Warned to beware of bogus job offers Mzamane Ringane The Salvation Army ecumenical movement recently warned young people to be cautious of bogus offers, promising them jobs and other needs. This was against the backdrop of Youth Month celebrations across the country, where young people engaged in various activities to celebrate this significant month. Public relations officer for the Salvation Army in the Southern African region, Major Carin Holmes, said young people were mostly vulnerable to false approaches promising them all sorts of things. “In an environment in which jobs are more

and more scarce, the temptation to try out a great sounding prospect is huge. But our message to young people is: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” she said. She added that in their quest to combat human trafficking, the Salvation Army often came across young people who have been lured into slavery and the sex trade, after they were promised employment. Holmes warned that it was difficult once they have been caught up in the web of human trafficking, as it often turned out difficult to break away. She warned victims were often fed with mind and body controlling drugs while in captivity, making them even less likely to try and break out of this vicious cycle of exploitation.

Marietjie Steenkamp A Mookgophong shopowner was shot dead during an attack on Wednesday 20 June inside his store. Ethiopian Adina Sarebo’s store is on the corner of Thabo Mbeki Street and Nelson Mandela Street. Shop assistant, who chose to be identified only as Moosa, was an eyewitness during the attack, when four armed attackers entered the store at around 19:00. One of the attackers pulled a 9mm pistol and fired three shots at close range. The shopowner was shot three times in the

chest. An ambulance and the police were summoned to the scene. Sarebo was taken to a local health clinic where he was declared dead on arrival. According to Moosa, he had never seen the attackers at the shop before. The attackers sped off in a getaway vehicle parked along Thabo Mbeki Street. Mookgophong Community Policing Forum member, Frans Grobler, said he was in the shop at about 18:45 to buy cooldrink. He said he saw a person enter the shop, then retreat, but did not suspect any foul play. Police investigations continue.

Controversy over initiation high season Tlotlanang Mogotlane. Photo: Lizzy Bapela

TK Mashaba At least two youngsters from Bela-Bela are at the centre of ongoing controversy regarding the winter initiation season. In a somewhat dramatic turn of events, initiation school head Lilo Mathe chose to return home a boy who had followed a friend to his traditional school. However, Hoërskool Warmbad learner Titus Machaba (14) was not so lucky. The Grade 8 schoolboy reportedly passed away after being taken to an initiation school. Bela-Bela Detectives Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, confirmed the incident but said the matter was not on the records of the local police. Phetla did mention that all initiation schools are subject to specifications of the law. It appeared the initiation school was not within the jurisdiction of the Bela-Bela policing area. Attempts by The BEAT to pin down the location of the initiation school were not successful, as the family was going through a mourning period. Mathe said he chose to return the other

Lizzy Bapela A total of six ANC leaders from across the Waterberg have made the cut into the provincial executive committee as additional members. The Limpopo province of the ANC

emerged from its 9th provincial conference with Premier Stan Mathabatha re-elected unopposed as party chair. Several disgruntled members had their case dismissed with costs when they attempted to stop the conference last weekend. Health MEC and Waterberg home-girl, Phophi Ramathuba, is on the list, as is the district’s former regional secretary, Tolly Mashamaite. Modimolle’s ANC Youth League activist, Thandi Moraka, is also on the list. Others include Mookgophong’s Sarah Lamola, presently a mayoral committee member in the Waterberg District Council. Tlotlanang Mogotlane from Lephalale, remembered as the former Waterberg District executive mayor and presently member of the provincial legislature, is also on the list, as is Mogalakwena Mayor Andrina Matsimela. Mathabatha spearheads the top five with Vhembe’s Florence Radzilani as his deputy. Sekhukhuni-based Soviet Lekganyane is the provincial secretary, with Mopani’s Basikopo Makamu his deputy. The new treasurer is Danny Msiza.

