Overload tragedy Seven people were injured and one killed in a single-car accident near Kranskop on 2 July. Photo: supplied
Justin Steyn Eight passengers packed into a Toyota Yaris were involved in an accident near Kranskop, killing one and the rest sustaining injuries. Five children were injured in the accident, as well as two adults.
According to the Waterberg Advanced Paramedic Assistance (APA) spokesperson, Andy Gill, the accident took place on Sunday, 2 July, near Kranskop, when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. “APA was called to the scene of an accident on the N1 North about 10 km past Kranskop, in the direction of Polokwane,”
Gill said. “Eight people were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in went out of control and rolled.” Eight people — three adults and five children — were injured in the accident, with one of the adults succumbing to their injuries and being declared dead at the scene. The injured were transported to a hospital
at Modimolle before being transferred to Johannesburg for further treatment. Information received suggest the occupants may have been members of an extended family, on a northbound journey. According to Gill, the cause of the accident remained unknown, but it is suspected that speed may also have contributed.
It’s winter school time for learners of the Waterberg TK Mashaba The winter school initiative kicked off at Bela-Bela with the objective to benefit learners. The initiative started on Monday, 3 July, and will end on Friday, 14 July. Forever Resorts, in partnership with Old Mutual, are the facilitators. Upwards of 115 leaners from various postprimary schools
were taking part, free of charge. Forever Resorts deputy manager, Sam Rammutla, said the initiative was part of the hospitality institution’s social
responsibility programmes. “We are glad to give these learners such an opportunity to improve their subjects,” said Rammutla.
The learners were accommodated at Forever Resorts, while Old Mutual committed to foot the bill for the catering. Winnie Mafora, the winter classes’ project manager, said the resort and the insurance underwriters were a godsend, as it had been difficult to enlist sponsors in the past. Bathopele Secondary School learner Puleng Manganye said he was thrilled by the opportunity to be part of the initiative. Mpho Khumalo from Bela-Bela High School said she was overwhelmed to be part of the initiative, and so said Adjirah Mothibi from Raeleng Secondary School. Kamogelo Dolo of Bela-Bela High School was likewise excited about the opportunity to take part. Some of the learners in attendance. Photo: Kholofelo Monyela.

