Woman murdered
at Bela-Bela TK Mashaba and Lizzy Bapela
The Bela-Bela area came to a standstill as a crowd made up of concerned residents, passers-by and neighbours flocked to the scene where a 32-year-old man had allegedly killed his girlfriend. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday, night 22 April, and was discovered the following morning. Bela-Bela Detectives’ Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said the suspect allegedly stabbed the deceased several times with a sharp object and slit her throat, killing her instantaneously. He added that according to police records, the deceased had a protection order against the suspect, though the reason for the murder is still unknown to them. A source told The BEAT that the two were allegedly contravening the rules of the protection order as they were still seeing each other and publicly so. The source added that the couple would often fight and it was known that the deceased was seeing another man. “At the time of the incident, the suspect found the deceased with her lover and caused a huge scene, smashing the lover’s car windscreen and left with the deceased,” said the source. It is believed that the deceased’s lover fled immediately after his car was damaged and the suspect took his girlfriend to his home, where he is believed to have killed her. The incident happened on the street in front of the yard and the body was moved into the yard afterwards. The police could not confirm the rumours and maintained that the case was still under investigation. They also emphasized that the identities of the involved parties would be revealed once the case has been heard in court, also updating the progress of the case. Phetla said a bloodstained jacket and

knife were found at the scene and have been handed in for forensics to take DNA tests. He added that the suspect handed himself over to the police following the incident. Phetla further said police records show no information about the couple having children together. The suspect appeared before the Bela-Bela magistrate’s court on Tuesday, 25 April, on a charge of murder. As people came out en masse to gawk, a traffic jam formed on the township’s main road, with law enforcement having to
direct road users to alternative roads. The congestion went on for several hours as everyone wanted to see for themselves what transpired. One by-stander expressed her emotions to The BEAT regarding what happened, saying she was still shocked and concerned that Bela-Bela is faced with horrible incidents nowadays. She added that it is often reported that a person is gruesomely killed somewhere and this proves that one’s life can be taken or lost in a split second, driving a person to be
scared for their life. “Domestic violence is widespread in our area nowadays. You would ask yourself if it is even still worth being in a relationship. We all start happily in love but you would never know what the future holds or what goes on between two people in love while behind closed doors. BelaBela, especially Mandela Village (currently called Extension 5) needs heartfelt prayers from committed individuals and organizations,” said another concerned resident at the scene.

Retired police sought Andries van der Heyde The police have put out a call for retired police officers in the Bela-Bela area to become involved with crime-prevention activities in the area.
The BEAT’s sister paper The Post received a statement from the police on Wednesday, 19 April, in which they invite officers who have retired to become involved once more. Constable Maria Maswanganye, police spokesperson at Bela-Bela, said former

officers who were active in the Dwaalboom, Northam, Rust de Winter, Bela-Bela, Pienaarsrivier, Rooiberg, and Thabazimbi areas are invited to contribute their skills and knowledge on a volunteer basis to the fight against crime. “The idea is to create a forum of retired officers who could act as a sort of neighbourhood watch. People who were once in the police force and would still like to contribute in the fight against crime may
visit the police station to discuss the matter.” Maswanganye said the police are planning to set up the forum by the end of June, and volunteers will be able to give up their names at the police station then. For enquiries, interested parties can contact Maswanganye at 083 945 9010, or Warrant Officer Sello Mangana at 083 731 8892.
Alleged domestic violence results hit Mandela Village again Lizzy Bapela The results of another alleged domestic violence incident left the people of BelaBela talking again, as a couple’s alleged heated argument ended in tears. A woman from Bela-Bela’s Extension 5 (formerly called Mandela Village) is expected to
appear before the local magistrate’s court this week in connection with a case of attempted murder. The suspect’s arrest and court appearance are a sequel to an incident that happened in the early hours of Saturday, 22 April. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla of the Bela-Bela police detectives told The BEAT that the suspect stabbed her
husband with a sharp object after the couple allegedly argued. He added that the police were alerted by the victim’s next of kin who could not be named. The victim was rushed to the local hospital in an ambulance after sustaining serious injuries. Phetla further said the police could not reveal the cause of the incident but the
couple is alleged to have a history of domestic violence. He also said the police could not question the victim when the case was reported as he was under medication and in severe pain. “It does not seem like the suspect tried to flee the crime scene as she was found still there and arrested immediately after the police were alerted,” said Phetla.

