Body found in Kranskop cave

The police’s air unit from Polokwane was called in to remove the body of an unknown man from a cave at Kranskop. The man was found naked, near an ID book and a can of water. Photo supplied

Members of the police’s rescue unit carry the body found in the cave to their vehicles. A post-mortem is expected to determine the cause of death. Photo supplied Ronél van Jaarsveld The body of an unknown man was removed from a cave at Kranskop near Modimolle on Sunday, 29 May, after the police were alerted to the find. The cave is difficult to reach by foot, and the police’s air unit from Polokwane dropped off four members of their rescue

team and a member of the forensic unit on the mountain. The forensic work and photos were, according to Warrant Officer James Findlay, finalized before the body was removed via helicopter. According to Findlay, the body is that of a black man and had already started to decay. The body was found naked, and an ID document and a 20-litre water can was found nearby. The name on the ID

document cannot be released, since it is unclear whether it belongs to the deceased or not, and the relatives of the ID document’s owner have not yet been contacted. “A post-mortem investigation will determine the cause of death,” Findlay said. “If foul play is suspected, a case of murder will be opened.” Findlay said that the cave has many

tunnels, and it appears as though some of them penetrate deep into the hillside. In some areas, the spaces are quite small. Kranskop is known locally as Modimolle Mountain. Modimolle, in Sepedi, means “God has eaten.” There is a legend that anyone who taunts God by climbing to the peak of the mountain, will not return alive — hence “God has eaten.”

TK Mashaba On Saturday, 28 May, around noon, traffic was halted for almost two hours on the N1 near Mookgophong when a six-car accident left three people dead and several injured. According to information received from Warrant Officer George Ledwaba, the accident involved two cars travelling northto-south colliding with four that were travelling south-to-north. The driver of one

of the cars, who is expected to appear before the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court soon, was allegedly attempting to make a U-turn on the freeway. Ledwaba said that it appeared that the driver had not made sure that the turn was safe, and collided with an oncoming vehicle. The other four vehicles then piled into the resulting tangle, and chaos ensued. Cars travelling north had to be diverted while traffic and emergency services officers were clearing the road.

Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela police are looking for the driver of a Toyota Quantam which was involved in a serious accident in the early evening of Saturday, 28 May. Bela-Bela police spokesperson Constable Maria Maswanganye told The BEAT that the accident occurred on the N1 highway next to the Roodekuil Bridge. Maswanganye said that the cause of the accident was a burst tire, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle and causing it to overturn.

The accident left nine people injured and one dead. Some of the injured were treated at the scene, while others were taken to the hospital at Bela-Bela for treatment as they had suffered more serious injuries. Maswanganye said that the driver of the Quantum was not found at the scene, and their whereabouts are unknown. An investigation is underway to find the driver of the car. She said that a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened, and police are investigation. Anyone with information relating to the case may contact Constable Maria Maswanganye at 082 729 0253.

Mzamane Ringane Residents of Extension 11 in Modimolle are sleeping with one eye open as a result of the high rate of electricity cable theft. No less than five households are already experiencing the hardships after their cables were stolen at night. Residents recently came up with plans to alert each other to the possibility that theft was occurring in their neighbourhood. A resolution taken at the recent community gathering was that every household must have a whistle, which will be blown as soon they suspect that something is amiss. Once the whistle is blown, residents will then realize that something is wrong in the neighbourhood and then take necessary steps to deal with the situation. Extension 11 resident Jack Baloyi, who is one of the locals who were hit hard by this crime, said when he realized that there is no electricity in the house, he thought it was a power outage. He told The BEAT that he checked with his neighbours and found out that they also don’t have electricity. “When I woke up and plugged an electric kettle, I realized that there was no electricity and then I thought it was a power outage. I went outside to ask my neighbours and I discovered that they also do not have electricity. We then noticed that the electricity cables have been stolen,” he said. Khoza said he and community members from the surrounding followed the