Police crack down on alleged housebreaking syndicate TK Mashaba The police in Bela-Bela bbelieve they had made a major breakthrough after the arrest of three “most wanted” alleged serial housebreaking and theft suspects, linked to 17 crimes. Bela-Bela SAPS Detectives Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Phetla, said on Monday 25 June, that two other suspects were arrested, as a direct follow-up to the cornering and arrest of Steve Maluleka (20), following a botched residential housebreaking in a suburban area on Wednesday 20 June. Phetla said Maluleka faced 10 charges of housebreaking and theft, and did not rule out the possibility of further charges being added against him and his two accomplices, Kobus Pholoba (27), and Shimane Monare (19). Investigators described in chilling detail how the threesome allegedly targeted households and businesses, hiding their loot in unoccupied RDP houses. Pholoba was arrested on Friday 22 June and Monare on Sunday 24 June. Investigating officer, DetectiveSergeant Frans Sekgobela, said the police first gave chase to Monare, who was found hiding under a bed in a private household. When the police drove Monare away towards the police station in Bela-Bela, they stumbled into Pholoba leasurely walking the sidewalks. He was arrested on the spot. Maluleka was cornered during a botched housebreaking in Bela-Bela on Wednesday 20 June, by members of the

US visitors wow Modimolle chirldren

Both the teams from USA and South Africa posed for a photo after the event. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Members of Centershot Ministries (CsM) from both the United States of America and South Africa arrived in Modimolle on Monday 25 June. The purpose of the visit was part of an outreach programme using the sport of archery to impart life skills to local children. The non-denominational program was carried out in partnership with the local Organisation Hands On (OHO), at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium. Children participated in several activities, with archery being used as the main tool to drive home the message of the day.

“We teach children that if you miss the bull’s eye (the yellow central circle of the archery), you miss the mark, and the only way to get on to the target is to have stability in your life. That stability is through Christ,” said Leon van Huyssteen of Centreshot Ministries. He said he hoped when the entourage left Modimolle, OHO and the local community would take the baton and continue shaping the lives of the youngsters. The Centreshot Ministries president, John Rickenbach, said the abuse of drugs and alcohol remained one of the major challenges among the young people across the globe. “If we have good programmes for children and keep them busy, we can help

and mentor them. One of the most important things to do for children is to love them, believe and support them,” he said. The chairperson of OHO, Ronnie Makgetha, acknowledged the presence and contribution of the visitors. He further extended his heartfelt gratitude to Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden for her participation on the day. “Through the support of the community, we can turn this programme into an ongoing activity that can change the lives of our young people,” Makgetha said. The programme was also extended to neighbouring areas including Mookgophong and Vaalwater.

Municipality receives much needed support June was indeed an interesting month at the Modimolle-Mookgophong local municipality. We are finally receiving the much needed provincial support the municipality has been requesting since 2016. A team from Provincial Treasury came to assist the municipality to draw up a credible budget which council approved on Tuesday 19 June. The approval of the budget goes hand in hand with a financial recovery plan which the municipality will implement over the next 12 months. The municipality must ensure that it recovers all potential revenue sources. Residents can obtain copies of the budget, as well as the new tariff increases, from the municipality’s revenue department. Indigents must also remember to register to qualify for the free basic services of 6 kilolitres of water and 50 kWh of electricity (anything in excess will be billed). Eskom is a great concern and the bulk interruption proposed by them was scheduled to start today. The municipality went to court on Tuesday 26 June to apply to the High Court for an order declaring that creditors cannot proceed with any legal

Bela-Bela byelection bombshell TK Mashaba The Bela-Bela Residents’ Association (BRA) — arguably the fastest growing political formation in the town — has dropped a bombshell, saying the party was not taking part in the forthcoming Ward 9 by-elections. The by-elections are scheduled for Tuesday 17 July. The ANC has still to unveil its candidate, which on paper leaves the race between the Democratic Alliance’s

