Having your birthday on Christmas Day is a special honour. The odds are vastly against being born on any specific day, but Christmas…well, that’s something special, isn’t it? Apart from sharing one’s birthday with Jesus, there are other greats who share the birthday. One of these was Clara Barton, who founded the American Red Cross. Another was Humphrey Bogart, perhaps the best of the early film stars. Singers Annie Lennox, Dido, and Alannah Myles were all born on Christmas Day. So were soccer players Chris Kamara, Jairzinho, Francis Doe, and others. Christmas Day may not be a birthday that ‘destines you for greatness’ but, it is certainly a blessed day to be born on, and that’s a good sign.

Man allegedly kills girlfriend before Christmas Justin Steyn Police in Bela-Bela have arrested a 37 yearold man who allegedly killing his 28 year old girlfriend, whose name has not yet been released. The incident happened on the evening of Sunday 20 December at Extension 5 of the Bela-Bela Township. The Bela-Bela police spokesperson Maria Maleto said that Solomon Ndlovu was injured in the altercation between himself and the deceased and had to be hospitalized for two weeks before being discharged. Ndlovu suffered severe injuries on his arms, face and throat.

Ndlovu made his first court appearance on Tuesday 5 January where his case was postponed to Friday 8 January for bail application. He remains in custody at the Bela-Bela police station. Maleto said that the police encourages the community to report all cases of domestic violence as most of them eventually lead to death of one or both partners. “We have Victim Support Centres at the Police station that are equipped with trained officials who are there to assist with such cases. They offer counselling, temporary shelter, food, clothing and other things to help empower the victim and they operate 24 hours a day,” she said.

Suspect arrested and charged with murder in mystery arm case

TK Mashaba The Maphage family are still in shock after they noticed that the tombstone they had put up for their deceased loved one Boitumelo Maphage has vanished from the Bela-Bela cemetery. The Maphages, who reside at Pienaarsrivier, have since opened a case with the police. Benjamin Maphage said that they found the tombstone missing when they went to clean the grave site ahead of

the festive season on Saturday, 21 November. “When we checked in October, it was still there, but when we went back in November it was gone,” said Maphage. He said that he also reported the matter to municipal officials. “They promised me that they will work on security to ensure that the graveyard is protected from thieves,” he said. Municipal spokesperson Matome Sebelebele could not be reached for comment.

12 murder accused out on bail again Justin Steyn The twelve people accused of the murder of William Mokonyane from Pankop outside Pienaarsrivier are out on bail again following their fourth court appearance on Wednesday, 9 December. During this court appearance the accused were granted bail and the case was postponed to Friday, 12 February. Thokozile Nkosi (48), Johannes Semetsing (35), Mapule Mabosela, Tlou Sebatjani (52), Jack Nkwana (28), Mpho Moseamedi (25), John Chabalala (32), Nhlenyane Mashiyo (48), Amos Matlala (35), Rachel Tshabalala (26), Reuben Chabalala and Collen Chabalala (21) were all arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder which took place Friday, 28 August.

A man was arrested in December, and a second suspect is being sought by police, in connection with the murder of an unknown man. The arm of the suspected victim was found outside Bela-Bela in July last year. Photo: Justin Steyn

Mokonyane was allegedly tied up and beaten by the twelve suspects, who allegedly accused him of stealing. Paramedics from the provincial EMS said that they were called to the scene where they found that the victim had been badly beaten with knobkieries and was surrounded by members of the local community. “When we arrived at the scene we saw that the man was unconscious and tied up. He was bleeding heavily. Several bystanders threatened to kill us when we tended to him and claimed that he had been stealing from them,” said one of the paramedics. Mokonyane was taken to a hospital in Polokwane, but died shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, thirteen other people were arrested for public violence against the police officers who made the arrest.