suspicious footprints that were seen in their yards. He said on two occasions when they followed the foot prints, it looked as though the suspect wore another pair of shoes to make sure that he is not caught. Khoza said the suspect has been tormenting Extension 11 residents for long now, and the same footprints were spotted every time he strikes. He expressed that life was now difficult without electricity, as they need electricity for most of the day to day necessities. Ward committee member of Modimolle Ward 6 Rufus Jan Mahoro said they are having sleepless nights because of this tormentor. “We saw the importance of working together as members of the community, by launching the Know Your Neighbour Campaign. Through that campaign, citizens will guard their neighbourhood to ensure that it remains safe. We also agreed that every household must have a whistle, so that when someone needs help they just blow it and call for assistance,” Mahoro said. Mahoro said they have also agreed as members of the community that they must not take the law into their own hands. Another suggestion was that since there is no street lights at Extension 11, residents were advised to connect lights outside their yards so that criminals do not take advantage of the situation. Mahoro pleaded with members of the community to report any suspicious activities at the local police station.

Budget held hostage for forensic report EFF members and members of the community chanted and sang in the council chambers on Tuesday, 31 May. Photo: TK Mashaba DA councillor Kobus van der Merwe left the council chambers after community members disrupted the meeting. Photo: TK Mashaba Mayor Lucas Nhlapo, Speaker Spando Maluleka and Municipal Manager Morris Maluleka have been told to stop the budget adoption presentation. Photo: TK Mashaba Andries van der Heyde The public participation meeting where the Bela-Bela municipality was to present the budget for final consideration was disrupted

by members of the public on Tuesday, 31 May. A full gallery, which included members of the EFF, Change for Bela-Bela, and the Concerned Residents, had only one thing on their minds — the KPMG report on alleged

irregularities involving Municipal Manager Morris Maluleka. Maluleka was placed on special leave in March awaiting a forensic investigation regarding certain contracts he handled on behalf of the municipality. Maluleka returned to his post at the beginning of May. Certain council members say that although they are told that the report has been completed, the report has, as yet, not been presented to either the council or the executive committee. Kobus van der Merwe, DA council member, said that it is in the public interest to discuss the report. Mayor Lucas Nhlapo said that the report will be discussed after the budget. The Speaker, Spando Maluleka, attempted to continue with the meeting, but the public caused a disruption demanding that the report be presented, to such a degree that the Bela-Bela police had to be called in to restore order. Nhlapo eventually said that the report would be presented, but then said that the report was not available and that it would be presented at a future special meeting, with representatives from KPMG present. It would, according to him, be irresponsible to discuss a report that was not drawn up by the municipality. He asked the community members not to disrupt the meeting further, as it would present a negative image of the municipality if the council were prevented from doing their work. Members of the public then taunted the council members and said that if the report was not presented, they would not allow the

council to discuss the budget. Council members attempted to ignore them and continue with the meeting, but the noise became too intense. Tinus Ras, a DA councillor, then asked that the meeting be postponed under the circumstances. The police quieted the crowd again, but the peace was short-lived. Since the meeting could not proceed, the DA council members left the meeting. Shortly afterwards, members of the public stormed the meeting, which other council members were still attempting to continue, and confronted the council member face-toface and prevented the meeting from continuing. The meeting was then hastily postponed to Friday, 3 June, to discuss the KPMG report as well as the budget. Van der Merwe said that the DA could not have done any better, and that the budget is being held hostage to force the council to discuss the KPMG report at all. NJ van Heerden from Change for Bela-Bela said that the reason for the disruption is that the public is concerned that, if the council is allowed to discuss the budget before the report, the report will be set aside and no answers will be forthcoming, since the council is expected to go into recess soon. EFF member Sello Mosweu said that the Mayor is attempting to play them for fools. “How can they suspend the municipal manager and later bring him back without telling us what the investigation concluded? he demanded. They also insisted that Maluleka could not be present at council meetings, as they regard him as still suspended.

