Kamogelo is queen We appreciate the generous support from the sponsors

TK Mashaba Poise, posture and a fertile mind were some of the qualities Kamogelo Phora needed to romp home with the Miss Ikageng Youth Centre beauty pageant on Saturday, 19 August. The gala event, held at the multipurpose centre in Bela-Bela township. Proceedings were spiced up with arts and culture performances by, among others, a theatrical spectacle by the BelaBela High School drama group, which also came out tops in this category. As for the oval-faced Phora, the judges said they were impressed by the manner

in which she articulated herself at question time. Her poise and posture on the ramp were the cherry on top, for the Bela Bela High School learner. Looking petite in a sleeveless silk white dress and matching high-heeled shoes, the reigning queen had not only the judging panel, but the packed multipurpose centre audience, eating out of her palm. On the panel of judges were Daphney Bapela, Khotso Mputle of Bela-Bela, and Joe Mokupi from Mokopane. Aaron Mathe, a learner from Ulando Combined School, took to the ramp dressed in a purple suede jacket,

rounded off with a white T-shirt, faded denims and dark blue sneakers, swaggering away with the Mr Igageng title. Raeleng High School learner, Charity Motshidi, swept onto the stage dressed in a black evening dress, the top of which was decorated with golden threads, completed with off-beige high-heeled shoes, and was crowned first princess. Stage drama and story-telling offered a different narrative to the broader event. Organiser Tebogo Modiba of Ikageng Youth Centre said “we appreciate the generous support from the sponsors.

Drama at Modi-Mall

DA administration celebrates progress

Police rushed to the scene of the false alarm. Photo supplied Justin Steyn The Modi-Mall in Modimolle resembled a real-life Hollywood drama, blaring sirens, blue lights and crouching police officers armed to the teeth, responding to a suspected burglary which was recently reported to be underway. According to Warrant Officer James Findley of the Modimolle SAPS, a call was made by security personnel to the effect that a break-in was in progress at two clothing stores. “On Friday, 11 August, we received a call from the mall’s security. The complainant claimned movements could be heard from (above) the ceiling,” he said. But alas, all this turned out to be a false alarm. Findley said on arrival members of the policve discovered security personnel went into panic station mode, after one of the stores’ windows burst open from some form of pressure, or otherwise. “We did discover that one of the shops’ windows had somehow burst open and caused panic. The area was assessed and it was determined the window may have burst open because of (pressure from the)

temperature inside the (affected) store,” he said. Meanwhile, there was an armed robbery – the real thing - at a clothing chain store outlet at Bela-Bela’s central business district, which left both shoppers and workers in shock. Accordding to Captain Annemarie Smith of the Bela-Bela SAPS, five suspects armed with firearms entered the store at around mid-morning on Thursday, 10 August. She said the armed men entered the shop and ordered all employees and customers to hudle at a corner of the premises, before ransacking the retail store, allegedly helping themselves to certain items. The alleged stolen loot included, among other items, mobile phones, laptops and an undisclosed amount of cash. Security, community patrols and other witnesses were convinced the alleged armed robbers were Zulu-speaking. After helping themselves to the loot, the men sped off in what witnesses described as a silver-coloured Toyota sedan, with Gauteng registration numbers. Anyone with information which could lead to the arrest of the alleged culprits, is advised to make contact with the Bela-Bela police on 014 736 9700.

Seven killed in crash on the N1 Justin Steyn A total of seven people have been killed and two others injured following a head-on collision on the N1 highway between Mookgophong and Mokopane on Sunday, 20 August. According to the provincial spokesperson for the department of transport, Joshua Kwapa, those injured included a five-yearold child, who has been hospitalized. Both drivers involved in the accident were among

the deceased. Kwapa said the accident was the result of alleged reckless driving. “We suspect the cause of the accident is reckless and negligent driving, but obviously these are preliminary. The investigations will reveal the real cause of the accident. The accident happened on the N1 near Tobais, when one of the sedans travelled into oncoming traffic, collided with another sedan in the process, and the drivers of both vehicles as well as five people died on impact,” Kwapa said in a statement.