Andries van der Heyde The Bela-Bela police made a breakthrough at the beginning of December in the case of a severed arm which was found near a water purifying plant at Roodepoort outside Bela-Bela in July. A municipal worker found the arm. According to police the arm had been exposed for about a month before being found. The charge sheet states that the unknown victim was abducted from Modjadjiskloof, Tzaneen, and murdered in the Bela-Bela

area. Clifford Cawood (30) was arrested on Thursday, 3 December, after investigations indicated that he was apparently connected with the crime. His most recent court appearance was on Thursday, 17 December, in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court. Another suspect is being sought by police. Cawood stands accused of murder, and was not awarded bail. His case is expected to appear on Friday, 29 January. Cawood will remain in custody until his appearance. The police were not able to say whether the rest of the victim’s body had been found yet.

The 31st of December was a time of celebration for the fun-loving crowds in Bela-Bela, but the evening went south for some when a firework rocket ended up on the thatch roof of the Corner Car Wash Line 4, setting the roof ablaze. The crowd nearby saw the blaze begin and ran to start putting out the fire. The owner was not nearby, but bystanders raced with buckets to stop the blaze from spreading. The bystanders were giving up hope, finding themselves unable to quench the blaze, when the police and fire services rushed to the rescue. The damage was severe, although no numbers have as yet been released. For the past two years festive crackers have required a license as a large number of people were using fireworks without proper safety precautions. The Bela-Bela Police could not be reached for comment on the matter.

Adams gets 25 years for murder

Desmain Adams was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murdering a school teacher from Bela-Bela In October last year. Photo: Herman Steyn

Despite the water restrictions in BelaBela, some residents of Salusoord at Bela-Bela have been running their sprayers all day. Photo: Andries van der Heyde Andries van der Heyde Justin Steyn 20-year old Desmain Adams was sentenced to 25 years for the murder of Lindie Bosch Jansen, a school teacher from Bela-Bela, which took place on Sunday 18 October. Adams’ sentencing hearing took place on Tuesday 15 December at the Bela-Bela Magistrates court. Magistrate Theuns Prinsloo sentenced Adams to 15 years imprisonment for the count of theft and 15 years for the count of murder but he will serve a suspended sentence of 25 years.

During court proceedings Magistrate Theuns Prinsloo said that Adams may appeal against the sentencing but also indicated that the family of Bosch-Jansen is also entitled to oppose the appeal. During court appearances in November Adams pleaded guilty to both charges. He admitted that he had unlawfully and intentionally stabbed Bosch-Jansen in the chest on the night in question. Adams also admitted that he intended to steal a Garmin GPS system from her vehicle on the night of her murder. Adams said that he only drew a knife, which he used to stab Bosch-Jansen, when she

spotted him attempting to steal the GPS system. He said he then fled the scene after he had stabbed Bosch-Jansen, who died in hospital on the same night. The case against Adams had been postponed on numerous occasions due to his apparent inability to speak English and an appropriate translator was sought out for him. It later became apparent that Adams was fully capable of understanding and speaking English during his later appearances. Adams will serve his sentence at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria

Criminals jailed ahead of Christmas holidays Lizzy Bapela Six criminals spent their festive season in jail following their sentencing when they appeared before the Modimolle Regional Court in December. All the accused were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each after they were found guilty of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances. The accused’s arrest and subsequent court appearance follows an incident that took place at a farm in Modimolle in December 2007. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay, an armed robbery took place at the farm. According to police six suspects with SAPS badges arrived at the farm in a VW Polo and a double-cab bakkie. He said that the suspects pretended to be

police officers and allegedly arrested a farm worker for murder. He added that the six interviewed the so-called suspect and wanted to take a statement from the farmer as well. When the farmer agreed to give a statement, they held him, his wife and the farm worker at gun point and demanded money. The police said that the six managed to get R1 600 and robbed the couple of jewellery worth R50 000 and a handgun from the safe. They tied the farmer up in the cold room, his wife in the butchery and took the farm worker with them. Warrant Officer James Findlay said that two cigarette butts were found on the scene and nobody on the farm smokes cigarettes. He further said that the suspects’ vehicles were spotted parked at about 25 km from the farm on a gravel