DA welcomes former EFF members in Modimolle EFF’s Waterberg Regional Chairperson Lebogang Monageng is one of the party’s leaders implicated in the allegations of bringing it into disrepute. Photo: Lizzy Bapela

Lizzy Bapela More than 50 members from the EFF’s Ward 11 Branch Executive in Modimolle have found a new home in the DA. The DA in Limpopo welcomed the new members to the party on Friday, 27 May. According to the DA, the branch members have become increasingly disillusioned with the EFF and could no longer associate themselves with a party that, they say “stands for violence and chaos.” “In the DA, we respect that it is each individual’s right to belong to a party that truly represents their values. Our values are Freedom, Fairness, and Opportunities for All. On these values we hope to build a future for our country,” said the party’s provincial leader Jacques

Smalle. “More and more people are uniting behind the DA, as they too believe that the DA is the only political party in South Africa that is growing substantially since 1994. The DA is the only party that will bring positive change that will stop corruption, create jobs and deliver better services in Limpopo.” One of the new members, Martha Mabusela, told The BEAT that they had left because of the provincial leaders Meisie Kennedy and Winnie Mphahlele, as well as the party’s Regional Chairperson Lebogang Monageng. Mabusela said that the leadership is running the party according to their own views, and not according to the constitution. She added that Kennedy, Mphahlele and Monageng, recently held a secret meeting, following the members’ departure to the DA, where Kennedy

allegedly revealed that it is as if Mabusela knew that she was not going to be given a position in the party when she changed parties. “A leader should not use favouritism but aim at ensuring the growth and wide support of the organisation. I wish for the EFF to grow big especially because it belongs to the son of the soil. We analysed and criticized and decided to choose the DA as we have seen visible achievements within the party. I am 65 and served the Department of Education for 41 years. All I need now is to find rest in the party and not fight for positions,” Mabusela said. Attempts to reach the leaders of the EFF for comment in the matter failed dismally. The leaders were attending the party’s list conference at the time of going to press.

DA accuses GoGHSTA MEC of protecting allegedly corrupt Modimolle leaders Lizzy Bapela The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Limpopo, Makoma Makhurupetje, is being accused of protecting allegedly corrupt Modimolle leaders, municipal Chief Whip, Grace Mashitisho and Mayor Kgaretja Lekalakala. The DA in Limpopo accused the MEC of lacking the necessary accountability and responsiveness to effectively ensure that due process is followed for the benefit of the people of Modimolle. The party wrote to the MEC with respect to her alleged blatant disregard of a Modimolle Council resolution taken on 14 January 2016, requesting her to determine the period of Mashitisho’s suspension. “The Chief Whip was found guilty of fraud and corruption by a special committee and was fined R70 000. A case of fraud and corruption was opened with the SAPS and is currently before the local magistrate’s court. The council however did not

take any action against the two officials who approved the requisition and the official in the Mayor’s office who requested such payment who was also implicated in this racket. MEC Makhurupetje was asked, in terms of Clause 14(2) of the “Code of Conduct for Councillors” to suspend Councillor Mashitisho for a period to be determined by her, but to date the MEC has ignored the request. “It is clear that the MEC is protecting these top ranking cadres at the expense of good governance and accountability. The unwillingness to uphold and protect government institutions and hold the powers that be accountable proves that the ANC and its cadres believe they are above the laws and regulations of our country,” said the DA provincial leader and spokesperson Jacques Smalle. The DA expressed their great concern that a councillor that has been found guilty of fraud and corruption by her own council is actively participating and is still in a position of power. Smalle said that it is clear that

Limpopo Premier, Stan Mathabatha, only paid lip-service in his State Of The Province Address in February this year when he stated that the fight against corruption remains high on his government’s agenda. He added that in stark contrast, DA-run municipalities have exhibited a strong track record in responsible government and cracking down on corruption and crime. The DA said in a statement that they will request the Public Services Commission to investigate, monitor and evaluate the administration and personnel practices within the Modimolle Municipality before the amalgamation with Mookgophong to propose measures to ensure effective and efficient performance after 3 August 2016. The resent ANC list conference held in Mokopane saw Lekalakala and Mashitisho being voted to return to leadership after 3 August. CoGHSTA provincial spokesperson Motupa Selomo and Modimolle municipal spokesperson Patrick Shika could not be reached for comment.