Lizzy Bapela The DA in the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality has patted itself on the back, claiming to be making good progress, following a full year in office. The party also claimed to have made a huge impact in the lives of ordinary people, since taking over the municipality from the ANC a year ago. Mayor Marlene Van Staden pointed out her administration inherited a financiallychallenged municipality, against the

backdrop of alleged lack of co-operation from the outgoing ANC administration. In her comments, she said the DA’s achievements included the supply of water and sanitation, housing and infrastructure. Van Staden said debt collection rates increased from 58% to 76%. Among the other achievements, she said, was the provision of free Wi-fi being installed at selected locations. Higher up on the DA’s list was a workshop for local contractors, with the objective to be transparent in terms of tenders. “This proves that where the DA governs, we prioritize the needs of residents by redistributing the budget to poor communities, providing water and proper sanitation,” she said. ANC ward councillor, Rufus Magoro, poured a bucket of cold water on the DA’s achievements, saying many of the programmes were started by the previous administration.

Clean health bill for Waterberg Justin Steyn Large parts of the Waterberg received a clean bill of health following reports of massive corruption allround. The Limpopo Department of Transport has uncovered the alleged theft of R7.4 million through intensive investigations by the internal Anti-Fraud and Corruption Unit. “Three officials have been dismissed while ten (others) resigned, following the investigations. One official is currently going through a disciplinary hearing (process),” said the department’s spokesperson, Joshua Kwapa. Kwapa said the breakthrough resulted in an intense investigation, following information that revenue was lost at various traffic stations at the district offices. “According to the information, officers were collecting postal orders from various post offices in Limpopo addressed to (the affected) traffic stations. They would then redeem the postal orders, but fail to deposit the money into the departmental bank account. This therefore necessitated the investigation, which found the rot

(dated) from as far back as 2009,” Kwapa said. He said it was further discovered some of the officials allegedly reduced amounts on the summonses, even though the traffic offenders had sent the original required amount by means of postal orders. “The intense investigation revealed the implicated officials did not bank the money into the departmental bank account, (but) instead they stole the money and used it for their personal gain. The department consequently opened criminal cases against the suspects, through the commercial crime unit,” Kwapa said. He further confirmed the alleged fraudulent activity had limited effect on the broader Waterberg District traffic offices. “The aforementioned incident has only had an effect on the (traffic) offices in Mokopane. The rest of the offices (throughout the region) are unaffected,” he said. The head of traffic in Bela-Bela, Isack Monari, said all finances were collected by security personnel on a daily basis. He added an audit report had been conducted in the past week, and cleared the office of any fraudulent activity.

Van Staden spits fire over Sarah

Lizzy Bapela Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden has called on the Public Protector to probe the previous ANC administration at Mookgophong. The DA announced on Wednesday, 16 August, that the Public Protesctor in Limpopo was to be called to investigate alleged irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure by the erstwhile administration. It had been reported that the new administration uncovered six alleged irregular and fraudulent transactions, valued at R684 298. The transactions, the DA has allegd, were

entered into between former Mayor Sarah Monyamane, and several service providers in the run-up to the 2016 local government elections. Van Staden said a further 11 allegedly suspicious transactions valued at R279 905 had also been uncovered. She said other cases related to the alleged irregular purchasing of food parcels in excess of R250 000, which were handed over to potential voters ahead of the hotlycontested local government elections. Other transactions allegedly included the hiring of tents, chairs and catering at what the DA described as “obscene” amounts. The DA handed the Public Protector a set of files containing what the party believed to be documentary proof of the allegations.

DA comfort for Moswoeu

Sello Moswoeu (second from left) flanked by the DA’s David Senosha, Frans Mothokwa and Rachael Masemola, Photo supplied Justin Steyn Politicians from the DA closed ranks to offer comfort to Bela-Bela EFF councillor, Sello Moswoeu, who was on Tuesday, 22 August, recovering in hospital. Moswoeu sounded enthusiastic during an interview with The BEAT, from his sick bed at a hospital in Polokwane. He assured his colleagues from the EFF and DA he would soon be back in the council chambers. “I was not surprised but humbled to have received visits from the DA councillors,” he said. According to Moswoeu, he had been absent from the public domain due to a health complication he had suffered in July. “I am recovering from a blood pressure

complication since the middle of July. I was admitted to the Bela-Bela hospital, but was transferred to the Polokwane provincial hospital. I am recovering well and will be back soon,” he said. Moswoeu said he was not surprised that he had received a visit from politicians from the DA. “In council we debate and have our differences, but out of office we are still for one another as colleagues, especially on a personal level. I am very thankful for all of the support,” he said. He personally posted his picture on Facebook receiving a delegation of visitors from the DA at Bela-Bela. Moswoeu has also extended a hand of gratitude to his fellow “fighters” for their overwhelming support. “I am receiving calls from members of the EFF on my recovery progress. I am thankful for the support,” Moswoeu said.

