Couple dead in suspected murder-suicide

Family members helped to load the body of the deceased woman onto a stretcher. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela A Bela-Bela man is believed to have murdered his wife and then committed suicide, leaving behind two suicide notes apologizing to their family and friends. The incident occurred in Extension 5 during the afternoon of Thursday, 15 October. Detectives’ Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said that the police received a call from a woman who said that her neighbours had been

found dead in their home. The police rushed to the scene to find the 37-year old man hanging from an electric cable from the roof. His wife (39) was found lying beside him in a pool of blood. It appeared as though the woman had been beaten with a variety of implements before her death. The local Emergency Medical Services certified the couple dead when they arrived at the scene. The police found notes at the scene purporting to be from the man, containing apologies to the couple’s loved ones. One

of the notes appears to be an apology to the deceased’s children, as well as instructions for the care of the children. The other note is alleged to be an apology to the mother of the female victim as well as to the male victim’s colleagues. A family member who could not be named said that she had spoken to the couple on Monday, 12 October, and had noticed that there appeared to be some tension between them. She said that she has been worried since then, and commented that the couple’s children will have to live with these memories forever.

Another member of the family said that while she could see that the couple was having trouble, she had feared to intervene. “Anyone could see from a distance that they had problems, but it is hard to intervene when they do not share their problems, but keep them bottled up instead.” The deceased couple lived in the home of the man’s late uncle, who was reportedly involved in a murder-suicide with his wife several years ago. Lieutenant-Colonel Phetla said that a case of murder had been opened, and that the investigation continued.

Lindie Bosch Jansen, the murder victim of another stabbing incident in Bela-Bela. Photo supplied TK Mashaba Residents of Bela-Bela’s Extension 1 were woken up at around 07:00 in the morning of Monday, 19 October, by the noise of a security vehicle crashing and overturning. The vehicle, which belongs to Sondela Nature Reserve, went off the road and tumbled into part of the storm water drainage system, leaving one of the personnel injured. According to bystanders, they had never

seen a car roll into the ditch that way before. It appears as though the security personnel were pursuing a suspect who allegedly stole copper cable from the resort. They chased him from the resort until they ended up in the ditch. Of the two people in the vehicle, only one was injured in the smash. Police Detective’s Commander LieutenantColonel Abel Phetla said that a case of negligent driving was registered after the incident. Sondela Nature Reserve did not respond to requests for comment.

Informal settlement without water for months Justin Steyn While many areas of Bela-Bela experienced several water shortages over the past weeks, residents of an informal settlement near Extension 8 of the Bela-Bela Township say that they have had no water supplied to them for as long as four months. Josias Ramalekana and Simon Phaka are among the residents who spoke to The BEAT about the settlement’s current conditions. “In July, water to the settlement was unexpectedly cut off. Residents connected hose pipes at a nearby dam situated on an abandoned farm, but the municipality disconnected it the same day,” said Ramalekana. Ramalekana said that municipal officials assured residents that water would once more be supplied by this has not yet happened. He also said that the residents now collect water from a farm near the settlement.

“Every day after work, I go home and take a wheelbarrow to collect water from a farm which is situated about 500 meters from my home. Luckily the farmers do not mind, but we should be able to have water in our settlement,” said Phaka. The men said that they are also concerned with housing provision to the area. According to Phaka, RDP houses have been built and assigned to registered people living in the area but have found that immigrants and unregistered are often found living in these houses. “The municipality built RDP houses for people who have registered, but I have found that people who are not the registered occupants are often the ones who occupy them,” he said. It has also been alleged that councillors may have been bribed to allow the unregistered occupants to live in these houses. At the time of going to press the ward councillor Freddy Hlungwane could not be reached for comment.

Desmain Clarke is accused of the murder of Lindie Bosch Jansen, who was killed in a knife attack on Sunday, 18 October. Photo: Herman Steyn Justin Steyn A birthday celebration ended in tragedy after a stabbing involving a primary school teacher at Laerskool Warmbad. In the early hours of Sunday, 18 October, Lindie Bosch-Jansen was packing up the family’s possessions after celebrating her boyfriend’s father’s 60th birthday when she was attacked. According to Bela-Bela police spokesperson Maria Maleto, Jansen put her two children in her car and went back inside to fetch more of her belongings. Maleto said that when Bosch returned to her car, she found a man who appeared to be attempting to break in, and was attacked. “The man stabbed her in the ribs and fled the scene. The suspect jumped over the Laerskool fence, which cut him on his

arms while he was attempting to escape. He was tracked and was found hiding at one of the houses near the school, and was arrested.” Pending his arrest for his involvement in the murder, Desmain Clarke, a man who reportedly lived at Spa Park, was taken to the Bela-Bela Hospital where he was treated for his wounds. Clarke made his first court appearance at the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 20 October, and was ordered to reappear on Tuesday, 27 October to apply for bail. The arrest was affected with the help of Bela-Bela Crime Support. The Bela-Bela Cluster Commander Colonel Homann thanked Bela-Bela Crime Support for their fast response and assistance in tracing the suspect. He encouraged the community to work hand-in-hand with the police in combating crime.