Municipality plans to build new substation Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela municipality has placed a public notice of its intent to construct a 132 kilovolt substation along the major power distribution lines in Bela-Bela near the R516, north of the main town. The project is being undertaken by Eskom and NGT Consulting, and is currently awaiting authorisation

from the Department of Environmental Affairs. The Municipality has meanwhile commissioned a basic assessment report which will allow it to identify issues of concern as well as the social and environmental impacts of such a substation. In a telephonic interview with The BEAT the Chairperson of the Waterberg Conservancy Forum, Chris Wagner, said that he does not

foresee any problems with the construction of such a substation but added that he would have to assess the framework proposed before providing an official statement. “We will have to see the response from the people who live in that area if such a project is to be undertaken. I have not seen the basic framework as yet and cannot give an official statement on the matter,” he said

Bela-Bela budget in its final stages Andries van der Heyde The municipal budget of the Bela-Bela municipality for the new financial year is in its final stages and was expected to, in all likeliness be considered for approval by council on Tuesday, 31 May (see page 3 – Budget held hostage for KPMG Report). Three public meetings were held on Thursday, 26 May: at the Warmbad Dienssentrum, the community hall in the BelaBela township as well as at Laerskool Warmbad where people could give their final inputs regarding the budget. Lucas Nhlapo, mayor, was not present at the Dienssentrum or at Laerskool Warmbad, where Morris Maluleka, municipal manager, and other council members presented the budget. The draft budget has seen a few changes since it was approved by council in March. National treasury had recently told council that some of the increases on certain tariffs were too high. A decision was made that most of the tariffs are to be only increased by 6%, as was discussed in the meetings. The inputs given at the meetings included problems with the recent valuation roll. Other issues raised included the illegal squatter camp along the Alma-road in Koppewaai, which has a negative impact on the housing market in the area. AfriForum is currently in the process of obtaining a high court order for the involved respondents to follow through on the first high court order in 2014 to remove the squatters. Another issue was the need for electrical maintenance to be done in the Noodhulp and Roodepoort areas where

countless problems had occurred over the past few months. Risimati Ntekele, head of techincal services, told the attendees that scheduled maintenance is continuing in those areas. Frans Rootman, chairperson of the Bela-Bela Tax Payers Forum (BBTF), told the attendees at Laerskool Warmbad that for the rest of the financial year residents are going to pay for the decisions council is going to make and that they demand value for money. He urged council members present not to rush approval of the budget and to give reasonable answers if council cannot consider the inputs made. According to Rootman’s calculations the increase in water tariffs will lead to schools paying more, which will likely increase school fees. Businesses will also likely pay 38% more if the draft budget is approved. The increases on electricity tariffs were also a concern. Rootman singled out a few other irregularities that included sanitation, property rates, refuse removal, the operational budget and how the municipal income is calculated based on the correct figure of existing households. He urged council members that it was better to conduct regular maintenance on electrical and water infrastructure, instead of increasing tariffs annually. Maluleka said at the end that Rootman’s views are extremely valuable, has substance to it and that every issue he pointed out will be looked at. The municipal council is expected to consider the final budget soon, since council members will be going into recess in the coming days for the upcoming municipal election.

Transport Department talks on criminal record checks Spokesperson for the Department of Roads and Transport in Limpopo Kagiso Mootane. Photo: Lizzy Bapela

Lizzy Bapela The Department of Roads and Transport in Limpopo gave clarity to the drivers regarding the criminal record checks (CRS) before issuing public driving permits (PDP). In accordance with CRS processes and the highest number of criminal records checks, all fingerprints are submitted to the Automated fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to check for criminal records. The National Road Traffic Acts states that a person does not qualify for a PDP if they have criminal record. Departmental provincial spokesperson Kagiso Mootane said that the Department will not be able to issue a person with a

PDP if that particular person has been convicted before. She added that that is why they request applicants to bring results of screened finger print from the SAPS. They work with the Managed Integrity Evaluation (MIE), which is regarded as the largest and most trusted background screening company in South Africa. Mootane highlighted that due to a high number of fingerprints to be verified, the fingerprints are checked electronically and directly against the SAPS’ database. She added that it takes five to six weeks to get the results because is a centralized database. Mootane further advised drivers to go for fingerprints checks at least two months before their permits expire.

