Bangkok, 20 June 2010 Dear Reader, There has been widespread media coverage of the recent upheaval in Bangkok, leading many observers to question whether it is safe to travel to Thailand. It is important to bear in mind that the demonstrations happened in a very small section of Bangkok, albeit a high profile area, which I happen to live in. At no time did I feel threatened or intimidated by the protestors; in fact they went out of their way to be especially friendly to foreigners. As in any country where there are conflicts, common sense tells you to keep away from potential flashpoints. In our view, it is perfectly safe to visit Thailand and take advantage of the numerous special offers being promoted to stimulate travel to this wonderful country which has so many rich experiences for visitors. As Diethelm Travel, we are committed to servicing our partners needs 24 hours a day. We continue to look for innovative ways to improve our service, while remaining committed to always moving forward. Our mission is to meet and strive to exceed the expectations of our customers and partners. Sincerely yours,

Richard R. Brouwer Chief Operating Officer Diethelm Travel Group

Bangkok, known to Thais as ―Krung Thep‖ (the City of Angels) is a truly exciting and colourful destination. This amazing city has something to offer everyone and provides a unique experience to all who visit. Like most cities, there are several recommended areas to stay, but for peace and relaxation, the riverside is the place to be. At the heart of historic Bangkok and where many of the magical temples and attractions are located, you will find landmarks such as the Grand Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) and the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun) on your doorstep.

Opting for a more modern area, Sukhumvit offers upcoming and trendy places to stay. There are plenty of urbane and sophisticated bars and restaurants to keep you entertained and what this area may lack in spiritual attractions it makes up for in shopping and entertainment venues. Being the longest road in Thailand, there is a never ending supply of both local and cosmopolitan restaurants with somewhere new and different to try around every corner where you will typically mix with the new breed of fashionable (hi-so) Thais. Hours can be spent exploring this area including alternative attractions such as the Thailand Creative & Design Centre, Asia's first design learning and resource facility, established to foster the country's creativity and inspire innovative ideas among design professionals and entrepreneurs. For a more traditional insight, visit Kamthieng House, a stilted rice farmer’s teak house transported from Chiang Mai to Bangkok in 1964. With a collection of everyday agricultural and domestic items, this depicts the traditional lives of ordinary local people. Other attractions include Benjasiri Park if you’re looking for respite from a day’s shopping and for families a visit to the Museum of Science & Planetarium should not be missed.

B a n g k o k

Going back to Basics Bangkok provides some of the most amazing historical palaces and temples which should not be missed including the unforgettable Grand Palace and Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). The riverside provides much of the historical essence of the city and with an evening dinner cruise one can gain a truly memorable experience. Bangkok also has attractions to offer the more adventurous traveller and those looking for something a little different. One option is to take a cycling trip to the jungle area of Bang Kra Jao, located a short distance from bustling Sukhumvit. This extraordinary place can only be reached by boat as no bridges span this part of the river. It is home to many local communities which have maintained a traditional lifestyle that can be seen firsthand on this trip. Alternatively, just 20 kms north of the city along the Chao Praya River lies the island of Koh Kret. It’s definitely another world in comparison to Bangkok despite the close vicinity and retains much of its rustic village charms. Here one can see the famous craftsmanship of the local Mon people and witness their skills in pottery. No cars are allowed on the island so this is a great opportunity to take your time and interact with the local villages. For those looking for a bargain, head to Pratunam, MBK, China Town, Chatuchak Weekend Market and Suan Lum Night Bazaar, which are some of the best markets available in Bangkok. Wondering around these exotic markets also offers a great experience even if you’re not looking to purchase any goods!

Family Style School holiday are approaching and for those who have not yet planned, we have some great ideas. Beginning in Singapore with its world renowned day and night zoos and Sentosa dolphins or KL’s Jurong bird park, fly direct to the heart of Borneo for some serious family adventure. Sabah (KK) and Sarawak (Kuching) can offer pristine beaches and snorkeling, overnight stays in tribal longhouses, rainforest walks, wildlife experiences and close encounters with the cute and wonderfully amusing orang-utan in a sanctuary. Retail Therapy If you think, you may miss the retail therapy of Thailand, do not worry. Away from impersonalized malls, our personal favorites for shopping around the region are Hanoi, Colombo and Ho Chi Minh.

Southeast Asia Lying east of India and south of China, Southeast Asia comprises of the former French colonies of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam along with Myanmar (formerly Burma and part of British India until 1937) as well as Malaysia & Thailand. This vast area has a wealth to offer. Due to increasing access to these destinations, new and exciting holiday options are arising either as country combinations or as individual destinations in themselves. Previously very reliant on Thailand and flights to Thailand, the surrounding countries are now increasingly easier to reach by long-haul flight direct, or with a stop-over in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. We have researched some airline schedules for you and include a detailed list of flights direct from Europe or South Africa into Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Laos. There are many other possibilities, but we trust that this document shows that Southeast Asia is increasingly accessible!