The police in Bela-Bela are investigating a case of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition after two suspects were caught in possession of the items. The police said the incident happened on Sunday, 23 April near Sun Valley shopping complex. The police received a tip-off about two suspicious looking young men who were allegedly walking around with the pistol and alerted the police, who responded swiftly and caught the suspects red handed. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said the suspects are aged between 21 and 28 and their identity would be revealed once they have appeared before the local magistrate’s court, which was scheduled for Monday, 24 April. Phetla further said a man was charged
with failure to safeguard his firearm following the suspects’ arrest. He added that the man is the father of one of the suspects but was not in the area when the arrests occurred. The man was charged as soon as he returned on Monday, 24 April. He spent the night in a police holding cell and appeared in court on Tuesday, 25 April. Phetla said his case is being heard separately from the other two suspects and he will be summoned to testify in their case when the suspects also appear in court. “We urge people to always ensure that their firearms are in their possession to avoid being charged with negligence. The weapon should always be kept locked up in a safe place if not in the owner’s possession because if left in a public space or where other people can easily reach it, the owner is then declared negligence and is liable to face the law,” said Phetla.

A man in his late 20s was caught attempting to break into a house in Bela-Bela’s Extension 8 on Sunday, 23 April. According to the police, the son of the owner of the affected house walked into the suspect while he was busy tampering with the door of their home, allegedly aiming to gain entry. Police said the witness then rushed out to call his father who was in the area. They added that the suspect was cornered and captured before the police were alerted. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla from the Bela-Bela Police said the suspect was arrested and charged with attempted housebreaking and appeared in court on Monday, 24 April. He added that during investigations, the police learned that the suspect was also wanted in a separate case that took place in Mampatile Section recently. He also said in the previous case, the suspect allegedly stole groceries, which he was not in possession of when he was arrested. Phetla further said the police are still investigating the whereabouts of the stolen items. He added that the suspect is now facing two similar charges and both the cases were set to be heard on the same day in court.
Unavailable docket leaves trial postponed Justin Steyn The trial against Home Affairs official, John Baloyi (32), has been postponed. Baloyi faces charges of corruption after he demanded a R3 000 bribe from a foreign national in January.
According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke, Baloyi was arrested after he allegedly confiscated a passport which belonged to a foreign national during a joint operation between the South African Police Service, the South African Revenue Service, and the Department of Home Affairs. Maluleke alleged that Baloyi demanded a
bribe of R3 000 from the victim, allegedly from India, for the return of the passport. Baloyi made his first court appearance on Wednesday, 1 March, at the Modimolle magistrate’s court where his bail application of R2 000 was granted. He was ordered to reappear in court on Wednesday 8, March, but the matter was
postponed two days later to Friday, 10 March. Baloyi was then ordered to stand trial on Tuesday, 4 April, at the Modimolle Regional court. However, his case was postponed yet again to Tuesday, 30 May as a copy of his docket was not available at court.

