Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela The Police in Modimolle have issued a warning to members of the local community to be very safety conscious over Easter weekend. Police spokesperson Warrant officer James Findlay said that there is an increase in housebreaking and assaults cases in the area. He added that women should avoid walking alone in the streets after dark or be accompanied if they need to go out. “People should also avoid having cell

Alleged housebreaker shot in the wrist Justin Steyn Justin Steyn An alleged housebreaker has been wounded by the police in Bela-Bela. According to Colonel Abel Phetla, the police were following two men who were allegedly trying to break into houses in town. “Police received a tip-off from the Neighbourhood Watch that someone was trying to break into houses. We responded to a ‘robbery in progress’ call in Tambotie Street and found the two suspects apparently trying to break into a home,” he said.

Phetla said that one of the men was shot in the wrist after he ‘reached for something in his pocket’. “The officers ordered the men to lie down on the ground. One of them reached for something in his pocket and one of our officers shot him in the writs,” said Phetla. He added that the injured suspect was taken to the Bela-Bela Hospital while the other was arrested and taken to the police station. Phetla could not confirm if the injured man was armed and the matter is under investigation.

The police in Bela-Bela say that they are making steady progress in identifying and arresting the four men responsible for the recent murder of Jakes van Deventer. Van Deventer was murdered by four men who had broken into his home in Roodepoort outside Bela-Bela on Tuesday, 17 March. His fiancé, Monique de Sousa, was badly injured when she was attacked by one of the men, but managed to ward him off with a knife she had hidden beneath her pillow. The men fled the scene with several household items such as televisions, cell phones, a laptop, and clothing. Firearms and ammunitions belonging to van Deventer were also stolen. After investigating, police allegedly found a 21-year old man in possession of De Sousa’s Blackberry Torch, which had allegedly been sold to him by one of the suspects. He remains in custody. Phetla said that another man resident in Spa Park has been arrested after he was allegedly found in possession of bullets which were traced to a firearm belonging to Van Deventer. He has yet to be charged. “I am very confident that we will catch these men,” said Phetla. “We have managed to recover most of the victims’ personal possessions, and our intelligence unit are following many leads.”

phones and purses in their hands and they must always make sure that their valuables are not easily seen. The Police will be out in great force this weekend and no tolerance towards crime will be done. Do not drink alcohol and drive,” said Warrant Officer Findlay. Meanwhile, other law enforcement agencies such as the police, Traffic and the Department of Roads and Transport will be on operations over the Easter weekend, ensuring safety on the roads.

After talks with AfriForum, the municipal council of Bela-Bela has agreed to set up a fence around the small graveyard adjacent to their offices. The historical area has been littered by homeless people and some of the gravestones have been vandalized. Photo: Justin Steyn

Land grab becomes an issue Residents eager to own homes met under to police’s escort to discuss the land issue. Photo: Lizzy Bapela

Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Concerned residents of Bela-Bela who said that they are less privileged have occupied land originally intended for the construction of a school near Extension 8, and are now complaining that the municipality may evict them forcibly. The BEAT was called to the scene of a gathering of residents under police escort, where they were addressed by Neo Moloko of the local EFF. The residents made it clear that despite the initial handouts of land coming from a member of the EFF, the majority of them arrived there of their own initiative. The problems started when Sunday Modike of the EFF told The BEAT that they had been alerted that people were occupying swathes of land, allegedly assisted by Lasi Maswanganyi of the EFF. Modike added that when they asked Maswanganyi about the matter, he told them that he had spoken to senior members of the EFF, and was following the orders of the EFF in BelaBela. Two women who wished to remain anonymous told The BEAT that they had heard that there was land going around, and had enquired about the rumours. One of them said that she already had a shack in the settlement going up tere, while the other was also searching for more information so that she could also claim her stand. Maswanganyi told The BEAT that he is working for the people, and cannot wait for indecisive leaders to give the people land. He added that he is pioneering the establishment of the new section, to be called Malema View, while the current

