Trial-awaiting prisoners involved in sexual assault scandal in cells Lizzy Bapela A trial-awaiting prisoner appeared before the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 20 August, in connection with an incident of sexual assault. Police spokesperson Constable Glen Manamela said that the suspect, 34-year old Andries Mokone, was accused of sexually assaulting his cellmate. She said that the complainant was sitting with other cellmates when the accused allegedly forced him to perform oral sex on him. He added that the accused slapped him in the face when he refused to obey. Constable Manamela said that the complainant was moved to another

cell to ensure his safety. Mokone appeared in court as a result of the incident and his case was remanded for later this week for a formal bail application. Mokone was awaiting trial for housebreaking when he was detained, while the complainant was facing a charge of theft. Both incidents took place in Bela Bela and both parties are residents. The complainant is recovering in another cell with different inmates, with the suspect having been moved to Pretoria. He is expected to return to Bela Bela only during court appearances. The suspect was reported to have threatened the complainant’s life.

TK Mashaba The village residents of Raphuti outside Rooiberg next to Leeupoort are complaining of negligence from the Thabazimbi municipality. The place has a long history. The residents used to live in what is now called Leeupoort Resort and were moved across the road during the apartheid era and have since been removed to a remote area without any services. To their surprise, the Thabazimbi municipal manager has agreed to build 100 RDP houses on land that is allegedly a 0 zone on the map. Lucky Gobuamang, a member of the

Ward 4 Committee, said that the municipality has been sending them from pillar to post regarding services for months. “We would like to know how they built houses on it without consulting the people who have been there for more than ten years.” Gobuamang alleges that residents have been sidelined by the municipality. The 100 RDP houses that have been built in the area have allegedly gone to people from other areas, while the potential local beneficiaries go without. “The people in the new houses have no title deeds and are not paying any water services as the houses have been built in a zero are zone,” he said. Lucky said that this issue has been taken to the Provincial Department of Housing, which sent them back to the Waterberg for investigation. “All we need is the municipality to do things accordingly and see to it that those who have been living in the area for years are taken care of.” Maria Seshiwane, an elderly wheelchair-bound women, who has been staying in the area for more than 30 years, said that the municipality has neglected them and alleges that the houses are allocated through nepotism. “I registered for RDP but when the houses were opened for settlement my name was not on the list,” she said. Thabazimbi municipal spokesperson Joshue Motsomane referred reporters to COGHSTA, who could not be reached for comment.

Leaders showed enjoyment through song and dance during the women’s breakfast. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Female staff at the Modimolle Local Municipality were urged to be good to each other instead of plotting against each other, so that they could achieve more in life. These were the words of Bethuel Maja of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) during a breakfast meeting for female members of staff, which was held at the OR Tambo Town Hall on Thursday, 21 August. The local mayor, Kgaretja Lekalakala, organized the event in order to allow the staff to interact with each other and spend social time together. Maja warned the women to stop gossiping and judging one another, and to stand strong and help each other grow. “Work together towards getting ahead in life and do not think of sleeping your way to the top, but get there on the virtues of your own competencies and capabilities,” she said. “All you need to do is to study hard to gain qualifications and skills, believe in yourself and go out there to get the job you want in life. Jealousy and a bad attitude will get you nowhere.” Municipal Chief Whip Grace Mashitisho said that statistics indicated that more women than men came out to vote in the last national elections, demonstrating that they want to help with the building of a better society. “Let us not keep looking back at the times when things were tough, but remember look forward with hope instead,” she said. Representing the municipality’s

management, Adolphine Phala gave a brief background of the origin of Women’s Day and Women’s Month, encouraging the attending women to implement the strengths and fearlessness of those women into their lives today. Phala said that the struggle of women in the last century bore fruit in the lives of today’s women, who frequently occupy high positions in large companies, government departments and politics. She encouraged women to continue mobilizing communities to continue prioritizing the fight against the abuse of women and children. In her keynote address, the Waterberg District Executive Mayor, Tlotlanang Mogotlane, encouraged women to band together and create or obtain business opportunities, which will benefit them as collectives and individually. Mogotlane added that Waterberg continues to take the lead in the rate of HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths, an issue which is deeply disturbing to society. She also commended the Health Minister, Doctor Aaron Motsoaledi, for introducing the three-inone ARV tablet to infected people to replace the mountain of tablets they had to take in the past. “Our region is the gateway from Gauteng to many places in the north, which exposes young women from disadvantaged backgrounds to the temptations of prostitution.” The attendees adopted the advice and motivations from the speakers, pledging their commitment to doing good deeds and presenting a united front, and the event was closed with a song and dance.

Lizzy Bapela Women from various denominations in Bela Bela gathered at the local community hall for a prayer meeting in opposition to drug and substance abuse, a social ill that poses a threat to the lives of the youth in the area. The prayer meeting, organized by the Bela Bela Local Municipality under the leadership of Mayor Lucas Nhlapo, took place on Friday 22 August with stakeholder departments and community organizations taking part. These included social workers, the local Ministers’ Fraternal, and COPFADA (Concerned Parents Fighting Against Drug Abuse). In her speech Nelly Zikhali, a member of COPFADA and a mother affected by drug abuse, said that the reshuffling of leaders within the municipality benefitted their organization, as they are now receiving positive responses and support from the current leadership. “We have fought a lot as an

organization regarding drug abuse and we need to get the Department of Justice to play a role in locking away the dealers who ruin our society. We had a meeting recently with Chief Magistrate Moraka Rameetse and he told us that alleged dealers are often released because of a lack of concrete evidence,” she said. “We also sat down with the police and heard their side of the story. As a result, we are now more aware that this issue needs everybody’s cooperation.” She read a list of the names of those known to their organization to have died from nyaope and a moment of silence was observed for the victims of the drug. Municipal speaker and the day’s Program Director, Councillor Spando Maluleka, said that prayer is an important tool for fighting evil within society, and encouraged attendees to pray from their hearts so that drug abuse may be a thing of the past. Photo of the week You are not prepared

