Lizzy Bapela Heavyweights from the ANC in Limpopo and the national parliament graced BelaBela and Mookgophong for their two-day lekgotla meetings recently. The ANC Party Caucus in the Limpopo Legislature hosted the events, with the Bela-Bela one held at the Forever Resorts from Monday, 17 August to Tuesday, 18 August, while Mookgophong’s was on Thursday, 20 August to Friday, 21 August. The ANC Party Caucus spokesperson Phuti Lekganyane said that the Caucus Lekgotla was held with the intention of strengthening the ANC’s oversight machinery in the legislature. He added that it also considered ways of maximising constituency work as a build-up to the 2016 Local Government Elections. Lekganyane further said that the ANC’s Members of the Provincial Legislature attended the event to renew their commitment to serve the people of Limpopo. The attendees agreed upon certain resolutions during the lekgotla which include that the rules of the legislature
should be tighten up to combat acts of unruly behaviour as recently demonstrated during House Sittings. They also said that the ANC Study Groups should take the lead in ensuring that government departments are held accountable for delivering on the ANC’s 2014 Elections Manifesto. Lekganyane indicated that it is incumbent upon the Caucus of the ANC in the Provincial Legislature to ensure that the Executive is held accountable. “The lekgotla reaffirmed that constituency work remains central to community activism and constituency offices are an extension of the ANC within communities; and should be used optimally to create an audience between the ANC Structures and communities. Also, that the ANC, as a leader of society should ensure that people take an interest in the law-making processes, through robust public participation programmes. The lekgotla further resolved that the legislature as a law-making sector should assist municipalities in the province to formulate by-laws, which will enable them to govern their constituencies better,” said Lekganyane.
Working on Fire welcomes firefighters back from Canada Lizzy Bapela Working on Fire South Africa welcomed back the country’s firefighting heroes who returned home after successfully helping Canada with their wildfires. The first group of the 48 South African fire fighters originating from different provinces in the country received high praise from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) for their high work ethic while they were part of the international wildland fire fighting teams and fighting multiple fires in Canada during the months of July and August. They landed at the OR Tambo International Airport on the morning of Friday, 21 August - Air France flight AF990. “The 24 fire fighters were part of the 48 crew members who are made up of participants from the South African Working on Fire programme and have been in Canada since 21 July as part of a resource sharing arrangement between Canadian firefighting agencies and South Africa,” said the programme’s spokesperson in Limpopo Matema Gwangwa. “Following their first two weeks in Canada, CIFFC released a positive Crew Performance Report which lauded the
South Africans for their physical fitness, productivity, health and safety and mopping up operations. When they arrived in Canada we knew already that the South African training standards and qualifications were verified against the Canadian, USA, Mexico, Australian and New Zealand systems and our training was way up there, being compatible with international standards,” said Gwangwa. WoF National Spokesperson Linton van Rensburg said that their upbeat and always happy South African crews with their song and dance were well received in Canada and have even appeared in the local and national media as well as on the Canadian Broadcast Corporation. He also said that they have set positive examples to the local and international crews on how to build strong morale and teamwork. “Our crews are excited to be returning back home and once they have spent some time with their families they will be re-joining their respective Working on Fire teams throughout the country. All of them have expressed their joy at having been able to assist Canada with their wildfires and have described their journey as having changed their perspectives on live in general but they have also learned a lot whilst having been over there,” Van Rensburg said.
Three arrested for business robbery TK Mashaba Three suspects who had allegedly been involved in a business robbery at a shop belonging to an Ethiopian citizen have been arrested. The police received a tip on Tuesday, 18 August, at around midnight, regarding the whereabouts of the suspects. They are alleged to have robbed the shop earlier that same night. The victim, who according to the police recognized all three of his attackers, said that three men pushed him into the shop
and stole cigarettes, airtime, cash and a cell phone while holding him at gunpoint. One of the suspects was also alleged to have held a knife on him. The perpetrators fled, and the three men were later arrested in connection with the crime. Business owners are advised by the SAPS not to keep large amounts of money in their stores, avoid staying open past 20:00, and report suspicious people, vehicles and activity to the police. The three men are expected to appear in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 1 September.

Marlene Vermaak Overflowing bins and skips a common sight in the town and a landfill/re-cycling depot which is inoperative — that is the sad story of Vaalwater. “The Modimolle Municipality apparently buries its head in the piles of rubbish and ignores all pleas, requests or demands for some action. Its own town, Modimolle, is clean and you even see that at the end of each day the street traders clean up and there is very little litter to be seen. Why not the poor relative Vaalwater?” asked Robin Taylor from the Waterberg Nature Conservancy. “The sterling efforts of Yvette Muldoon’s Dream Vaalwater Team, that included Retha van der Merwe and Anne Scotting, have been thwarted and overwhelmed by the Modimolle Municipality’s total lack of support. There are other initiatives which are attempting to beautify and keep the town clean, but where is the municipality?” Taylor told The Post. “This is a serious matter. The piles of rubbish are not just unsightly and a turn off for tourists but a

