Senior citizen in purjury charge Lizzy Bapela

A case of alleged purjury was being investigated against an elderly man from Bela-Bela. According to police sources, the senior citizen reported a case of theft out of a motor vehicle on 17 October, from which his cellphone and navigator were allegedly stolen. The BEAT has learnt that police investigations had established the items were removed by a younger woman from the man’s suburbia house. The police had also established the man allegedly owed the woman money, and when he failed to pay, the woman allegedly removed the missing items. Police said investigators were satisfied the elderly man had to face a case of purjury.

Transport authorities campaign for road safety Lizzy Bapela Transport authorities were determined to tackle head-on bad road users starting with a campaign in Bela-Bela in recent days. The national Department of Transport and its agencies hosted an event in BelaBela to launch the 2017 festive season safety campaign on Friday, 1 December. Targeted were all road users including motorists and pedestrians. Officials from the department, together with those from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), and also Cross Boarder, interacted with BelaBela shoppers at Bela-Mall. The teams distributed pamphlets bearing messages of safety, and handed out goodies such as reflector jackets, and also stationery and sweets for kids. Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni and his entourage were among those who visited the stalls and received relevant information. A delegation from the ModimolleMookgophong mayor’s office also attended. The event was held as a build-up to the major event, the National 2017 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign Launch, which was scheduled to take place at Bela-Bela’s Sunfa Stadium on Tuesday, 5 December. Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi, and Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Makoma Mahurupetje, were billed to preside over the event. Kids had fun during the campaign. Court lashes out at Waterberg ANC and PEC Lizzy Bapela

The High Court in Polokwane has opened a can of worms with regards to the alleged underhand actions of the leadership of the ANC in the Waterberg and the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC). Several branch members from the Waterberg ANC successfully interdicted both the region and the PEC, with the court prohibiting the latteer from holding the regional conference scheduled from last Friday, 1 December, to Saturday, 2 December. In granting the interdict, Acting Judge AJV Sikhwari said the

court had found that certain PEC members had changed names of delegates, “lawfully elected by branches”, with the names of their own “preferred” candidates. The applicants were the ANC’s ward 7 in Mogalakwena, Sarah Monyeki, Erick Moilwe, Albert Malose Matlou, Jan Selolo, Mahlodi Josephina Madiba, Twodays Molele and Samson Meteleni. The respondents in the matter before the court were the Waterberg ANC regional executive committee, Luthuli House (ANC headquarters), PEC and ANC NEC convener, the National Assembley lawmaker, Ruth Bhengu. “The respondents (Waterberg ANC and PEC) are interdicted, restrained

and prohibited from preparing and continuing with the conference of the ANC Waterberg region, which conference is to be held on 1st and 2nd December 2017 at Bela-Bela or at any place (or) date,” Acting Judge Judge AJV Sikhwari ruled. The judge was scathing in her judgement, charging that the conduct of the ANC Waterberg region and the PEC was in violation of the guidelines of the ANC NEC. “It is also violating the ANC Constitution, consequently it violates the rights of the applicants,” the court ruled. Acting Judge Sikhwari further ruled that such a conference could only be held pending; 1. the resolution of credentials for delegates,

EFF leader charged with trespassing

2. auditing and verification of delegates, 3. resolution of appeals lodged by branches and members, and 4. investigation of PEC members who changed the names of delegates, lawfully elected by branches with the names of their preferred candidates. The Waterberg ANC regional conference was abandoned over the weekend of Friday, 3 November, following sharp differences with regards to, among others, the authenticity of certain delegates. The Waterberg ANC had, at the time of going to press, just under a week to respond to the High Court’s ruling ahead of the ANC national elective conference next Friday, 15 December.

Sello Moswoeu (left) addressing supporters. Photo supplied Justin Steyn Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) coordinator Sello Moswoeu was charged with trespassing on Tuesday, 28 November. The charge is a sequel to recent land invasions spearheaded by the local EFF firebrand, Moswoeu.

