DISGUSTING!

Mzamane Ringane Residents of Jay Naidoo Street at Modimolle are being tormented by an overflowing sewer, and are demanding that the issue be given urgent attention. According to residents, the situation remains the same even after notifying the Modimolle Local Municipality. Parents fear the health hazards they might encounter due to this situation, and they are afraid that their children might fall into the sewer since it is partially open. Catherine Maswanganye, who is one of the residents of Phagameng’s Jay Naidoo Street, told The BEAT that they cannot
enjoy sitting outside without being disturbed by the unbearable smell coming from the sewer. Maswanganye told The BEAT that she lives with her four children and three grandchildren, who are also affected by the conditions on a daily basis. “This situation is affecting us negatively, and we are afraid that one day innocent children might fall into the sewer. The sewer lid is partly open, and that puts the lives of our children at great risk,” she said. Another local resident Selaelo Kubuzi also expressed concern over this situation, indicating that the safety of their children is not guaranteed as long as the issue
remains unsolved. Kubuzi said that the municipality had previously attended to the matter, but added that the problems are recurrent even after the situation was attended to. “This situation affects the whole neighbourhood. As parents and residents of Modimolle, we feel that it is our responsibility to report the matter as it affects all of us. We are hoping that the municipality will give us constant updates, so we can remain assured that they are attending to this matter,” she said. Modimolle Local Municipality spokesperson Patrick Shika told The BEAT on Monday 4 July that it seems as
though there are solid objects in the system, which made it difficult for the technicians to unblock it. “There have been constant blockages in that area. We have tried everything we can to fix the situation, but the problem recurs after some time. Under normal circumstances, it doesn’t take much time to fix a blocked sewer. We have determined that this situation needs much attention, and that is why we have decided to procure a Sewer Combination Jet to clean the entire system at that portion of Phagameng,” Shika said. Shika said that the Sewer Combination Jet was expected to start working on the site during the week.

Anti-poaching organization Pro-Track has paid tribute to one of their fallen members by establishing a fund to help the family of 20-year old Wisani Baloyi, who was killed during a recent poaching incident. Baloyi, who a member of a Pro-Track Anti-Poaching Unit stationed at Forever Resorts Warmbaths, was attacked by poachers along with three other guards on Friday, 16 June, while working at Forever Resorts in Bela-Bela. A group of seven armed men gained access to the resort and led the Pro-Track Anti-Poaching Unit into an ambush. Balaoyi was shot, and tied up with the other three guards. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
After the guards were neutralized their attackers entered the reserve, and proceeded to shoot and dehorn one of the resort’s rhinos before leaving the scene. The owner of Pro-Track, Vincent Barkus, said that his organization has established new patrols since the incident to ensure that no similar incidents occurred. “The guards who were involved in the attack are recovering and are back on the job. They have been stationed at a safer post since the attack,” he said. He added that they appeared to be doing well on their road to discovery. Baloyi was laid to rest in his home town of Giyani in the Mopani District on Saturday, 25 June. No arrests have been made in connection with the case, and the matter remains under investigation.

Lizzy Bapela Staff at the Phagameng High School in Modimolle have teamed up with the local police to embark on programmes that will lead to a crime-free school environment for everyone involved. The initiative was inspired by the recent
series of burglaries at different schools in the area, where public property was damaged. The police did not reveal the estimated value of damages suffered as a result of these crimes. Schools that were reportedly targeted previously include Phagameng High, Solomon Mahlangu and Laerskool Nylstroom. The police said that recently,
the schools that suffered the break-ins are only Phagameng High and Hector Peterson Primary. The SAPS Social Crime Prevention unit together with Sector 1 recently had a meeting at the school with the staff members, where a plan on how to prevent the break-ins was tabled. Modimolle police spokesperson Warrant Officer
James Findlay said that the incidents posed concerns to the stakeholders, hence the decision to come together and come up with a plan to work something out. He added that the plan is now in place and being implemented, although they will not elaborate on it at the moment as the perpetrators will know about it.
EFF visits Spa Park to deliver their manifesto EFF Waterberg chairperson Lebogang Monageng and his members visited Spa Park residents on Saturday, 2 July for their manifesto campaign ahead of the elections. During his presentation, Monageng mentioned the issues of land and education to the Ward 9 members who attended the meeting. “We as the EFF are promising to give land to our people as we learned that Spa Park has been sidelined by the municipality in the past few years,” said Monageng.
He promised that development would start as soon as the EFF took power in the municipality, but would only be possible if the community voted for the EFF on 3 August. “We want to uproot all corruption in the municipality,” said Monageng. He also touched on the issue of municipal manager Morris Maluleka. Monageng also touched on early child learning, and said that there had to be more early child learning so that young children could be educated at an earlier age. “As a nation, we are not going anywhere if we don’t start teaching our children the importance of education,” he said.

