Adams pleads guilty
to murder, theft Justin Steyn
Murder accused Desmain Adams has pleaded guilty to two charges that were read to him at the Bela-Bela Magistrates court on Tuesday, 24 November. Adams has been accused of murdering a Bela-Bela educator, Lindie Bosch-Jansen, on Sunday, 18 October. During Adam’s last court appearance, the 20-year old had been charged with theft and murder. He pleaded guilty to both charges. During court proceedings, Adams admitted that he had unlawfully and intentionally stabbed Bosch-Jansen in the chest on the night in question. He also admitted that he intended to steal a Garmin GPS system from her vehicle on the night of her murder. Adams said that he only drew a knife, which he used to stab Bosch-Jansen with, when she spotted him attempting to steal the GPS system. Adams said he then fled the scene after he had stabbed Bosch-Jansen, who died in hospital on the same night. The case against Adams had been postponed on numerous occasions due to his apparent inability to speak English and an appropriate translator was sought out for him. It became apparent that Adams was fully capable of understanding and speaking English during his latest appearance. The case was postponed to Wednesday, 25 November, when a presentencing report will be drafted to appoint a probation officer.

Spare wheel theft on the rise
Justin Steyn An unusual trend of spare wheel theft has been on the rise in Bela-Bela. The BEAT received a letter from an anonymous reader who said that she had become a victim of this strange crime when she went shopping at one of the town’s shopping centres. “My Toyota Raider’s spare wheel was
stolen from a shopping centre in BelaBela and cost R7 000 to replace,” she said. “On Thursday, 19 November, we were at the Pick n Pay Centre parking. I always park where it’s a bit quieter, and we were in the centre for about an hour. When we returned I noticed a dark blue bakkie parked very close to the drivers’ side of my bakkie. I noticed that there was security nearby and drove home,” she said. She said that when she returned home she immediately noticed that her spare wheel had apparently been stolen. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of the Bela-Bela Police said that they have received several reports of similar crimes. “We are investigating several cases where spare wheels are stolen from bakkies. They are especially evident in Toyota heavy duty vehicles in bakkies,” he said. Colonel Phetla said that the reports have been on the increase lately, and mostly occur at local shopping centres. He said that it could be a small group which was responsible for the thefts. No suspects have been identified as yet.

Four on the run after senior citizen is robbed Lizzy Bapela The police in Bela-Bela are looking for suspects involved in a case of common robbery in relation to an incident that took place on the morning of Friday, 20 November. Police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto said that four suspects, a woman and three men, fled after allegedly robbing a 61-year old woman who had just withdrawn a large sum of money from the bank. The woman was apparently on her way to pay her instalment at a furniture store when the suspects approached her and said that they had picked up something that seemed like a bundle of money on the ground just behind her. The young lady then apparently informed the old woman that since they saw the money together, she would share it with her at a secret place. They both

Drug dealers and users face the might of the law Lizzy Bapela 30-year-old Jan Hlongwane of Bela-Bela had his case settled when he appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 November for dealing in nyaope. He was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment or a R10 000 fine. An officer form the Limpopo Provincial Head Office in Polokwane arrested Hlongwane in August 2014 at Extension 5. Constable Maleto said that the officer also secured four years imprisonment for 30year-old Michael Manamela on Monday, 16 November. Manamela was also arrested for dealing in August 2014, during an operation that was targeting dealers and manufactures of drugs such as nyaope. * Lucas Motaung (23) was given a fine of
R6 000 or 12 months imprisonment when he appeared in court on Thursday, 12 November for possession of drugs. The sentence was suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not found guilty of the same crime during the period of suspension. A member of the Modimolle Public Order Policing arrested him on the evening of Thursday, 5 November while he was patrolling in the township. He alleged that he drove past a group of men who were smoking and went back in order to search them, but they ran away. The officer alleged that he entered a house where people were smoking and found the accused. The police found balls of nyaope in Motaung’s pockets when he searched him and he was arrested for dealing in drugs.