The disputed land, owned by the Belas-Bela Local Municipality, lies between Bela-Bela’s Spa Park and Ward 1. The court case is based on the land invasions which took place in October. A defiant Moswoeu posted a message on the EFF Bela-Bela Facebook page, charging that he

would not be “intimidated”. He made his first court appearance at the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday,1 December. The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court postponed the case to Wednesday, 10 January, next year. Emerging from the courtroom, Moswoeu called on his supporters to identify more land to occupy.

The Bela-Bela Municipality launched the Bela Bela Community Tourism Association on Wednesday, 22 November. According to the municipal spokesperson, David Raborolo, representatives from Limpopo Tourism Association, and the Waterberg Regional Tourism Association all graced the launch. Rabololo said the initiative was aimed at maximising the town as a tourists’destination

of choice. “The core function of the association will be to provide information on tourism related issues and products within the municipality,” he said. He said local stakeholders have been elected to steer the fledgling association Riaan Maritz was elected the chairperson, with socialite Matome Sebelebele deputizing him. Mavis Chabalala, a tourism practitioner at the Bela-Bela Local Municipality, was elected as the secretary of the Bela-Bela Community Tourism Association.

Educators honoured

SADTU honoured retired educators from various schools within the Modimolle area. Photo: Mzamane Ringane

Mzamane Ringane The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in Modimolle honoured retired educators, on the occasion of the yearend function held at the local correctional services centre on Friday, 1 December. The event also served to commemorate World AIDS Day, which is widely observed on the 1st December each year across the planet. People from various parts of the country and as far as beyond the African continent utilise this day to show their support for people living with HIV, and to also remember those who have succumbed to the virus. SADTU Waterberg regional gender convener, Caro Ngobeni, advised people to get tested and know their HIV status. “HIV is a condition that can be managed if people can get tested early and receive treatment,” she said. Speaking during the event, SADTU Modimolle chairperson Neela Ramaphakela said it was important for his union to support those who are living with HIV/AIDS because

“if they are infected, we are directly affected”. Ramaphakela took the opportunity to commend educatorts who continued to soldier on, against the backdrop of a mass exodus of educators who were part of government employees who chose to resign in 2015, in light of allegations that they would no longer be entitled to a lump sum upon retirement. “As teachers, we must always withstand all challenges and serve our community no matter how difficult it might be. Teaching is a special calling, and that is why we are here today to honour these men and women who have dedicated their time to serve the public,” he said. Nylstroom circuit’s assistant director of governance, Jack Rakgoale, said 2017 has been a fairly smooth year for the education fraternity across the circuit, and it was hoped that it will reflect in the matric results. “We had more time spent in classes, than on the streets protesting, and because of this we think this is a very good year we have ever had,” he said. Rakgoale also highlighted drug abuse and bullying as some of the challenges which needed serious attention at schools.

State vet still in short supply Justin Steyn Pet-owners in and around Bela-Bela have allegedly failed to find answers with regards to the proper –or lack thereof – functioning of the Towoomba Agricultural Research Centre. Regomoditswe Maluleke from the local township was the latest to complain to The BEAT about the situation at the centre. She alleged that upon her visit to the institution she was told that the centre no longer housed sufficient and adequate medication for domestic animals such as dogs and cats. The provincial department of agriculture had, at the time of going to press, not responded to a query emailed on Thursday, 23 November. The head of the centre, Chris Sonnekus, said the provision of services was the

responsibility of the local municipality. However, Bela-Bela Local Municipality spokesperson, David Raborolo, said the services were the responsibility of the agricultural authorities. Maluleke said on arrival she spoke to a vet who alleged the department had reduced medical supplies at the Towoomba Agricultural Centre. She said the vet indicated only domestic farm animals could receive full treatment. Dogs and cats, she was allegedly told, were only given rabies injections and flu shots. In July of 2016, The Post reported that resident Deborah De Lange said that she took her cocker spaniel to the vet as she had been suffering from cat flu, but could not be assisted to her satisfaction. De Lange said she had to buy a drip for her dog from a private vet, as one was not available at the state vet.