road. He also said that during investigations 11 bottles of fresh milk were found inside the farm fence. Inspector Bester of Local Criminal Record Centre in Lephalale visited the scene after the incident to collect the cigarette butts and the milk bottles. All the suspects, Piet Malebane, Nicolas Mahlangu, Lethusa Lesenya, Mothakgadi Levis Seanego and Caiphus Mogale were arrested on 18 January 2008 and have been undergoing court proceedings since then. Malebane who was a warrant officer at Mabopane, while Mahlangu was a member of the Metro Police. The investigation officer in the case Warrant Officer Thomas Makhubela, State Prosecutor Doria Groenewald and the Magistrate Tinus Prinsloo welcomed the accused’s sentencing.

Water sprayers are running at Salusoord at Bela-Bela despite the fact that water restrictions are currently in effect. Most of the people who live in Salusoord are pensioners or municipal employees. The water restrictions, which were put in place by municipal manager Morris Maluleka, forbid the use of garden hoses and sprayers. Residents are only allowed to wash their cars using buckets of water, and schools need to apply to the municipality to water their sports fields. Fines of R1 500 may be assessed on residents in violation of the restrictions, or their water may be cut off. The reason for the water restrictions are the water shortages which took place in the area in 2015. Reporters from The BEAT’s sister paper Die Pos visited Salusoord on Tuesday, 5 January, where they saw at least three hosepipe sprayers going full steam. The owners of the residences were not at home. A source told the reporters that certain residents leave their sprayers running all through the day while they are at work. Although these residents have been reported to the municipality, officials have not yet come out to remonstrate with the offending residents. The reporters managed to discover that the units where the sprayers run constantly, allegedly belong to the municipal employees. A representative of the municipal manager said that the message about the water restrictions was clearly communicated and anybody who sees another person misusing water should report the offender immediately.

EFF keeping mum about squatting near municipality Justin Steyn

The EFF at Bela-Bela said that they are still adamant about erecting shacks behind the town’s municipal offices despite not doing so in December as planned. Photo: Justin Steyn

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at Bela-Bela did not erect shacks behind the town’s municipal offices, despite vowing to do so during the December holidays. Before the official start of the festive season the political party’s coordinator Neo Moloko and convener, Sello Mosweu said that they plan to erect as many as 50 shacks due to Extension 8 residents being evicted by the Red Ants in June last year. Moloko said that the EFF planned to erect shacks to accommodate some of those who were left homeless due to that incident and blamed the local government for not making provisions. “Since these evictions, no provision has been made for these people, and only ANC supporters are now living there,” he said. The BEAT received a copy of the referendum from the EFF which had allegedly been sent to the town’s mayor, Lucas Nhlapo. The referendum demanded that, among others, Nhlapo apologise unconditionally on behalf of himself and the Municipality for “all the suffering that was caused during the last evictions which took place by the Red Ants in Extension 8”.

It was further demanded that Nhlapo should provide alternative land for those who were evicted and that they will be prioritized above anybody else together with a timeline of when that will take place as there are still quite a number of households homeless as a result of the evictions. The referendum further demands that Nhlapo will ensure that no further land evictions will be implemented under his watch unless alternative land had first been provided for those currently living on the land to relocate to, and 14 days must be allocated for them to relocate to the alternative land. Nhlapo was requested to reply to these demands in writing by Friday 18 December. In a recent telephonic interview, Moloko said that they will continue with their plans to erect the shacks and added that the party is currently busy with strategic planning. “We are still adamant about our plans and we are currently busy with strategic planning. Unfortunately not much can be divulged about our plans at this stage,” said Moloko. He also said that they have had no response from the municipality regarding the referendum. The Bela-Bela spokesperson, Matome Sebelebele was unavailable for comment.