action against the municipality in accordance with section 152 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). We welcome the provincial executive’s suggestion that any allegations of financial misconduct at our municipality over the past 22 months must be investigated. I offer my full support in this regard. I am also pleased to announce the placement of Mervin Reddy from National Treasury at the municipality, following my request to the Minister of Finance. For the next 23 months Reddy will be driving the Municipal Finance Improvement Programme (MFIP) as special advisor. He will be responsible to assist and contribute towards the financial viability and sustainability of the municipality. Also to improve the capacity of the municipality to implement the MFMA, the municipality’s overall compliance to the MFMA, the

overall financial management performance and championing the capacity building and skills development programme. Reddy has been with National Treasury for over a decade and comes with a wealth of experience in municipal finance management planning. The position of Manager: Planning and Economic Development has become vacant and is currently being advertised. Applications close today (29 June) and all application forms and CV’s must be addressed to the Acting Municipal Manager, Mapule Mokoko, and submitted at records in Modimolle. The municipality will connect 500 houses in Phagameng Extention 13 to the electricity grid today. The residents have all been provided with a pre-paid electricity meter and I will hand out energy saver globes to 150 residents in this area. I would once again like to press on everyone to report any wrongdoings or fraud to me via email at marlene@modimolle.gov.za(.) Follow my mayoral Facebook page on Mayor/Burgemeester Marlene Van Staden for daily updates.

Eddie Arshendorf, and Andreas Mwambo of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Spa Park-based businessman Arschendorf, has been unveiled as the face of the DA to retain the ward vacated by a party councillor earlier in the year. Bela-Bela EFF co-ordinator, Sello Moswoeu, said the EFF’s democratic processes made it possible for Mwambo,

a resident of Vingerkraal, to be elevated to the face of the party ahead of the byelections. He said Mwambo qualified to stand for the EFF as he met requirements such as South African citizenship. Moswoeu said Mwambo was the first choice for potential voters during a party meeting held recently at Spa Park, against a couple of other candidates.

‘We will commence with infrastructural projects’

Let me use this opportunity to greet all the residents and rate payers of the BelaBela local municipality. As winter is upon us, I would like to urge all of us to keep warm and be safe. Do not leave open fires and heaters unattended as this may be disastrous. Let me also remind everyone that the number to call when reporting fire and disaster incidents is tel. 0800 111 660. During this month we had a successful State of the Municipality address, which took place at the multi-purpose centre and members of the public were invited to attend. We have also launched the Local Aids Council with the intention of fostering a multi-sectoral approach in the fight against the pandemic. Structures within the society nominated individuals, who were officially appointed to serve on the Aids Council. We also held an anti-substance workshop in partnership with South African Breweries. The youth were discouraged against the use of illegal substances and underage usage of alcohol. Two more exciting events will be taking place in our municipal area in the coming month. From 12-14 July a variety talent show known as Showville will be in town. It also excites me to announce that the Mayoral Fun Run for 2018 will be held on Saturday 28 July and this time around it will be bigger and better. More details on both events will be communicated soon. July means the beginning of the new financial year and we will immediately embark upon some of the infrastructural projects within our borders. Those projects are: the widening of the Mile Street Bridge, waste water treatment works for both Pienaarsrivier and Masakhane, road paving at extensions 4, 6, 7 and 8 and the building of the Moloto Street Stadium amongst others. The by-elections for Ward 9, which was left vacant after the resignation of Councillor Kobus Van der Merwe, will take place on Tuesday 17 July. We would like to urge those who are eligible, to vote so their voices can be heard. In conclusion I would like to assure everyone that we are working around the clock to ensure that quality services are delivered to all the residents. Mwambo is a South African-born young man, whose parents hail from Namibia. The Waterberg Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced Tuesday 17 July, as the date for the byelections. Ward 9 became vacant after the resignation of DA Councillor Kobus van der Merwe, who has relocated to George in the Western Cape.