Yuletide beckons early for Modimolle-Mookgophong kids Mzamane Ringane Christmas came early for the children at Modimolle’s Abram Kriel Kinderhuis and Mookgophong’s Mantadi Child and Youth Care Centre. It was a joyous moment when the Modimolle branch of JD Group’s bedding house brand, Sleepmasters donated ten beds at each of these two centres recently. Limpopo Area Manager, Sadikela Pole, said this was part of their corporate social investment programmes, whose objective was to give back to the community. “We looked around the province and felt that the

Beds were delivered to the two centres. Photo supplied two centres needed this kind of support, hence we chose them,” she said. Pole said the contribution amounted to the tune of

R73 000. The two centres are nonprofit organisations, which provide shelter and caring for both child and youth.

The 2018 Mr and Miss Mookgophong finalists. Photo supplied Mzamane Ringane Following a challenging but yet fruitful year for the reigning Mr and Miss Mookgophong, the new winners will have big shoes to fill after being crowned on Saturday, 9 December at the Mookgophong Community Hall. The new Mr and Miss Mookgophong will take over the reigns from the King, Phuti Winston Kgopedi and Queen Betra Malema. The 13 finalists, seven female and six male were selected during auditions held this year in July. The reigning King and Queen, along with their runners-up have been involved in community development projects in

Mookgophong since they took the reigns. Bring a Child to school and Dr Mathosa Foundation’s Donate a Pad are among the remarkable community projects that these young people have championed during their tenure. A vibrant Women’s Day march led by Malema received a positive response from locals in August this year. Co-organiser George Khosa said they were hoping to continue improving the lives of Mookgophong people, through the Mr and Miss Mookgophong initiative. Khosa applauded the outgoing twosome for their determination. “They really challenged, motivated and inspired many young lives in Mookgophong, and they deserve all the credit,” he said.

Mzamane Ringane Limpopo MEC for Education, Ishmael Kgetjepe, has called on all learners to refrain from taking part in the so-called pens down parties. Pens down parties are events organised mainly for learners who have just finished writing their examinations, especially those who are in Grade 12. These parties are mostly held on the first Saturday of December, a few days after the completion of the final examinations. “Pens Down” parties were being planned for weekends leading into the Christamas holidays. The Department of Education however expressed its delight and satisfaction with the manner in which the examinations unfolded. “The Department would like to urge all learners across the province not to associate the end of examinations with parties, known as “Pens Down Parties”,” MEC Kgetjepe said. Learners were further urged to use their time sensibly by reflecting on their academic journey, and plan for a better 2018. He advised that part of growing up included taking responsible decisions and remaining disciplined. MEC Kgetjepe said that self-discipline would go a long way in shaping the future of these young people. “We want the results to find every learner in a good state of being and health,” MEC, Kgetjepe added.

who like the behind-the-scenes kind of journalism. A review of the sporting highlights was so loaded with reports, that we separated soccer from other sporting codes, and produced two different stories travelling back memory lane. The other sporting codes beyond soccer included volleyball, netball, athletics, road-running and so forth. The most fascinating review –for the editor, that is –was a revisit of all the best pictures captured by the reporters over the year in review, such as the one on which a kid is handling a juvenile rock python. Another of my personal favourites was a revisit of the headlines we carried, especially the two that went “Choking from gun-smoke” as well as “Armed and dangerous”. You can also look forward to the piece “Up close and personal,” based on the kind of people who have been visiting The BEAT offices over the year in review. The most memorable, for both editor and reporters, was the gentleman who claimed to have dropped a R50 note in our offices, but later went into deep thought and voila! Remembered he had tucked the banknote beneath his own sock. Write to the Editor at beateditor@gmail.com or PO Box 16 Bela-Bela 0480.

training, Bontle Maake, said the programme has opened her eyes in many ways. “Although I am in the recycling business, I have also acquired much in terms of starting and running any type of business. The next step is to transform what we have learned here into thriving businesses,” she said. LEDET waste information system administrator, Phuti Mabotha, said the waste sector had room to create job opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs. “Waste is created everyday, and that translates to another job opportunity for those who want work in the waste sector,” he said. Prasa training officer, Joe Peu, said the locals who attended the programme showed hunger for success, but they needed support to succeed. “There is no success that is going to be achieved in a short period of time. They need to be dedicated, have passion and they need to work harder for them to succeed,” he said.