very grave health hazard. It is a common sight to see children playing amongst the garbage no doubt along with the rats and other diseasecarrying vermin,” Taylor said. “There are other matters too, the terrible condition of the town’s roads, the plethora of signs at the entrance and through town, unkempt verges and yes, litter everywhere — except where some private concerns have beautified and keep their areas clean and tidy,” Waterberg Nature Conservancy members said “The matter has been sorted out,” said Edwin Mogoane from the Modimolle Municipality in an email. “We had a week from 7 14 August without a truck for refuse collection. The truck was repaired and the team started working on Saturday, 15 August, to solve the problem.” When a reporter from The BEAT went to check up on the condition of the town on Monday 24 August, Leseding and Vaalwater were both in an even worse state than before. Attempts to contact Nozi Molteno of the Environmental Management team at the Waterberg District Municipality were met with polite referrals to various parties in the Modimolle Municipality, Mogoane included.
Pieter Aucamp (44), a car guard of Bela-Bela, drowned at the old Bela-Bela dam on Monday, 24 August. On the photo, the forensics department is moving his body.
Andries van der Heyde What was intended to be a jolly occasion for two friends took a tragic turn when a man from Bela-Bela, Pieter Aucamp (43) allegedly drowned on Monday, 24 August, at the old Bela-Bela dam. His brother, Jan Aucamp, spoke to The BEAT’s sister paper The Post at the scene. He said that he had spoken to his brother earlier the same day, but had no inkling of the tragedy that would occur later in the day. Aucamp was seen at Shoprite in Bela-Bela earlier in the day where he was allegedly drinking with some friends. His life-long best friend, James Behrens, phoned Aucamp earlier in the day to ask if Aucamp would like to join him at the dam. They set out to the dam, where they spent a pleasant day. Two other men joined them
during the course of the morning. Behrens said that at some point he threw a plastic bottle into the dam and dared Aucamp to fetch it. At that point the bottle was roughly seven metres from the edge of the water. Aucamp accepted the challenge and dove into the water. “He even held his hand in the air just before he got the bottle,” said Behrens. “When he turned over I thought he was making a joke. When I figured out that something was wrong, I dove in with clothes and all and fetched him.” The two men who had joined them immediately went to the police station to summon help, but by that time Aucamp was already dead. Behrens said that he tried his best to resuscitate his friend, but it was no use. The forensics department moved Aucamp to the local morgue.

Concerned stakeholders address learners on harmful religious practices Lizzy Bapela Concerned representatives of various government departments and private sectors addressed learners from Bela-Bela and surrounding areas on harmful religious practices and the Children’s Act during a recent event. Justice Shabangu of the Department of Justice said that the event was meant to create awareness of harmful religious practices in schools and legislation relating to the protection of children. The Department conducted the event in partnership with the local SAPS and the departments of Social Development, Judiciary and the National Prosecuting Authority. These departments visited various schools to address and advise the
learners as build-up to the main event. The addresses mainly focused on such things as children’s justice, maintenance, domestic violence, and protection from harassment and sexual violence. “The Department of Justice as a custodian of legislation affecting children embarked on the school visits, teaching the learners about the acts, and used the event as a platform to elaborate more on the topics. The event was also intended to allow our Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster units to emphasize the prevention of harm. The discussion and Question and Answer session between the learners and the stakeholders were aimed at measuring the learners’ understanding of the topics,” said Shabangu. All the attending learners were given red Tshirts with the message of the day to spread awareness.

Justin Steyn Non-profit organization Light of Africa is set on developing sports in Bela-Bela/ According to the organization’s project manager Josias Ramalekana, they are trying to develop various sporting activities within the town. This, he says, is part of Light of Africa’s drug prevention plan. “We are trying to increase sporting activities in Bela-Bela so that young people have alternatives to illegal activities such as drug abuse,” he said. Light of Africa’s first successful endeavor in the project is the establishment of eight
netball teams. Ramalekana said that they are looking to add more sports such as soccer to the project. The organization is also looking at ways to improve the town’s sports fields. “Many of the sports fields are dilapidated and ruined and we are going to reopen and upgrade these facilities in the next few months,” he said. According to Ramalekana the response form the community’s sports council has been positive, and they are excited to tackle the project head-on. “We hope we will be able to establish more teams for different sports in Bela-Bela and that they will be able to play in different national games.”

