2020

ACdO is the platform from which the Studio Álvaro Catalán de Ocón produces and distributes some of its most personal pieces. For us, this close relationship between designing and making gives us the freedom to experiment and try out new projects, which otherwise would be difficult to develop within the constraints of a client commission. In each new project, the design process is geared to guarantee maximum honesty of processes and materials in order to offer not just an object but a collection of stories and sensations. All of our pieces are produced glocally, using high-end local industrial processes and worldwide specialized crafts by the best artisans. They are then assembled with great care in the studio to offer the quality and finish we demand in order to create a long lasting collection of products.

Ceramics Cu Vase

Ceramics Cu, is a collection of pieces created in ceramics, copper and silica with an innovative technique where, as a sort of alchemy, each piece is transformed into a new object in which colors and lines that ornate it emerges in an absolutely unique way through the firing process. Basketry and ceramics are one of the world’s oldest handicrafts, there are vestiges of pieces of pottery of the Neolithic Age showing that the clay had been molded round a basket structure, that show the interrelation between those new crafts. In this new project we wanted to return to those first experiments that mix different craft techniques. As a way of a contemporary analogy, we applied a mesh fabric that will leave its mark on the ceramic when fired, marking the vases with mechanical drawings from the industrial process of the fabric production. In this way, abstract patterns are generated, that when applied to the ceramic and after the firing process, leave a pattern between chaos and order. In addition, silica turns ceramic impermeable while becoming deep green in contact with the copper. At the special edition, the copper is applied using a circular weaving textile machine especially modified to be able to weave using variables of height, turn, speed, thickness of copper wire and type of knot. In this way we achieved the serial production of unique pieces with a high degree of ornamentation, presenting the possibilities of drawing generated through mechanical instructions and electricity. Terrazzo Alhambra Table + Vase + Bowl

The collection of objects shaped in the Alhambra terrazzo emerges with the aim of exploring pure geometrical forms- the circle and the triangle- and turning this terrazzo into a characteristic material of our studio. The beauty and practicality of waste is represented through the use of the unusual combination of materials: glass bottles, marble, cement and coloured resin. This opening series of items comprises different models of tables, fruit bowls and vases. Their round, gentle sections are in contrast with the severity and hardness of the sharp edges. Nara 2.0 stays true to the original design of Nara iconic table by Shiro Kuramata, though its material composition is different. The use of unbroken bottles brings to light unusual drawings, depending on the applied cuttings. The accuracy of the industrial processes used to reveal the table “hidden” inside the terrazzo block contrasts with the apparent randomness of the achieved sections. Inspired by the world of colours of the fruits and flowers, the different versions of bowls and vases reveal a joyful contrast between the vividly coloured terrazzo inside the bottles and the white mass of the rest of the block. Generously sized, the objects play with the pure geometrical volumes, inviting the user to interact with a tactile and sensual material. The striking spots penetrate through the product and rise to the visible surface. By taking a closer look to the outline of the spots, one can imagine what remains hidden to the naked eye. Riad Table

Riad table is an enhancement of the traditional manufacturing process and graphic motifs of hydraulic tiles. These concrete tiles emerged in Mediterranean Europe in the early 20th century as an industrial response to old mosaic floors. The drawings of Riad are inspired by traditional designs that can be found from the Alhambra of Granada to the Great Mosque of Damascus. The idea behind this product is to decontextualise a construction material –the hydraulic tile– by isolating and objectifying it. Great part of the designing process lies in resolving what is not visible to the naked eye. Therefore it has been necessary to research more technical materials to lighten, reinforce and resize the product, as well as to intervene in its traditional manufacturing process in order to accurately place a metalic piece which works as a node to reinforce the object and, at the same time, to position the legs in perfect geometry. The result is a table for indoor and outdoor whose hexagonal shape offers the possibilty to reproduce a “raised floor” combining as many pieces as desired.

Rayuela Stool

A stool is basically lifting up the floor. Traditional tile designs can spread infinitely by just repeating a single shape, creating patterns by combining different colors of the same material. The most efficient form, offering the greatest possibilities, is the rhombus. Three of them make a hexagon which is the best way to cover a surface. Using three colors you get a fascinating optical effect. By putting together these two principles we obtain the idea for this product: making a stool from a single basic piece (a leg with 1/3 of the seat), which repeated three times becomes a stool and many of them in combination create a borderless surface with infinite pattern combinations.

