Five die in Vaalwater accident Lizzy Bapela Five people died after the driver of a sedan lost control, with the vehicle overturning outside Vaalwater on Saturday 16 June.

Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said the names of the deceased could be released following positive identification by members of their respective families.

The police in Modimolle have launched a manhunt following a local farm attack.

The incident on Friday 15 June, took place hardly a few days after the police had reported they were on the trail of three farm attack suspects in Vaalwater.

During the recent incident on the outskirts of Modimolle, the SAPS said in a statement that a couple in their seventies were sitting inside their vehicle, when four armed suspects emerged from the bushes.

“The intruders allegedly demanded money, and in the process the woman was shot while still sitting in the bakkie.

The suspects fired shots at her husband but (he) was not hit,” the statement explained.

In a separate statement, Limpopo DA leader Jacques Smalle said the attack was on the farm Varkenskraal.

He said Dr Leslie van Niekerk was shot in the stomach, while her husband, Dr Herkie van Niekerk, and a farm worker, Abram Kethisha, were brutally assaulted.

The police said the suspects drove with the victims in their bakkie to the farmhouse, and upon arrival they demanded the keys to the safe.

“The perpetrators then fled the scene with (an) undisclosed amount of cash and firearms, using the victim’s bakkie,” the police said.

The police further said the injured victim was air-lifted to an unnamed hospital.

The police made an appeal to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Warrant Officer Gawie Greew, on 083 661 7239 or the station at 014 718 7512, the police emergency number 0860010111 or use the sms crime line 32211or contact the nearest police station.

Smalle said he would write to the MEC for Community Safety, Makoma Makhurupetje, to request a meeting to discuss the safety of rural communities.

“Limpopo rural communities — farmers as well as farmworkers — are increasingly at risk as the SAPS have limited personnel and resources, to prevent violent crime in secluded and vast rural areas,” Smalle added.

Ngoepe said the accident happened along the R33 road outside Vaalwater.

The occupants were on their way from Lephalale town to Vaalwater, travelling in a white Ford Figo sedan. “When they were about 30 km Vaalwater, the driver lost control of the vehicle until it overturned, instantly killing all the occupants including a three-year-old girl,” he explained.

The police have since opened a case of culpable homicide, and further investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.

An alleged house robber took on more than he bargained for after he was cornered and arrested, duirng a Bela-Bela housebreaking attempt in the early hours of Wednesday 20 June.

The suspect was caught during a joint operation between the Bela-Bela Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Galvin Security, with police reinforcements arriving in time to arrest the man.

Bela-Bela SAPS Detectives Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, said the suspect was expected to appear before the

Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday 22 June, on charges of housebreaking and attempted theft.

He said the suspect was a fugitive from the law, who failed to appear in court for a previous charge of theft of a gass cylinder at the downtown Build-It store.

His co-accused has since been convicted.

Other information suggest the suspect tried to break into an old lady’s house, who alerted the CPF and security company.

It was alleged the suspect was spotted scaling the perimeter wall of the said house, where he then broke a window and hid in the house.

The suspect was found hiding under a couch.

Housewives concern over prime time TV soccer Lizzy Bapela and Kego Matjiu The TV remote control has become the nerve centre of power in homesteads across the Waterberg, due to massive coverage of the Soccer World Cup in Russia.

Husbands and wives have to find the middle ground in terms of watching prime time soap operas on the one hand, and huge supplies of soccer matches on the other.

The BEAT has established during a snap survey on Monday 18 June that many housewives — who may not necessarily understand what Russia 2018 was all about — were frustrated at missing out on some of their favourite prime time programmes.

Precious Manaka of Pienaarsriver said she and her husband, Victor, have had differences when it came to the World Cup. “I only watch it sometimes because it bores me, and I do not even understand it,” she said.

Manaka further said she got even more annoyed when a match was fixtured at the same time as her favourite soapies.

Vaalwater’s Lucy Moruwe said she only watched Russia 2018 because her husband did.

She said it was only when he was not around that she was able to tune into her favourite programmes.

“I only give in because he is the head of the family … I do it out of respect.

Personally I am not into soccer,” she said.

Francinah Mogotlane of Mookgophong said she did not understand or like soccer, and therefore did not watch it at all.

She said when her partner was around and tuned into the soccer, she found something else to keep her busy instead of watching the “boring show”.

Katlego Radebe of Modimolle said she was not a soccer fan.

To the contrary, Die Pos/The Post editor, Keina Swart, declared she and her entire

family were great fans of the game of soccer.

Rewind back to South Africa 2010.

At the time shopfloor workers at a retail store watched with disbelief as Keina’s son, Daneel, then six-years-old, kicked up a storm insisting that his parents buy him a vuvuzela.

