Extrusion is a manufacturing process to make various plastic products of uniform cross-section of continuous length. In the extrusion process, plastic granules are fed to a hopper which is placed above a barrel. The barrel contains a feed screw and a die is attached at the end of the barrel. When the plastic granules come to the barrel they melt and a feed screw forces the liquid plastic through a die, forming a long tube like shape. The shape of the tube is determined by the shape of the die. The liquid plastic is cooled and it solidifies into a long tube which is cut at regular intervals. Various shapes result from the extrusion process such as plastic rods and strips. A feed screw barrel is a major component of an extrusion process.

Like extrusion, injection molding is also a manufacturing process to make molded plastic products. Similar to extrusion, in injection molding, plastic granules are fed to a hopper which is placed over a barrel. The barrel contains a feed screw. Molten liquid plastic is moved by the feed screw at the end of the barrel into a mold assembly. The mold assembly outputs the final molded plastic product. Like in extrusion, the barrel containing the feed screw is also a major component of the injection molding process.