Lizzy Bapela A team of 301 members from the South African Working on Fire (WoF) programme flew to Alberta, Canada, to assist the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) with their wildfire suppression efforts. The team, consisting of firefighters and management assembled at the OR Tambo Airport for the trip on the morning of Sunday, 29 May. A total of 48 young male and female firefighters from Limpopo, including Bela-Bela and Modimolle formed part of the deployment. This deployment of firefighters is regarded as the biggest South African deployment ever to assist a foreign country, outside of the army. “Canada is currently experiencing challenging fires in particular in the Province of Alberta. There are a number of priority fires that require human resources, especially the Fort McMurray, Alberta fire, with more than 500 000 hectares already burnt,” said the WoF national spokesperson Linton Rensburg. “CIFFC have sent a formal request for assistance to their international

partners including WoF. This pending international deployment comes at the back of firefighters from WoF who have already been to Canada in 2015 where they assisted the authorities over there with fire suppression and prevention services.” The Canadians chartered a Canadian Airways plane that departed with the South African firefighters. In April, WoF held a National Deployment Bootcamp in Gauteng, where 400 firefighters received training to ensure that they were physically fit and ready for deployment. Rensburg said that they also wanted to elevate the level of training to meet international standards, and in so doing, to raise the level of service they offer during deployments. Instructors from the WOF Training Academy conducted fitness drills and representatives from Canada demonstrated how Canadian water handling equipment works. “As part of a resource sharing arrangement between Canadian firefighting agencies and ourselves, the firefighters will be deployed to Alberta, from where they will be dispatched to assist with the suppression of fires in the

surrounding forested areas. The fire control effort and the supporting strategies are largely for forest fires in both remote areas and on the forest and rural land interface. Our Integrated Fire Management services and products which includes amongst others, fire prevention, fire detection, fire suppression and fire awareness has been lauded as a huge success and it has also been successfully implemented by WoF in Chile and Australia. We are proud of our South African firefighters from our WoF programme and we believe that they will do us proud to provide these essential services to Canada,” Rensburg added. WoF has set the benchmark in providing training to young men and women in becoming professional wildland firefighters and in so doing not only providing them with a work opportunity but also making a contribution in protecting our environment. “We are immensely proud of the fact that the international firefighting community has recognised the skills and expertise within WoF to provide essential integrated fire management services at an international level,” Rensburg concluded.

Vet concerned about increase in cat flu

A veterinarian in Bela-Bela said that he is highly concerned about the rising instances of cat flu among dogs in the town. According to Dr Marius du Toit of the Warmbaths Animal Clinic, his practice is approached almost daily with cases where dogs suffer from cat flu. “I am very concerned about the rising cases of cat flu in our town. We are approached almost daily by someone who has a dog that is suffering from this serious disease. We have had up to eight cases a

week,” he said. Du Toit said that the cases are reported from households inside and out of town and not just in one specific area. “These cases are from everywhere, inside and outside of town, and not just in one area, so people should be on the lookout,” said Du Toit. He warned that antibiotics has no effect on the virus and may even worsen the dog’s condition. Du Toit also said that the virus can be contracted in various ways. “The virus is spread from sick dogs to healthy dogs, by vomit and faeces, through the air, from people via our clothes and hands. The virus can

TK Mashaba Bela-Bela artists are abuzz with the news that a talent scouting event for actors, singers, and songwriters will be held at the Bela-Bela Community Hall on Sunday, 5 June. The event is organized by Floyd Ngwenya and Katlego Nhlapo, founders of the Chabieclip film academy. The auditions will be open for all ages. “You can’t determine talent based on age, so all age groups will be welcome to attend the

auditions,” said Nhlapo. Ngwenya, who has had a career in film as his life-long ambition, said that this is his chance to give back to the community. “This is a way of giving back to the community by giving them a chance to do something and showcase their talents outside the province,” he said. Nhlapo expressed his gratitude toward local organizations and individuals that had helped them with the event, including former Bela-Bela Mayor Hendrietta Ledwaba, who booked the hall, and NJ van Heerden of Change for Bela-Bela, a local non-profit.

