Fall 2018 | CONTRIBUTORS
Hello!
My first year at university was one of the most exciting times of my life. It was the first time I had moved out of my family home and freedom smelt like new books and classrooms in a brand new town with brand new pals—but it wasn’t all easy-going and carefree. Navigating your way around a huge new campus can be tricky, which is why, on page 29, you will find advice on getting to know your new stomping ground (complete with a mini checklist!) plus ideas to keep your dorm room safe and secure on page 31. The so-called “Gig Economy” is thriving in America right now, with roughly six million Americans choosing to work part time for the flexibility it provides their work/life balance. This is the kind of flexibility that is vital to students, who simply don’t have the time to hold down full time jobs while studying. On page 10, we’ve compiled a list of eight side hustles you can start today, so you can make money on your own terms, in your own time. It’s safe to say that this Back to School issue of College News is filled to the brim with fun content including interviews (read our chat with Billy Martin from Good Charlotte on page 24), sports news (page 16) and what not to wear this Halloween (page 32); but the star of the show this fall, is our cover story, Joe Cole. The British actor, who plays the leading guy in A24’s A Prayer Before Dawn, talks to us about the brutal reality of life on set, getting into character and very strange encounters indeed on page 20...

Moving into your new dorm room is exciting; put your own personal stamp on it with our advice
FRESHMAN GUIDE Before you start to hit up the local Goodwill or Craigslist ads, be sure to remember that everything is temporary. You are definitely going to change your mind when it comes to arrangement (and possibly your major, too). The college owns your dorm room; you just live in it (at the moment). With that being said, respect the space. BACK TO BASICS • Bed and linens • Desk and chair • Lamp • Grooming products • Two checked baggages of clothes • School supplies • Home memorabilia If I had a chance to do it all over again, if I
You may or may not have heard of Big Lots (it happens to be my favorite store). Fortunately, it has everything you need to champion the college grind. More importantly, if you hate shopping lists—or lists in general—Big Lots has your back. They have created a Dorm Checklist, and if you find yourself upgrading to larger living quarters, an Apartment Checklist is also provided.

Leaving home base can be tough. Especially, when your parents have nurtured you from the womb and groomed you into a college student. I’m sure you are looking forward to having complete freedom and liberty to decorate the dorm of your dreams. If inspiration and creativity is lacking, inspo.dormify.com has included dorm-room tours on their website. Lastly, visit your fellow college friends as much as possible. Get comfortable in the halls, bathrooms and social spaces. Taking that a step further, sleep a few nights there. Have a slumber party (any theme of your liking). Living with strangers can make you paranoid and even turn you into a shy adult. Embrace the opportunity to master the craft of conversation. Blooming and flourishing is the goal of your freshman year. BENEFICIAL URLS Noteworthy links to follow that optimizes productivity and maximizes time settling in and exploring your new environment are pbteen.com and roomify.com. These two websites have bundled a dorm into a sweet package that will have you tearing open new gifts just like Christmas morning. They include basics and a little extra swag (if you’re willing to pay for it). cn

ack to the college grind you go, working non-stop in the classroom so you can eventually graduate to work even harder in the real world. The lulls of college life can be daunting for those who are like me: in need of every dollar available to make some spending cash. Most college students rely on money from their summer jobs; many utilize those funds to cover their fall semester daily expenses. What we have discovered is that finding extra income can be difficult for those who do not have a defined skillset just yet. This is even more difficult while maintaining the appropriate GPA and some sense of a social life on campus. You don’t have to worry about that anymore—no longer are the days of broke college kids. The internet has created vast opportunities for young students to capitalize on the growing need for temporary and short-term work. Let me introduce you to eight side hustles that will help you keep money in your pocket and time on your hands. 1 TUTORING
Tutoring is the ultimate campus hustle. Your ability to make information easier to comprehend for your fellow students will help you generate extra cash. Utilize your knowledge and academic strengths to capitalize on your surroundings. 2 CELL PHONE REPAIR
The world has evolved rapidly and cell phones make up most of our daily lives. Many platforms utilize similar software and learning how to repair cell phones can help you add a nice chunk of money to your bank account. Coming from someone who breaks his phone screen every chance he gets, having a cost-effective option for a quick repair is important. The ability to fix phone screens alone is a big money maker. Trust me, just by bringing your tools to campus, you will find out quickly how important screen-repair is for 18- to 22-year-olds. 3 PODCASTING
Are you popular? Do you know how to talk and engage with an audience? Starting a podcast could be the route for you. A successful podcast will draw a loyal listener base which provides you with the opportunity to sell products, services or simply sell ad space to local businesses who want to capitalize off of your popularity. 4 EBAY/ONLINE RESELL
Selling your stuff or buying and reselling products is a great way to make easy money over the semester. You can purchase simple dorm room essentials and sell them at cheaper prices than the campus store or you can focus on rare items and make money from the resell of those items. The online business avenue is ideal for a college student looking to try out their entrepreneurial spirit first hand.
5 UBER EATS/DOOR DASH/
FOOD DELIVERY SERVICES
One of the more creative avenues to making quick money includes working with food delivery services like Post Mates, Uber Eats, Door Dash and Go Puff, to name a few of the popular platforms. Delivering food is a great way for college students to earn real money while not punching a clock every day. 6 DOG WALKING/SITTING/HOSTING
The internet has created a beautiful haven for dog lovers. College students who may have to leave their beloved pets back home and need some pet connection can sign up to be dog walkers in the surrounding area of the campus. There are also other ways to engage with the dog community. You could become an independent pet groomer as well. 7 SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
Social media has become one of the more popular aspects of our lives. Millions of users every day engage with the various social media platforms. This has created more and more opportunity for young entrepreneurs to capitalize on growing trends. Social media marketing can be a way to make quick cash, but if executed properly, you could see a tremendous return from your work. Capitalizing off of your campus popularity, a skill or a talent you may have by simply selling products via your Instagram and Facebook pages can help you keep some spending money in your pocket throughout the semester. 8 GRAPHIC/WEB DESIGN
Learning to create spectacular graphics can help you develop your professional portfolio at an early age. The internet is full of applications and websites dedicated to assisting you in creating a world of graphic, web and video content. The more creative ideas you bring to life the better your chances are at landing a paying client. Graphics are essential to the growth of any business, school organization and any other entity looking to separate themselves from their competition. You can post on Craigslist or create smooth graphics to display around campus as a way to find some easy money. Making extra money never hurt anyone, right? A good side hustle can change your entire campus experience. These ideas for extra pocket money can help you create and sustain new financial goals as you prepare for life after college. They also provide you with a platform to develop those entrepreneurial qualities you never knew you had. Learn the key to creating a strong budget with your new money and utilize the resources around you to improve your college experience. cn

