TK Mashaba On Saturday, 5, and Sunday, 6 March, South Africans across the nation are expected to flock to IEC registration centres to check their registration status ahead of the upcoming local government elections. Mafangambiti Netshivhambe, the Bela-Bela IEC’s project coordinator, told The BEAT on
Monday, 29 February, that they expect a massive turnout to this first registration weekend. “We are expecting a lot of people this weekend,” she said. “We are still urging people to register and to check their residential address.” She said that many citizens may have registered at previous addresses for previous aelections, so now is the time to double-check their official residential addresses. The IEC confessed concern earlier in the
year about youth voter registration numbers, but it would appear that their youth voter campaign was a success as the numbers picked up afterwards. The IEC expects another registration weekend in April. The date will be confirmed later in the year. Those who wish to register are advised to bring their ID documents along for the registration weekend. Those who wish to register may also SMS their ID numbers to 32810, or call toll free to 0800 11 00 for advice.