Still no plans for Bela-Bela Parking meters There are still no official plans for the parking meters in Bela-Bela’s CBD that were shut off barely two years after being installed. Photo supplied

Justin Steyn There are still no plans for the deactivated parking meters in Chris Hani Road in BelaBela. The meters were installed in October 2013 and apparently cost R1 million to procure and install. At the time the municipal spokesperson, Matome Sebelebele, said that the parking meters had been installed to supply additional revenue to the municipality. He also said that

the municipality was consulting with shopping centres around town to install boom gates to regulate and order parking. This has yet to take place. During a council meeting in June the BelaBela Municipality’s Head of the Department for Social Community Services, TJ Mothapo, admitted that the meters were no longer functional and that car guards are once again becoming more numerous in the town’s Central Business District (CBD). “The parking metres in the town’s CBD are no longer operational,” Mothapo said. “We have also received many complaints about car guards, some of whom have even gone so far as to force motorists to pay them for looking after their vehicles.” Sebelebele recently said that the parking meters had not been on the table of discussion but is adamant that the municipality will reinstate the meters as well as add additional meters in the CBD. He admitted that the municipality has failed at monitoring the meters stating that there were insufficient officers to supervise the meters. “We did not have enough traffic officials to monitor these meters, but we as the municipality will ensure that the meters are back online soon,” he said.

Water in Bela-Bela restored Justin Steyn Water to the town of Bela-Bela has been restored after a series of cut offs said to be the result of a faulty pump at one of the reservoirs in Renaissance. “This pump only starts pumping to the bigger reservoir once the reservoir it is pumping from is 90% full and switches on and off automatically. This pump broke down due to old age — it is said to be older than 20 years,” said a municipal representative. This pump was reportedly replaced about a week ago which caused the bigger reservoir to become empty. “Certain areas have struggled with insufficient water as the Municipality is still struggling to fill this bigger reservoir with water,” a previous update from the Bela-Bela municipality was quoted as saying. This was announced by the municipality and relevant stakeholders during a meeting on Monday 12 October and that a contractor was assigned to repair the damaged motor during the course of the week. In an update from the municipality it was announced that a new pump at the reservoir at Renaissance has been installed but it is leaking at one of its joints. The reservoir is said to be mainly used for storage capacity but also supplies water to the BelaBela hospital and the two reservoirs situated next to Renaissance. The most recent updates indicated that the reservoirs levels are returning to normal and that the municipality is currently sourcing parts to fix the leak in the reservoir. The municipality has meanwhile urged residents to use water sparingly and only when absolutely necessary.

Long-awaited interim services have recently gone under construction in Koppewaai Bela-Bela. Residents of Extension 25 in Koppewaai have been waiting for more than a year for these facilities and other establishments to be set up in the area. Last year the Housing Development Agency (HDA) partnered with the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) and the Bela-Bela municipality to seek ways to address issues related to urgent housing needed for the area. The project also aims to implement new schools, crèches, a library and a clinic. At the time the area’s ward councillor, Kobus van der Merwe, said that these planned developments may be delayed or may not happen at all. “A survey conducted last

year by CoGHSTA and the HDA found that an estimated R72 million is needed to supply the area with services such as storm water drainage and sewage disposal. The local municipality does not have the money for these services,” he said. Despite financial backlogs, Van der Merwe claimed that finances for interim services such as water and toilet facilities has been approved by CoGHSTA since August 2014, but nothing has surfaced until recently. Van der Merwe recently confirmed that the planned temporary interim services are currently being constructed and are being funded by CoGHSTA. He also confirmed that two schools will be built in the area. Van der Merwe added that more permanent facilities are expected to be supplied to Koppewaai but a tender is yet to be advertised. The projected development costs are said to cost R400 million and will be funded by CoGHSTA.