PHOTO of the WEEK
Take a moment, make a goal In less than a week springtime will be officially here and, in a short time, the final examinations for Matric will begin. These exams will mark the end of the scholastic road for many students, while others continue to study after graduation, going on to university or various other forms of higher education. It is the time, and the season, to make a fresh start, to begin things anew. Just as the flowers and trees burst into life as the weather turns warmer, we can bring ourselves to life, granting ourselves new vigor and energy for the challenges we face. Spring Day is like the poor man’s New Years. While many do not celebrate it at all, others use the opportunity to say to themselves “Now is the time for change!” You don’t have to wait for New Year’s to make resolutions, although some think it is a good idea to start the new year with a clear set of goals. As a matter of fact, you don’t have to wait for any special day at all. Each day can be your New Year’s; each day can be the day that you decide that ‘today, my life will change for the better.’ Take a moment on Spring Day and think about a goal you want to achieve. It doesn’t have to be big – it can be something as simple as stopping smoking, or finishing a project you’ve been working on for months. Or it can be to do really well in the upcoming Matric examinations, if you are in school. Make it something that can be achieved in the next few months if you like — that gives you the chance to look back on New Year’s and judge how you did in your goals. Or make it something that will take a lifetime to complete. The important thing is that the only person who will be judging your success or failure in this goal is you, yourself. Nobody else is making your choice, nobody else is watching to see what you do. The choice is yours — make it count.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
May 2015
Malesela Musana, a Bela-Bela resident, writes: It is most strange that in our spotless democracy we are haunted by zombies from the politics of the dead homelands, evil creatures who, after failing their communities as councillors and mayors, exercise monkey tricks to soil elections so that they still hols their positions against the choice of the community. To supply healthy, clean water to our ward is apparently too much hay for the municipality’s fork. Our water is clean but not pure and not healthy, but the council says that it is good enough for us. When I cook, I have to boil the water, leave it to cool, filter it and boil it again and still, white, gravellike substances remain in the boiled water. Boiling the water twice at least saves me from swallowing the substances, but it increases my electricity consumption. Those who do not do this, on the other hand, run the risk of becoming sick. On top of this, we are very far from clinics and hospitals. The mobile clinic that we have to rely on is not very reliable. The municipality pressures us to pay for this troublesome water regardless of our never-ending requests to the municipality to consult and involve us in constructive talks about the issue. Instead of letting us participate in this matter as it affects our lives, the municipality has unilaterally decided to regard us as trivial and forces us to pay for the unsafe drinking water that is all we have access to. The white substances I collect from my drinking water are always available in my house for any eye that wishes to see. My township, Masakhane, is an inseparable part of a liberated South Africa and our constituency forms part of SANCO, the governing body of the nation. Our municipality should be advised that when SANCO sneezes the whole of South Africa, even the Parliament, catches cold. From the branch to the national levels it takes SANCO just a wink to steal the show. SANCO are the people who enthroned the government, and have the power to dethrone it.

Dagbreek Primary wins Tournament
Arsenal furious after court arbitration favours Happy Hearts “If that’s how SAFA is going to play it I am leaving SAB!”
Dagbreek Primary School won the Build-it tournament. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Modimolle’s Dagbreek Primary School football team quenched their thirst for victory after winning the annual Build-it Soccer Tournament on Saturday, 15 August. The tournament is held annually by Modimolle Build-It, with local primary schools competing for the trophy, soccer kit, and assorted goodies. Educator and team manager Memeru Molebalwa said that their final match against Modimolle Primary School was a tough one, as they had lost to the team twice in the past two years. “We were a bit nervous when we realized that we will be playing against Modimolle Primary School in the finals. The team has always been troublesome and they snatched away first prize in the final match for the past two years,” said Molebalwa. Molebalwa said that the young players showed commitment, which was why they managed to win the tournament. She was delighted that the school has managed to win the third Build-It Tournament. Team coach Frans Rabalao said that they had had enough practice matches ahead of the tournament to ensure that the team is
fully prepared for the competition. Dagbreek Primary school won the tournament 5-4 on penalties, after a 0-all draw in regulation time. Rabalao said that as part of their preparations, they split up their team into four squads and selected their finest players from there. The team focused their training on target shooting during their preparations for the tournament, a move that helped them to convert most of their penalties during the tournament. He said they always give full attention to young players who show potential, by nurturing their skills and developing them into quality players. Deputy Principal Mmasello Mahapa said the Dagbreek Primary School staff members are supportive towards each other, and that enables them to prosper both in class and on the field. “We do not only focus on class exercises, but we also give attention to sporting activities. If the kids are physically fit, they would also perform well in class. We are working hard as teachers and the learners are also cooperating, that is why we managed to win this tournament”, said Mahapa. Mahapa thanked Modimolle Build-it for continuing to support sports development in terms of soccer at schools level.

Arsenal players were in a fine mood after their victory over Yster United. Sadly, the Mabatlane-based team will not be proceeding to the playoffs despite their victory. Photo: TK Mashaba Mashaba TKTK Mashaba Mabatlane star soccer team M.Mammoet Arsenal is furious after receiving the news that they had lost their case against Happy Hearts in arbitration. The drama started several months ago when Happy Hearts refused to play a game against Arsenal, citing a lack of lines and corner markings as their reason. Their decision not to play put Arsenal and Qualitho on equal points, although Qualitho had more goals. Two weeks ago Happy Hearts failed to stop a game between Yster United, the Stream B champions, and Arsenal, when

the sheriff of the court arrived five minutes before the end of the match. Arsenal won the game 2-1 and were hoping to proceed to the provincial level, but it now appears that Qualitho will be playing Yster in a new final game, as Qualitho were declared the champions of Stream A. Arsenal’s coach Andries Seputla was fuming when The BEAT spoke to him on Tuesday, 25 August. “How can they tell us that we are not going through after we beat Yster United? If that’s how SAFA is going to play it then I will be leaving SAB!” he said. He added that this was the second time his team has been “robbed”, as he put it, of reaching the provincial level.