targeting truck drivers who stop there to rest. He also said that Modimolle is experiencing business robberies in the CBD. Police are urging business owners to sharpen their security and install surveillance cameras where possible.

Chaos and confusion in IEC lists
MEC’s funeral garners scant attention in Modimolle

TK Mashaba ANC councillor Godfrey Thapedi Malete of Pienaarsrivier woke up to a nasty surprise on Sunday, 3 July, when he found his name on the IEC candidate list of an opposition party he is not working for. Malete, who has been an ANC loyalist for many years, and a PR councillor for Ward 8, said that he was shocked when he was informed that his name was on the IEC list under the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP). To his surprise, his name and documents had been submitted along with a signature that he does not remember signing, at the IEC at Bela-Bela. On Monday, 4 July, Malete went to the IEC offices to enquire about the matter and was told that the IEC could do nothing about the matter, as the names had already been sent to their head office. Speaking to The BEAT on Monday, Malate said that he is definitely still with the ANC and has not crossed the floor to any other party. “I want to know who is responsible for this fraud,” said Malete. Malete said that he asked the IEC to show him where he is alleged to have signed, but was allegedly told that the documentation is confidential and that he could not see it. Malete said that he was told by Mafa Netshivhambe that only the police could help with finding out who submitted the list with his signature. Unfortunately, Malete is not the only one
who found himself in the wrong party. Andries Mojela and Winnie Shirende of Tsakane, an informal settlement outside Bela-Bela, are apparently on the list of the Ubuntu Party, a new party that has been launched ahead of the local election. “I was not told that I will be contesting the election as a ward councillor for Ward 7, and was surprised to hear that I am on the list of the Ubuntu party while I am a loyal ANC member,” said Mojela. He also approached the IEC offices to ask whether they could withdraw his name from Ubuntu’s candidate list. Unlike Malete, Ubuntu leader Keenan Alberts said that Mojela agreed to their terms and conditions and agreed to be put on the list. “I was surprised when Mojela told me that I must withdraw his name,” Alberts said. “He said that the ANC has promised him a new job, and I still have the text message he sent me.” Netshivhambe, on behalf of the IEC, said that this was an issue they had never experienced before, and said that they are not liable for people who change their minds. “At the moment the IEC is busy with the ballot papers, and whoever is on the list will be contesting the elections. Later, if the person wants to withdraw from the party, we can have a by-election and another person will replace them,” he said. The ACDP party leader could not be reached for comment on the matter of Malete.