Projector Smartphone Over the last decade or so, half of video viewing has been carried out on a mobile device. Screens on phones have grown in size and so have ideas on how to view images on them, too. Movi, an Android
smartphone, was built with projection capabilities in mind but without the additional purchase of an accessory to do so. Priced at $599, this device can project 720p images up to 200 inches in size diagonally. This concept isn’t new to a lot of smartphone users. In the past, companies like Motorola have sold smartphones that can connect to projector accessories. These tend to be on the pricey side given that the phone and accessory have to be purchased seperately. Both together typically will cost you anywhere from $700 to roughly $1,000, so Movi is going to be your best bet. The makers of Movi list this phone as unlocked, meaning it can work with
most service providers. For more info on specs and where to order one, check out MoviPhones.com.
Make the World Your Notebook Phree is a new smartpen that puts a fun twist on drawing, note-taking and writing. Similar to a few other pens on the market, Phree pairs with your smartphone, laptop, or tablet and allows you to write on any surface. Saving paper and preserving mother nature just got a heck of a lot easier. What makes Phree standout from competitors is its array of features. Its latest firmware makes the device compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and for

iOS users, this will be added at a later date. Some other features that are eyecatching are its mini touchscreen display for notifications, and that it doubles as a headset to take phone calls. For VR/AR (virtual reality/augmented reality) users, Phree has an input for that, too, so your smartpen is always ready to be of use. At the moment, Phree is still only taking pre-orders for its qualified backers that supported the funding campaign to get the idea off the ground. The pen by itself will cost $198 and the case (that also works as a wireless charger and kickstand) will cost roughly $250. For updates straight from the development team on when and how you can get your hands on a Phree pen, check out OTMTech.com.
65-inch TVs That Roll Up Early this year, LG upgraded a prototype that was already in the works to change the way we all watch television. An 18-inch TV was made even larger to a 65-inch display that’s conveniently rollable. This means the days of having to move a large television carefully with the possibility of scratching,
14
dropping, or damaging it are almost behind us all. What’s amazing about what LG is doing, is that with this new way of storing your TV while not in use, the 4K resolution wasn’t compromised in the making of this new possible line of digital displays. Just imagine packing up to move into a new home, and instead of finding a box to put your fancy television in, you can instead press a button and it puts itself in a box. At the moment, there are no price points, release dates, or information on different sizing options, but you can expect to hear more from LG in the future.
Nintendo Shakes Things Up Since the release of Nintendo’s latest console, the Switch, the company has let it be known that they have more tricks up their sleeves before the year is over. With the introduction of Nintendo Labo earlier this year, some other exciting changes will be coming to the Switch before the end of 2018. Coming in September, Nintendo will be launching their online service, enabling Switch users to opt into competitive play
and online cooperative play for $20 per month. E3, one of the biggest gaming conferences for new titles to be announced, took place in June but it left fans guessing on major details. Popular multiplayer games like Fortnite and Super Smash Brothers seem perfect for this online service, but no new information has been released at this time. Given that the previous Super Smash Brothers game had online play, gamers can expect that same option to be available when the game is released. So far, we know that subscribers can look forward to different price points depending on if you want to participate in a family plan or an individual plan. Fans expect more games that will work alongside the online feature to be announced during the fall when the launch will take place. Luckily for users in Japan, they will be able to take part in a 90-day free trial with the purchase of a Splatoon 2 bundle and will be active once the online service goes live. More information regarding pricing and features for Nintendo Switch Online can be found on Nintendo.com. cn