Streetlight globes unused for over a year Justin Steyn Streetlight globes said to be worth over R5000 have been stored at a Bela-Bela resident’s house instead of being used by the municipality as intended. This was according to the former chairperson of AfriForum’s Bela-Bela branch Johan Mills. Mills raised the issue during a rural safety meeting that took place on Tuesday, 10 April. According to Mills the globes were bought with membership fees from AfriForum and were part of an initiative to repair faulty streetlights. “We were involved in a project that was arranged by AfriForum to better the streets of the town as there have been a lot of damaged streetlights. The organization wanted to donate these globes to the municipality and they were never collected. They have since been in storage with Hennie Horak, a resident in town,” Mills said at the meeting. In a telephonic interview, Horak said the globes are currently at a guesthouse which he sold. Horak said he has asked the new owners to keep the globes until further notice. “It has been over a year and I am still stuck with these globes and I have asked assistance from AfriForum and the municipality to take these globes back,” Horak said. The current chairperson of AfriForum in Bela-Bela, Janes Boshoff, said the organization intends to retrieve the globes.
He added that the civil rights organization still intends to utilize these globes and would even undertake to have members of the community assist in installing these globes. “As soon as we have the globes, we would like to assist the community and ensure these globes are fitted to streetlamps. We would just need permission from the municipality to do this,” Boshoff said. The chairperson of the Bela-Bela Crime Support group, Elri Arlow, said they have noticed many streets that require new globes or that the lamps need repair. She added that the insufficient amount of lighting in some areas have made it difficult to conduct patrols. “We have been battling with the issue of insufficient or broken streetlights for a while. This has made it difficult to locate suspects that have fled a crime scene or to even locate residential houses that need assistance,” Arlow said. The Bela-Bela municipality’s Head of Technical Services, Risimati Ntekele, said he had no knowledge that AfriForum had these globes for use and said added that the municipality would utilize them, provided they meet the requirements for the globes to be used. “I have not been informed that these globes have been ready to be used, I know that AfriForum took to assisting in repairing our roads last year but I am unaware that they purchased streetlights to be used. Nevertheless we would like to use these globes provided they match with what the streetlamps require so they can function for longer,” Ntekele said.

Transformer a risk Justin Steyn There is a big concern looming among residents in Kwena Street of Extension Six of the BelaBela township. Danny Sedibana, a resident and community activist told The BEAT that a seemingly overloaded transformer has been giving residents headaches over the past few months due to alleged multiple malfunctions. “We have had many problems with this transformer. For the past two weekends a lot of households have been without electricity because this transformer is in total disarray. It breaks down and I can see that one of its connections has been burning,” he said. Sedibana said he suspects that the transformer had been overloaded with illegal connections. “There are many suspicious connections on this transformer and I suspect that these can be illegal connections that may also be the cause of power outages.” He continued by saying the local municipality should maintain the

transformer as it lose hanging wires may cause injury to children or a passer-by. “Someone can get seriously hurt by this thing as it is a danger to the community, the live wires are hanging loose and could injure or kill anyone, especially children who
play there.” The Head of Technical Services for the Bela-Bela municipality, Risimati Ntekele, said faulty transformers should be reported to his division and any suspected faulty connections should be reported and investigated by the local police.

Phetla says Bosele staff members are expected to identify the recovered lawn mower that is now locked up at the police station’s storage place. Photo: Lizzy Bapela
Lizzy Bapela Light is finally being shed on the progress of cases in connection with burglaries at Bela-Bela’s Bosele Dawn Drop-in Centre as arrests were recently made. Police followed leads after receiving a tip-off and managed to arrest three suspects and confiscated a lawn mower that was stolen during the crimes. The investigations on opened cases and subsequent arrests of the suspects are a sequel to three burglaries that took place at the centre in less than a year. Centre manager Laterla Langa said the suspects leave the premises damaged as they force entry and help themselves to the orphans
and vulnerable children’s groceries and the centre’s resources. She added that they were bothered by the fact that there were no leads or reports on the progress of the cases and that none of the stolen items had been recovered. Bela-Bela Detectives’ Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said the trio were arrested on Friday, 21 April following a two-day operation that took place from Thursday, 20 April to the next day. The suspects were arrested at different areas in the township and were charged with housebreaking and theft. Phetla said one suspect was cornered and arrested in Leseding, one in Zuma View and the third in Donoza Informal Settlement. He added that the person who bought the stolen lawn-mower was also charged with possession of suspected stolen property. All the suspects appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 April. Phetla further said the police would contact and notify the centre as soon as the docket is returned from court following the suspects’ first appearance. He added that during their arrest, the suspects told the police that they consumed most of the groceries that they stole and sold some to several people in the township. He also said that the police visited the alleged buyers and none of them were found at their places of residence, adding that they planned to continue searching for them.