The new year has arrived! 2016 is here, and while nobody is going to say that all your baggage from 2015 and before should suddenly grow wings and fly away, a new year is always a chance to start, more or less, from fresh. It’s a chance to reinvent yourself, to be a better person than you were last year. New Year’s Resolutions are a good way of doing that. Make a little list of things you plan to do in 2016. It can be big things: “I am going to finish my novel! I am going to do a course in Engineering! I am going to read 100 books this year!” or it can be smaller things: “I am going to stop smoking! I am going to lose weight!” It can even be things that are completely intangible: “I am going to be kinder. I am going to be wiser. I am going to be braver.” The last three there, they’re very important. We should all strive to be wise, and to be kind, and to be brave. They’re the three things most likely to make the world a better place. We should strive to be kind in our dealings with other people, other races, and other religions. We should strive to be kind to those less fortunate, to those who are

different, and to those who are strange. We should strive to be kind in small ways every day, and in big ways when the opportunity presents (and the opportunity will present, if you are looking). We should strive to be wise, and know that ‘different’ does not mean evil. We should strive for wisdom and know that life is not a zero-sum game — If you have more, that does not mean that I have less. We should strive to be wise, and remember that life is more strange and wonderful than we can ever imagine. We should strive to be brave, and be a voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves. We should strive to be brave, and stand up to oppression, no matter what face it wears. We should strive to be brave, and stand between the innocent and the darkness. Nobody can be kind all the time, or wise all the time, or brave all the time. Everyone has their moments when they wonder whether it’s really worth all the effort. But when you make your lists of resolutions for 2016, remember these three things. Trying to hold to these resolutions, even if you do not always succeed, is the best path to being a better person. Best wishes and good luck for 2016 from The BEAT.

Councillor Hlungwane strives to combat social ills

Happy Hearts FC emerged victorious in the first ever Councillor Hlungwane U/12 Soccer Tournament. These include among others substance abuse, school drop outs and roaming around the streets instead of engaging in developmental programmes such as sports. Eight teams from different wards in the township participated in the tournament, which aimed at developing Under-12 youngsters and kicked off on 24 December and ended on the 26th. Hlungwane Burials sponsored the tournament, which awarded a trophy and certificates to the winning team and two soccer

balls to the team that came in second position. In the first semi-final, Happy Hearts FC beat Zet FC 2-1, while Bela-Bela Pirates FC beat Blue Birds FC 1-0 in the second semi. Top teams Bela-Bela Pirates FC and Happy Hearts FC battled it out in the finals, where Happy Hearts FC emerged victorious, with a 2-1 win. Other teams that participated in the tournament include Real Madrid FC, Mandela IX FC, Bela-Bela All Stars FC and Super Strikers FC. Hlungwane highlighted that the scourge of nyaope abuse in the community is highly disturbing and structures, the government, law enforcers and parents need to tighten their fight against the problem as it affects everyone within the community. Hlungwane further said that the fact that nyaope abuse drives young people to steal from households in order to buy the drug and some end up behind bars is very disturbing and the law cannot win the fight working alone, hence the tournament. “We aim to go even bigger this year in our second annual tournament, where winners will be receiving stationery and all things school related. Our aim is to discourage school drop-outs and encourage young people to realize the importance of being educated and having qualifications. Khosa who serves as a Youth Chairperson at his church, said he believes Limpopo has talented individuals who can represent their province at any given level. This young and dedicated CEO of Lesmar Media Productions & Agencies said he noticed that a lot of youngsters are forced to leave their province and go to Gauteng in search for success. “It is not a bad idea to go beyond the borders of Limpopo to pursue our careers, but then we need to start at home. I believe that if we develop our youngsters locally, they will represent their province well even if they choose to go to other big cities. We want to develop the young people of Mookgophong and the entire Limpopo province. We want people to come to Limpopo in pursuit of success”, he said. Khosa told The BEAT that Lesmar Media Productions & Agencies was established in 2008 while he was in grade 11 and was officially registered in 2014.