College Football 2018: Players to Watch
The 2018 college football season is set to be a sizzler; keep your eye on College News’ top 5 favorites to watch on the pitch this year 1 DAMIEN HARRIS: RB, ALABAMA
CRIMSON TIDE
21-year-old Alabama Crimson Tide running back, Damien Harris, is more than worth his salt. Incredibly, Harris was eligible for the 2018 NFL draft but chose to remain a member of the prestigious college football team instead. After rushing for 1,000 yards last year and with a touchdown count reaching 11 (up from two the previous year), the Kentucky-born player is no doubt an asset to the team. 247Sports said of the running back, “Harris is so talented, his hold on Alabama’s RB1 status nearly led to five-star Najee Harris’ transfer after his freshman season last fall.” 2 N’KEAL HARRY: WR, ARIZONA
STATE SUN DEVILS
SEMINOLES
Cam Akers already boasts an impressive portfolio in his so far short career, having achieved a whopping 13,243 yards and 149 touchdowns to date. The Florida State Seminoles running back was named

4 DREW LOCK: QB, MISSOURI
TIGERS
Missouri quarterback, Drew Lock, has been making waves in the college football scene since 2015; that same year he was ranked by Rivals as a four-star recruit and the number six best pro-style quarterback in the 2015 class. According to seccountry.com, Lock is “considered one of college football’s premier NFL prospects heading into the 2018 season.”
In an interview with FOX Sports, draft analyst Mike Detillier said, “I’ve never seen a quarterback more accurate throwing the football than Drew Lock from Missouri. He’s the best. The best quarterback here on this campus.” 5 JUSTIN HERBERT: QB, OREGON
DUCKS
Quarterback Justin Herbert’s star is rising in the college football landscape and his place in the Oregon Ducks college football team is well-deserved. Herbert has long been applauded for his deft precision when it comes to throwing and catching the ball, with the NFL stating that, “Herbert’s arm and mobility will entice scouts, as well as help Oregon overcome the loss of head coach Willie Taggard after only one season at the helm.” cn

3 CAM AKERS: RB, FLORIDA STATE
MS Gatorade Player of the Year in 2016 and won the US Army Player of the Year Award in the same year. Holding the grand record for rushing 1,024 yards last season (beating Dalvin Cook’s 2014 record of 1,008 yards), Akers is cementing his reputation as a leading player in the game and one to put your bets on.
© S H U T T ER STOCK
The Arizona State Sun Devils wide receiver N’Keal Harry shows deep promise in the game despite his modest record of rushing for 659 yards and five touchdowns last season. Sports outlets everywhere applaud the player’s ability to catch the ball with exceptional precision. This, combined with his tactful use of running speed variations, makes Harry a strong candidate for the 2018 college football season. NFL.com said that Harry is “one of the most talented receivers in college football.”

magine a scenario where stress and trauma has affected you so deeply that it’s changed all primary functions of your body, from emotional and mental to physical. How does the body react to such an experience? “[Their] heart rate goes up. [Their] body releases a flood of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Those stress hormones can start killing off dendrites—the little branches in brain cells that transmit messages. In time, the stress can start killing off neurons and—especially in young children—wreaking dramatic and long-term damage, both psychologically and to the physical structure of the brain.” Now imagine a scenario where you’re nine years old, escaping a violent and poverty-stricken area in search for what many deem the United
18
States of America to be: the place for a “better” life. However, you’re separated from your dad, AKA the only parental figure you both physically have at the moment and know well enough to trust. He gets detained—not because he’s a convict or engaging in any violent crimes (note: you are trying to escape crime, not provoke it), but simply because he is an undocumented immigrant. This is what’s been happening to thousands of families (if not more) at the US and Mexico border these last few months. Children as young as babies are being torn apart from their parents, many of which aren’t being detained for any reason other than coming to the United States illegally. When Donald Trump’s Justice Department, led by Jeff Sessions, initiated
the “zero-tolerance” policy on immigration, that’s when shit hit the fan. Every immigrant, no matter what their reason of entry, was detained at the border. Those that came with children? Immediately separated from them due to the now common practice, with no certainty or indication of ever seeing them again. Remember imagining that you were a nine-year-old kid that had been escaping violence and crime only to be separated from your father? It’s a true story. The boy was placed into foster care and relocated to a Michigan family. His foster parents have stated that the little boy “... was extraordinarily fearful … [h]e was afraid to eat, he was afraid to look … [h]is clothes were soiled, he wouldn’t use the bathroom.”