Illegal immigrants found guilty Justin Steyn

Lizzy Bapela Mystery continues to cloud circumstances around a railway crossing accident from which occupants of a smashed sedan — all women — apparently fled the scene. The smash took place along the railway line bordering the township and BelaBela town in the early hours of Sunday, 11 June.
It was reported that a blue Corsa Lite smashed into the side of a moving train from the direction of township. Eyewitnesses told The BEAT there were three women inside the car, including the driver. The witnesses said shortly after the accident, the three women hastily fled the scene, allegedly carrying away alcohol beverages, leaving the key in the ignition and other belongings.
Adding to the mystery was an assertion by local acting station commissioner, Lieutenant Abel Phetla, who said the police had no record of the accident, although eyewitnesses insist the cops did arrive on the scene. The stationary train blocked the entrance between the town and township, causing a traffic snarl-up on the day, with workers on foot ducking under the carriages to arrive at work in time.
Illegal immigrants who were arrested at the Zwartkloof private game reserve have been found guilty of entering the country without the necessary documentation. The thirteen were reportedly arrested on Thursday 8 June after an investigation had been conducted by the Bela-Bela police and Home affairs. It has been suspected that a series of burglaries had been committed by suspects who may have been foreign nationals. “We acquired the assistance of the local police and security who turned their attention to construction workers who were employed for a project at the reserve. There had been concerns with regards to a number of burglaries, and a joint operation of police and security personnel was set up to investigate,” said Jan van Zyl, a co-owner of the reserve. He explained most of the reported burglaries occurred over weekends, and that of grave concern was that some of the crimes were committed while guests were inside their respective vacation dwellings. “The incidents involved theft of laptops, cellphones, and in one case an unknown man tried to steal a flat screen television set, but the visitor spotted him and he fled the scene,” he added. Lieutenan-Colonel Abel Phetla of the BelaBela police said that the thirteen have remained in custody due to failing to pay a fine of R2 000 each, imposed by the courts. On Thursday, 29 June the immigrants, who were reported to be from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrates Court where they were found guilty of entering the country illegally, and working without the required permits. They were registered as first time offenders and fined R2 000 each or four months’ imprisonment. At the time of going to press it was revealed that the illegals were unable to pay their respective fines.
Manhunt for lion killers TK Mashaba Three lions were found decapitated at Kareefontein, a farm outside Modimolle on Monday, 3 July. The police have launched a manhunt for the suspects. A case of stock theft was being investigated, following the senseless killing of these endangered animals. Police said farm security personnel was on routine patrol, when the guards made the gruesome discovery in the lions’ enclosure.
The animals had apparently been poisoned, and their heads and paws chopped off. The police were summoned immediately and arrived swiftly to investigate. A knife was found at the scene. Early in June two lions were killed at the Emoya wildcat sanctuary in Vaalwater, with their mutilated carcases discovered by patrolling guards. Police have asked anyone with information regarding the latest incident to contact Colonel Alpheus Mokale at 082 565 6524.
Serial intruder re-arrested Justin Steyn A man from Bela-Bela has once again landed in hot water for allegedly burgling residential homes in the area. Seun Maluleke (35) has once again been apprehended for allegedly breaking into a house on Thursday 29 June. According to Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, Maluleke had broken into a house and allegedly stole groceries. “The owner of the house surprised him as he took grocery items, and he immediately fled the scene. He was chased after by the local neighbourhood watch, and eventually apprehended, as he was cornered while scaling the walls of several houses,” Phetla said. Phetla said the location as to where the incident took place may not be revealed as it may hamper investigations into other related crimes. Maluleke appeared before the BelaBela Magistrates’ Court on Monday 3, July where his case postponed to Wednesday, 12 July to allow for bail application.
Maluleka was the first to be suspected of minor theft incidents that have recently plagued locals. Earlier this year, the former chairperson of the Bela-Bela Crime Support (BBCS) group, Elri Arlow, said they were suspicious of a similar pattern of breakins, which they suspect the courts may link to one person and/or syndicate. “We have been receiving reports that small items have gone missing from homes. Pots, braai equipment, tools and generally things that people won’t notice have gone missing. Maluleke has been arrested many times for such crimes and we suspected him immediately,” she said. Maluleke was arrested last year and charged with theft as he attempted to steal a compressor from a house in Strydom Street in Bela-Bela. A heap of stolen goods were also found in an abandoned house he used to store items. In 2015, Maluleke had even been reportedly shot in the leg as he attempted to flee from police officers during a burglary incident he had been implicated in.

Hercules Delport case postponed again the time. Further investigations by the Bela-Bela police have since led to the discovery of more body parts, believed to belong to Makhanzi, as well as the arrest of Delport
Justin Steyn The trial of the murder accused Hercules Delport has not yet seen the light of day. Delport appeared before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 29 June, but the long-awaited trial was postponed yet again, due to the absence of the legal representative for the defence. The 48-year-old is alleged to be one of two men accused of murdering a man from Tzaneen, Lawrence Makhanzi, more than two years ago. Severed parts of Makhanzi’s mutilated body, including a severed arm, were found scattered near the Warmbad Dam area in 2015. Wilson Aphiri, a Bela-Bela municipal employee from the department of water and sanitation, found the limb near a water purification plant at Roodepoort, where he worked. “I was busy working with a water pump and when I walked back to my car, I saw the arm lying on the ground. I immediately notified the police,” he told The Post at

MEC touts Caster Semenya as a role model Lizzy Bapela Limpopo Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Onica Moloi, dispatched chess sets to schools from across the Waterberg at Mokopane on Monday 26 June. The sets were given out on the occasion of the launch of the Chess in Schools Programme, held at the Mokopane Education Multipurpose Community Centre. In attendance were officials from provincial, district and local government. These included, among others, the Department of Education, local municipality sports desks, chess clubs, schools’ sports officials, Love Life and the Academy of Sports. The MEC has prioritised chess as a sport with the potential to draw the interest of many youngsters. It is generally agreed that chess is a sport that enriches the mind, increases one’s IQ level, and also nurtures a culture of problem-solving for participants, regardless of age. The Waterberg event was the launching pad for the chess in schools programme earmarked for the broader province.