Justin Steyn Three people have died in an accident involving a heavily-loaded cement truck. According to the Waterberg Advanced Paramedics Assistance (APA) group’s spokesman, Andy Gill, the accident happened on the night of Monday, 17 April outside of Bela-Bela and involved a cement truck which rolled after colliding with a Volkswagen Polo that collided with a bakkie. “APA was called to the scene of a major accident on the Thabazimbi Road in Rooiberg. This was one of the worst accidents in the area in a long while. On arrival our paramedics found that a cement truck had rolled after colliding with a car which had collided with a bakkie. The cause of the accident is being investigated and not known to us,” Gill said. He added that three people were declared dead on the scene and that six people sustained minor to serious injuries. “The injured were treated and stabilized on scene by APA and Provincial Ambulance Services. They were then transported to the local hospital.” Constable Klaas Ledwaba of the Rooiberg
Police said the occupants of the Volkswagen died in the crash. He added that police are still investigating the matter and that a case of culpable homicide may be opened. On Wednesday 19, April the APA managed to rescue drivers who were involved in a serious collision near the Klein Kariba resort en route to Modimolle. “Our paramedics were dispatched to an accident on the R101 about three kilometres past Klein Kariba during the early hours of that morning. On arrival we found that two cars had been involved in a head on collision. Both drivers sustained moderate to severe injuries,” Gill said. He said one of the injured drivers had to be freed from the wreckage as they were trapped inside their damaged vehicle. “The driver of one vehicle was trapped inside, Provincial Ambulance and Medical Rescue has to extricate him from the vehicle by using the ‘Jaws of Life’. “The patients were treated and stabilised on scene by APA and Provincial Ambulance. The patients were transported to a local hospital and a hospital in Pretoria,” Gill said.
police, the company reported the incidents on numerous occasions, complaining that most stolen items include truck batteries and diesel and the police started with their investigations. Bela-Bela Detectives’ Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said one suspect was identified from the company’s CCTV cameras through help from informers and he pointed the police out to his two accomplices, who were also arrested as a result. The suspects were all arrested on Friday, 21 April, with two in the old location’s Line 1 and the third one in Zuma View. Phetla further said two batteries were recovered in Leseding and Donoza, and two 20 litre containers of diesel was recovered in Zuma View and the buyers were also charged with possession of suspected stolen property. He added that the rest of the diesel was already used and the buyer could not be charged with possessing stolen property as he did not have it as proof and will instead be summoned to testify against the suspects. Phetla told The BEAT that the names of the suspects and those of the buyers would be revealed once the case has been heard in court and investigations continue.
Mzamane Ringane The community of ward 7 at Modimolle’s Phagameng Township took advantage of the LIM 368 Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultative meeting, to air their grievances and their demand for clean water on Wednesday, 19 April at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium. Councillors and the management team of LIM 368 Municipality led by Mayor Marlene Van Staden have been conducting the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultative meetings and budget presentation for the 2017/18 financial year in all wards of the municipality. Before Van Staden could make her presentation, members of the community made a plea that the issue of water should be the first item on the programme. The mayor allowed community members to ask questions about this pressing issue. The first question that was directed to the mayor sought clarity as to why the local town was not affected by water shortages, compared to the Phagameng township which is currently under strict rationing system as a result of the current challenges. In response to the question, Van Staden said it was not true that the people who live
in town are not affected by the current water challenges. “On the first question about the fact that town has water and the township doesn’t have water, that is unfortunately incorrect,” she said. She said most parts of town are also under the rationing system, especially those in high lying areas. Some residents questioned the cleanliness of the water which is distributed by tankers, expressing concern over the quality of the water. The mayor assured residents that the water which is distributed by tankers from boreholes is tested and healthy to drink, but further cited that they will investigate it further to see if it could be an issue with the trucks. There is a ray of hope for the people of Modimolle, as the LIM 368 Municipality is working towards drilling more boreholes. “We are also going to start pumping from Donkerpoort dam from 1 May. The purification plant is ready and everything else is in place,” she said. Members of the community are encouraged to visit the local library in town or the municipality for documents which contains all the budget presentation information.