went to the bushes near the show ground and on arrival the young lady told her that they should pray before sharing out the money. While they were praying, three men arrived and told her to take out all the money she had withdrawn from the bank. The victim tried to refuse but the suspects threatened to kill her. They tied her up and took her money and her phone. A case of common robbery was opened, but no suspects have been arrested yet. The police warned members of the community against believing or falling for such scams, especially now with the festive season on the way. They also advised members of the community to only ask for help at ATMs from bank security guards. “They must also avoid giving out their PIN number to anyone or carrying large amounts of cash on them” said Constable Maleto.
Modimolle police are looking for Boy Jan Mangwane. They believe that he can help them with their enquiries. Photo supplied Lizzy Bapela The police in Modimolle are investigating a case of murder following an incident that happened at a farm in Doornfontein on Friday, 20 November. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James
Findlay said that the caretaker, 40-year-old Piet de Kock, went to the farm to check on the place. According to the information received he often does this because nobody lives there, and the house was previously broken into and some items from it, including the roof, were stolen. It appears that on the day in question, the caretaker saw the suspects roaming around the farm and alerted the owner. Unfortunately his phone died while still on the call and the owner asked another person to rush there and check what was going on. When the man arrived at the farm, he found de Kock lying behind his bakkie and already shot in the head. Warrant Officer Findlay said that the victim died on the way to the hospital and the exact circumstances of the shooting are still unknown. He added that investigating Officer Warrant Officer Koos van den Berg is busy with the investigations. The police are looking for a man called Boy Jan Mangwane, as they believe that he can assist them in the case. He is alleged to be a resident of Phagameng and is 37 years old. Anyone who knows his whereabouts is urged to contact the officer on 072 534 5334.

Lizzy Bapela The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 36-year-old man to two years imprisonment or a R10 000 fine on a case of housebreaking and theft levelled against him. John Moremi was sentenced when he appeared in court on Wednesday, 18 November. Bela-Bela police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto told The BEAT that Moremi’s arrest and court appearance are a
sequel to an incident that happened on the morning of Sunday, 25 October at Noodhulp Farm. She said that the complaint alleged that his neighbour informed him about someone being seen roaming around inside his shop and he rushed to the place to see what was going on. She added that on arrival, the complainant saw the accused, Moremi, running out of the shop and he managed to arrest him with the help of the security guards. Constable Maleto further said that the accused was also found in possession of scrap metals, which he was also fined for. * In a separate case a 26-year-old woman, also from Bela-Bela, was sentenced to a period of 10 months in jail or pay a R2 000 fine when she appeared in court on Wednesday, 18 November for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Constable Maleto said that this follows an incident that happened during the early hours of 5 September 2015. Linah Mathekga appears to have followed the complainant into the ladies’ room at a local tavern and accused her of stealing her boyfriend. When the complainant tried to respond, she stabbed her with a broken bottle. Constable Maleto said that the victim was taken to the Bela-Bela Hospital for treatment and the suspect was traced and arrested.