Carina Bester Baldwin Hlongwane is a self-taught musician from Mookgophong whose career dates back to his boyhood at Hoërskool Hans Strijdom. Affectionately known as “Baldwin Kay”, he bought his first acoustic guitar in 2012. He learned the finer points of playing his favourite instrument alongside musical videos on YouTube. This local star now performs at gala dinners, concerts, weddings and art exhibitions. At the age of 14, Hlongwane was part of a group called Mookgophong Theatre of Arts and Culture and that is where he met his mentor, Jouzeph Tema. “Tema advised me to record my first single,” Hlongwane said. He has since won the coveted Love Life Music Award in 2010, and also the Hansies Got Talent in 2015.

“The awards gave me a boost to want to collect more and grow. When I look back to where I come from, I thank the grace of God,” Hlongwane said. Kay loves the Afro-pop repertoire and said it inspires people. “I researched the genre that is most typically for older people, and at first it was about proving to my fellow youth that anything is possible, but I ended up loving the Afro-pop idiom,” he explained. Hlongwane matriculated in 2015, and subsequently co-founded the Bajore music ensemble. He said he planned to study music parttime whilst continuing to work as a musician during the new year. Hlongwane said has composed three albums, two of which were released as singles. “I believe it is only that one hit song that will put me on the map. That is why I am pushing singles until I get a larger fan base,” he said.

One of the rockery projects. Photo: Justin Steyn Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela Local Municipality has launched a major makeover and greening of the neighbourhood ahead of the festive season. According to municipal spokesperson David Robololo, the municipality was undertaking the exercise, depending on the broader community to also give a voluntary hand. “We have started this project by building rockeries at the department of transport offices, and will move towards inner sections of the town and elsewhere. “For example, the sections in

Chris Hani Road that lay barren, we want to decorate with plants and rock formations. “We would like to invite the community and local business to donate whatever plants or precious stones they have for this project,” he said. Robololo said that the municipaliy currently favoured shrubs that do not require much water and have a high tolerance to heat. “Plants that do not need plenty of water can be used in this project. This aims to make our town pretty, to promote a sense of welcoming to those who will be spending their vacations here,” Rabololo said.

TK Mashaba Bela-Bela child murder accused Tumelo Ngobeni was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Thursday, 30 November. The sentence by the Modimolle Regional Court was a sequel to the gruesome death of threeyear old Kamogelo Ramulane, who was doused with petrol and burnt alive. The child died of her wounds in hospital. Police believe the tragedy was a follow-up to a protection order

request by Kamogelo’s mother, Tshenolo, against Ngobeni. On the day of the tragedy, Kamogelo was rushed to Mmankweng Hospital at Mokopane for treatment, but passed away at around 19:00 on 14 October. Speaking after Ngobeni’s sentencing, Kamogelo’s mother, Tshenolo, said she was still hurting but added she was thankful justice had taken its course. Ngobeni spent 14 months in custody after he was denied bail several times.

Bela-Bela ward councillor Freddy Hlungwane was expected to appear before the local magistrate’s court on a charge of common assault on Friday, 26 January. The case was postponed for further investigations from Friday, 1 December. The court case is a sequel to ongoing housing disputes at Extension 9. Meantime, the Bela-Bela Local Municipality has said matters around housing disputes needed to be raised with the relevant authorities. Municipal spokesperson David Raborolo said the matter remained an allegation until formalised though the authorities. The BEAT first reported on the developments when community leader Lucas Phala alleged that community members in Extention 9 had been misled by a sitting councillor. Raborolo said the matter remained an allegation and recommended that Phala raise it with the relevant authorities. He said as far as the municipality was concerned, Hlungwane continued to engage his ward with regards to developments in the area.
