Vietnam - Overview

Vietnam has often lagged behind the rest of the Asian economic giants but over the last few years development has reached a frenetic pace with new hotels and office buildings springing up everywhere. The development of golf has been just as extraordinary with around 20 golf courses already open and as many as another 30 at some stage of planning or construction. Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is built astride the Red River Delta in the central part of North Vietnam. It still retains some of its French colonial charm but this is rapidly disappearing as the economy develops. Further south, the small and quiet city of Hue sits beside the Perfumed River and is renowned for its numerous pagodas and temples, citadels and Royal tombs. Perhaps the biggest change can be seen in Saigon, today called Ho Chi Minh City which is the economic powerhouse of Vietnam. New hotels, shopping centers and housing developments are under construction everywhere. The renowned French colonial hill station of Dalat is delightful and offers a wonderful escape from the heat and humidity of the cities and coastal areas and its lakes and pine trees give it a distinctly alpine feeling. It is also home to Dalat Palace Golf Club - the only course in Asia which uses bent grass on the greens similar to the courses in Western Europe. Finally, the seaside resorts of Phan Thiet and Vung Tau, about three hours north of Saigon, each boast one or two top resort golf courses. Last year Vietnam was chosen as the "Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year" by the International Association of Golf Travel Operators (IAGTO) and rightly so as it now its offers a fantastic choice of golf courses designed by some of the most famous names in golf. In future years Vietnam will be providing stiff competition for Thailand when it comes to golf tours in the Far East.

The Best Time To Play Golf in Vietnam

Vietnam is a vast country stretching south to north so there are great variations in the weather patterns. The advantage of this is that you can find good weather somewhere in the country most of the year round as when one region is cold and wet another is dry and hot. North Vietnam Between November and April it is cold and damp with temperatures falling to around 15°C. The summer falls between May to October and the weather is generally hot and dry. The best time to visit the north is from September to December when the weather is less humid. South Vietnam This is a mainly tropical climate so it’s pretty hot and humid most of the year and the rains come between May & November with the highest rainfall between June & August. The south is at its hottest from February to the end of May and the ideal time to visit is from December to April although you are pretty safe to come up until the end of June when the really wet weather starts. Central Vietnam This part of Vietnam experiences a mixture of weather. The coastal regions are mainly dry from May to October and get most of their rain from December to February with the odd typhoon in late summer. The highlands are very cold in winter with temperatures near freezing. An ideal time to come is from December to March. If you want to cover all of Vietnam then the perfect time to visit is either from September to December or during March and April.

Hanoi

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is built astride the Red River Delta in the central part of North Vietnam. Despite the rapid development that is taking place everywhere, Hanoi still has many reminders of its French colonial past although the language is dying out. Many parts of the old city have been preserved and the network of streets in the Old Quarter remain relatively untouched. Three are countless numbers of pagodas, several lakes and parks which are a magnet for the local population who gather there each evening and at weekends. Other noteworthy attractions include Vietnam’s first University, the Temple of Literature, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the One-Pillar Pagoda and Ngoc Son Temple. There are around 10 courses in the Hanoi area including four of championship standard.

Hanoi Golf Courses

King's Island Golf Club - One of the most scenic courses in Hanoi situated alongside Dong Mo Lake about 36 km west of Hanoi and the final access to the course is by boat. There are 36 holes - The Lakeside Course which opened in 1993 and the more recent Mountain View Course which opened in 2004. A very picturesque setting with water hazards dominating the Lakeside course whilst the Mountain View uses the natural terrain and has more trees. Excellent clubhouse with restaurant and other facilities include pro shop and practice facilities. Chi Linh Star Golf and Country Club - Set in a beautiful valley beside a lake this is a superb facility offering two 18-hole golf courses, a 5-star hotel and a wide range of sporting and recreational facilities. The hilltop club house has panoramic views over the very well maintained fairways, slick greens, strategically–placed bunkers and the huge lake and undulating hills. This is probably the best club in North Vietnam. Tam Dao Golf and Resort - An 18 hole championship golf course and resort situated in the mountain region of Tam Dao about 70 kilometers from Hanoi. The course is very well managed and maintained and meanders through the countryside with fantastic views all around. There are plenty of water hazards and well positioned bunkers to catch the wayward shot but golfers of all standards should enjoy this course. Other facilities included a swimming pool, tennis courts, massage, hairdressing salon and conference facilities with accommodation.

Hanoi Golf Courses

Van Tri Golf Club - is a private members club very close to the centre of Hanoi and is an immaculately maintained golf course with water hazards on nearly every hole and some narrow fairways. The club house amenities include an excellent restaurant, sumptuous changing facilities with Spa and Jacuzzi.

