Stolen vehicles recovered Hardworking SAPS team commended Lizzy Bapela The Bela-Bela police commended their detectives’ team led by Sergeant Frans Sekgobela and the Modimolle VIS (Vehicle Investigation Service) for cracking a case involving stolen vehicles. Two cars were stolen in the Bela-Bela township in April and May, and the team has been on the suspects’ trail since, following leads on their whereabouts. The vehicles were later recovered and confiscated, with three suspects being captured following thorough investigations. Sekgobela was the main member reported to have gathered most of the information in the case and he, together with his team, managed to recover the vehicles, a green Uno in Stinkwater and a turquoise Toyota Corolla in Maubane throughout the night of Thursday, 1 June. The team then arrested one suspect in Hammanskraal on the early hours of Friday, 2 June. The VIS team also arrested the other two suspects at the same place and on the same day. All the suspects appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 5 June on a
charge of motor vehicle. The police promised to release their court outcomes shortly, together with their identities and ages. Detectives’ Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla confirmed that among the three suspects, one is reported to be
recognised them since then. Meanwhile, the owner of the Corolla, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed heartbreak and shock on arrival at the police station as he was called in to identify the vehicle.

He said two of the suspects turned state’s witness and only one is facing the charges on the stolen vehicles. It is rumoured that the suspects were using the Uno, which is believed to be why it was untouched when recovered. It is also believed that the Corolla was scrapped because one of the suspects drives a Toyota Tazz and needed the parts to fix it since it is damaged. Hammanskraal police officials came to the Bela-Bela police station after the suspects were arrested and apparently
He pleaded with The BEAT not to reveal his identity or publish the photo of the vehicle in the paper as this will bring back bad memories. “It really hurts me seeing my car like this, as if it was nothing. What the criminals did is cruel and will be hard to forget. Seeing the photo in the newspaper will be a constant reminder of what I lost,” said the owner. His father, who also came to the station to witness the ordeal, highlighted that he comes a long way with the car and has achieved a lot of things using it including building his house and business.

Learners at primary schools within the Modimolle area are targeted by the drug-free education advocates Organisation Hands On. Photo supplied Mzamane Ringane Organisation Hands On (OHO) in partnership with the Foundation for a Drug Free World www.drugfreeworld.org is spearheading the most comprehensive non-governmental drug education and prevention program of its kind, developed to fight against rapid increase in the use and abuse of drugs. The recent session was held at the local Hector Peterson Primary School on Thursday, 1 June after the initiative was kick-started with a visit at Dagbreek Primary School about three weeks ago. “There are many talks about drugs in the world — on the streets, at school, on the internet and TV. Some of it is true, some not,” said the chairperson of OHO Ronnie Makgetha. The purpose of this program is to reach young people with a drug-free message, to empower young people with factualinformation about commonly
abused drugs in their areas of residence and new researched information as drugs evolve. Makgetha said this program will help young people to know the truth about drugs and the consequences of using them, so they can make informed decisions and live drug free. “No one, especially youth and teenagers, likes to be lectured to about what he or she can or cannot do. Thus, we provide facts that empower the youth and prompt them to choose not to use drugs in the first place,” he continued. Makgetha said this program is premised on the fact that if you inform a child with the truth about drugs, they are more likely to make the correct decision about drugs and come to that decision on their own. He said the program consists of a full semester lesson-plan that learners can join, which popularizes drug-free living. “In a world awash with drugs, dealers pull no punches, and neither do we,” he concluded.
The Limpopo Provincial Task Team (PTT) of the South African Youth Council (SAYC) announced that they aim to construct a society where all young South Africans will be afforded an equal chance of growing to their full potential intellectually, socially and economically. The principles further include raising awareness on the legislative process in democracy and governance with reference to provincial youth constituencies. Boskraal started serving in the council as a Treasurer, Secretary, and Chairperson in the Thabazimbi Local Youth Council. He also served as coordinator and later secretary of the council in the Waterberg District.

