Massive drug

The police were alerted that a possible suspicious vehicle carrying drugs and cash may have been planning to enter the country, and the Groblersbrug border police

sent out a warning. “A bulletin was sent out to all police stations in the area,” said Colonel Ronel Otto, police spokesperson for Limpopo. “Police officers from the Bulgerivier station spotted, stopped, and searched the vehicle.” Initially the search appeared to be in vain, but members of the border police under Warrant Officer Hennie van Staden soon arrived on the scene. The border police focuses on monitoring imports and exports between South Africa and Botswana, and makes it their business

to identify and investigate suspicious vehicles. “Smuggling between South Africa and Botswana is definitely our field of expertise and we know what to look for when we are searching a suspicious vehicle,” said Van Staden. The vehicle was thoroughly searched and yielded R139 900 and $10 000 in cash, as well as heroin with an estimated street value of R93 million, in 1kg packaging. NP200-bakkie. “The driver was a 33-year old man originally from Tanzania. He has been arrested, and appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on charges of owning, trading, and smuggling, illegal drugs,” said Colonel Otto. The case has been taken over by the Limpopo Organized Crime Unit. “The suspect was calm and peaceful and never aggressive,” said a source close to the investigation. “It didn’t look as though he became angry or upset while his vehicle was being taken apart.”