A series of incidents at Settlers Agricultural High School have left staff, parents and students in a panic. Several matriculants have allegedly been wreaking havoc on the premises by damaging the school’s hostel, tuck shop, and offices. Police intervention was requested at one stage, and a group of matric students were arrested for allegedly damaging school property. According to Bela-Bela Police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto, police responded to a report that learners had broken into the school’s tuck shop on Monday, 16 November. Maleto said that a teacher had been notified that learners were consuming alcohol near the pool on the same night. The teacher went to the pool and ordered the learners to return to their hostel, only to be woken up by the school’s security, who told the teacher that the same learners had allegedly returned and damaged the school’s tuck shop. Maleto said that several teachers rushed to the scene, where they found that the tuck shop had been broken into. Boxes of meat, electrical appliances, padlocks, and groceries were among the items that were stolen. Two learners have been arrested but it is said that the school’s principal, Chris Mabunda, has dropped the charges against them. The BEAT spoke to two witnesses, who asked to remain anonymous, about their experiences. “There is little to no security at the school. Security has been appointed but is only stationed at the main gate. Learners, teachers and hostel staff do not feel safe at the school because of these learners,” one of the witnesses said. The witnesses say that the matrics have
become completely unruly and have shown no regard or fear for anyone at the school. The witnesses said that the matrics have been found in possession of vast stashes of drugs in their hotel rooms, and have been known to threaten anyone who tried to take the items. “Many of the younger learners are very afraid and no longer wish to stay in the school. The matrics are intimidating everyone and have damaged several of the hostels. The damage to one of the hostels is estimated to cost about R45 000.” It is alleged that the learners hide tools in the roofs of their rooms, which they use to cause the damage. “The learners have threatened to burn down several of the hostels and classes on the last day of school,” one of the witnesses said. Chaos erupted at the school again when a group of matric learners allegedly assaulted security personnel who were on patrol. Maleto said that the police received a complaint of assault on Monday, 23 November, from the school. “Guards were on foot patrol around the premises when they heard people talking in one of the classrooms. The security guards approached the crowd and asked them to leave. One of the learners allegedly attacked a guard with an unknown object and the others are said to have kicked him. He sustained multiple injuries and had to be hospitalized.” Some of the learners alleged to be involved in the incident have been identified and arrested, and a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened by the police officers who responded to the complaint. “This is proof that the students are out of control and are intent on causing maximum carnage,” the witness said. The school did not respond to requests for comment.

Boikanyo Engelina, also from the Waterberg, was smiling all the way to the bank after scooping a R80 000 cash prize as winner in the Top Producer for Informal Markets category, while the top Producer for Household Consumption, with a cash prize of R40 000, went to Nkateko Ishmael Baloyi from Mopani. Malebalong Primary School from Mopani walked away with R30 000 for first place in the Primary School in Agriculture section, while Moroathebe Secondary School from Sekhukhune received a similar amount in the Top Secondary School in Agriculture
category. As a gesture of appreciation for the Limpopo young farmers’ economic contribution and in order to get them more involved in agricultural development, the MEC for Agriculture, Joy Matshog, pledged that all winners should attend the upcoming XIV World Forestry Conference. Moagi was one of the farmers who was invited to attend the International Conference that was held at the Chief Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban in September. Matshoge said that the idea fitted well with the vision of former ANC President O.R. Tambo, who once said, “A nation that does not care for its youth has no future and does not deserve one.” “Agriculture is doable. I am going to visit all the winners to see what we have seen here tonight. We will come to check your projects and see how we can assist you,” Matshog said.

