TK Mashaba Bela-Bela resident Simon Mabasa tried to file a case against the former owner of an RDP house at Bela-Bela’s Extension 8 after the sister of the former owner allegedly smashed the windows of the house in an attempt to force Mabasa and his family to leave. The incident occurred on Saturday, 23 April, in the morning. Mabasa bought the house on Stand Number 8741 from Johanna Maunatlala.

Maunatlala is alleged to have sold the house a second time, for a larger amount, and told Mabasa to leave. She offered to pay him back the money he had paid for the house, but he allegedly refused. Maunatlala’s sister Moloko allegedly arrived at the house early on 23 April. “She told me that we must leave the house, because it now belonged to the new buyer,” he said. “I told her that I didn’t want to leave the house as I had already purchased it, but she smashed all the windows and came inside and threw out our furniture to make way for the new buyer.”

The former owner’s sister was taken in for questioning, but the police eventually refused to charge her. Photo: TK Mashaba Mabasa said that he did not want to fight, so he phoned the municipality and the police. During the arrest, Moloko Maunatlala allegedly told the police that she had smashed the windows because Mabasa has already been repaid the money for the house by her sister. The police refused to open a case. They told Mabasa that the issue was a municipal one, as the municipality was the proper authority to deal with housing disputes. The municipality was not available for comment on the matter.

Dira Moatshe and Jan Kebareng Kanapi have opened a case of assault against their former employer Lebogang Monageng, chairperson of the EFF in the Waterberg. The two formerly worked as drivers for Monageng. It is alleged that on Sunday, 24 April, the pair tracked Monageng down in a local shop and asked him for money that he apparently owes them. The money is apparently their salaries for the past three months. According to Moatshe, Monageng told them to “voetsek.” “Things began to go sour after we told him that we needed the money that he owes us for our work as per the agreement, and he told us that we wouldn’t get paid and that we can go to hell,” Moatshe said.