and former mayors are busy fighting each other. “I got served by the sheriffs of the court on Monday and now I have to face a court case regarding the issue. The EFF in Bela-Bela is falling apart now, and those who have already gotten what they wanted from the organization are now reluctant toward the organization. While they are busy with their matters, I will continue to work for the people and serve the organization selflessly because I love it,” he said. Dora Tlhoale (53) said that she had built her shack in the new section because her stand at 8371 had been handed over to someone else, and says that the municipality has been dragging their feet in the matter. She complained that she has been robbed of her stand in Mandela Village despite assurances from the Department of Housing, and is now fearful that it may happen again. She has been staying in a dilapidated show house for over 15 years while waiting for the municipality to sort out the issue. Damaris Munyai (43) has six children and is raising two orphans besides. She says that she is staying with her parents with many other occupants, and the space is not enough, so she decided to squat at the new section because she has been waiting since 2010 for the stand she registered for. “I squeezed myself in with the others and am not prepared to move until the municipality sorts out our problems. They can make a plan to relocate us,” she said. The municipality could not be reached for comment.

More crocs in Bospoort Justin Steyn Justin Steyn Visitors and residents of Inthaba-Indle, a estate in Bela-Bela, were shocked when they spotted two stray crocodiles near its dam area. The manager of the estate, Albert Michau, said that he was contacted by residents who spotted the crocodiles on Saturday, 28 March. “People who live in the estate contacted me and said they saw two large crocodiles while they went on a boat ride that morning. We don’t have any predators on the estate except a few leopards and caracals which came in from outside,” he said. Michau said that he is in talks with crocodile farmers who have offered to catch the animals. This is the second appearance of crocodiles in the area after four crocodiles were caught the previous weekend. Piet Cronjé, a businessman residing in Bospoort, caught the four crocodiles and they were taken to a smallholding owned by George Ragozin, a Russian developer.

Cronjé said that he and Ragozin are planning to establish a crocodile farmer at the smallholding, but are still awaiting permits. Cronjé said that it was very fortunate that the facility was available to prevent any danger to the community. “It is quite fortunate that George has this facility available where we can keep the crocodiles and the community away from one another. Nobody has yet claimed ownership of the crocodiles and we are doing the best we can to keep the community safe,” said Cronjé.

Police events postponed to make way for Minister Chabane’s funeral Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela

The National Police Day event which had been scheduled to take place in BelaBela on Friday, 20 March, has been postponed due to preparations for the memorial services and funeral of Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane and his bodyguards. The police’s initial plan was to host a Police Day event and an imbizo to create awareness of drug abuse and its consequences. Bela-Bela police spokesperson Constable Glen Manamela said that the events have been postponed until further notice because senior management and officials were expected to attend the memorial and funeral events scheduled to take place in the deceased’s home towns. Condolences poured in following the passing of Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane and the two sergeants Lawrence Lentsoane and Lesiba Sekele. The trio passed on following an accident on the N1 north on Sunday, 15 March and various structures across the Limpopo province and Waterberg District are sending out their messages of condolences. Limpopo ANC Provincial Chairperson and Premier Stan Mathabatha led a wreath laying ceremony and the signing of a condolence book at the ANC Limpopo Provincial offices, Frans Mohlala House on Monday, 16 March. Mathabatha conducted the ceremony in memory of the late trio and was followed by other members of the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), government leaders and members of civil society. Following suit was the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA) Limpopo, highlighting that Minister Chabane served in different portfolios in provincial and national governments. “The province and the whole nation lost a hero, liberator, leader and gallant of the struggle. Chabane will be remembered by working diligently towards the attainment of the freedom of South Africa. May their souls rest in peace,” said Chairperson of PRISA Limpopo Doctor Naledzani Rasila. Meanwhile, the Youth Chamber of Commerce and Industries (YCCI) Waterberg Regional Executive Committee also extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved. The chamber’s regional coordinator Tshepiso Boskraal conveyed the messages on behalf of the chamber, remembering the work of the late minister. The ANC Youth League in Limpopo also