Reuben Fumani Chauke is the provincial coordinator for the BLF in Limpopo. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane A new revolutionary movement to the left of Julius Malema’s EFF is steadily gaining ground in the Waterberg and Limpopo. Militant Modimolle firebrand Reuben Fumani Chauke, who currently serves as the provincial coordinator of the Black first Land First (BLF) revolutionary movement spoke to The Beat about a range of issues, among others, expropriation of land. BLF is the brainchild of former EFF heavyweight Andile Mngxitama, who fell out of favour with Julius Malema’s party. During the interview Chauke told The BEAT that chief among the reasons why left the EFF was that the party implemented changes that were contrary to its initial plans. “Our idea when we joined the EFF was land expropriation. Then Julius Malema started changing the policies and abandoned the party’s essential demand for land
expropriation,” said Chauke. This BLF coordinator said they already have full support in the University of Venda (Univen) and University of Limpopo (Turfloop). He further indicated that the youth are mostly interested in this movement because it focuses on issues that other parties have neglected. “We have full support in the University of Venda and Turfloop. We talk ideas that accommodates the youth. We are teaching them the Black Consciousness of Steve Biko and Pan-Africanism of Robert Sobukwe, which is not being spoken by political parties. Political parties talk about creating political elites. You go to a political party, you get rich and drive an expensive car”, said Chauke. Chauke said for his revolutionary movement BLF, land ownership is the most important thing. This Chauke says his movement believes the strong ethical values of Steve Biko, Robert Sobukwe and Thomas Sankara must be emulated by leaders who represents the masses. Chauke continued to say: “We don’t believe people should be in a leadership position just to enrich themselves. He said that his movement would strive hard to ensure that the power comes back to the people. In a document titled “Black First Land First Revolutionary Call”, published by Andile Mngxitama on behalf of the Interim National Coordinating Committee of the Black First! Land First! Movement, the leader said black people are last in their country and are also last when it comes to employment. “We pledge to build a revolutionary movement that is Sankarist in belief and practice, following and honouring the revolutionary legacy of Thomas Sankara. We believe that for the movement to succeed it needs a servant leadership- an accountable, democratic, responsive leadership that puts black people first”, Mngxitama was quoted in the document.
Mzamane Ringane Bitter political rivals in Mabatlane set aside their differences and joined hands in a protest march, to press home a list of demands. It was an unusual sight to see people from different political parties holding hands and protesting against what they believe affected the community across political boundaries. The Mabatlane Community Concerned Committee (MCCC) organised a march which accommodated all residents regardless of their political affiliation. Locals marched through the township of Leseding and proceeded to the Modimolle Local Municipality’s satellite offices on Friday 20 November, to hand over their memorandum of demands. Messages like “#GladysMustFall”, “We want Mabatlane Municipality”, “We want water” and “Away with pig farm”, were displayed on placards carried by the protestors during the protest. According to the protestors, #GladysMustFall was a clear message sent to the municipality that Ward 1 Councillor Gladys Mojela must be recalled. The protestors also demanded that a pig farm in the area be relocated to another location where it will not put the health of local residents at risk. The marchers sang struggle songs in front of the municipal premises, waiting for the Modimolle Local Municipality officials and Mayor Kgaretja Lekalakala. The residents were eventually told by the convenors that the Mayor and her
entourage will not be travelling to Mabatlane as they were committed to other work related matters. “The reason why we are here today is that we applied for a march, but then unfortunately we were unable to hand over the memorandum to our mayor. We will be applying for another march. Among other things we wanted to submit a petition that rejects a pig farm which is located next to the R33 towards Lephalale”, MCCC Convener Simon Motsomane said. Motsomane said they are also encountering a water crisis, which the municipality has failed to resolve. According to Motsomane, the MCCC is not a political movement, but accommodates all individuals even if they are affiliated to certain political parties. He said people must not be confused by political emblems, but rather focus on achieving their main goal which is proper service delivery. Andries “Marumo” Moima said their march was postponed on more than one occasion, due to the unavailability of the mayor. Moima told The Beat that they decided to march on 20 November, after all the affected parties agreed on that particular date. Modimolle Local Municipality spokesperson Patrick Shika told The Beat on Monday, 23 November, that the municipality was only aware of the previous march which had been postponed by the protestors. Shika said they were not invited to a section 4 meeting, where the recent march was approved. The municipal spokesperson said the mayor would have been available if she was made aware that there was a protest in Mabatlane.

Motau to serve Elderly lady 1 year, 6 months attacked at farm house TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s Frans ‘Bomba’ Motau was sentenced to eighteen months in jail after being found guilty of possession of drugs and violating his parole. Motau appeared in court on Monday, 16 November for a bail application, and was immediately sentenced to serve the remainder of his sentence. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla told The BEAT that this was a clear message that drugs are not going to be tolerated in the area, and that anyone found using drugs would be strongly prosecuted. Motau was arrested on 24 September after a tip was received by the police, and he was found in possession of an undisclosed amount of drugs. On the same day as Motau’s sentencing, Dahir Abfikarim Isxaap, who was arrested on 13 November in possession of khat (a drug popular in large parts of North Africa) with a street value of R2 800, had his case postponed to 30 November for formal bail application. Isxaap remains in custody.
Lizzy Bapela Warrant Officer Willem Nel of the Modimolle Police is investigating a farm attack case following an incident that happened at a farm in Driefontein on Tuesday, 24 November. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay said that Anina Verwey (74) was alone at home when two unknown men entered the house and stabbed her in the right shoulder, demanding that she give them money. Officer Findlay also said that her husband was working in the field at the time of the attack. Warrant Officer Findlay said that the complainant managed to escape and lock herself in her bedroom. There was another phone in the room, which Verwey used to call for help. Warrant Officer Findlay said that the suspects fled the scene with R60 cash and two cell phones. He said that Verwey rushed to a doctor and was given medical assistance. She was discharged shortly afterward.