Daneel’s dad, Niel, was nudged into finding a compromise with Daneel; whether to purchase the very noisy vuvuzela or not.

The solution, accordning to Keina, was that Daneel and other visiting kids would be allowed to blow their eardrum-shattering vuvuzela only when Bafana Bafana scored a goal.

Enter Siphiwe Tshabalala with that sublime opening match goal against Mexico, and Daneel and other kids were running up and down in the house, blowing up a storm on their favourite wind instrument!

As for Russia 2018, Keina has proudly disclosed the family were decorating the house in the colours of their favourite team at the tournament.

Mom and dad were even sipping Vodka, to support Russia as a host.

The family’s longtime friend, Dr Gerhard Grobler, and his family were planning to join in the Swart’s in the soccer fun.

R1 000 bail for arson suspect Andries van der Heyde The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 14 June granted bail of R1 000 to Koppwewaai arson attack suspect, Hans Phale.

Phale appeared in court following the destruction by fire of a shack in Koppewaai on Sunday 3 June.

The court has postponed the case to Thursday 5 July, pending further investigations.

The shack belonged to Koppewaai resident Salome Mahladisha.

At the time officials from the Bela-Bela Local Council visited the scene of the fire, to offer support.

Risk management head, Thipe Dlamini, had at the time promised that the municipality would provide building material for the destitute Mahladisha.

He also promised that the Home Affairs Department was to be engaged to assist in issuing a new ID for the woman, after her original document was destroyed in the fire.

Substance abuse awareness Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni was scheduled to host an alcohol and substance abuse awareness workshop.

The planned event was to be held at the township’s Multipurpose Centre on Saturday 23 June.

The office of the mayor said the workshop would be conducted under the theme: “I decide against underage drinking.”

Mayoral special programmes officer, David Raborolo, said learners and the youth in general would be targeted.

He said the office of the mayor was facilitating the initiative in partnership with the South African Breweries (SAB), the Department of Social Services and the SAPS. The facilitating stakeholders have committed to dispatch relevant experts to workshop and sensitize participants about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

Mzamane Ringane Modimolle athlete Jane Lechelele celebrated her 41st birthday in style during the recent Comrades Matharon, after she earned herself a bronze medal.

Last year Lechelele participated in the marathon, but missed the medals cut-off time, unfortunately with only a few seconds.

“It was so amazing to be taking part in this huge event, while celebrating my birthday at the same time. The bronze medal was the greatest (birthday) gift ever,” she said.

The athlete advised people to start small if they wanted to make it.

She said brisk walking on a daily basis also had the potential to offer a good start for aspirant runners, which could later be enhanced by running for short distances, such as 1km and later longer distances.

Being a mother of three and a granny of four offspring has never been an obstacle for Lechelele, who worked against all odds, to finish her Comrades Marathon and claim bronze. “(The race day) 10 June 2018 was so amazing. Let me also acknowledge God, my coaches, all my supporters, and not forgetting my family for being understanding even when I had less time to spend with them,” she added.

Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s Mafede Adventure Group (MAG) is on a schoolyard roadshow to revive the spirit of mural activity, which they believe helped to sharpen the minds of participants.

The events management company visited Maope High School on Thursday 7 June.

During the activities learners had great fun competing in camping-related activities, such as competing groupings being assigned to build bridges with timber.

MAG founder, Tebogo “Dark Cloud” Maluleka, said learners at local schools and elsewhere, needed to be involved in mural activities such as camping, so as to expose

them to the amazing wonders of animal and plant life beyond the schoolyard.

Participants were broken into groups which competed against each other, in the form of unpacking puzzling questions, be they geographical, historical or otherwise.

There was also a fun run, whereby twosomes of participants had their ankles tied together with string, and then assigned to search for items such as sweets in the school garden.

Maluleke said the MAG initiative planned to take the camping activities to other schools in Bela-Bela.

He added that potential sponsors would be sought to help sustain what they believed was a good initiative.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga urged people of Bela-Bela, young and old, to go back to school and get a matric certificate.

The minister said this during an event aimed at informing people, especially the youth, about the second chance for matriculants.

The event was held at the Bela-Bela Community Hall on Sunday 17 June.

During her address, the minister spoke about the importance of having a matric certificate, adding it opened doors in life.

“We all come from disadvantaged families and community backgrounds …we all make mistakes during our schooling years, but no situation must be allowed to prevent any citizen from completing their qualifications,” she said.

Spa Park clinic for rights commission Lizzy Bapela

The furore around the closure of the health clinic in Spa Park was on Monday 18 June, headed for the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (Dawn) unveiled this early in the week.

DA Member of Parliament and Dawn provincial chair, Desiree Van Der Walt, said in a statement the SAHRC was being engaged with regards to the failure of the provincial health department to provide Spa Park

residents with a mobile clinic, as an alternative.