The boy’s foster mom, using the pseudonym Jen, also has two other foster children who were separated from their parents, who described similar journeys to her. “All the children have shared stories of their time being held in detention facilities before being placed in foster care … I do get to hear a little bit about chain-link fences. They talk about mats on the floor, not a lot of food, and crying and fear,” says Jen. “I feel there is some form of punishment going on here and I can’t make sense of it. As a foster parent, I can’t make sense of why we have these kids for so long.” The stories of malnourishment and poor living conditions are not the only things going wrong at the border. Texas detention officer Jose Nunez sexually assaulted a four-year-old girl, instilling the fear to both her and the child’s mother that the mother would be deported if anyone came forward about the assault. Authorities investigating the case believe these assaults could’ve taken place for as long as two years and that other children may be victims. Not only are children being separated from their families, but there are officers abusing their power to engage in the criminal activity that is, ironically, so irrationally feared
about with illegal immigrants, along with taking advantage of these children and their families. The long term effects these barbaric family separations have on children is downright catastrophic. It is not new that children, especially in their early stages of life, develop a bond with their primary caregiver(s), which is absolutely crucial to that child’s future development. Harvard professor and researcher Charles Nelson conducted a study on orphanages in Romania, where over 100,000 children were placed due to a celibacy tax on families that had fewer than five children. As a result, families could not afford their children and had to give them up, often within their first two years of life. Nelson remembers, “... kids rocking uncontrollably and hitting themselves, hitting their heads against walls. It was heartbreaking. We had to make up a rule for ourselves as researchers that we would never cry in front of the children. Whenever one of us felt ourselves tearing up, we would walk out of the room.” In the study, the duration of damage was irreparable. Everything from a decrease in both white and gray matter in the brain, which transmits information and processes said information into problemsolving techniques respectively, to broken fight-or-flight responses, to cell damage to the brain was reported. These cell damages are irreversible, as most brain cells cannot be renewed or repaired. Additionally, the amygdala and hippocampus (parts of the brain that deal with attachment and fear) develop much differently when the bond of safety between a child and parent is broken. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not an uncommon development for these children later in life due to the fact that their neurons have inconsolable damage. Lisa Fortuna, a director at the Boston Medical Center for child and adolescent psychiatry, describes the PTSD response as, “the part of their brain that sorts things into safe or dangerous does not work like it’s supposed to. Things that are not threatening seem threatening.” Overall, the separation going on between parents and/or guardians and their children at the US and Mexico border is inexcusable. We are not protecting the lives of anyone by engaging in this disgusting behavior—we are only causing more harm and trauma to these poor children and their families. cn

With the mammoth success of his latest film, A Prayer Before Dawn, London-born actor Joe Cole talks making movies, acting and massages from murderers on set

s soon as Joe Cole and I are connected for this interview, it’s as though I am greeted by an old friend; he is relaxed, chirpy and prepared for a good old natter. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think I was talking to a colleague, a peer, but the British actor is more than that. His rising star within the cinematic landscape began modestly with secondary roles in UK procedural soaps but his career soon catapulted, making his face a familiar screen-favorite among the leading actors of our generation—and I suspect we will be seeing much more of him in the future, too. Cole has made key appearances in Green Room (2015), Eye on Juliet (2017), and, perhaps most notably, in the critically acclaimed British period drama, Peaky Blinders (2013-present), as the razor-sharp John Shelby. But fans should focus their attentions to the 29-year-old’s latest major role as Billy Moore in A24’s A Prayer Before Dawn. This gritty, primal boxing drama is based on the true memoirs of Billy Moore, a UK boxer who moved to Thailand and found himself incarcerated in two of Thailand’s most notorious prisons after dabbling in drugs and crime. While inside, Moore takes up Muay Thai boxing in an effort to—quite literally—fight his way out of prison. The film, which received Official Selection at 2017’s Cannes Film Festival, was released July 20 2018 and has lauded much critical acclaim since. (“It seems like people are enjoying the movie,” Cole says, humbly.) Getting into character Getting into the mindset of a true-to-life character—who is still alive—is unlike anything the actor has ever experienced before. “I actually met him [Billy Moore] when I was doing Peaky Blinders,” says Cole. “He’s a super charismatic, interesting guy with incredible anecdotes and life experience and he’s a joy to have around…So I got to know him really well and he opened up to me more and more in the build-up to shooting the movie. It was kind of amazing—he really gave himself to me, more than what’s in the book.” I ask the actor how did this role come to