The late Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane. Photo supplied joined millions of South Africans in sending messages of condolences to the family, colleagues and comrades of the late minister. He is counted amongst the few icons of the revolution in South Africa and has been instrumental to the country’s transformation. Minister Chabane joined the ANC at the age of 17 and is reported to have remained true to its course while it was not fashionable to do so. He remains one of the exemplary leaders of the ANC, upon whom young people should look for political solace. In Limpopo, the late minister is credited with pioneering the merger of the economic cluster parastatals such as the Limpopo Business Agency (LIBSA), Limpopo Development Agency (LIMDEV) and other government agencies into the now formidable Limpopo Development Agency (LEDA). “He was one of President Jacob Zuma’s dependable members of Cabinet. His death leaves a huge void in the ANC and the SA government,” said the spokesperson for the ANC Youth League Limpopo Provincial Task Team (PTT) Onicca Moloi. “We also send messages of comfort and gratitude to the Sekele and Lentsoane families, who have also lost their beloved ones while in line of duty, when they met their untimely deaths,” Moloi concluded.

Waterberg plans for environmental education The dedicated group of people who are willing to assist with Environmental Education in the Waterberg Region. Photo: Marlene Vermaak

Marlene Vermaak Marlene Vermaak During the latter part of 2014 Clive Walker, well known conservationist, writer, artist and resident of Vaalwater, approached the Waterberg Biosphere and Save the Waterberg Rhino with the suggestion that in terms of Environmental Education they should seek to collectively look at what each organization was undertaking and seek ways to collectively co-operate and assist each other rather than operate in isolation. Walker has indicated that he will be prepared to steer this initiative in its formative stage and continue through the Waterberg Living Museum thereafter through films, talks and guided tours at the museum. (The Museum is set to re-open in October 2015) Marina Els, educator from Waterberg Academy, offered the school as a venue and the first every meeting of its kind was held on Tuesday, 24 March. “The purpose of the meeting was to share views and chart the way forward to assisting in the conservation of our environment and especially our rhino with your collective support, and to make sure that it is a public participation process,” said Walker. Community members invited to the meeting included people from all spheres of society: Living Museum curators, Waterberg Welfare Society, all schools in the area, Voortrekkers youth organization, Bush Pigs Outdoor Education, Lapalala Wilderness School, Endangered Wildlife Trust, Waterberg Nature Conservancy, church leaders, Department of Environmental Affairs and other relevant stakeholders. Lychelle Swales, for the Save the Waterberg Rhino project, handled most of the administration and Arthur Matodzi, of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, was the meeting facilitator. Swales gave a brief and informative talk about the Save the

Waterberg Rhino project and what they have achieved in the three years since their inception, November 2012. Everyone involved felt that young people from Vaalwater, Leseding and surrounding farms should be first on the priority list. These students should be actively engaged; they should visit game farms, attend workshops, experience what foreign tourists experience and be taught to love nature, animals and the environment as a whole. The Environment as a potential area of employment should also be discussed with these learners and all the local schools will be the immediate target of the chosen committee. “We currently have 41 schools attending camps but nearly no schools from the Vaalwater area. Those are the students we want,” Mashudu Makhokha, head of the Lapalala Wilderness School. “Altogether 37 schools from around South Africa visit Bushpigs all year round. In June and July 2015 we have availability for local schools or youths to attend environmental camps but we are in need of funding for such projects” explained the staff from Bushpigs Outdoor Education facility in Alma. “This is a great opportunity to get all roleplayers to work together, it’s a unique concept and what Vaalwater need is a structured committee to sort out logistics for all environmental education in the area,” said Ken Maud, chairman of the Waterberg Nature Conservancy. “The Waterberg Nature Conservancy is currently supporting a final year Tshwane University of Technology student in Environmental Studies. This young lady is available for talks at schools in the area.” At the end of the meeting a new Environmental Education Committee was established and any inputs in this regard can be directed to Lychelle Swales at the Save the Waterberg Rhino project (media@waterbergrhino.com).