The local health clinic was closed in the year 2015, with Spa Park residents having to seek health care at the downtown clinic.

Van Der Walt has pointed out that the closure of the health facility had affected especially the elderly.

The provincial leadership of the DA learnt about the closure of the health clinic during a visit to Spa Park in May of this year.

Departmental spokesperson Derick Kganyago had not responded at the time of going to print.

Lizzy Bapela The Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters Club joined hands with Bela-Bela’s Men’s Prayer Group to spread goodwill in the local township.

The visitors from Gauteng, in their signature yellow attire, got their hands dirty, digging and shovelling the foundation for a house for local resident Jerminah Mashaba and her family, on Saturday 16 June.

Mashaba said her extended family consisted of 13 members, in the form of six adults and seven children, who all survived on the government’s child support grant.

Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters Club national coordinator, Cedric Moela, said the Mashaba’s plight was identified during the distribution of food parcels on a previous visit.

The digging of the foundation was completed, and preparations for the construction of the house were to start shortly.

Bela-Bela Men’s Prayer Group leader, Joseph Makhubela, said the ecumenical movement would facilitate the processes going forward.

Food parcels were also donated during the latest visit.

It was also a special day for Stephina Mashaba, who was pleasantly surprised with a cake and soft drinks on the occasion of her turning 14.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Bela-Bela has unveiled Namibian national Andreas Mwambo as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming by-elections.

Bela-Bela EFF co-ordinator, Sello Moswoeu, said the EFF’s democratic processes made it possible for Mwambo, a resident of Vingerkraal, to be elevated to the face of the party ahead of the byelections on Tuesday 17 July.

He said Mwambo qualified to stand for the EFF as he met requirements such as South African citizenship.

Both the ANC and Bela-Bela Residents Association (BRA) were still to identify their respective candidates.

Moswoeu said Mwambo was the first choice for potential voters during a party meeting held recently at Spa Park, against a couple of other candidates.

The countdown ahead of the all-important by-elections in Bela-Bela’s Ward 9 has started in earnest.

The Waterberg Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced Tuesday 17 July, as the date for the by-elections.

Spa Park-based businessman, Eddie Arschendorf, has been unveiled as the face of the Democratic Alliance to retain the ward.

Ward 9 became vacant after the resignation of DA Councillor Kobus van der Merwe, who has relocated to George in the Western Cape.

There were — as at Wednesday 18 July — just a few days to go before polls to be facilitated by the IEC.

Ngoepe said allegedly stolen items such as three motor vehicles, cellphones and 54 boxes of school shoes, were recovered.

Six sachets of crystal methane drugs and 48 packets of the nyaope concoction, were also recovered.

Ngoepe said that all the arrested suspects were scheduled to appear before their respective regional courts, while investigations continued.

As we all get into a frenzy about Russia 2018, my own memories travelled back to South Africa 2010.

In an attempt to offer a different narrative regarding the present tournament in the Russian cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, I asked a colleague to revisit her own memories and images of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

At the time Die Pos/ The Post editor Keina Swart related to me how her son, Daneel (then aged six), kicked up a storm at a local retail store, pressing on the parents to buy the noisy vuvuzela.

Her husband, Niel, had to scratch his head and come up with creative ideas as to how to or not buy the loud wind instrument, especially for kids who had no clue what noise was all about.

Niel struck a shop-floor deal with the youngster, to the effect that him and other visiting kids, could only blow the vuvuzela each time Bafana Bafana scored.

The Swart’s had hosted a couple of friends for the opening pomp and ceremony, culminating in the first match-up between Bafana Bafana and Mexico.

It was in the first stanza that

playmaker, Simphiwe Tshablala, broke into a run on the left flank, receiving a pinpoint pass, and then converting this into a sublime goal.

Niel and Keina’s eardrums are still haunted by the loud sound of the vuvuzela from the kids, so to speak.

We have tried to improvise on this touching human interest story, because there was a time when Afrikaners were supposedly passionate about the game of rugby, over any other sporting code.

Our pre-publication conference last week was characterised by blushes allround.

I for one was involved in discussions with acquaintances, when Selby “Legerby” Moima asked if I would be making it to the poet Mutabaruka’s performance in Modimolle.

I had no clue who Mutabaruka was, with Moima expressing his disappointment at my lack of knowledge about the worldwide genre of poetry.

Then during our preconference, Mzamane Ringane came up with some stunning pictures of Mutabaruka performing in Modimolle.

Mzamane said he was likewise embarrassed when he walked to the venue, alongside some local people of his own age, who were raving about Mutabaruka’s poetry, and his talk radio programmes, Cutting Edge and Steppin’ Razor.

And yet we journalists wish to pretend we are know-alls!

