaign at the informal settlement in Phagameng, Modimolle on Friday, 8 July.

WoF spokesperson Matema Gwangwa said that the objective of the campaign is to educate the community about the impacts of fires and to equip them with information that they could use in their homes to prevent more shack fires from taking place. She added that since the start of the fire season, the Modimolle WoF Team has responded to two shack fires that occurred in the informal settlement.

The first fire occurred in the beginning of June, where the fire fighters and a community member rescued two children between the ages of 4 and 6. The second fire was reported just a week after responding to the first fire. In both fires the WoF participants were alerted by the unusual smoke that they saw coming from the informal settlement.

Letters Lehutso, a Type 1 Crew leader at Modimolle Base said that their key objective as Working on Fire is to save lives and to protect the environment.

“We might be the veld and forest fire fighters but if there is a fire taking place near our operational area or jurisdiction, we will always respond and assist where we can,

irrespective of the type of fire that will be burning,” he added.

Gwangwa continued to highlight that more than 13 shack fires were reported to the municipality since the start of the fire season, and it was discovered upon investigation that almost all of them were caused by negligence.

She added that this has prompt WoF to join hands with the Municipality to try and fight these unwanted fires as well as prevent them from happening.

Disaster Management Officer at the Waterberg District Municipality Sarah Skosana said that they have been so fortunate so far, because to date, there is no life lost in all the shack fires that has been reported.

“Today we managed to visit about 55 households to distribute the message of fire awareness to the communities of Phagameng.

We will continue to educate them about the fires until we get to the zero percent of fires in this community,” she said.

During the door to door campaign the community members were also given the emergency numbers that they should call to report these shack fires to ensure that they get assistance urgently. People should call Waterberg Disaster Management Control Room on 0800 111 660 or Modimolle Fire Department on 082 807 8152, both numbers are available 24hours.

“I am grateful for the assistance that the WoF fire fighters gave me when they rescued my shack which was burning. May they keep up the good work that they are doing,” said Cecilia Ngoepe, a community member whose shack was saved from fire.

Mikosi has been with Marakele National Park since 2009 and boasts several accolades to his name including the 2009/2010 Best Guide of Limpopo Welcome Awards. According to him, to be nominated for such an award says a lot because it means people who come to the park acknowledge his work and always walk away with a sense of satisfaction when he has taken them on a game drive.

The Limpopo MEC for Social Development Joyce Mashamba handed over blankets, toiletries and food parcels to about 400 beneficiaries in Bela-Bela.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the Red Cross helped the MEC in her department’s Winter Warmer initiative which was officially launched at the Bela-Bela Community Hall on Tuesday, 12 July. Only ten people from disadvantaged family backgrounds benefited during the official launch and the rest were said to receive their parcels later on that day.

Departmental spokesperson Adele van der Linde said that the Winter Warmer initiative seeks to address the plight of underprivileged and vulnerable people and children living on the streets. She added that the initiative is part of the ministerial Winter Feeding Programme, targeting homeless people around cities and major towns, during the winter season.

Van der Linde further said that the programme is run for three months starting from June to August and aim to provide at least 50 beneficiaries a day, from Monday to Friday with a nutritious cooked meal. In Bela-Bela, beneficiaries, attendees and stakeholders were served with beans soup and brown bread, this to promote healthy living.

Mandela’s love for children emulated Mzamane Ringane The political leadership in Modimolle must have revived Nelson Mandela’s most recognisable passion; generosity of spirit towards children.

Members of the ANC in Ward 8 and other branches from various parts of Modimolle spared some of their time to cheer up children at Modimolle’s Agape Edu Care These leaders visited the crèche on 18 July, to hand over blankets to the institution as part of the Mandela Day activities.

Although there was a formal programme, the children added colour to the event by singing and performing other forms of recitations.

It was not just another day, but a special occasion for Dimakatso Morajane (4), who shares her birthday with the late former President .

On behalf of the crèche, SGB chairperson John Lechelele officially received a donation of blankets from the political leadership.

Speaking at the Mandela Day event, Waterberg ANC REC member Tshwenyane Moagi urged members of the society to build a proper foundation, by nourishing the children with love.

He pleaded with his fellow comrades to start investing in young people, suggesting that they should start collecting school shoes for the young ones.

“The level of poverty is disturbing, and we must contribute positively towards eradicating it,” Moagi said.

He said that they will run programmes to eradicate illiteracy in the society.

SGB chairperson John Lechelele thanked the political leadership for their thoughtfulness, and choosing to keep the children at this institution warm.

Lechelele said this was a special day, especially because it also served to celebrate the birthday of one of their children at the crèche.

Modimolle life coach targets 4 000 young people

Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Twenty-six-year-old Modimolle life coach, Leslie Nkanyane has set a target of reaching about 4 000 young people this year, through his life orientation sessions.

Nkanyane, who currently studies Human Resources Management with the University of South Africa, mentors learners from Solomon Mahlangu High School and his alma mater Phagameng High School.

Apart from school visits, this multi-skilled young life coach also focuses on churches,

crèches and drop-in centres.

He told The BEAT that he has not been able to build offices for his registered organisation named Leslie Life Coaching Centre, due to lack of funds.

Nkanyane said he came up with this idea after realizing that most young people need someone who can guide and encourage them to focus on their studies.

“My long term goal is to reach as many young people as possible, and empower them with life skills. Our topics range from lifestyle, education and HIV/AIDS. We also have a programme where we take young women to various workplaces, so they can explore and decide their career paths thoroughly,” he said.

He said this programme allows young women to make the right career choices while they are still at school, and makes it easier for them to decide when they leave high school.

Nkanyane who has a huge passion for writing, told The BEAT that he has completed his first book named Batho re Bolaišwa ke Megabaru (translated by the author as “people are greedy”).

He said he was now working on his second book named True Champions Never Give Up. Nkanyane urged young people who would like to receive free daily life coaching messages through social media to contact him.

The park was infiltrated by unbearable rubbish and unwanted and unsafe items posing health risks to the nearby residents especially the children.