Photo of the week Wha hatt to do if you are in an accident Carnage on South Africa’s roads remain a concern as 1 368 people lost their lives over the 2014/2015 festive season, with 193 fatalities registered for the four-day Easter long weekend alone in 2014. Head-on collisions are cited as the leading cause of death on South Africa’s roads, with around 40% of fatalities being pedestrians. In an effort to make a difference Cartrack joined hands with Fury Motor Group to provide support to NetCare 911’s Rapid Intervention Unit which offers assistance and support over the coming weekend, a time when road accident victims and emergency servces personnel need support most. The Rapid Intervention Unit will be stationed along the N3 route to KwazuluNatal at Van Reenen’s Pass, an accident hot spot, and will attend to any incidents in the vicinity. “An accident scene is normally accompanied by a certain degree of chaos that emergency personnel need to navigate in order to assist accident victims,” said Peter de Dock, Group Risk and Credit Manager and Fury Motor Group. “More often than not, road users who are involved in an accident are frantic and not sure what to do.” According to Neil Visser, Netcare 911’s Regional Operations Manager for Gauteng West, your first priority is to remain calm and ensure that nobody is injured and/ or may need assistance, and assist the injured until help arrives. Once this is done, collect as much information as possible. “Try to get an eyewitness to the incident as this will corroborate your story to your insurer,” says Visser. Netcare 911 recommends exchanging the following details: * Name and surname * ID number * Telephone numbers * Vehicle registration numbers * If the other driver is a professional driver (Taxi, delivery truck or ambulance) they should be in possession of a valid Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP) which can be seen on the driver’s license. If this is not valid, take a photo. Take photos of the following: * The damage to your vehicle. * All the damage to the other vehicle both old and new, as often other parties will try to claim for old damage. * The overall scene. * Your vehicle from the direction you were travelling in, indicating brake or skid marks. * The direction from which the other party was travelling. * License disks of both vehicles. It is always a good idea to have your mobile phone handy, and to have a first-aid kit in your car. In the event of an accident or when you come across an accident, remember to park your vehicle safely, in such a way that you do not obstruct emergency vehicles, with your hazard lights on,” says Visser. “Ensure that you know a

national emergency services number such as 082-911 or 10117 or 112. Try to provide the emergency operations centre with as much information as possible. The agent will normally guide you through the process and will most likely insist on your telephone number in the event that they need to call you back, the scene address and visible landmarks, what is happening at the moment, and the patient’s condition.” If emergency personnel arrive at an accident scene where a patient is unconscious, they will complete treatment and then will most likely look around in the vehicle for identification. “Good sources are cell phones, from where we will either look for numbers stored under ICE (In Case of Emergency), or the last dialled numbers. However, these functions often do not work because phones are locked and we can’t access the information. We also look in the debris in the vehicle for any documents with identification such as business cards, wallets and paperwork. As a last resort, we may trace the vehicle’s registration number through Metro Police or SAPS.” Juan Marais of Cartrack, a leading vehicle tracking and recovery, fleet management and telematics service provider, says that an important aspect which many overlook is the use of medical bracelets. “If you have an autistic child, or if you suffer from epilepsy, or if you are allergic to certain medication, among others, then wearing some form of medical bracelet is vitally important,” says Marais. “Not only will it provide emergency personnel with critical information they need to give you the best possible care in the fastest possible time, but it will speak for you when you are unable to do so.” The possibility of being in an accident is a topic that most people avoid at all costs, and yet it is something that demands consideration. “Being informed and knowing what you need to do to secure the best possible care in a moment of need will not only help emergency personnel on the scene but can ultimately save your life,” concludes Marais.

The Bela-Bela Developmental Committee brings hope TK TK Mashaba Mashaba The Bela-Bela Developmental Committee is a non-profit organization based in Bela-Bela. The organization was founded in November 2014 as a vehicle to fast-track development in Bela-Bela. The development committee is a non-aligned movement which will seek to work with various development partners and development groups from Bela-Bela and elsewhere in the fields of education, infrastructure, and others. It consists of qualified and experienced local professionals. “We aim to collaborate with as many development organizations as possible,” says Tshepo Matjila, the newly appointed Executive Director. “For us, the objective is to become the single-entry point for development partners, like Bela-Bela Municipality, who may be looking to find worthy development organizations to support, like the Bela-Bela Education Advocacy Group (BBEAG), and ‘Dads in the picture’. On the other hand, we want to become the federation of choice for all the development organizations in Bela-Bela,” added Matjila. “Given that there are many pocket organizations in Bela-Bela who are doing varied developmental work, an organization like the committee becomes important integrator in

Metronome lead vocalist opens up in interview TK TK Mashaba Mashaba Bela-Bela’s afro-pop live band lead vocalist, Katlego Mashaba, has been called to Gauteng to finish up his latest project. Mashaba, who started singing at church, said that music has always been in his veins, and that he has a background of family music. “I grew up looking up to my uncle and cousins, who have been in the music scene. At one point I wanted to be a DJ but my uncle told me to focus on my studies,” he said. “I have been lucky to be in a live band, which was known as LRNB before we called it Metronome.”