Locals help clinic ‘out the dark’ Zani Hiepner The Vaalwater Clinic might not be “left in the dark” for much longer. The clinic sees approximately 6 500 patients every month and are battling to live up to their expectations due to the lack of maintenance, The Post previously reported. According to Mayor Marlene van Staden, windows need glass, nurses need training, and maintenance needs to be done. Doctors working at the clinic have insufficient electric lights in their consulting rooms and patients who need to visit the clinic during the night have arrived to
darkness. After Van Staden’s recent visit, she managed to arrange the support of local electricians and suppliers to fix the so called darkness. Two local electrical companies of Vaalwater and Modimolle spent almost three days at the premises to fix the lighting. Broken globes were replaced and new lights were installed inside and outside the clinic, making it easier for patients arriving at night and for doctors to consult. “Thank you so much for taking the time to supply and fix the much needed lighting issues at the clinic,” Annemarie Van Zyl, clinic manager, said.

Albert Luthuli Primary represents the province
“We have been knocked out at the cluster level for the past several years, and we are delighted to be moving on to the national level,” he said. The children will be put up in a luxury hotel the night before the big event. “It is not going to be easy,” Masemene said. “All the choirs will be coming out to win this big round, but we are going to work harder for it.” The competition is sponsored by the Motsepe Foundation.
TK Mashaba Albert Luthuli Primary School at Bela-Bela will be representing Limpopo in a national schools choir competition in July. Learners fire up during debate battle
The Working on Fire Limpopo team celebrated the learners’ victory through songs and dance. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Working on Fire (WOF) Limpopo successfully launched their fire awareness campaign at two primary schools in the Waterberg District with a school debate competition. Grade 7 learners from BelaBela’s Mmamakwa Full Service School and Northam’s Mokgalakwane took part in this worthy educational challenge. Learners from both schools, with the help of their teachers, showed a high level of knowledge about wildfires during the debate. The programme’s spokesperson Matema Gwangwa said they decided to launch this campaign in the Waterberg as it is one of the areas that is recording a high number of veld fires during the winter fire season. She added that with the help of the Fire Awareness Training Officer Penny Phukubye they managed to have a successful debate with participating learners who were fully prepared. “Our firefighters from Northam and Sondela worked around the clock, running fire awareness presentations at the schools to equip the learners with knowledge about
the impacts of fires. All these presentations were CAPS (Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement) aligned, to ensure that they do not contradict with the syllabus of the learners at the school,” said Gwangwa. One of Mmamakwa School’s teachers, Gloria Ntshangase, said it means a lot to them as teachers that their learners were given a chance to demonstrate their talent in debate. She added that this was their first exposure to a competition such as this one. “Through this debate, we were able to identify the educational gaps among our learners, and this will help us in working on the programme to improve on their skills,” said Ntshangase. The Grade 7 learners from both schools debated about the climate change and wildfires, where they highlighted the impacts of wildfires as well as the measures that should be taken in order to protect the environment. After a tough battle of the debaters, two learners from Mmamakwa emerged victorious. Motlatsi Dlamini obtained position 2, while Matshidiso Moraka obtained position 1 and they were both over the moon about their achievements.

The MEC said this during the Limpopo Provincial Archives Week celebration, which was held at the Bela-Bela MultiPurpose Centre on Tuesday, 23 May. The Waterberg District hosted role players in the sports, arts and culture industry from across the province as they gathered for the event that was held under the theme “Promoting Youth Education”. Political leaders from across the district also graced the event. Outlining the purpose of the event, BelaBela PR Councillor Joseph Makhubela indicated that the department’s objective for hosting the event was to encourage communities to archive relevant information now, know their history and be informed of their future. Departmental spokesperson Kola Maila said the Provincial Archives Week offers an opportunity to communities to learn about the importance of preserving documented
history in order to understand and appreciate its impact in the daily lives of communities. He added that the awareness campaign initiative is aimed at making information users, including schoolchildren and communities at large, aware of the existence of Limpopo Provincial Archives and its function in preserving the province’s heritage. Maila further said leaners will be introduced to the archives and records management career paths and opportunities available in the sector. In her speech, Moloi indicated that the way technology is advancing, keeping records of documented information is easier than ever before. “When we talk about our family’s history or origins, can generations to come find that information documented and archived?” Moloi said. She advised communities to celebrate Africa Day and the rest of the month by dressing in traditional attire, eating traditional food and playing traditional music even though they will not make it to the government’s official event. She added that this will remind us that being African means a lot.

Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela’s beauty queen Tshegofatso Mogashoa is aiming for bigger tittles in the beauty pageants industry from this year, after she won several highly acclaimed titles. She is currently the Miss Bosveld Queen, a title that she obtained in May 2017. Mogashoa also holds a number of other titles including the Miss Limpopo Teen finalist from 2016, where she emerged as Second Princess in the pageant in December. She was also crowned Miss Bela-Bela Teen in August 2016, and finalist in the Miss SA Teen and Pre-Teen International pageants. The young queen’s first pageant competition was in 2015, when she was crowned
First Princess in the Miss BelaBela pageant and Miss Hoërskool Junior a few days later. She told The BEAT that after this achievement, she developed a love for pageants and decided to give it her best shot. “I was skinny and dark during my primary school years and did not feel like I was beautiful. At the time, I had friends with light completion skins and voluptuous bodies and that resulted in me having low selfesteem. I believed that beauty pageants will determine my beauty and boost my confidence and they indeed made me feel beautiful and proud of who I am,” said Mogashoa. She is the daughter to primary school principal Julia and teacher Lucas and both her parents are very proud of her.

Members of the Warmbaths Taxi Association (WATA) rallied their support behind their current chairperson, Peter Mogale. The news has been the talk of the taxi rank recently, as the members expressed their support to Mogale for all the things that he has done throughout his term of office. During an interview with The BEAT, Rank Manager Sunday Modike, representing all the drivers who support Mogale, said the leader did a lot in the two terms that he chaired the association. Modike said Mogale helped drivers, including himself, to become owners and to obtain proper documents permitting them to operate legally within the association and their jurisdiction. Modike is also the provincial chairperson of the Taxi Drivers’ Association. “As a new owner, I am more than grateful for being one of the people
he helped. Mogale also saw to it that routes that did not have permits also obtained them. He was not just occupying the chairmanship just to misuse the association’s funds as unnecessary and misleading rumours are spreading. We wish for him to go for a third term so he can continue the good work that he is doing,” said Modike. Mogale’s supporters said candidates contesting in the executive committee must be feeling the pressure already. They further said they believe WATA is the best association in Limpopo and countrywide and have achieved more than all the associations due to the work that Mogale and his team did under his leadership. Mogale is currently leading an executive committee of 10 members consisting of Deputy Chairman Kefilwe Mosime, Secretary Connie Pholosi, Deputy Colly Rangoako, Treasurer Mike Molele, Disciplinary Committee Representative Jomo Ramolotja,
Public Relations Officer Israel Molusi, Training Officer Musa Mashugu,Operational Manager Anthony Sebelebele, and Grievances Officer Jacob Monwametsi, WATA held a farewell celebration for the current and outgoing executive committee at the town taxi rank on Saturday, 27 May. Mogale told The BEAT that he is not canvassing for votes for the position but welcomes and is grateful for the support that the members are showing with regards to his leadership. He also thanked members of the community and the entre rank staff for the support throughout his two terms of office. “I am truly grateful and humble with the warmth and kindness that the members and the community at large have given me all these years. I am also grateful and thankful to our local newspaper, The BEAT for always publishing positive reports about our association and attending our activities,” he said.

Representative of various churches came in numbers to attend the meeting. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Leaders from various churches in Modimolle have expressed that many churches in the area are still having challenges acquiring stands for their establishments. The church leaders gathered at the newly-built library premises at the Phagameng township, on Wednesday, 31 May. It was agreed that the Phagameng Ministers’ Fraternal will engage the local municipality on the issue of stands. Speaker after speaker expressed that it would be difficult for churches as non-profitable organisations to acquire stands, under a current system where church stands are being auctioned.
The ministers fraternal resolved that there will be discussions between the church representatives and the municipality, where a plea will be made for church stands to be donated rather than being sold. As part of the meeting’s purpose, the fraternal invited all the local churches to come and confirm their registration, to ensure that the updated database consists of all churches based in Modimolle. Phagameng Ministers Fraternal chairperson Malesela Mosima was delighted with the turnout at this meeting. “The turnout was bigger than we had anticipated. People came in numbers and the participation was competitive,” he said. Social worker Tshwantsho Matshabi and social auxiliary