Go-ahead for municipal projects Ronél van Jaarsveld The LIM368 municipality (now known as the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality) recently passed the new Integrated Development Plan and annual budget, as well as a host of short-, medium- and long-term projects that will have a positive impact on the lives of residents. According to Mayor Marlene van Staden, certain projects will be implemented in the 2017/2018 financial year. These include, among others, the Municipal Infrastructure Grant which was earmarked to pay for the paving of streets in Lesideng, maintenance to streets in Phagameng and storm-water drainage. In addition, the grant would pay for the upgrading of internal storm water and paving of streets Extension 3, the bulk supply of water and storage reservoirs’ upgrade, the development of a sports facility in Leseding (phase 3), the establishment of a new landfill site in Modimolle, and sewer outfall and yard connection (phase 2). Selamolela said the challenges of illiteracy, unemployment, substance and drug abuse, and other social ills, could be reduced if young people spend more of their spare time in sports activities. Moloi said in her keynote address the Limpopo-based sports heroine Caster Semenya stood out as a source of inspiration to the youth. She said her department would be working with municipalities in order to ensure dysfunctional sports facilities were repaired. The MEC further said township and village kids would be encouraged to take part in sports codes such as swimming, rugby and cricket. “We are also going to work with municipalities to identify areas to place giant chess sets, starting from next month. We urge municipalities to start identifying the areas to place the sets, and we also intend to place them in taverns, in order to reduce alcohol consumption,” she said. A brief chess clinic was conducted during the event with one of the sponsors, The Ranch Hotel, giving away two vouchers to the best players. The popular chess movie, Queen of Kwate, was screened at the end of proceedings.
LIM368 name change Ronél van Jaarsveld Goodbye to LIM368 and welcome (back) to Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality! All 28 council members voted to accept the name of Modimolle-Mookgophong for the former LIM368 Municipality at a council meeting held on Thursday 29 June. The municipalities of Modimolle and Mookgophong were amalgamated on 3 August 2016, during the municipal elections. The zoning council accepted the temporary name of LIM368 until a new name could be chosen, and residents were asked to participate in the renaming process. “I am glad that this name was decided on,” said Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden. “We wanted something that the community would be pleased with, and we didn’t want to exclude anyone. It is good to have a name again, and not be known as simply LIM368.” The name change will require changes in the municipality’s trademark, which will mean new signage on municipal vehicles, new letterheads, and so on. The zoning council allocated a budget of R1 million for costs associated with the name change, and amalgamation of the municipalities.