Mashaba has done a number of cover versions of well-known songs, as well as six original tracks, written and performed by him. “I worked with different producers and Isaac Ravat of Balqfaith Records has been phenomenal in helping me with production. I have great respect for my band members Bobo Mautla, Leon Mautla and Shana Thema, the guys I met at church.” Mashaba has performed at events in Gauteng, Polokwane and around the Waterberg. Their current project is called My Angel, and will be released on radio soon.

Maxoma FC is having a bad season TK TK Mashaba Mashaba While other teams in SAB’s Stream B have gotten a chance to prove themselves, Maxoma FC has been having a terrible season. Maxoma has remained at the bottom of the log with 9 points since the start of the league, with only 2 wins against 10 losses. With few games left it is clear that Maxoma will be facing relegation at the end of the season. The BEAT tried to contact Maesela Koma, the team owner, but he could not

be reached for comment. Yster United is still leading the log with 32 points, just ahead of Mokopane Stone Breakers on 27 points. United beat Vegas 4-0 on Sunday while Mookgophong All Stars lost 3-0 to Ratanang. On Saturday, 28 March, Ratanang lost 2-0 to Stonebreakers while Juventas beat Mosesetjane 1-0. Black Rangers played a 1-all draw against Mokgongong All Stars while simple Yellows lost 2-0 to Vegas, and PJ Stars lost 3-2 to Thaba FC.

Bela-Bela Pirates made history with a 12-0 victory over Home Defenders. Photo: TK Mashaba TKTK Mashaba Mashaba Bela-Bela Pirates made Waterberg SAB history when they smashed Modimolle’s Home Defenders 12-0 on Saturday, 28 March at Ephraim Mogale stadium. According to Jakes Maitsapo, the team’s owner, several of the team’s players were still at work on Saturday when the game was scheduled, and Defenders were forced to play without a full team. “It was a walk in the park for Pirates,” he said. “They know we play good football, but on that day we were helpless.” Maitsapo said that they did not want to

lose with a walkover, but opted to play the game instead. Home Defenders bounced back the next day, however, beating Bazooka 6-3. Pirates continued on excellent form on Sunday, beating Troublemakers 2-1. In other Stream A results Happy Hearts suffered a 6-0 loss against Boys to Men, while NTK Happy Boys beat Total Surrender 5-3 and Modimolle All Stars beat Young Pirates 7-1 on Saturday. On Sunday, 29 March, Diesel n Dust played a goalless draw against M. Mmamoet Arsenal and Modimolle All Stars played a goalless draw against Happy Hearts.

Bela-Bela duo to rre epr esent the na tion a present nation att AFCON TK TK Mashaba Mashaba Don Alberts and Phillip Monwai are awaiting letters from their management in order to know when the next beach soccer camp in the Seychelles will be. The two, who were part of the beach soccer in Durban during the qualifying games for AFCON, will soon be flying to the Seychelles to represent the nation in the AFCON tournament. “Things are opening up for us. We just came home last week and rested a bit, and now we are looking forward to this opportunity,” said Alberts. Alberts said that he received positive support from Bela-Bela residents after the Durban games. “I’m happy with the advice and motivation I have been getting. I have to work hard to stay on top of my game,” he said. Albert said that placement in the

national team is not permanent. Anyone has the opportunity to excel and be selected, and the chances of being replaced are also good. He says he wants to stay positive to help his country. Alberts said that his role model is Benni McCarthy. “He has achieved so much at an early age, and I want to do so while I still can.” Alberts wears the Number 17 jersey, which was McCarthy’s number when he played for Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates. Alberts is worried about the performance of his local soccer team, Total Surrender. “We had a good start at the beginning of the season and it is sad to see us losing six games in a row,” he said. Alberts scored two goals in the team’s match on Saturday against NTK Happy Boys in their SAB League fixtire, and remains the top goal scorer in the league.