Mzamane Ringane Non-profit organisation Waterberg Traditional Health Practitioners Forum hosted a conference at the Peter Nchabeleng Community Hall on Saturday, 14 November. Traditional health practitioners from various parts of the Waterberg arrived in Modimolle for this event, which served to emphasize on the importance of member registration and preserving the traditional way of healing. Coordinator Lesiba Alfred Mashabela said they were concerned that traditional practitioners were slowly losing their identity, as they are now adopting the modern way of doing things. He said all traditional practitioners have to register and adhere to all the regulations of the current government before they can start practising. Mashabela said that before traditional practitioners can give a muti concoction to patients, they have to drink it first and guarantee the patients that it is safe to consume. He encouraged patients to enquire about the practitioner’s registration details before they consult, so that if something goes wrong, they know where to submit their
grievances. Mashabela said another aim of hosting this event was to award certificates to all registered practitioners who attended. He said this forum will serve to address all the challenges that practitioners may encounter. Waterberg Traditional Health Practitioners Forum chairperson Annah Moatshe said that this was only the beginning, and further stated that they still have a long way to go. Moatshe said they were concerned by traditional practitioners who are not willing to come forward and register so that they can be recognized. She said those who work without proper registration are tarnishing the image of traditional practitioners. “We are calling on all traditional practitioners who are not registered to come forward and register, so that they can serve the community authentically. The message also applies to all Thwasa trainees. We want them to also register so that they can be able to meet the regulations once they start practising”, she said. Traditional dancers from as far as Zebediela entertained the audience at this event. Moatshe also highlighted that it is important for young people to participate in traditional activities and to embrace their identity.

More than 150 rhinos killed in South Africa this year. Photo for Illustration only Lizzy Bapela Honorary Ranger for the South African National Parks (SANParks) Wayne Bolton is off to an adventure of life time. He will be cycling to the entrance of each national park in the country to raise funds in support of the anti-poaching campaign, and Marakele National Park in Thabazimbi will be one of the venues that Bolton will be visiting during the campaign. The Honorary Rangers are a volunteer organisation of ordinary people who live out their passion for conservation by tirelessly serving national parks on a volunteer basis. The One Land Love It Expedition will contribute much needed anti-poaching equipment to the men and women on the ground - rangers who risk their lives to protect the wildlife. The expedition starts on Saturday, 28 November at the Kruger National Park’s Pafuri Gate and will then proceed to two other national parks in Limpopo Province namely Mapungubwe National Park and
World Heritage Site on Sunday, 29 November and Marakele National Park on Thursday, 3 December. Bolton will be cycling unsupported although will have a team in attendance at set points along the route for assistance with the logistical aspects of the expedition. He will then proceed to the Eastern Free State, then off to the rest of the national parks with his ultimate destination to be reached in February 2016. SANParks’ Northern Region spokesperson Divhani Maremba said that when Bolton arrives at each gate, various conservation stakeholders including the parks’ management will meet him and sign a scroll in support of the anti-poaching campaign. He added that the scroll, as the name suggests, will represent unity and common objective to make the world a better place by protecting and managing what we have. Maremba further said that the One Land Love It Expedition will cover approximately 6000km in approximately 78 days. A slogan attached to the Expedition is “Joint Custody”…this is a call to action!

Regaugetswe Crèche won the Drama category and was crowned overall winner of the day. Regaugetswe Crèche Principal Leah Ngobeni was over the moon, following a good show by her institution. “I am delighted that our crèche has been selected as an overall winner. I would like to thank all the parents and everyone for their support”, she said. Ngobeni also encouraged other crèches and committees to work hard and ensure that the young children at preschool level are fully prepared before they go to school. Olga Manamela, who was part of the organising committee, said that the objective of the event was to showcase the talent at pre-school level. She also assured parents that their children are in capable hands of trained practitioners.