Metro FM DJ to come to Bela-Bela

CHARITY / ENTERTAINMENT / SCHOOL

Businessmen collaborate on planned skate park

TK Mashaba Waterberg music fans are waiting with bated breath for Metro FM DJ Paul Mtirara, who will be performing at Maks Chisanyama in Bela-Bela on Saturday, 31 October. Menzi Newenya, the co-owner of Maks, told The BEAT that the preparations are proceeding well. They are expecting a massive turnout from Bela-Bela and the surrounding area, as Mtirara is a very popular celebrity. “We are looking forward to the event,” he said. “This is our business’ second anniversary.” “Paul is an excellent DJ, and the event will also give exposure to local DJs who will be playing with him.” Ngwenya urged fans to follow the allwhite dress code for the event, and to remember to prepurchase their tickets at Maks Chisanyama. Mtirara, who is the host of the popular Sunday radio show Chill Factor, was born in South Africa but raised in Switzerland. Returning home, he was given an opportunity to work with a small radio station in the Eastern Cape, Tru-FM, which started him on this career.

Since joining Metro FM, Mtirara has become the popular host of the Sunday show Chill Factor, from 12:00 to 15:00. He also performs on the station from 03:00 until 06:00. Mtirara will be joined by a number of local DJs at the event, which will kick off at noon on the 31st of October.

The BEAT previously reported about a young businessman, Marnus Luüs of BelaBela, who plans to build a series of recreation facilities in the form of skateboard parks in the town. Luüs said that such a facility would help the town’s economic growth and reduce criminal activities among young people because “they will have a place they can go to, to relax without getting involved with drugs or alcohol.” “I think that a facility like this will help the youth and the town develop in a positive way,” he said. NJ van Heerden, another young businessman, has recently jumped in on the project and spoke about how matters currently stand. “My passion for this is aimed at young people, who are suffering in our community and especially in the township,” he said.

Van Heerden said he realized that a lot of young people are bored and have lost their drive and ambition, which leads to alcoholism and drug abuse. “I have established an organization called Change to remind people that things can change, things can improve, especially with the right support network. The slogan of the organization is “A Community Upliftment Initiative”. Van Heerden also said that an area for the skate park has been identified and that they will be asking for local churches and schools to help fund the project. He said that they would also like to get the local municipality on board as a strategic partner for the project. “Marnus and I are currently working on designing the skate park so that we can determine the costs and then Marnus will go around seeking sponsorships. The idea is that it should be similar to the one that was built in Venice Beach, Los Angeles.” Van Heerden said he has also come into contact with the designers of that particular skate park and they have agreed to assist with minimal costs as it is for a good cause. “The development of this type of park won’t happen overnight, there is a lot of planning to be done. The community should not think it will happen in a month or two because that is totally unrealistic,” he said.

MEC commemorates World Food Day in Bela-Bela MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development Joy Matshoge arrives at the World Food Day event, on Friday 16 October. Photo: Mzamane Ringane

Lizzy Bapela Limpopo MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Joy Matshoge took a lead in commemorating World Food Day in Bela-Bela on Friday, 16 October. The event was held at Moloto Sports Grounds as part of their Food Security Month activities. Departmental spokesperson Sipho Dikgale highlighted that October is celebrated as Food Security Month to intensify public awareness on issues pertaining to food security in the country, and to strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. He added that World Food Day is celebrated annually around the world on 16 October, in honour of the founding date of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The main objective of World Food Day is to create awareness on issues of global food insecurity. As one of the United Nations’ specialist organs which was founded in 1945, FAO declared the day 16 October, the World Food Day since 1981. This year’s event was held under the theme; “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty”. The event was held to highlight the plight of more than 900 million undernourished people, most of whom live in rural areas and rely on agriculture as their main source of income and survival. In her speech, MEC Matshoge said that South Africa boasts one of the most extensive social security network that pays

social grant to the elderly, children, the disabled and the indigent, amongst others. She added that the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has put in place various interventions to end hunger and such include Fetsa Tlala, a flagship programme that empowers subsistence and smallholder farmers as well as rural communities. She also said that this event has been celebrated worldwide for more than three decades now and this is a clear indication of the huge and daunting challenges that the triple menaces of chronic hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition/undernutrition pose to humankind. The MEC further indicated that Limpopo has dubbed the bread basket of the country and the province prides itself in being a major exporter of among others, tomatoes, mangoes, macadamia nuts, paw paws, litchis, oranges and other fruit and vegetables to other parts of the country. She added that yet in backyard it appears that the dehumanising scourge of chronic hunger is tenaciously gripping some communities and this cannot be allowed to continue unabated. Meanwhile, the MEC cut the ribbon during the commemoration and piles of food were taken to the local municipal offices so that they can be donated to local communities later through existing structures. Members of the community shouted during this announcement that they will be keeping an eye on the situation ensure that this promise does take place as they are afraid that some councillors or officials might use the food for their personal or political gain.

Belaveau’s Winners Park lived up to their name on Sunday, 18 October, when they gave Terrors FC a 4-0 beating that the other team will not soon forget. Not at all intimidated by Terrors’ home ground crowd, the Polokwane team played with skill and composure. This was Terrors’ second loss since the league opened.