,,
him and what did he have to do to prepare for such a versatile character? “I actually share an agent with the director,” he explains. The film’s director, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, made his stamp directing hard-hitting cult movies including Johnny Mad Dog (2008) and A Dios (2001). For his arguably bravest venture yet, the French director had his eyes firmly set on Cole to play his latest leading man after seeing his performance in prior films. “I trained a lot. I got to Thailand and was put in these real gritty Thai boxing camps where you wash with a bucket of water and kind of just really get stuck in and have these Thai guys beat you up for 10 hours a day [laughs],” Cole says. “That’s essentially what I did; and I ate Pad Thai.” A new experience What makes this award-nominated film so interesting and special is that, besides Cole himself and Thai actor Vithaya Pansringarm, the characters we see on screen are nonactors. Ex-convicts, boxers still incarcerated
and locals found in bars were anointed with these exceptional starring roles, where a glaring sense of truth underpins the entire narrative. “It’s an all-encompassing life experience,” Cole says. “It was a real experience, you know, working with ex-cons, prisoner boxers, a trans girl who we found in a club in Thailand and just all these people who hadn’t acted before and shooting in a real prison and what comes with that. It was just pretty amazing.” To my utter disbelief, the 29-yearold actor tells me, “I remember at one point, I got a massage off of three murderers at the same time—getting a massage from three guys who’ve killed three people!” Cole fondly recalls non-professional members of the film’s crew who helped bring a deft authenticity to the narrative as a whole. “I remember a guy teaching me how to smoke Ya ba [a drug containing caffeine and methamphetamines], which is one of the drugs Billy [Moore] smokes in prison. He was the assistant props guy. He’d spent a few years in prison and was addicted to Ya ba. So he showed me how to make this Ya ba pipe and he’s actually done it for real, you know? “Jean [is] a real advocate of getting the ‘truth’ in there. I’ve worked on films where directors have just said, ‘That’s fine, it looks good,’ whereas Jean is all about truth and authenticity and he wants to listen to the real people.” Cole explains to me that all of the sparring that occurs during the film’s fight scenes is completely real. “We had to actually be physical with each other, and when you’re doing that 18 hours a day, it takes its toll. I remember I nearly got knocked out by a Southeast Asian boxing champion who also spent seven years in the prison in which we filmed. He showed me his bed where he slept, which was just a bit of floor space, and we actually shot in that cell a bit. And he actually nearly knocked me out [laughs],”— by accident, he adds hastily. A new frontier Acting is a notoriously difficult industry in which to succeed, so I thought it only

pertinent to dig into how the Kingstonborn star did it himself. “I suppose it was the thing I was best at, at school,” Cole confesses. But it may surprise you, reader, that this actor is self-made in a way that makes you think that anyone can do this. “I didn’t know any actors, I didn’t have family [in the industry], obviously my little brother now [Finn Cole, Peaky Blinders]. But I didn’t know anybody in the industry. I never saw it as a logistical career path.” Cole tells me that his moment of career clarity came at a point when he had failed his A Levels at school and had been dealing with a bad breakup, all while watching his peers go off to university. “I just thought, you know what? This sucks. I need to pull my finger out.” After taking a drama course at the National Youth Theatre in London, Cole confesses that acting took over his life. “It was all I thought about. It was kind of weird. I was very passionate and obsessed almost. I was writing a lot; I wrote a television show that helped me get a better agent, and I was more interested in writing my television
rational than that. “I say this often to young aspiring actors: You’ve got to really want it; you’ve got to really, really want it.” He explains that to get to where is he now, he focused on what actors just one echelon above him in terms of career were doing.
show than I was going out clubbing, for example. It was almost a necessity.” Cole’s advice for aspiring actors is not to simply ‘dream big’ or ‘aim for the stars’; it’s more
Looking forward Cole’s mission to depict interesting and diverse characters and tell culturally taboo stories doesn’t stop here; in fact, this actor is just getting started. “I’ve just finished a show on Channel 4 [viewers can access this channel online] called Pure,” he tells me. “[Pure is] a true story based on this woman’s memoirs [Rose Bretécher]. She had a condition called Pure OCD which is a form of OCD where you have very vivid and intrusive thoughts constantly. In her case, it’s sexual thoughts. I play a guy with a porn addiction, who the main character meets, and we try to help each other with our problems.” A Prayer Before Dawn will be available to buy on DVD from September 24 2018. cn

22 Years:
A LOOK ON GOOD CHARLOTTE’S PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE WITH BILLY MARTIN College News speaks with Good Charlotte’s guitarist and keyboardist, Billy Martin, about the band’s latest album, life in the music industry and what’s next for the star BY JESSICA GAVRILOVSKI
F
rom a small bar-show band in La Plata, Maryland, to mainstream commercial success and selling out arena tours, Good Charlotte has quite the eclectic history. With seven studio albums already under their belt, several studio label changes, a few different drummers, and an already-occurred hiatus, Good Charlotte are still as alive and well today as they were in 1996. It’s not common, especially in rock-based genres, for bands that had major success in the early 2000s to still be successful today, but Good Charlotte have defied the odds. Guitarist and keyboardist Billy Martin discusses with us his professional strides with Good Charlotte, the upcoming
24
album, his personal growth along with the overall growth of GC and more. COLLEGE NEWS: Considering the rich catalog behind Good Charlotte, what would be your favorite Good Charlotte album and why? BILLY MARTIN: Every band says this but I really love our upcoming album Generation Rx! If I had to choose an older album, I would pick The Chronicles of Life and Death (2004). It was the album where we started to experiment musically with new styles and new sounds. I started playing piano and keys in the band
on that album [and] it opened up a lot of new sonic possibilities. We were following up a very successful album and there was a lot of pressure to deliver! CN: Speaking of your upcoming album Generation Rx, could you tell us a little bit about the album? BM: It is the most rock record we have ever made. It’s darker but very melodic. There’s a lot of big guitar moments and programming/ key textures. Lyrically, it’s deep and I think it will connect on an emotional level with a lot of fans. The title refers to the rise in