ANNOUNCEMENT According to Circular 67 of 2016 from the Limpopo Department of Education, the closing date for 2017 applications is Tuesday, 21 June 2016. Please remember to register your children at school.

survive in the soil for up to five years and dogs can contract the virus in any contaminated park or yard.” Du Toit says that inoculation is the only preventative measure against cat flu and that more than one vaccination should be done. Symptoms are mainly severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. He further explained that the treatment of Cat Flu can be very intensive and expensive. “About 30% of dogs will continue to die despite intensive treatment. It usually takes 7-12 days for a dog to recover from the virus if they are hospitalized. Prevention is better than cure anyway,” he said.

One Thursday morning in 2014 Peter had gone to work as usual — doubting himself, not knowing how he was going to get through the day, anticipating with trepidation that he would need to do more cold canvassing to get through the day. “I was sitting in my office when the phone rang and I nervously picked up the phone. The person on the other side of the phone did not want insurance, but needed assurance of salvation. She also wanted me to pray for her because she was HIV-positive,” he told The Post. After trying to persuade her to find someone close by to pray for her and counsel her, he eventually had no choice but to pray for her as she was very persistent. She was also calling from a place called Boekenhout in Limpopo, which was literally in the middle of the bush, while he was in Johannesburg. After praying for her over the phone, the lady who was bedridden at that stage, was sufficiently healed by God to be able to get up and make herself something to eat. different doctors including a witchdoctor as far as Zimbabwe. But there was no remedy for her. According to her, she had watched a televangelist minister to people on television and people got healed. Out of desperation she decided to write down the numbers which appeared on the screen inviting people to call for prayer. Without realising it, she had written down the wrong number which came through to Peter. Her healing and other significant events after that, led to the establishment of Oasis of Hope Ministries International. “At Oasis of Hope we identified along with spirituality, that education needed to be prioritised in the area that we are ministering in. However this needs to happen right at the beginning stages of children’s education,” said Peter. He realised that while there were many playschools in the area, some are simply dropoff centres and very little early childhood development takes place. Thus he and Desiree started Oasis Kids where along with a safe environment, they also offer educational activities that would stimulate the child. “Even though government has made children’s grants available, many children are still roaming the streets when they should be at a crèche,” he added. During May, they hosted free workshops in which they invited parents and shared with them among other things: the importance of early education for their children and how the activities that they engage in influence the child’s development, etc. Furthermore Peter envisions a multi-purpose centre in which different disciplines could be taught to children and teenagers such as art, dancing, music and drama. “We have the space and would like any volunteers who would want to invest their time and skills to better our children to come and partner with us. Our God is indeed a miracleworking God who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above what we can think of or imagine. Where there is hope, there is life,” Peter said. Mzamane Ringane Women from various churches in Modimolle led by Mayor Kgaretja Lekalakala, gathered in Phagameng to attend Women in Ministry Prayer Day on Wednesday, 25 May. The session was held at the local Apostolic Faith Church (AFC), with members from other churches and NGO’s arriving at this venue to attend the session. Church elder Esther Motshegoa of AFC welcomed all those attended the session, while Councillor Mpho Ledwaba directed the programme of the day. Before the women could be given a platform to speak, Councillor Ledwaba said that the women were allowed to speak their minds and share their opinion or thoughts with the rest of the attendants. Mayor Lekalakala said there was a serious concern of children who are roaming the streets during school hours. The Mayor called on all parents to be vigilant and ensure that their children are attending school at all times. She advised parents to frequently check their children’s progress, by both checking their books and visiting their schools. Mayor also pleaded with the women to support their HIV positive family members, so that the battle against this virus can be triumphed. She said that Modimolle has set a good example by bringing women from different churches and NGO’s under one roof to discuss societal issues. Mayor Lekalakala indicated that other municipalities will hopefully draw inspiration from this initiative, and follow