The recently elected executive committee and other members of the Waterberg District’ Sports Confederation aims for development. Photo supplied Lizzy Bapela A new sports confederation executive committee was recently elected in the Waterberg District, and the committee has already set out their goals for their term of office. The committee expressed gratitude towards the members at large for affording them as a collective the responsibility of shaping the sports development in the district. This vision statement was rolled out during the confederation’s annual general meeting that was held at the Waterberg District Municipality’s boardroom foyer on Saturday, 27 May. The gathering consisted of men and women who actively engage in programmes that are aimed at creating platforms for athletes to perform without any hindrance. It was emphasized during the meeting that sports remain the most influential tool towards building cohesive societies and also remains the superglue that can be used towards the promotion of positive living. The committee agreed to collectively strive to identify the character of Waterberg when it comes to sports. This was agreed upon due to the fact that Waterberg remains a hub full of massive capable talented human resource.

The confederation’s the recently elected president Ally Pole said in his address that having led the sporting fraternity of the district for the period under review, it is significant that they use the opportunity of the meeting towards the acceleration of sporting excellence in the district. He added that the Waterberg has rich raw talent that needs to be uncompromisingly nurtured to reach its full potential. Pole further indicated that for the period he had to represent the sports fraternity in the AIDS Council, and his involvement in such structures exposes him to challenges that athletes continue to face. It has been noted that Bela-Bela is doing well in terms of prevention of mother to child transmission because of the awareness programmes that the government is initiating. By far, Modimolle and Bela-Bela appear to have strong AIDS Councils which require athletes’ active participation at grassroot level. The recently elected committee consists of President Pole from the handball code, First Deputy President Refiloe Mojela from recreation, Second Deputy President Phuti Kgomo from softball, Secretary Mike Makhubela from Volleyball, Deputy Secretary Freddy Chisi from Rugby, and Treasurer John Mnthunzini from soccer.
Aloes beat Baobabs in penultimate match TK Mashaba The Baobabs, the best-improving team in the BFNPL this year, held a slender 24-22 lead going into the third quarter, but started to make a number of crucial, match-turning mistakes under pressure at Bloemfontein, 27 May. Baobabs which has our golden lady Grace Lechaba from Bela-Bela’s Diesel n Dust Netball, quickly fell behind and within a matter of five minutes the match was lost, trailing by nine goals towards the end of the quarter. The Aloes won the encounter, played in the Mangaung Indoor Complex in Bloemfontein, by 51-44 to snatch the sixth spot on the log, which earned them a quarterfinal spot next weekend. The Aloes in return kept their cool and manage to turn over position in the Baobabs attacking third, thanks to goal defence Nobubele Phuza and goalkeeper Bongisa
Wete. Experienced shooter Noluvuyo Nodludlume slotted her goals for the Aloes when it counted most and her fellow shooter, Nolusindiso Twani who was chosen for the Baby Proteas on Friday 26 May, ably supported her. The Aloes had to battle without their three Proteas, captain Nosiphiwo Goda, LaurenLee Christians and Jeanie Steyn as well as Arné Rust. Melodine Jacobs, also in the Baby Proteas team for the Youth World Champs in July, is still injured. The Baobabs will be involved in a play-out next weekend to determine the final positions 7 to 10. They will first be up against the Sunbirds. The Aloes will be up against the Guateng Golden Fireballs, North West Flames or the Southern Stings, depending on the result between the Flames and Stings in the final match.

He added that the agency and the media will also share their experiences including frustrations and concerns with regards to the LTA. “The event will also be used as a platform for the board and CEO to make known their plans for the new financial year. The CEO will also unveil the calendar of events for the rest of the year 2017 and to get to know media in the province,” said Kgatla. The tour is being organized as part of the preparations for the African Cup of Nations, which will take place in Zimbabwe. The players’ coach said this is an excellent opportunity for his team. “This has proven that our team has improved so much over the past years,” he said.