help keep me fresh. I work as a freelance illustrator for Marvel, Nickelodeon and other companies, as well. Staying well-rounded keeps you excited about each job instead of stuck doing the same thing all the time. CN: What’s your favorite part about recording music and why? BM: I love geeking out about sounds and exploring until the part is perfect. As the lead guitar player, I get to add the icing on the cake. You can kind of set the tone for the song based on the melody or sound you choose to play over the chords. I love hearing everything start to come together.

CN: Looking back, did you ever think you’d end up where you are today in music? BM: I dreamed of it every day since I was very young. I was naïve as a kid to know how hard it really is to make it in the industry. But I never doubted myself either. I knew I would do whatever it took and put the work in to make it. It’s still crazy to think about where I am though, I still think about it all the time.
mental health issues coupled with the opioid epidemic in the world right now. We grew up in “Generation X”, and now the kids are growing up in a very different world than we did. The music industry has always influenced culture and the youth is ultimately in charge of what’s hot in the music world. There needs to be a wakeup call as to what artists are saying because kids hang on every word their favorite artists say and we are hoping to say something that offers some hope with this album. CN: Following the upcoming album release, you guys will be heading out on the road for tour. What’s your favorite part about touring and why? BM: Playing the actual show is always fun. Leaving our families for any amount of time is hard. I’m very grateful for the chance to visit so many different cities and see friends around the world. Regardless of the hard parts of touring, when we get on stage, it’s always fun.
CN: What’s been your biggest personal and/or professional achievement thus far with Good Charlotte? BM: I’d have to say longevity. Magazine covers, platinum records, awards, all that stuff is great! I’ve seen a lot of artists who have that stuff and disappear a year later. I’m really proud that 18 years since our first release, our shows are somehow getting bigger and we are still gaining new fans from the next generation of kids. CN: For many, working in the music industry, while rewarding and incredible in many ways, can also be a challenging and disruptive path. How do you maintain and balance a life outside of Good Charlotte? BM: Having other outlets is really important. I have a wife and two kids who keep me very grounded. I’m up early packing school lunches and dropping the kids off at school every day. That side of my life gives me motivation for being successful. I also do some music producing in other genres to
CN: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? BM: I love music too much to see myself anywhere else. I’d love to spend more time in the studio working with other artists. I’m really into producing hip-hop and making beats. I’d love to work in TV and Film on scores as well. I [also] think GC will still be here, playing shows and making music in some capacity. CN: Finally, many fans have staple albums with their favorite artists that have stuck with them in some way. Good Morning Revival (2007) happens to personally be one of mine. What are your top three favorite albums that inspired and/or shaped you today? BM: First off, thank you! The albums that made the biggest impact on me would be Silverchair’s Freak Show (1997), I loved that they were close to my age and gave me the motivation to start playing. Korn’s debut selftitled album blew me away. I remember being on a family trip and being a mopey teenager and putting this on in my headphones and just living there the whole trip. Depeche Mode’s Violator (1990) is also really important to me. Started me with my obsession with synths and they are [the] king[s] of sad pop songs! cn