Ho Chi Minh

Formerly known as Saigon, today’s Ho Chi Minh City is the thriving economic centre of the South and one of the fastest developing cities in the world. Everywhere you look new hotels, office blocks and modern shopping centres are springing up but the old Saigon still exists and you can find narrow alleyways, markets full of local produce and ancient temples just around the corner. In common with many developing cities, the traffic is chaos and dominated by literally thousands of motorbikes which makes even crossing the street an adventure. Ho Chi Minh has it all - from outstanding international restaurants, the finest hotels, street eating places and smaller guesthouses and is reminiscent of many other Asian cities before their modernization. In this area are some of the best golf courses but some patience is required as the traffic can be very bad and you should allow at least one hour to reach most courses.

Ho Chi Minh Hotels

New World Hotel, Ho Chi Minh

A very large and impressive 5-star hotel located very close to the centre of the city and within walking distance of most of the attractions. The elegantly designed rooms are finished in contemporary style with floor to ceiling windows offering views over the city or the nearby park. The Dynasty restaurant serves some of the best Chinese cuisine in the city and the Parkview offers international and Asian favourites. The extensive fitness centre offers a well-equipped gym, swimming pool and tennis court. .

Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers Conveniently located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, the 470 spacious and comfortable hotel rooms offer all the style and comfort you would expect. There are no less than eight restaurants and bars and the outdoor wine bar on level 23 is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the views over the city. Other facilities include a large pool, fitness centre and the Aqua Day Spa

Ho Chi Minh Golf Courses

Long Thanh Golf Club - One of the best courses in the area located about 40 minutes from downtown Ho Chi Minh with two 18-hole layouts. The course is in immaculate condition and most holes are lined with palm trees. The elevated parts of the course offer fabulous views over the surrounding countryside. There are plenty of water hazards and the greens can be fast and tough to read – rough is quite forgiving. A very plush clubhouse with a well stocked pro shop and excellent restaurant. Dong Nai Golf Resort - Although nearly 50 kms from the city this 27-hole golf course is well worth a visit as it is set in stunning scenery alongside a 1,000-hectare natural lake which comes into play on most of the holes. The course offers great variety and every hole requires some careful shot making. The golf course is a combination of three 9-hole courses - from the black tees each course measures about 3,500 yards with a par of 36. Other activities include horseback riding, fishing, spa, sauna and massage facilities, and several restaurants. Vietnam Golf & Country Club - One of the more popular courses in the area partly because it is only 20 kilometers from the centre of city and the closest golf club to Ho Chi Minh. There are two 36-hole courses which wind through the natural forest and the layout looks very natural. The East course which was designed by Lee Trevino is more open but the water hazards and undulating greens combined with the strategically placed bunkers make it an interesting challenge. Excellent clubhouse and facilities but the course can get crowded- especially at weekends.

Ho Chi Minh Golf Courses

Song Be Golf Resort - One of the first championship golf courses in Vietnam and still recognized as one of the most challenging. There are no less than ten lakes and water comes into play on almost half the holes and sometimes there is water on both sides of the fairway. Added to this are the numerous mature trees which line most fairways and fast, undulating greens which make this golf course very difficult. You can either walk or take a cart. The course has a fully equipped and modern club house with excellent facilities and great views. .

Vung Tau and Phan Thiet

Vung Tau known by the French as Cap St Jacques is the most accessible beach resort from Ho Chi Minh about 128km or a 3-hour drive from the city. Not the most attractive of destinations as it’s the centre of the local oil business which means that the view from the beach is blighted by oil tankers and at the weekend it can get very busy as locals descend on the resort from the city. The only reason to go there is to play golf at the Paradise Golf Resort. Phan Thiet is most famous in Vietnam for producing fish sauce and has a colorful history. During colonial times the French lived along one side of the Phan Thiet River, while the Vietnamese, Chinese, Malays and Indonesians lived along the other side. There is a small but busy fishing harbour and some good beaches but the main attraction of Phan Thiet are the two superb golf courses.