TK Mashaba Bela-Bela-born fashion designer Potego Rihlanpfu left a footprint at the Vodacom Durban July, with potential customers asking for his contact details. Rihlanpfu and six other designers were invited to showcase their work at the annual fashion event by the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture. He believes that this has been an excellent opportunity for him, and says that many fashion lovers asked for his
contact information during the event. “I never thought my designs would be so popular,” he said, “but my visit to Durban has opened new doors.” Rihlanpfu has been on the design circuit for about two years as a professional, but he has been making clothes from 2006. “I started out just helping people with alterations on their old clothes, but in 2015 I started learning how to start a garment from scratch.” He has been invited to another fashion event which is to be held soon in Venda.
Mayor on workplace harmony Lizzy Bapela Modimolle-Mookgophong mayor Marlene Van Staden has committed her office to a harmonious workplace environment for municipal employees. She said she envisions an environment where municipal employees enjoy their work and draw pride in their service to the community. Van Staden was speaking during an employee wellness event held on Wednesday 28 June. A number of the municipal employees participated in a fun walk that commenced at the local traffic headquarters to Ephraim Mogale Stadium. The fun walk was followed by a formal programme at the stadium, where stalls manned by stakeholders shared information on a range of workplacerelated matters.
The sponsors included Liberty Life, Capitec Bank, Metropolitan, Sanlam, Old Mutual, Discovery Health, Rakhutsetsa Holdings, as well as Vuwani Holdings and Funerals, among others. The workers participated in sporting activities, competing against each other as groups and individuals. The activities included aerobics, netball, soccer and sack race. In her address, Van Staden said that the workers should be proud of their jobs, as they play a vital role in the development of the community. She said when residents had issues with services, they were pointing fingers directly at the entire municipal workforce. Modimolle-born sports fanatic and educator, Ally Pole, was the motivational speaker at the event. He impressed on the participants to take part in sport, which he said developed both body and mind.
Uncertainty rules at Diesel n Dust TK Mashaba Reports of the imminent sale of the status of SAB Regional League campaigners, BelaBela’s popular Diesel n Dust FC has jarred nerves among players, technical staff and fans. Club owner Pat Seema said he had not yet entered into formal negotiations with any takers, but that two potential buyers had shown interest. What fuelled the anxiety was that Seema has disclosed that one of the buyers was from Mokopane and the other from Johannesburg, which effectively means the soccer outfit might relocate elsewhere in the Waterberg. “Yes, there is someone interested from Mokopane and the other one from Gauteng,” he said. Seema said he was not at liberty to reveal the asking price, as negotiations had not even started with anyone in particular. He assured Diesel n Dust supporters he would continue to focus on the ladies soccer and netball teams, which were doing fairly well.

Zani Hiepner Tshepiso Makwembila who spent most of her childhood at Vaalwater, did not give up without a fight when she discovered her true love for volleyball. Makwembila grew up loving netball and played it for most of her primary school days. At the age of nine she moved to Mookgophong where she attended Laerskool Eugène N. Marais and continued her love for netball and athletics. “One day I was walking home through the township when I saw a group playing volleyball, I was not sure what it was at the time,” she told The Post. At the age of 13 at Grd 7 year, she finally gathered the courage and asked the township volleyball coach if she could join and if he could teach her the game she found so intriguing. That is when she fell in love with volleyball. Unfortunately, the schools she attended did not offer volleyball as a sport, but this did not stop her from wanting to take it further. After matriculating from Settlers Agriculture High school in 2016, Makwembila left to continue her studies in Polokwane and this is where her love for volleyball grew. “When I found out that they had a volleyball team I jumped for joy and immediately joined the team in 2017.” She joined the Spikers team where she was finally able to compete in the local leagues and participate for the first time. “In May this year I received a call that changed my life,” said Makwembila. The South African volleyball coach had spotted her during the league games and asked her if she would join the team representing South Africa in China for the BRICS Games hosted in Guangzhou. “I asked the coach if he was sure he had the right person, as I could not believe what he was asking me. He politely confirmed that he was speaking to the right person and I said yes without thinking twice,” said Makwembila. Before their flight to China on 14 June, the township girl had never been on a plane and was nervously excited to be competing at international level. “It was a dream come true,” said Makwembila. The team played
four matches in China and unfortunately lost all of them, but she mentioned that the experience was worthwhile and something she would treasure forever.

Modimolle youth on the move for Youth Council Mzamane Ringane A youth movement in Modimolle proved its capability when it hosted a successful sporting event at the local Susan Strijdom special school on Wednesday, 28 June. The event was a sequel to a theoretical skills programme that the members underwent in March. The skills programme was hosted by local youth under the banner of the South African Youth Council (SAYC). The event was staged in conjunction with the Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA). Activities kicked off in March and continued for several weeks at the local Peter Nchabeleng Community Hall. Ntombi Nyembe of SAYC said the programme served to equip unemployed youth with skills in sports and recreation. She said the fact that these young people managed to host a successful event at a zero budget and within a short space of time

should be a motivating factor. She encouraged these young people to come together and start something that can change their lives positively. “Our role as the South African Youth Council is just bridging the gaps, to bring opportunities to young people so they can

Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane It is now apparent that lack of resources will not stop Magnificent FC from competing in the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality Mayor’s Cup this season. The team, which appeared in the preliminary stages of the Mayor’s Cup with barefooted players, continued to secure a spot in the next stages of the competition. Teams from within the municipality have already started with the knockouts, culminating into the main event. On Saturday, Magnificent FC played to a 3all draw with Modimolle All Stars at the end of the 90 minutes. In the penalties, Magnificent FC won 5-4 as they confirmed the continuation of their journey, on barefoot! It was the end of the journey for Terrors FC who lost 5-1 at the hands of United FC. Coincidentally, Home Defenders FC and Happy Boys FC also secured 5-1 victories against their opponents Arsenal FC and Rangers FC respectively. All Stars FC won on a walkover against Modimolle Masters.
In Vaalwater, Baroka FC secured a 2-0 walkover victory against Tigers FC. A 1-all stalemate between Seven Stars FC and Highlighters FC was decided on penalties where Seven Stars won 6-5. Another 1-all draw of the day between Zebras FC and Sporo FC saw the two teams go into penalties. Sporo FC won 6-5 from the lottery. In other fixtures, Motherwell FC won 2-0 against Wits FC, with Young Stars securing a 2-1 victory against Bakgalaka FC. Stone Breakers FC won 3-2 on penalties after a hard fought 0-all draw with Mabatlane Clinic FC. Jacaranda FC won 2-0 on walkover against Black Stars FC. Modimolle LFA chairperson Hlupi Lehong, who co-organised the tournament, said the preliminary stages of the Mayor’s Cup will be concluded this coming weekend, where eight final teams will forwarded to participate in the main event. Lehong acknowledged Modimolle-based referee Titus Segwapa for volunteering his services during these games. He indicated that the passion for football development must always prevail, so that the youngsters within the borders of ModimolleMookgophong can be given the opportunity to shine. Contrary to the previous years where the Mayor’s Cup was only about football, this year’s event will be a 4-in-1 affair. It will consist of a fun run/walk, soccer, volleyball and netball. The two-day Mayoral event will be held at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium from Saturday, 15 July to Sunday, 16 July.
see their capabilities,” she said. Nyembe said although jobs are scarce in the country, young people must take into account the fact that they can be able to create opportunities for themselves. One of the beneficiaries of the programme, Frans Sebola, who was also a
coordinator of the event, said the whole idea came after engagements with SAYC and CATHSSETA. Sebola was delighted the event went ahead as planned and expressed gratitude towards everyone who contributed towards its success. He also observed that those who underwent the skills programme were eager to carve their own niche into broader society. In netball the host team, Institute of Sport (IOS) whipped their Community Work Programme (CWP) opponents 22- 5 in the final. As a gesture of goodwill, IOS gave up their trophy and medals to the secondpositioned CWP netball team. The Department of Public Works and SAPS teams played to a 2-all draw, in regulation time. The two had to go to penalties, with Public Works securing a 5-4 victory. The SAPS team outshined the Department of Health 4-2 in the semi-finals, while Public Works punished CWP 3-1 to reach the final.

The South African squad, which featured Bela-Bela’s Malega, was knocked out of the preliminary stages by Latin American multisports giants, Brazil.
The final score was 2-0. The tournament was staged under the banner of the Brics economic powerhouse, which featured teams from Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. Malega plays for the local Kamplits Volleyball Club, and was expected to share her acquired wealth of experience with fellow players back home. The cherry on top
African team’s performance. The Bela-Bela man is a tour organiser with the national volleyball federation. He said off the field the team was taken on a guided tour of some of Hong Kong’s tourist attractions, which was an eyeopener, especially for the young players. Going forward, Kamplits Volleyball Club would immediately start preparations ahead of inter-provincial games scheduled for the Free State capital of Bloemfontein, from 17 to 22 July. Beyond the Bloemfontein engagements, the local team was booked to play in the Tubby Cup from 13 to 19 August.