Coffee vs. Energy Drinks Coffee and energy drinks tend to be the standard go-to for Americans looking for an energy boost—but what’s the difference? By Jessica Gavrilovski
T
he fall semester is fast approaching, and many students will be relying on some sort of caffeine or energy drink in order to pull off those ghastly all-nighters. With that being said, what’s the healthiest go-to between coffee and energy drinks? What are the major differences and similarities between the two? Let’s find out.
© S H U T T ER STOCK
Coffee
To start, where exactly does coffee come from? According to BizBrain, seeds are planted in higher altitudes and shaded plant beds, generally in areas of South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. These seeds are typically referred to as Robusta beans or Arabica beans (not including blended beans), and the fruit of the beans are called cherries. Once the cherries are harvested, they can be processed either dry or wet, both with the ultimate goal of getting the cherries to be at 11 percent moisture. Once the milling and exporting process is over, the coffee roasting begins, which transforms the coffee cherries into the brown beans that most people are familiar with. Afterwards, the beans can either be put out for sale for consumers to grind as they wish or ground down for different methods of coffee making, such as cold-brew, Turkish roast, Italian roast or French roast. Some major health benefits of drinking coffee include higher energy levels, helping to burn fat, improving one’s mood, and
lowering one’s risk of Type 2 diabetes, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, to name a few. On the flip side, some side effects of drinking coffee include an overproduction of hydrochloric acid, especially if one drinks coffee on an empty stomach, overstimulation of peristalsis (AKA the sensation that causes people to go to the bathroom), which directly affects our ability to properly digest food and absorb its nutrients, and, ironically, the same boost of energy that’s listed as a positive can also be a negative when looked at from a long-term perspective.
Energy Drinks
Now, what about energy drinks? As stated in the New York Times, the modern-day energy drink can be traced back to post-WWII Japan. Once amphetamine use started to be restricted in Japan, a company named Taisho introduced Lipovitan-D in 1962, which was basically highly-caffeinated tonic water sold in miniature-sized bottles. By 1984, an Austrian marketing director named Dietrich Mateschitz discovered Lipovitan-D and decided to partner up with the Thai manufacturer of Krating Daeng (an energy drink similar to Lipovitan-D) named Chaleo Yoovidhya. “Krating Daeng” translates to “Red Bull,” and from there, Mateschitz took the “Red Bull” name to both Australia and the United States. Most energy drinks contain sugar,
caffeine, taurine and some vitamins (usually B-vitamins). A lot of the pros and cons of energy drinks are similar to coffee, but according to a study conducted by the University of Buffalo’s Kathleen E. Miller, overconsumption of energy drinks in young adults tends to correlate with higher illicit drug and substance use, sexual risk-taking (i.e. without protection), not wearing a seatbelt, and more likely to engage in violent fighting. Interestingly, these results were witnessed in white Y.A.s, but not black Y.A.s. In an interview with the New York Times, Miller states that these behaviors could be due to “...not so much because of the caffeine content—which can certainly have an effect—but because of what the ads [of energy drinks] are telling people.” In conclusion, it’s safe to say that there are some good and bad to both coffee and energy drinks. They generally serve the purpose of providing higher energy and allowing people to get things done. However, if consumed in high doses, both can be extremely lethal and possess harmful side effects. To say that one is entirely worse or healthier than the other can’t be scientifically proven—it’s all a matter of preference. Regardless, make sure to apply the sayings, “Too much of a good thing is a bad thing” and “Drink responsibly”, to the same realm of coffee and energy drinks. cn

Back to School: Getting Around Campus Navigating your way around campus is the first step to feeling at home when you start college
T
he first year at college is particularly exciting; for many students, this is their first home away from their parents, and with that brings a huge sense of freedom. But campus life in those first few weeks of semester can prove to be confusing, too. Learn to navigate your new campus and get settled in quickly with our top tips.

Orientation day Most colleges offer orientation days to new students prior to the beginning of the fall semester. This day is a perfect opportunity to register, sign up to classes, learn about general rules and policies and get to know new peers and faculty. Not only this, new students will be given a guided group tour of the campus and the opportunity to explore independently so that when the first day of class arrives, students are more adequately acquainted with their new surroundings. Map it Maps, whether they be printed or downloaded and interactive, are a basic essential for a new student’s campus pocketbook. Familiarize yourself with the major locations situated on the map and

keep it with you during the first weeks of college to easily locate classes, the library, the school’s health center and the student union. Alternatively, if you are unsure ask older students or members of staff for directions. Public transport Public transport for college students tends to be very reliable, frequent and (perhaps best of all) affordable. Check the campus’ bus terminal for routes around your new city and their scheduled times. You will likely need a student identification card for travel discounts, so make sure this stays in your purse or wallet at all times. Some universities also provide park-and-ride shuttle services so you can park your car
outside of college grounds and get into campus with no fuss. Campus security Colleges across the nation are upping their security measures amidst recent reports of attacks and crimes on campus—according to rainn.org, an astonishing 11.2 percent of all students in the US experience sexual assault alone. Prior to starting classes, find out who your campus security personnel are and take note of their contact details. Always try to walk in groups where possible when traveling across campus grounds (particularly in the dark, winter months) and endeavor to plan ahead by telling your roommates where you are going and when they should expect you home. cn

Stay Safe in Your Room
at College, at home and away. The Addalock is a portable door lock that can be installed and removed in seconds on most in-swinging doors giving you additional safety, security and privacy while in your room. Small Steps to Safer Schools:
A Guide to Campus Safety BY LAYNE RUDA
Crime on campus is at an all-time high, so keeping yourself and your belongings safe on campus should be a priority

ccording to the Clery Act, 54,562 acts of crime were reported on college campuses in 2014. When starting a new year, you are responsible for taking care of your belongings, your health and your safety when on and off campus. Here are some tips in different environments to keep you and your belongings safe this year.