Vietnam Journey Vietnam is an assault on the senses yet travelling through the country is a delight with more than enough to keep you occupied for 2 to 3 weeks. The cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are both chaotic and captivating but if you prefer to enjoy the countryside and beaches, head for the central region which has plenty to offer. If the sound of surf, scenic outlying islands and exotic seafood beckon, then spend a couple of days on the beaches at Nha Trang before continuing north to the ancient trading port of Hoi An and the ancient Imperial capital of Hue. Feel like some exercise in-between relaxing on Hoi An’s beaches, then optionally join in a leisurely 4 days cycling tour through the bucolic paddy fields and villages around Hoi An, a stretch along the stunning coastline past fishing villages to Cua Dai beach and peddling round the Royal citadel in Hue. The tour ends in Hanoi with its vibrant Old Quarter and city in October 2010 is celebrating a 1000 year anniversary!

Myanmar Waterways Without doubt the best kept secret in Asia, Myanmar is enchanting country never failing to charm those who visit. The centre around Bagan and Mandalay receives far less rainfall than the rest of the country and so Jul-Sept is a wonderful time to visit if you love fewer tourists, lush green scenery and a magical light. Accessed directly from Singapore and KL, Yangon remains unchanged over the years with magnificent colonial buildings, tropical parks and lakes, colourful markets, golden pagodas and spectacularly dominating everything is the truly captivating Shwedagon Pagoda. Next stop is Bagan, one of the richest archaeological and historical sites in Asia, with more than 2,000 pagodas and temples set in a vast plain beside the legendary Ayeyarwaddy River. After exploring the temples by car, bicycle or horse drawn carriage, embark on a memorable 1 night cruise onboard a comfortable boat down the Ayeyarwaddy River to Mandalay. Mandalay, the last Royal capital is the cultural heart of Myanmar and where inside the monasteries, it is still possible to see claret robbed monks line up with their lacquer bowls receiving alms.

Laos and neighboring heritage highlights

For those who do not like the idea of a fly and flop holiday but enjoy discovering world heritage monuments, dramatic scenery and the lay back café culture of Indo-Chine, this tour will surely appeal. Starting in Hanoi, drive to Halong Bay for an overnight boat journey in this area of outstanding natural beauty. Halong meaning ―dragon descending to the sea‖ in Vietnamese is an unbelievably picturesque bay of more than 3,000 limestone islets rising from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Opportunities for swimming, kayaking or learning taichi are offered as well sublime seafood. Returning to Hanoi, a short flight brings you to Luang Prabang in Laos. Isolated for centuries from the rest of SE Asia, this former royal capital encircled by mountains and lying at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan River, is heady mix of shimmering gold temple roofs, crumbling French colonial architecture, lines of alms collecting saffron robbed monks and Hmong tribal people shopping in local markets. Needing no introduction as a world heritage site, the ruins of the ancient city of Angkor, capital of the Khmer kingdom from 802 until 1295 A.D. are undoubtedly one of the world's greatest marvels.

Hidden Treasures of Kota Kinabalu

The island of Borneo is well-known for it’s rich tribal cultures and biodiversity, which this trip tries to display. We arrive in Kota Kinabalu, in the province of Sabah - a city rebuilt after the second World War. Discover the city and it’s history with a guided walking tour. A visit to the Mari Mari cultural village gives a good insight to Sabah’s Indiginous Tribes’ culture, art and architecture. We continue to the Klias Wetlands and visit the mangrove forest in search of it’s odd nosed inhabitant: the Proboscis Monkey. A trip to Gaya Island – the largest marine park of Sabah, makes this Borneo trip complete. After a trek through lush tropical forest, there is time for swimming and snorkeling . And if you wish to stay longer – there are plenty opportunities to add on a stay on one of the beautiful beaches in the area.

Sri Lanka Marco Polo described Sri Lanka as "the finest island of its size in the world". We also agree and think that no other country in the world can offer such an incredible variety of simply everything; the island truly has something to offer to everyone. In a short but action packed 6 day tour it is possible to drop in at an elephant orphanage, go bird-watching or spot a leopard on a wildlife safari, visit incredible world heritage sites of rock fortresses, Buddhist cave paintings and ancient capitals, take a train through the extremely picturesque hill country and tea plantations, enjoy pilgrimage sites and botanical gardens, wander around a living fortified city and city bazaars, see mythical sites, relax on wonderful pristine beaches and eat exotic cuisine. With their infectious smiles and willingness to please, the Sri Lankans make perfect hosts. In addition to our extremely comprehensive 6 day tour, we are pleased to offer a shorter 4 day tour centered around the north and central part of the island for those with less time.