It’s a funny thing, death. We think that we can prepare for it. We try to. We remind ourselves that time is short, shorter for some of us than for others. We try to prepare ourselves with words like ‘terminal’ and ‘cancer’ but it never really works. Because in the end, when you get that phone call or that email and you hear that someone you have loved is dead, it hits you like a ton of bricks every time. You’re never really prepared for the transition between there and notthere. It’s even stranger how, in the days after someone’s death, we have a tendency to want to talk to them more than before. Suddenly there are a million things that you realize that you wanted to say to them, but there’s no-one to say them to anymore. Some people think that’s where religion comes from. It allows us to believe that there is still someone to talk to. In these modern times, of course, there’s always the Facebook wall, which allows us to pretend for a little while that the person we have lost is still around in some form. Just watch the messages crawl up the wall of a recently deceased person. Tens, sometimes hundreds of people, sharing their loss, their stories. It’s heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Heartbreaking because why couldn’t we have done that while they were still alive? Would it have been so hard to send them a message saying how much you care? Because no matter that it makes you feel better now, it could have made them feel better while they were still around. And the thing is that death is not a polite houseguest. He doesn’t always announce his coming with a diagnosis or a doctor. Sometimes you wake up one morning and there’s a message in your inbox that contains the words “car accident.” And once he’s there, he’s there for good. They used to say “never go to bed angry.” Sometimes the mood strikes, and you mentally add “because you can’t be sure that you’ll wake up again.” You can never know when someone you love (or yourself) is going to die. None of us are told how much time we have left. Don’t put yourself in the position of pouring your unsaid words out to a gravestone, or a ghost, or a Facebook wall. Say the things that you would like to say. Say them now, and make sure that they are understood. You can’t ever be prepared for death. You can make it a little bit easier though, no matter which side of the equation you’re on.

Letter to the editor Hope succumbed to persona Klaas Mabunda When what seems incorrect is corrected by absolute disregard to correctness, consistency then becomes something shameful and unfortunate to any realization. Young people have in recent days and months turned to instruments that builds instability, leaving the reality of their natural expectations slowing to a speed below the pace ever engaged by a chameleon, although within their areas of dominance, they are unpredictable to beyond all displays of a chameleon’s capability, even on efforts and initiatives meant to improve and sprinkles niceness in their challenged lives. The “youth pride” lands deterioration, lacking so much loyalty and reliability from within our own shores. These gaining much momentum crediting over ambitiousness. Lately, event processes aimed at bringing young people together, to articulate and develop visionary programs which should coin the youth unity, are disrupted or even worse sabotaged with pride by the same key players, young people themselves. Should it be that perhaps the mentoring pillars are insufficient of mixture, or that the hands that steers the pot are prostate, or rather the schools of thoughts are as thoughtless to the truth that only young people are better positioned to direct the future and level the present. Worrying to all the challenges, is the reality that the misunderstandings are proportioned to having nothing to do with young people themselves, but speaks on an old somebody who has ambitions on something, throwing young people in ends of paralysis. A country with firm economic, social and political relations, is that which young people are not leaders of the entire society, but where young people are brains which the elderly speaks from, having young people assuming stances immune to indoctrination. Gender struggles are seen as acts of weaknesses, because the quantity agitating them are as low as water versus cream concentration, if consciousness is raised by young people amongst ourselves, only we can sharply face the dangers of pride. Young people are challenged with a clarion call to rise, rise to have hopes and wish for good things tattooed with their names, deeper than the marking left by engravers. The unity of courage is the strength of humbleness. “The past cannot be changed, forgotten, edited, or erased. It can only be accepted.” The responsibility of every living under 35 years of age soul, is to acknowledge that only the future is in our control, it is thus our conduct and approach towards the nobility of our lives that will ascertain if we are in control or not. We have different assortment of challenges facing us as a country today, all that is imperative is to have youth identity, as we cannot intervene in international crisis whilst our house is dusty, when young people are at war with their age, envying the responsibilities of generations far above ours.

The Stream A team, Happy Hearts. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba The SAB competition has added a new stream to join the A, B, and C streams. The creation of Stream D was decided on during a meeting on Friday, 22 August. The new stream was created by separating some of the teams from Stream C, which was made up out of teams from Thabazimbi and Lephalale. According to Refiloe Khoza, the SAB League Manager, they had to separate the clubs so that Lephalale and Thabazimbi could have their own streams, as teams were travelling more than 700 kilometers to play away games. “This resolution will help teams who

were struggling with logistics,” said Khoza. She added that they would be checking on all the teams’ readiness before the new season kicks off in September. Stream D is to be made up of 12, while Stream C and A have between 14 and 16, which means that the teams from the relegation zone of the last season are safe. In Stream B, there has to be 16 teams, with three new teams to be promoted to join the stream. Bela Bela’s Happy Hearts team, which were in the relegation zone, are now safe and looking forward to starting afresh in the new season.