Firefighters gear up for the fire season
Waterberg firefighters have joined their colleagues in Polokwane for a training camp to prepare for the 2017 fire season. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Working on Fire’s (WOF) veld and forest firefighters from all bases across the Waterberg District are expected to make a sound return from their camp at the Polokwane Showgrounds, fit and ready to fight all fires this years and ensure lives are saved. The members joined their colleagues from all corners of Limpopo Province for their annual yellow card training camp held in order to prepare for
the 2017 winter fire season. The training camp kicked off on Wednesday, 19 April and will end on Monday, 1 May 2017. A total of 660 firefighters from the province’s five district municipalities will take part in the annual yellow card training camp. The programme’s spokesperson Matema Gwangwa said during the training camp, firefighters are assessed on their level of fitness, where they have to run 2.4 km and do sit ups and push ups within the limited period of time. She added that apart from
Struggle Icon Solomon Mahlangu remembered in style
attending the fire lectures and writing assessments tests, they will also do the practical exercises to implement what they have been taught. “Fitness forms a huge part of our training because the conditions that our firefighters work under is very tough and need a person to be mentally and physically fit. We also take the firefighters through the fire wall where they need to run through a live fire for survival. By so doing this exercise, we teach them the skills of how to escape through the fire without being
Visionary musician has big dreams for Modimolle

Mzamane Ringane Contrary to an ordinary way of remembering struggle heroes through memorial lectures, this year’s Freedom Month was celebrated in a different manner. The event was hosted on Thursday, 20 April. The Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture took the cinema environment to the Phagameng Township in Modimolle when they exhibited a local movie Kalushi, which tells the story of struggle icon Solomon Mahlangu in a moving way. The mayor of LIM 368 Municipality Marlene Van Staden urged young people to learn from Solomon Mahlangu, who was hailed as a role model for the young people. Van Staden reminded the young people who were in attendance to bear in mind that they have a big role to play in shaping the future of this country. Department of Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Onicca Moloi said this initiative serves to revive the bioscope culture in rural areas around Limpopo, since most of these places are far from cinemas. She said this will not be a once-off programme. “We have spoken with the mayor and councillors to say we are starting this initiative, but it is not going to be ours alone as the Department. We are depending on you as the municipality to continue with this programme,” she said. Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu was a South African operative of the African National Congress (ANC) militant wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He was convicted of murder and hanged in 1979.
It is believed that before he was hanged, Solomon Mahlangu sent a message of hope to the South Africans. He reportedly said “Tell my people that I love them and that they must continue the fight, my blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom, Aluta continua.” Writer and director of a Modimolle produced film Retribution- Settling Of Score, Sox Masingi said he was impressed at how Mandla Dube’s directed film featured local actors to tell this South African story. “I’m impressed at how they used South African actors for a South African story. The language used there is a language spoken on a daily basis by black people in rural areas or townships. Overall the film’s sound, picture, music and characters were awesome,” he said. Masingi said as a young person the film gave him more information about the life of Solomon Mahlangu. “I had my own imagination of this hero while there was more to the story. The fruits that Solomon spoke about before being hanged are now enjoyed by each and every one in south Africa, black, white, Indian or coloured,” Masingi told The BEAT. The young filmmaker said the showcasing of the film came at the right time as he was busy shooting a short film titled Freedom Fighters. Masingi commended MEC Onicca Moloi for a good initiative, and indicated that he intends to make follow ups to see if the department together with local municipality would be able to set aside a budget to revive the bioscope culture in the townships.
burned, in case they are trapped. The terrain that our firefighters work in is very tough and one has to be through the real fire in order to get them used to the heat,” she said. Gwangwa further said after this camp all firefighters will be ready to be deployed to any fire anywhere in the province once they pass their yellow card training. She added that so far they are happy and proud of the performance of the firefighters and are hoping for a 100% pass rate from all of them.
Modimolle-based musician Boss Dee real name Andries Mabidikama. Photo: Mzamane Ringane
Mzamane Ringane Modimolle-based musician Boss Dee real name Andries Mabidikama wants to see aspiring artists in Modimolle coming together, and building a brand which would be recognised countrywide. Boss Dee was born and raised in BelaBela but then subsequently moved to Modimolle. The Kwaito and R&B artist has recently released two videos from his songs ‘It’s my life’ and ‘Sthandwa Sami (My Love)’. This local musician says he chose to release his videos on YouTube, so that he can reach the music lovers all over the world.
It is normal for every single artist to seek success for themselves, but for Boss Dee it is a different story as he is willing to climb the ladder of success with other local artists. “There is a lot of talent in Modimolle, but unfortunately it is not given enough exposure. The lack of exposure can easily kill the morale of any artist,” he told The BEAT. Boss Dee says he was inspired by the Kwaito group Chiskop. The group was founded by the late Kwaito legend Mandoza. The Modimolle artist told The BEAT that he wants to team up with other local artists to establish a music production company which would be owned by the community, instead of an entity that would benefit an individual. “While the aim is to expose local talent, it is also important to note that we need to create sustainable jobs for the locals,” he said. He said he is also willing to compose songs for artists who cannot compose but have great voices. He concluded by saying that Modimolle has the ability to produce good quality music, which can take the industry by storm. Artists who are interested in becoming part of this development or seeking clarity can contact Andries Mabidikama on 082 539 8685.