The community of Bela-Bela closed ranks to fight the runaway fire. Photo supplied Justin Steyn A cloud of smoke billowed over Bela-Bela on Wednesday, 16 August. The smoke was triggerd by a runaway fire raging on the veld along the N1 in the vicinity of the shooting range. Emergency services such as the police, Working on Fire, Advanced Paramedics Assistance (APA) and scores of residents rushed to the scene to combat the fire.

A combined effort by firefighters and the community managed to douse out the fire. APA spokesperson, Andy Gill, said a small Doberman pincher was found wondering around after apparently managing to escape the blaze. “We discovered a miniature Doberman pincher rescued off the N1, trying to get away from the fire. She remained with us until the owner collected her the next day,” Gill said. Tragically, a family lost almost

Several businesses donated towards the tragedy, with sums of money varying from R1000 to as high as R27 000. Further donations in lieu of clothing and household items can be made at Angels Scrap in Mentz Avenue. The cause of the fire had not, at the time of going to press, been established.

Bela-Bela hosts government heads Lizzy Bapela The popular Zebula Lodge on the outskirts of Bela-Bela hosted a provincial induction workshop for MEC’s and heads of departments, on Monday 15 August and Tuesday 16 August. Provincial government spokesperson, Phuti Seloba, said duties of HoDs and MECs were a core function of service delivery. He said those in attendance were guided by the provisions of

Former WATA public relations officer Israel Molusi. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela’s well-known taxi operator, Malesela David Mogale, has been re-elected for a third term of office as the Warmbaths Taxi Association’s (WATA) chairman. The results were confirmed following elections held on Tuesday, 15 August, at the Jinnah Park Community Hall. A total of 48 taxi operators from Bela-Bela, and also from its feeder associations, gathered at the hall to elect the new executive committee for the next five years. Almost all of the candidates who availed themselves for the various leadership positions were elected unopposed. The election results saw the WATA deputy chairperson, Alfred Mosime, also retaining his portfolio, with Connie Pholosi re-elected as secretary. Sakkie Motalane was elected deputy secretary, with Thabo Baloyi as treasurer, in the place

of the outgoing incumbent, Mike Molele. The latter was elected disciplinary committee chairperson, while Thabo Ntseke was elected public relations officer, replacing ertwhile incumbent, Israel Molusi. The grievance officer position was won by Jacob Monwametsi, while Musa Mashugu was elected training officer for a second term. Robby Selwane was confirmed as the WATA operational manager. Bela-Bela rank manager, Sunday Modike, declared the elections process a success, saying the local taxi association officials worked tirelessly during the campaign ahead of the elections, making sure leaders with capacity were elected into these strategic positions. Mogale could not hold back his excitement, applauding all those who participated in the elections.

the constitution. Seloba further said the overall objective of the induction workshop was to re-emphasize the importance of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). Some of the issues covered at the workshop included constitutional and legislative functions, and ongoing paradigm shifts in the management of the public sector. “This programme supports MECs and HoDs with a comprehensive compendium of education, training and development solutions. The

main objective in this case is to improve the ability of a candidate to implement service delivery of their respective departments with greater consistency, efficiency and effectiveness, taking into consideration available resources versus the people’s needs. “It also equips them with the requisite PFMA fundamentals, and an Afrocentric approach that is required to deliver strategic objectives of government in pursuit of NDP 2030,” he said.

Township tourism idea goes national

M Court boss Semakaleng Mothapo. Photo supplied.

TK Mashaba The customised donkey-drawn tourists’ wagon of Bela-Bela has galloped its way into national

prominence. The wagon was the brainchild of township entrepreneur, Semakaleng Mothapo, trading as M Court. On Tuesday, 22 August, Mothapo broke the news to The BEAT that the idea was to be posted on the website of the government enterprise development agency, as “a successful business story led by a young person”. The cherry on top was that Mothapo and the broader initiative were lined up to be profiled in a

magazine published by a leading high-fashion clothing store, in its September edition. Mothapo said it was humbling to receive this kind of recognition at the highest possible level. In recent weeks, Mothapo had a strategic meeting with members of the Bela-Bela business community to thrash out plans to network in terms of bringing tourists – both local and foreign – into their venues. Black Rose Connexion events management head, Matome Sebelebele, was toying around with the idea to set up events, at which tourists transported on the customised wagon could be brought in to have a good time in the township. The 18-seater donkey-drawn wagon initiative was launched last December, with several tourists taken into the township for a free ride, as a test run. The publicity from the enterprise development agency website and, over and above, pride of place in the pages of a high-fashion magazine, had the potential to send the donkey wagon initiative brand into a tailspin.