Home/Office Chair

Home/Office is a local tattoo applied onto a universal design. We decided to work on a classic design, the Aluminium Chair by Charles and Ray Eames designed in 1958, and applying an ornamentation full of connotations to it. The starting point was not just analysing the object itself but also the company which manufactures it and the status it has achieved. Vitra’s great achievement has been bringing the office home and taking the home to the office, and we wanted the project to materialise that concept through a subtle intervention which generates a strong visual impact. As a sign of respect to the chair, it has had a non aggressive and reversible intervention by just passing a needle through the holes of its standard net woven fabric leaving its trace in the form of a Victorian petit point flower. Two icons clashing to bring to life the concept of the manufacturer of the chair. The ornamentation of the chair is done stitch by stitch, completely by hand, by a professional artisan. It challenges our preconceptions and stresses our impression of just how much hand labour and how much industry is really applied to what we understand as an industrial object. The Aluminium Chair is a global product, sold worldwide with minimum variations. The Home/Office project offers the possibility of transforming the Aluminium Chair into a local product by local artisans. Technical specifications Chair by: Charles and Ray Eames, 1958. Cornucopia Lamp

Cornucopia is the Spanish word to describe a typical wall mirror used in baroque times that reflected the light of a candle magnifying its brightness. Our lives and our daily rituals radically changed when 150 years ago the candle was replaced by the Edison light bulb. Now that the iconic Edison lamp is ceding its place to new and more ecological technologies we have chosen to use a low voltage version of this mass-produced masterpiece that consumes very little energy and therefore is still in norm and commercialized. In the same way as the candle was once replaced by the Edison lamp (losing its functional sense but still being used for special occasions), we aimed to give a second life to the Edison light bulb recalling the physical gesture and ritual that for centuries the candle has required in order to be litten up. The Cornucopia lamp is made in signed editions of 100 pieces. Like books, once the present edition is finished we start with the next.

Candil Lamp

Candil was conceived as a table version of Cornucopia. Apparently they are different but their technical principle is the same: the rule of three. Therefore there are only three elements/materials that compose the lamps and allow the lighting of the light bulb: copper, wood and brass. In this series of lamps (Cornucopia, Candil and LaFlaca) the object itself becomes a natural extension of the electric cable. The negative pole (copper), the positive pole (brass) and the insulator (wood) play two different roles and together they become substance and shape of the product. Candil offers a visual and tactile experience with its natural materials and the warmth of the light that it spreads. As a modern version of a candlelight it is meant to enchant and transport us to an intimate and pleasant world. Candil lamps are made in signed editions of 100 pieces. As with books, once the present edition is finished we start with the next.

PET Lamp Project emerged as the possibility to approach a global problem (the plastic waste) with a local activity (the basket weaving tradition). Thanks to teamwork we managed to create a very popular product that has been a growing success since its presentation at Galleria Rossana Orlandi in 2013. In 2011, Álvaro Catalán de Ocón took part in a project focused on the reuse of PET plastic bottles. He addressed the plastic waste issue in the Colombian Amazon turning a short lifespan object into a product enriched by the local culture. The collaboration with artisans from the Cauca region displaced by the guerrilla war and the use of traditional crafts and materials allowed us to found PET Lamp Project. In 2012 the Colombian experience was launched. In 2013 it expanded to Chile and since then it has broaden its horizons to other continents: 2015 PET Lamp is made in Ethiopia, in 2016 we launched the Japan experience and in 2017 we returned to Chile to work in this occasion with the Mapuche community. In 2018 we were commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria to develop a special piece for the museum in collaboration with weavers from Ramingining, Australia. In 2019 we showed a collection of lamps made in Thailand by highly expert artisans in bamboo weaving. This year we present the Ghana collection, our second experience in Africa, this time in collaboration with Bolgatanga artisans. And for the first time, we are launching the first non-pendant PET Lamp, a series of table, floor and wall structures that fit the Pikul lampshades.

PET Lamp Collection

PET Lamp Collection is the emblematic installation of an already six years old project, mixing lampshades of every commercial collection developed so far. By bringing together a whole symphony of different weaving techniques, materials, patterns, languages and cultural experiences, this masterpiece is meant to represent a repertory with an especially valuable ethnographic and anthropologic character. One composition is enough for the user to make a tour through Colombia, Chile, Ethiopia and Thailand and closely admire the know-how of both craftsmanship and design, with the whole research they concern, since the very first workshop until the last customized component added to the lamps at our studio. The installation provides a rich and diverse visual language which is the vivid proof of a harmonious collaborative work approaching a global problem with local and ancestral traditions. From ACdO we ensure the maximum quality of our components. For this reason, we self-produce them in case the pieces available in the market do not meet our standards. These pieces have been specifically designed for our lamps, and now they are available separately.

Cable

The cables we use for PET Lamp are custom made for us, with a silicon rubber isolation that provides a unique flexibility and draws natural curves in the air. Our cables are available by the meter in two finishings: · Textile cable (colours 1-12) · Kraft cable

Cableholder

The cableholder is an essential piece in PET Lamp, it holds the cable to the ceiling in a subtle and efficient way, letting visible the cable passing through it, hiding the screw head and providing visual continuity.

Dimensions: ø16 x H 15 mm. Maximum hanging weight: 2 kg. Recommended for cables with a diameter between 7-8 mm. Materials: Available in raw and phosphated steel. Clipping side screw in plastic (included). OAMI Registered Design Nr. 002758151-0001 58