A story which was received with shock and awe in The BEAT’s last edition, was the one about a young woman who was sentenced to an effective five years’ imprisonment, on a charge of perjury.

Let me use this opportunity — as a village elder — to sensitise some young women to think twice before storming into a police station to report something that may not be true.

Fitness for All Club members. Photo: Supplied Mzamane Ringane The Modimolle-based Fitness for All Club was still in celebration mood following a good showing at the recent Comrades Marathon.

Fitness for All Club secretary, Tsheletsi Selepe, said a total of 20 members participated in the Comrades Marathon.

Selepe said the main objective was to develop the community of Modimolle and surrounding areas.

“We mostly thank the hardworking coach Ezekiel Moatshe. We are talking 80% success rate, with three of those being novice runners. You have got to trust the judgment of this man,” he said.

The team also joined long distance runner Mike Selamolela in celebration, for finishing his 10th race and subsequently receiving a green number.

A green number is awarded to runners after obtaining their 10th Comrades Marathon medal.

Selepe also told The BEAT the club was

delighted by the fact that women participation was increasing.

Mike Selamolela finished ahead of the entire club members, and was awarded the Bill Rowan medal.

Selamolela was followed respectively by Kwena Lamola, Piet Sekgadi, Rodney Malatjie, Samson Mabiya, Mochawane Ledwaba and Jane Dipuo Lechelele, who all got bronze medals.

Hot on the heels of Lechelele were Belinda Jacobs, Ntsako Maswanganyi, Thelmah Modiba, Lebogang Shovhote, Ezekiel Moatshe, Lucas Seleka, Makubu Pome and Lucas Seodisa who all earned Vic Clapham medals.

The Vic Clapman medal was in honour of the founder of the Comrades Marathon event.

“Experienced club bus driver (pacesetter) Lucas Seleka also guided a lot of runners to the finish just before the 12:00 noon cut-off with ease,” Selepe said.

He said it was never easy for the team because many other talented runners could not go due to lack of funds.

The school holidays SPORTEX soccer and netball games resume on Saturday 23 June, following a successful launch during the month of March.

The games would once again be staged at the Mampatile Primary School.

Fixtures for the rest of the schoolholidays were to be released early on Saturday, he said.

“The objective, as was the case in March, is to keep these youngsters away from the streets,” he said.

The holiday games were being coordinated in conjunction with a couple of other community-based civic groupings.

Youth Arts Festival a success Kego Matjiu The Youth Arts Festival which was held on Saturday 16 June at Bela-Bela’s Multipurpose Centre was a roaring success.

The event attracted the youth in large numbers.

Facilitator Hendick Morudu said the success of the Youth Day events — which attracted performers and audiences alike — was beyond his wildest expectations.

He said he was personally impressed by the performers, and the reception from the large crowd.

DJ Skido won the Battle of Disk Jockeys.

The winners of the beauty pageant were Charity Moshidi and Andries Chauke.

Fame Boys from Mpumalanga won the category of the best Hip-Hop repertoire, while Dinaledi tsa Setso from Modimolle won the traditional dance routines category.

Phillip Baloyi was named the best poet, with Kwela Pele Drama Group emerging winners in the stage theatre category.

Saoulo Sebola was named best actor.

Morudu said another event was to be organised for Heritage Day, 24 September.

The Bela-Bela event had the support of iCollege, Goldrush, Vodacom, Dros, Devco and #100KidstoVarsity.

TK Mashaba The Bela-Bela Local Football Association (LFA) has urged soccer teams playing informal football to register with the organisation.

League manager Andrew Mafafo said the association could accommodate 10 more teams ahead of the new season.

If the total of 10 clubs do join in, then the association would double up its ranks to 20 registered clubs.

To register as part of the Bela-Bela Local Football Association, clubs were being advised to contact Mafafo on 076 235 9698.

Bela-Bela Soccer Academy was still heading the log standings at 27 points from nine games.

The development side beat Happy Hearts FC 4-2 last Sunday 17 June, during a league fixture played at Moloto Stadium.

Swagger Boys FC were runaway 7-1 winners against Samba Boys FC.

Big dreams for Barcelona FC Mzamane Ringane

The newly-promoted team, Barcelona FC of Mookgophong, has set big goals ahead of the 2018/19 Waterberg SAB Regional League season.

The team, which has been playing independent tournaments and competitions since it was established in 1992, has now gained promotion into the SAFA third-tier level.

Barcelona FC affiliated in the ModimolleMookgophong LFA for the first time last season, and gained promotion after winning the title.

Team manager, Martin Mothye, said creating an environment

where players can freely engage with management, has helped the team remain solid. “This is the result of hardwork and the commitment by the players and everyone involved in the team,� he said.

Mothye said it was the responsibility of the local teams to nurture and develop local talent in and around the Waterberg region.