Hope for ModimolleMookgophong residents

Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden. Photo: Supplied Mzamane Ringane Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden had hopes that despite the challenges faced by the municipality, there was a glimmer of hope. Van Staden said this following the approval of the 2018/19 budget by the local council. She said the newly-approved budget was aimed at putting the municipality on the road to financial recovery. “With the help of officials from the provincial and national treasury, the municipality presented a budget which will — given the fact that it still reflects a deficit — be coupled with the implementation of a detailed financial recovery plan across all departments,” she

said. According to the mayor, the budget is also aimed at financing and carrying out certain essential service delivery projects in the community. She said that such crucial services included the establishment of a new Modimolle landfill site, the completion of the connection of toilets to the sewer system in Phomolong, and the electrification of 500 houses in ward 6 (mainly in Mandela section). “There is no doubt that the ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality is in a very tough and challenging financial position, however, I believe that if all the role-players within the municipality play their part — we can turn it around,” she said.

Age of miracles and wonder This correspondence serves to welcome you to the amazing wonders of the computer age. Join me in my agony after losing upwards of 500 words of this week’s letter from the editor, after pressing the wrong key on the computer. At my age I am expected to remember and rewrite all that was lost. Life is tough, what can I do, man? I remember writing something to the effect that by the time you read this, dear reader, I would be burning tyre, headed for Centurion in Gauteng. The purpose of the trip is to represent The BEAT at the Forum for Community Journalists (FCJ) awards gala dinner, scheduled for Leriba Hotel and Spa tonight (29 June). You should remember in recent weeks we reported that your favourite read had been shortlisted for the FCJ Excellence Awards. The BEAT is on the shortlist for the best headline-writing category. I am also humbled to say that I have also been shortlisted for the category of best regular column, which I write for The BEAT’s sister publication, Die Pos/The Post. Die Pos/The Post editor, Keina Swart, together with us at your favourite read, are on the shortlist for best headline-writing. Like the recent Caxton Excellence Awards — for which I was named best columnist of the year — the FCJ Excellence Awards are dead serious business. For instance, we at both Waterberg newspapers have been shortlisted alongside some of the finest titles nationwide.

Lizzy Bapela The 2018 winter school camp for Grade 12 learners started at Bela-Bela’s Forever Resorts on Sunday 24 June. Motivational speakers, among them various educators, were lined up to prepare the learners for the camp. Ward councillor Freddy Hlungwane graced the occasion on behalf of Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremia Ngobeni. A delegastion from #100 kids to varsity movement also attended. “When you are well educated, you are qualified to open all the doors or handle all the obstacles thrown at you. I was born and bred in Bela-Bela, and I have now achieved what I never in my life thought I

would,” Hlungwane said. He paid tribute to the town’s former municipal manager, Morris Maluleka, who he said was a shining example of the benefits of a good education. He said Maluleka could apply and succeed at a job anywhere in the country. Maluleka is presently the municipal manager at the Madibeng Local Municipality in the North West town of Brits. “If you want to become a better person tomorrow, start building yourself today. It is not too late even to those who got stuck somewhere in their lives,” Hlungwane said. Education circuit manager, Makoma Thabethe, said he wished the learners the best during the 12-day camp.

Letter from The Editor Johnny Masilela The FCJ is an independent, non-profit, non-racial and voluntary organisation striving to promote and express the interests of all community journalists. Awards co-ordinator, Fanie Groenewald, is on record to say entries had been received from no less than 130 journalists, from upwards of 80 newspapers nationwide, drawn from all the nine provinces. The shortlist for the best headline-writing include the most respected Potchefstroom Herald, Bloemfontein Courant, Vaalweekblad, The Village News, Kalahari Bulletin and Roodepoort Northsider. In our previous article about the awards, I emphasised that the shortlists for both awards is not about me in isolation. Oftentimes whenever I write any narrative, be it a headline or column, I step back and ask the reporters to give their own views. More often than not the younger journalists tear my suggestions to pieces. Having said that, there is a real possibility that some of those shortlisted columns or headlines had been tweaked for the better by Mzamane Ringane, Lizzy Bapela and TK Mashaba. I am sleeping over at an inn (for Biblical ol’ time sake!) in Centurion. The plan is to touch base with family and friends in Pretoria for the better part of the weekend. Hoping to be back in time for the jazz session scheduled for Club Paradise in Bela-Bela late on Sunday.