suit in order to make the world a better place. Rachel Mosehla who spoke on behalf of Dira O Direlwe Drop in-centre, said the centre takes care of orphaned and vulnerable children, among others. She said their duty is not only to feed the children, but to also develop them and ensure that they become better people in the community when they grow up. “We also visit schools and interact with their teachers to check their performances,” Mosehla said. She indicated that as part of the Isibindi programme, the care workers often visit different households to offer assistance where needed. Reverend Mantsaki Paulina Manganye of Anglican Church Modimolle Parish also delivered a message of support to all the women who attended the prayer meeting. Manganye told the audience that all life’s challenges are possible to overcome if they pray. She indicated that parents must at all times nourish their children with the word of God. Church elder Martha Mabolola also emphasized on the issue of giving children a proper upbringing. Mabolola said parents must lead by example if they want their children to become good people in the society. Thabiso Makhubela who is one of the youth church members at AFC, said parents must teach their children to pray. She also pleaded with the women to pray for the world, and reaffirmed that a prayer has the power to change every situation. Reverend Pheladi Makau of the Lutheran Church in Modimolle delivered a sermon of the day.

Mzamane Ringane New York-based award-winning columnist and public speaker Mona Eltahawy delivered a keynote address during the Africa Day celebration event held at Modimolle’s O. R Tambo Hall on Wednesday 25 May. Eltahawy was born in Egypt and has lived in the U.K, Saudi Arabia and Israel. Analyst and freelance writer on gender, political and cultural issues Nomboniso Gasa was also one of the speakers on the day. The Africa Day event organised by the Modimolle International Solidarity Movement (MISM) was officially opened with the AU anthem, followed by the South African national anthem. Various community based structures including the ANC, SACP, YCL, ANCYL, EFF, COSATU, SADTU and Ministers’ Fraternal honoured invitation to this event. Acting Modimolle Mayor for the day Modiehi Kekana welcomed everyone including the dignitaries and members of the public for honouring invitation to the Africa Day event. When delivering the purpose of the day, Seraka Mapeka said the aim of hosting the event was to celebrate Africa Day, which was widely celebrated by all African countries on 25 May. Mapeka said Africa Day serves to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (African Union) in 1963. According to Mapeka, the theme for this year’s Africa Day celebration was ‘Building a better Africa and a better world’. Speaking on behalf MISM, Zunaid Mosam said they were pleased to host an event of

this magnitude, and further indicated that they are intending to organise more events of this nature in the near future. “Comrades and compatriots, it is indeed a great pleasure as the Modimolle International Solidarity Movement to host the Africa Day event in Modimolle, and more so to have in our midst the guest speaker of the calibre of comrade Mona Eltahawy and comrade Nomboniso Gasa,” he said. Mosam said his movement will continue to raise awareness on various issues, by creating awareness programmes and hosting events like the recent one. “This event is one of the many events that we will be hosting in the near future,” Mosam emphasized. Mosam also took the opportunity and thanked Eltahawy and Gasa for gracing the event and sharing their thoughts and wisdom on the North African Uprisings. Elthawy spoke about the Egyptian revolution of 2011, where former Egyptian military and political leader Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down after people staged an 18-day demonstration. She likened the case of Mubarak to the present day challenges faced by women in the society. Eltahawy urged women to stand firm and not to be apologetic about the lifestyle choices they make in life. Gasa on the other hand spoke about cultural issues and activities that undermine the dignity of women. Local residents were also given a chance to ask questions, while others chose to share their comment relating to what they learnt on the day.