Bush pig hunter’s low-key court appearance Mzamane Ringane Stefan Hepburn, who is accused of shooting and killing farmworker Jan Railo during a hunting incident in Tuinplaas, made a lowkey court appearance on Thursday, 20 April at Modimolle. Only a small number of people were in the courtroom, with members of the mainstream media and political parties conspicuous by their absence. When the suspect appeared in court for a bail hearing in February, members of the ANC and EFF protested outside the Modimolle Magistrate court opposing his application. The case had also attracted the mainstream press. Hepburn was granted a R15 000 bail on 24 February. On Thursday, 20 April the Modimolle Magistrate court postponed the matter to 29 June pending further investigation. During his bail application Hepburn had admitted to shooting and killing farmworker Jan Railo while he was hunting on a farm in Tuinplaas. The court heard that the suspect had been invited by the farm owner to shoot bush pigs and other animals which were damaging crops. It is alleged that Hepburn shot Railo after

The magistrate indicated at the time that the state did not have a strong case against Hepburn.

Mayor reaches out Nurse Masalesa receiving donations from LIM368 mayor Marlene van Staden.
Zani Hiepner The Vaalwater Clinic has apparently not been very well supported by the Department of Health over the last couple of years. The clinic have started relying on local donations and help to get them through the tough months. LIM368 Mayor Marlene van Staden visited the clinic on Friday, 21 April, and
Lizzy Bapela Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in Waterberg said they intend to ensure that learners are ready to learn and ready to attend classes. COSAS Regional Secretary Joel Mabula said this is realized through Back-to-School campaigns that the organization have embarked on in schools across the district. He confirmed that all their branches that managed to conduct the campaigns have already reported their visits to his office. He added that BelaBela’s begun on Thursday, 20 April, with Modimolle’s on Wednesday, 19 and Mogalakwena on Monday, 24. Lephalale’s was conducted on the same day of the schools reopening. Mabula added that their key areas of focus include seeing that the culture of teaching and learning begins from the first day of every semester and that textbooks and other learning materials are being delivered. The collective also checks the neatness of the school environment including the bathrooms and whether the grass has been cut. Some schools in Bela-Bela were recently seen receiving help from a local NGO in cleaning out their bushy fields and school yards. COSAS is also checking the attendance of learners and teachers, the school nutrition programme and if there are any unresolved extra ordinary cases. The collective also addresses school assemblies. “During the process, we will also sit and discuss what we will do after the back to school campaign.
Branches must report the state of their schools and submit reports to the regional executive committee, which they will consolidate with the district office of the Department of Basic Education,” said Mabula. Meanwhile, the organisation commended the ANC Waterberg Regional Deputy Chairperson and Mayor of Lephalale, Councillor Jack Maeko for adopting three schools in the rural areas and making sure that the mayoral bursary scheme is available to assist learners from disadvantages family backgrounds.