Unemployed on a gold rush Justin Steyn

The unemployed at Bela-Bela were offered new hope by the planned opening of a bingo facility on the Waterfront. The Gauteng-based GoldRussh Gaming Group has hit town, advertising upwards of 50 direct jobs ranging from managers to cleaners. The company placed advertisements in the local press, inviting all sorts of skilled personnel to apply. GoldRush Gaming Group was at the time of going to press at advanced stages of transforming space at the Waterfront into a bingo facility. Scores of local unemployed youths have been dropping off

CVs at the facility, hoping to carve a niche into the shrinking job market. Amanda Mocco of Bela-Bela Tourism viewed the entry of Golgrush Gaming Group into town as a potential game-changer, in terms of economic activity. “There is nothing for tourists to do after five in the afternoon. Tourists then go to bars or go to their chalets to spend the night. It is also worth noting that the hall will also make provision for children as it will be equipped with a gaming arcade,” she said. The gaming and hospitality company has advertised vacancies for, among others, security personnel, waiters, barmen and cashiers.

GoldRush casino’s spokesperson, Dorick Sithole, said the bingo facility would benefit the town in various ways. Among these, he explained, was the broader inward investment into the town, “both financially and in terms of infrastructure, job creation and a new source of entertainment for responsible adults.” Lucas Phala of the Bela-Bela Business Agency and Community Organization, said the hall would indeed benefit locals, but warned against the potential for what he termed political interference.

TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s Thusanang Special School was scheduled to honour its founder, Belgian national Cecil Lemanhaeye on Friday, 25 August. Thusanang Special School deputyprincipal, Shadi Malebye, said the occasion was to be attended by likewise institution luminaries, such as former and present board members.

She said the school’s origins date back to humble beginnings in the vicinity of the township’s community hall, until the intervention of Lemanhaeye. The Belgian philanthropist invested resources to relocate the institution to its present premises, 27 years ago. Warmbathsh Taxi Association wins Doves Cup Lizzy Bapela Members of the Warmbaths Taxi Association (WATA) were singing songs of victory on Monday, 21 August, after they were crowned kings of the Doves Limpopo Taxi Drivers Soccer Championships. The tournament’s semi-finals and finals took place at the Mahwelereng Stadium outside Mokopane on Sunday, 19 August. Two local taxi associations, WATA and Mokopane Taxi Association (MOTA) battled it out for top honours, with WATA emerging 3-2 victors on penalties. The regulation time scoreline was at 2-all. Interestingly, WATA and MOTA are respectively chaired by brothers, Malesela Mogale and Abram Mogale. At the end of the high-tempo test of strengths, WATA was awarded a soccer kit, a soccer ball, trophy and medals for both officials and players. Coach Sunday Modise, with the able backing of captain Shiba Maswanganyi, led his troops throughout the tough

early stages of the tournament, featuring a total of 18 teams. Tactician-cum-excellence, Jan Kganyago, was Modise’s assistant coach for the duration of the tournament. WATA performed outstandingly throughout the tournament. The Bela-Bela taximen had a tough time, first beating Thabazimbi’s Regorogile squad 3-1, to advance to the latter stages of the competition, sending the Thabazimbi men tumbling from the tournament in the process. The next stage of the tournament - the quarter-finals - was hosted in Mookgophong, featuring eight teams. WATA advanced to the quarterfinals after knocking out the Mookgophong Taxi Association. In the semi-finals, WATA sent Mokopane’s Leporogong Taxi Association packing with a narrow 1-0 scoreline. WATA’s sister taxi association, the Marapyane Taxi Association attended the tournament to offer support to their WATA counterparts, even though the latter knocked the Marapyane lads out of the tournament with a 3-1 margin, during the preliminary stages.

At the finals, after the regulation time score ended 2-all, MOTA lost on the dreaded penalty shootout, after scoring two and missing three of the spot kicks. WATA scored three of the penalties and missed two, thus emerging the reigning champions. The Bela-Bela team’s goalminder, Thabang “Taylor” Maluleka became the hero after stopping some of the penalty kicks by the lads from Mokopane. The WATA goal-keeper, together with his teammates, Phillip “Figo” Magoai, Ephraim “Rama” Matjila, Jerry Mphela and Saddam Ledwaba, were hailed as some of the best players of the tournament. Bela-Bela taxi rank manager, Sunday Modike, was thrilled the WATA soccer squad worked so hard all the way to the finals, and ultimately being crowned champions. He said such actitivities strengthened relations with sister taxi associations, and the broader commuting public. The local taximen would continue to work hard so as to be ready to defend their hard-won title next time around.