Mzamane Ringane Potential filmmakers from the Waterberg region were among several individuals who attended the provincial funding seminar, at Polokwane’s Library Gardens on Tuesday 24 May. National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) hosted the event in conjunction with South African Arts and Culture Youth Forum (SAACYF) and the Limpopo Arts and Culture Youth Forum. The seminar was open to all film and video artists from across the province, regardless of their age or gender. Limpopo’s aspiring filmmakers attended the meeting to be equipped with knowledge relating to applications for funding. Limpopo Film Office CEO Victor

Phiri said the purpose of the seminar was to give local filmmakers a chance to engage with the national film and video foundation, and to be assisted with the process of applying for funds. Phiri said the workshop was not just a session where people will just come and go back home without having gained anything. He said they wanted to ensure that Limpopo artists are also given a chance to make it big in the industry. President of SAACYF Romeo Ramuada started by applauding the recent decision by the SABC to play 90% of local music content on their radio stations. Ramuada indicated this new development means that artists must now produce content, urging locals to work harder. “People are not going to be able to produce content if they don’t have

money. We need money to produce the content, and that is why we have the NFVF here. NFVF is not the only stakeholder that we are going to bring into the province,” Ramuada said. He said they are happy that the NFVF is visiting rural areas, citing that they were recently in Mpumalanga and now in Limpopo. Ramuada encouraged artists to take advantage of such seminars, and make use of the information fruitfully and apply for funds. The scriptwriter of SABC 2’s retro drama Bophelo Ke Semphego Anthony Thobejane was among other dignitaries who addressed the filmmakers. The meeting was wrapped with a question and answer session, where representatives of the NFVF gave clarity and answers.

Mzamane Ringane Mookgophong was a hive of activity on Saturday 28 May, with hundreds of people stopping at this busiest town of the Waterberg ahead of the Nedbank Cup final at Peter Mokaba Stadium. While Orlando Pirates supporters from as far as Rustenburg and Vosloorus arrived in Limpopo for the soccer fest, SuperSport United supporters from Pretoria also filled buses to follow the favourite team to the Polokwane venue. While ordinary members of the community enjoyed the razzle-dazzle in the area, informal traders admitted that their

businesses were making profit on days like these. The taxi industry was among other businesses that certainly benefitted from last weekend’s hype. Peter Mokaba Stadium has a capacity of 41 733 seats, and tickets to this final match were sold out. Informal trader Anna Mashishi, who is known to many locals as Mma Mashishi, said that when the R101 is busier, business is good. “When the road is busy with people going to events such as bigger soccer matches, we get a lot of customers who are stopping to support our businesses,” she said.

He said the team’s promotion from the lower leagues and into the higher PSL should be a motivating factor to other lower league teams. Although this young players has decided to dedicate his time to youngsters, he has not abandoned his own football career. He said he wishes to play in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge and ultimately in the Premiership Soccer League. “Seeing those young players participating in the PSL Reserve League motivates me to work harder,” Selamolela said. Selamolela said being named man of the match twice during the SA Schools League national games in 2012 was also a motivation for him to stay focused.

Modimolle football striker Tshepo Hope Selamolela has decided to transfer his skills, by forming a team of under15 players with the intention of developing them into future stars. The 20-year old goal-scoring machine is known to local football lovers as Kanku. His supporters likened Selamolela to Lubumbashi born midfielder Kanku Mulekelayi, and that’s how he got his nickname. Selamolela currently plays for the Waterberg SAB Regional League team, Modimolle Young Pirates. His team of 18 players named La Masia plays in the Modimolle Junior League, where local under 15 teams compete for the honours. This young coach told The BEAT that he draws a lot of inspiration from his father Lolo Semalolela, who is also passionate about football. “I have been inspired by my father. He is passionate about football. I drew a lot of inspiration from him when he was still running a football team. I thought its best for me to share my skills with these youngsters so that they grow up to become football stars. There is a lot of talent in Modimolle, but unfortunately most of them do not make it due to lack of support. I wish to see more professional footballers emerging from our area,” he said. This young striker said Baroka FC has also proved beyond reasonable doubt that it is possible to succeed through hard work and commitment.

On the issue of Baroka FC’s promotion into the PSL, Mma Mashishi said she feels that its good news for the whole province, including the business community. She said she hopes that weekends will now become busier, giving business a great chance to make good profit. Mma Mashishi who often operates her

business with her daughter, said she has been in this industry for 15 years and she is passionate about it. The sold-out five goal thriller at Peter Mokaba Stadium did not disappoint the crowd, with SuperSport United punishing Orlando Pirates 3-2 at the end of regulation time.