Lizzy Bapela It was business as usual in Modimolle as residents stayed away from the Ephriam Mogale Stadium while people from different organizations gathered together to bury the late MEC for Limpopo Agriculture Joy Matshoge. Only a small number of residents attended the funeral that was held at the stadium on Saturday, 2 July. Dominating were members and leaders of the ANC and the DA from all levels, as well as members and management of the SAPS, also from all ranks. As it was expected that the stadium would be fully packed during the funeral, arrangements were made that chairs accommodate a larger number of attendees; unfortunately that was not the case. Among the few residents who troubled themselves to join those who came to pay their last respects to the MEC, they said that they were there as she was a daughter of the soil and that they did not know why the rest did not attend. The attendees told The BEAT that a funeral is a funeral regardless of who is being buried or what the issues or political state in the area may be. Some said that they
felt obliged to attend as it was a provincial state funeral and they are members of the ruling party, while others are government employees. A resident who refused to be named said that she feels that the event was only for government people and politicians, especially those in the ANC. She added that they were not made to feel part of the event as residents. In his response on behalf of the Limpopo Provincial Government, spokesperson Phuti Seloba said that as the provincial government, they are satisfied and humbled by the turn up they received during the funeral. He added that they are grateful to everybody who managed to attend and pay their last respect to the late MEC. “We understand that people have different commitments and maybe had to attend to last minute troubles so there is no problem with that. Those who could not attend obviously had good reasons so we cannot hold it against them as we are all human and are sometimes forced by reasons beyond our control to do certain things,” he said. Seloba further said that the turn out will not affect the government’s decisions to host events in the area in future.

The who’s who in politics, government, business, police, defence force and other various formations gathered at the Modimolle’s Ephriam Mogale Stadium on Saturday, 2 July to pay their last respects to the late Limpopo MEC for Agriculture Joy Matshoge. Among them were ANC heavyweights Jesse Duarte, Buti Manamela, Nathi Mthethwa, Cassel Mathale, Stan Mathabatha, Nocks Seabi and representatives from the DA. Matshoge died on Saturday, 25 June during an accident on the N1 highway between Mookgophong and Mopane, while on her way from north to Gauteng. President Jacob Zuma ordered that the national flag at all flag stations in Limpopo be flown at half-mast on the day of the funeral. The Presidency said in a statement that Matshoge will be remembered for her sterling commitment in advancing the lives of people in the province as a member of the executive council. He further conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Matshoge family and the provincial government on behalf of national government and all South Africans. Dignitaries from all walks of life flanked family members on stage as MEC for CoGHSTA in Limpopo Makoma Makhurupetje enthusiastically directed the programme during the funeral. Various speakers spoke of their experiences of working with Matshoge and expressed how her death affected them and their workplaces. The MEC was known for her involvement in programmes against the abuse of children, women, the elderly and the disabled, as well as those for the development and empowerment of women and the youth in Limpopo. Her role in many of the programmes was elaborated on during her week-long memorial services and the funeral. Members of the Women’s League came out in their numbers as they accompanied Matshoge’s body to her final place of rest in song and dance. ANC Women’s League deputy president Sisi Ntombela officially handed over Matshoge’s league blouse to her daughter Gontse, following her mother’s last wishes. Ntombela said that Matshoge asked that they do so when she is gone so that Gontse would follow in her footsteps and serve the movement with pride and dedication as she did. The grieving Gontse’s face was soaked with tears as she dressed in the blouse and heard her mother’s last wish for her. Trying to put on a strong front, Matshoge’s husband Chesane, who is a teacher at the local Phagameng High School, was very brief in his tribute to his beloved wife. His touching speech was followed by comforting songs and messages of support. Gospel singer Solly Moholo, Amadodana Ase Wesile Church Choir and the ANC Women’s League sang and danced to comfort the mourners and revive their spirits as they were celebrating the life and works of the selfless and hardworking public servant. The MEC became a topic amongst many attendees as they talk of the kind of person, cadre and leader that she was. Many said they now believe that she is gone as the coffin was lowered into her grave and tears ran down to the cheeks of her family as they said: “Rest in peace Mbokodo. You will forever be in our hearts and minds.”