Vung Tau and Phan Thiet Golf Courses

Paradise Golf Resort , Vungtau - This was Vietnam’s first seaside course and was extensively renovated and upgraded in 2004 and now offers 27 holes of excellent golf. The course offers plenty of variety and offers great ocean views from some tees. At times it has a links feeling and the sea breeze also adds to this impression. Other facilities include a fully equipped club house, tennis courts and a wide variety of water sports. Sea Links Golf Club, Phan Thiet - A very spectacular and challenging golf course, built on white sand dunes and playing 7700 yards from the black tees. The wind which blows most of the time, added to the roller-coaster fairways, deep bunkers and the strategically placed water hazards makes this a tough challenge especially from the Blue or Black tees. A large club house with excellent facilities. Ocean Dunes Golf Club , Phan Thiet - Located 200 kilometers northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, this Nick Faldo designed, 6746-yard par 72 course is a delightful links style resort course which is very playable and will be enjoyed by golfers of all standards. Following the natural shape of the dunes the course feels like it’s been there forever and the sea breezes, the water hazards and some narrow tree-lined fairways make it an interesting challenge. A small clubhouse but the facilities of the Novotel are nearby.

Central Highlands - Dalat

Often known as the City of Eternal Spring, Dalat’s temperature varies between 15°C to 24°C and has an ambience quite unlike anywhere else in Vietnam and at times you feel as though you are in the French Alps. This impression is reinforced by the Eiffel Tower shaped radio mast. The surrounding countryside is charming and is littered with lakes, waterfalls, forests and gardens full of flowering plants usually only found in Europe. The city’s population numbers as many as thirty different hill tribes and you can occasionally spot them in traditional dress in the local markets. Dalat Palace Golf Club It is also home to one of the best and most unique golf courses in Asia – the Dalat Palace Golf Club, which also provides one of the most enjoyable golf experiences in Vietnam. The course is quite hilly and is interspersed with several lakes which criss-cross the fairways and often force you to play up. Most of the fairways are wide and the greens are quite large and what is even more unusual is that the course is planted with bent grass tees, fairways and greens similar to that used in Europe. The course is covered with colorful plants and shrubs which add to this unique playing experience.

Danang, Central Vietnam

The economic hub of central Vietnam, it has the vitality of a bigger city with some great restaurants and beautiful beaches and it is also close to Hue and Hoi An if you wish to explore further. Danang is at the northern limits of Vietnam’s tropical zone and enjoys a very pleasant climate all year round. The Montgomerie Links - Danang When Colin Montgomerie designs a course he likes to use the natural characteristics of the land as much as possible and this course has the great advantage of having some wonderful natural features. The sandy soil and the nearby dunes together with the local vegetation provide the canvas on which he has built a fantastic links style layout. The prevailing winds make club selection a challenge and the well placed fairways bunkers are there to catch any wayward tee shots. A brand new club house has all modern facilities and two excellent restaurants. The Golf Academy provides the very latest electronic teaching aids and practice facilities to improve your game.

Danang Golf Club- was designed by Greg Norman and it has been built very close to China beach and offers a layout which is reminiscent of some Scottish courses with some unique touches. The tree-lined fairways are reasonably wide and there is not too much water but careful shot placement is essential to have a chance of attacking the pins on the undulating greens. When the wind blows as it does often in this part of Vietnam, the course becomes considerably more difficult.

Golf Tips

Dress Code: Courses in Asia are not usually overzealous about clothing but to be safe wear shirts with collars and ensure you have the proper footwear with rubber spikes.

Caddies: You will have a pay a caddie’s fee at all courses and you will be expected to pay a tip in cash direct to the caddie. It’s entirely up to you but US$10-15 is usual practice depending on the service you receive. If you are really unhappy with the caddie please note the number and advise us.

Sun Protection: Please ensure you use sufficient sun block to protect yourself against the very strong sun in Thailand. The best protection is to use your umbrella as a sunshade. It’s also possible to hire a second caddie to hold the umbrella.

Dehydration: In warm or humid conditions you may need to drink more than usual to continue to ensure your body functions properly. It is advisable to drink some water before you start playing to ensure that your body is properly hydrated at all times. If you are feeling thirsty, that is a sure sign that your body has already lost too much liquid and you should take a drink immediately. All courses have regular drinks kiosks so please use them.

Golf Tips

Change of Clothes: All courses have well-equipped locker rooms so you can shower and change after your game so remember to take a change of clothes with you. Lockers are free of charge, but do not leave anything valuable inside – also it is customary to give a small tip to the attendant.

Golf Carts: Some courses are walking only and do not allow golf carts and at the courses that do permit them they may not be available during busy periods so please ensure that you request one in advance. Also it’s strictly one cart per person at most courses and depending on the weather you may have to stay on the cart path.

Non-Golfing Guests: If you want to bring a non-playing companion on the course please check with us first as not all courses allow this and they may also make a charge.

Equipment: You can hire clubs, shoes and umbrellas at most courses although the standards do vary and it may not always be the latest equipment.