donated baby products and clothing that will undoubtedly come in extremely handy this winter. The clinic sees approximately 6 500 patients every month, and are battling to live up to their expectations as funding for maintenance and staff have been limited, said Annemarie Van Zyl, clinic manager. The windows need glass, nurses need training, and maintenance needs to be done. Doctors working at the clinic do not have any lights in their consulting rooms and the municipal water needs to be re-connected, she said. “Any donations and help would be greatly appreciated,” said Van Zyl.

Lechaba, who also plays for Limpopo’s provincial team, Baobab, played a crucial role during their games on Saturday, 22 April against the Mpumalanga Sunbirds for the Brutal Fruit Netball League. Lechaba helped her team to a 42-31 victory, and the match was televised on Super Sport. Lechaba, a Bela-Bela local, said she was delighted to have made it to the starting line-up, and says she is hoping for more game time in the coming season. “I am always training hard with my teammates and that boosts my performance,” she said. Diesel n Dust Koketso Kgabo said he was overwhelmed by her performance against the Sunbirds. “Seeing her performance makes me so proud,” he said. “It means that I am coaching her and the team well.” Lechaba and two other Diesel n Dust team members, Dakalo Chikalo and Kamogelo Motrsamailewere, were all selected for the provincial team.
Modimolle’s Addicted to Life athletics club is popularising a healthy lifestyle among the locals, while at the same time affording the athletes an opportunity to compete at the highest level of running competitions. Last weekend a total of nine athletes participated in two separate marathons namely the annual Slow-Mag Marathon which took place on Sunday, April 26in Benoni and the Loskop Marathon in Mpumalanga. The Modimolle runners took part in the ultramarathon (50km). These marathons also served as a Comrades Marathon qualifier. Lebogang Shovote who participated in the Slow-Mag Marathon said that remaining disciplined at training keeps her going. “I programmed my mind to always complete races on time. For me running is not a hobby, but a life-changing activity,” she said. Shovote rated the marathon as balanced and challenging, citing that it was an enjoyable experience. Athlete Jane Lechelele said taking part in the Loskop Marathon helped her prepare better for the Comrades Marathon, since it has a lot of hills.
“It was very interesting and adventurous. It was my first ultra-marathon (50km). There were many people in front of me and also behind me while I was running, compared to previous races where I found myself feeling like I am far behind. It is a sign that I was competitive during this 50km marathon,” she said. Lechelele will coincidentally celebrate her 40th birthday and participate in the Comrades Marathon in June this year. The proud coach of this athletics club, Ezekiel Moatshe was impressed about the performance of his team members. “When you are busy brewing something, it takes time. Comrades Marathon is difficult if you are not fully prepared. So I would like to commend our members for being persistent,” he said. Moatshe said they have about 14 athletes who will be participating in the Comrades Marathon this year. “We are confident that all of them will complete the race, because we have been training very hard,” Moatshe told The BEAT. This Modimolle based athletics club is continuing to grow, with both young and old members of the community showing interest in subscribing to a healthy lifestyle.