The BEAT Team Bela-Bela Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) co-ordinator, Sello Moswoeu, has given The BEAT and our sister newspaper, Die Pos/The Post, a clean bill of health against the backdrop of the party’s president, Julius Malema, accusing “some” journalists of being “house n****rs”. A ‘house nigger’ or Uncle Tom, is a derogatory Deep South American reference targeted at a slave of African origin who looked down upon fellow farmworkers, because he or she worked in the master’s house, either as a gardener or domestic helper. Asked if he sensed any “Uncle Tom” attitude from editors and reporters at The BEAT and/ or Die Pos/The Post, Moswoeu said he had no problems at all with the two newspapers. He said as far as he was concerned, both newspapers always published ‘a true reflection’ of what the EFF stood for, in terms of the land question and otherwise. Malema has been condemned all-round after insinuating ‘some’ Indians who he said were allegedly racist. In a follow-up speech in the KwaZulu-Natal capital of Durban earlier in the week, the EFF self-styled Commander-in-Chief lashed out at the Fourth Estate (media). He charged that, among others, ‘some’ black journalists were ‘house niggers’. In his reaction, The BEAT editor, Johnny Masilela, said he had been following the Melma narrative from the time he was president of the militant Congress of South African Students. ‘At the time he spearheaded a protest march in central Johannesburg, with his followers

looting stuff from the most vulnerable such as old ladies selling maize cobs,’ he explained. Masilela said at the time he had given Malema the benefit of the doubt as a school going youngster. “Then later as president of the ANC Youth League, Malema started lashing out at the media, such as the BBC incident which led to his expulsion from the ANC,” Masilela said. ‘My humble advice is that whipping up racial tensions shall not help the EFF electioneering cause in anyway. Political leadership is about the battle of ideas, not insults,’ he added. The BEAT intern-in-residence, Kego Matju (21), said she disagreed with Malema’s statement, “because as a student journalist I believe I am not answerable to any master, but the editor and my senior colleagues.” The BEAT reporter Mzamane Ringane said as a not-so-young person, statements such as attacks on the media would not nudge him into voting for this or other party. ‘For me it is about the clear articulation of policies,’ he said. The BEAT’s Lizzy Bapela said she had always had healthy relations with political parties across the spectrum, “among these the EFF.” Reporter-cum-deejay, TK Mashaba, said politicians across the spectrum should not take themselves too seriously, because on the club circuit young people did not discuss politics, but music. ‘So far they my contemporaries are all satisfied by the kind of coverage The BEAT affords the entertainment circuit,’ he added.

TK Mashaba At least two soccer teams playing informal soccer have shown interest in throwing their lot with the Bela-Bela Local Football Association (LFA). League manager, Andrew Mafafo, said on Tuesday 26 June that one of the twosome was the B team of Opleft FC. The senior team campaigns in the Waterberg SAB Regional League. The other unnamed team, he said, hailed from the informal settlement of Tsakane. Mafafo said the current season of the Bela-Bela LFA was on the final straight, with teams left with one fixture each. Bela-Bela Soccer Academy remained at the top of the standings, almost certainly poised for promotion into the higher ranks. Opleft FC and the unnamed team from Tsakane responded to a clarion call made by Mafafo through the pages of The BEAT in the last edition, calling on

The Warmbaths Methodist Church used the Total Surrender Church to receive several of the residents, pampering them with bread, soup and blankets. Several of the families were offered a

blanket each, totalling 50 of the warm cuddly bedding. The Warmbaths Methodist Church worked with ward councillor Maria “Big Mama” Manamela on the goodwill initiative. Families were identified by Manamela and the ward committee. “It is always very touching and heartwarming to realize you have made a difference in someone’s life and that you made their day,” said Warmbaths Methodist Church elder John Beck.

“On Youth Day, we had a party for the children at Huis Tekna. We gave them beanies to keep them warm. All the older children received presents and goodie bags. We had cake and ice cream and played games with them,” Beck said.