The group had a teaching session with the young ones attending the event. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela Local Municipality always welcomes activities that develops or empowers young people in the area. Special Programmes Officer in the municipality David Raborolo said this during a cultural event held at Sunfa Stadium on Friday, 1 July. Raborolo added that the municipality intends to host mass participation programmes for the young ones, especially during school holidays, with the intent to curb the spread of social ills such as teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and so forth. He also said that the cultural event was held with an objective to do away with nyaope addiction, especially restricting “new clients” as he said. A group from Johannesburg named The Performing Arts and Culture Development graced Bela-Bela to teach children all about arts and culture, especially about playing the Marimba band and the African drum
named jembe. During their participation, many children appeared to be uninformed of the instruments and Raborolo said that is why the event was hosted. The provincial Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has partnered with groups to educate people of all ages about sports, arts and culture. The intension is to instil culture knowledge and humility among the people of the province, especially the young ones. In the Waterberg, Bela-Bela engaged with the Department at district level to help arrange for such an event as they saw fit, with belief that it will benefit the children. The municipality is now looking forward to hosting this year’s indigenous games, which are scheduled for Sunfa Stadium on Saturday, 23 July. This will be a district event and all local municipalities will be participating. Raborolo said that mass participation activities accommodate each and every citizen no matter their experience or capabilities unlike when hosting particular events that only accommodate people with certain skills or knowledge.
The Limpopo Office of the Premier recently announced the appointment of MEC for the Department of Economic Development and Environment and Tourism (LEDET) Seaparo Sekoati as the acting MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Premier’s Spokesperson Kenny Mathivha confirmed that MEC Sekoati will also continue with his portfolio in LEDET until such time the Premier makes his determination. The late MEC Matshoge was given a Provincial Official Funeral last Saturday in Modimolle. The funeral was attended by many community members including the leadership from political parties such as the ANC, DA and others. Ministers, mayor’s,
councillors and top leadership of the ANC Women’s League, COSATU, SADTU and others graced the funeral. MEC Sekoati previously headed the Health and Social Development portfolio also as a Member of Provincial Executive Council. With less than two months left before the nation-wide elections on Wednesday, 3 August, The BEAT is forced to clarify and adjust our policy regarding political letters. We make this decision because The BEAT is committed to being apolitical, and short before election season we are swamped with letters relating to political matters. We will, therefore, for the next two months, have to be stricter in the selection of letters. We will unfortunately not be able to place letters that: * Serve to highlight the election manifests or political aims of a specific political party * Introduce new political parties * Introduce candidates to the public * Aim to win votes or to dissuade members of the public from voting for other parties * Seek to cast suspicion on other candidates Political parties are, however, more than welcome to place advertisements in The BEAT introducing their goals, candidates, and policies to the community. A good goal for this would be a quarter page advertisement which costs R2 224 in black and white and R3 0004.80 in colour. Feel free to phone our head office at (014) 736 2723 or contact any of our advertisement representatives for queries about political advertisements. Factual letters which fall within the above guidelines may still be used. Letter writers should keep in mind, however, that letters should not be longer than 350 words, and that the editorial staff reserves the right not to use letters.

He said that he just ignores such actions and always continue with his job that he loves so much. He further said that the game was tough and every participating team wants to win but unfortunately there can only be one winner.

Speaking to The BEAT, Tshabalala said that Benny Sports Academy has shown that they can’t reach any higher in the competition. Benny’s Sports Development Academy from Louis Trichardt won the 2016 Danone Nations Cup National Championships at Boksburg on 25 June. They are the first school from the Limpopo province to take the title. They beat the North West champions, BM Mokitime Primary School, in a penalty shoot-out after a hotly contested final ended in a goalless draw. As national champions, Benny’s will
represent South Africa at the Danone Nations Cup World Finals in France from 14 to 16 October. The school’s team went into the Nationals focused, confident, quiet, and determined, according to the coach Mbishi Mokwena. “We remained focused on the task ahead,” Mokwena said. The coach said that he didn’t change anything in the run up to the nationals. “Team changes or changes in strategy can throw players this young off their stride, so we did what we normally do in the week prior to the nationals.” Benny’s were in a tough pool at the nationals. They were grouped with former national champions Barkerville Primary, but they beat them on penalties in what Mokwena described as their most difficult league game on the day. The school is on holiday at the moment, so they will have to wait a while for the real celebrations to begin, but preparations for the world finals are already under way.