ON CAMPUS » The buddy system may seem elementary, but there is always safety in numbers. Travel with at least one other person when going anywhere. Collect the cell phone numbers of your roommate, resident assistant, and campus police in case of an emergency. » Walk around campus on designated and welllit paths. Take note of the locations of emergency callboxes available on most campuses so you’re aware of which one is the closest. » Unplug during your commute and focus on your surroundings. If something feels wrong, don’t hesitate to contact security. RESIDENCE HALL » Make sure your dorm room is locked at all times and don’t open it for somebody you don’t know. Keep a keychain pepper spray or alarm
attached to your keys. That way you cannot lose your keys, and you will have some protection on you at all times. » Lock up documents and electronics when you’re not in your room. Invest in a trunk with a built-in lock, so the lock cannot get cut, and keep your key on a ring with your room keys. » Get to know the people on your floor so you know when there is a visitor in case of a burglary. If you or your roommate has a visitor, don’t leave them unattended in your room because the majority of crime is caused by non-strangers. OFF CAMPUS PARTIES & SOCIAL SITUATIONS » Attend a party in a group of people and stick with one person in the group. Sexual violence is more prevalent when in a social setting involving alcohol. Instead of one person, you’ll have a handful of people in case of emergency. » Be sure the designated driver stays sober throughout the evening. If you see them take a sip of anything, make sure to call an Uber or a Lyft. » When you’re on a date, tell a friend where you’re going, send them a description of your date or their social media profile, and what time you’re expected to return home. Keep them posted throughout the night if anything changes. cn

What Not to Wear This
It’s never too soon to begin planning your Halloween costume—use this extra time to read these suggestions and find an outfit that that looks spooky (or not so spooky) and avoids cultural appropriation

Mocking the minority Recently, petitions have been made in order to try and ban the sale of Caitlyn Jenner masks to men. Whilst it is perfectly okay to dress up as someone on TV, these masks are again inaccurate, emphasizing the presence of the man in the costume in order to dismiss the transgender movement. Similarly, make sure that your costume doesn’t sexualize women. Sexualize a pumpkin instead. Appreciation, not appropriation Just remember the word ‘appreciation’. For example, you can wear a sari to an Indian wedding, but you can’t turn it into a costume. cn

Racial & cultural stereotypes Costume shops and popular culture provide us with inaccurate representations of real societies, such as American Indians and Japanese Geishas. These costumes are exaggerated for wearability and it is precisely this inaccuracy that turns such a costume into a joke. The costume is representing a person, meaning that person becomes the joke, ultimately isolating their appearance and culture in ridicule—definitely not worth the cute photo. Other costumes to avoid include sombreros, ‘gypsie’ outfits, ‘blackface’, dreadlocks, Middle-Eastern dress and nun outfits. If it’s considered sacred by another culture, it probably isn’t appropriate.

ndoubtedly, the biggest holiday in any college student’s life is Halloween. A night of fake blood, ripped clothing and more-gruesome-than-usual drink concoctions makes it an annual party must. Most importantly, Halloween is the perfect opportunity for an Insta-worthy photo-shoot. Whilst Halloween is a chance to dress up as someone else and have a laugh, it is also the time of year when the issue of cultural appropriation is most heavily debated. Cultural appropriation is when a dominant culture adopts elements and stereotypes from a minority culture, leading to serious generalizations of real people. Here’s how to have a memorable, but non-offensive, holiday.

Your Lazy Guide to
Grooming Six beneficial grooming steps that won’t put a dent in your sleep
BODY
Brush your hair before getting in the shower. Use a sulfate-free shampoo on your scalp and a silicone-free conditioner on the ends of your hair. Wash your body after your hair to prevent breakouts. If you have dry skin, use a soap-free cleanser. For oily skin, use a water-based wash that helps unclog pores.
SHAVE
For the guys BODY If you have dry skin, use a soap-free cleanser. For oily skin, look for a water-based wash that helps unclog pores. Use shampoo but do not wash your hair every day, as this will dry it out. Wash your beard with water to soften it before shaving.
SHAVE
Shaving should be the last step in the shower. Apply a shaving gel and shave with the grain. Invest in a razor that is designed for pubic hair and for longer lasting hair removal, try cream, an epilator or wax strips.
Shaving in the shower is a good idea as the heat will soften your beard and provide a closer shave. Use a pre-shave oil and apply shaving soap with a brush to raise the hairs. Always follow the grain.
FACE
Whatever look you are going for, commit to keeping your beard groomed. Remember that there should be a gap between your eyebrows and keep an eye on your nails, too. If you’re into it, “manscaping” is also a thing now.
Makeup wipes are a lazy girl’s best friend, but always double cleanse with a simple cleanser. You can skip the toner but invest in a good, light moisturizer (even if your skin is oily) and exfoliate one to two times a week.
TRIM
Making the effort to get your eyebrows waxed or threaded will save you time in the mornings. Never pluck above the eyebrow but brush the hairs upwards and trim with scissors.
HAIR
Want frizz-free beach waves that take five minutes? Put slightly damp hair into two braids and blow-dry from above, moving down the braid. Undo and apply a little hair oil for added shine and smoothness.
SMELL
FACE Choose a simple cleanser and wash your face in the morning and at night. Also invest in a scrub (to exfoliate the hangover off of your face once a week). Never skip the moisturizer if you want to see noticeable improvement to your entire face.
HAIR If your hair is in your eyes, go to the barbers. Style your hair before applying a small amount of product. If you have short or thin hair, use light sprays or a paste for separation. For thicker, longer hair, styling creams and waxes will weigh the hair down and add shine.
SMELL Go easy on the aftershave. A couple of dabs or sprays on the neck or wrists is enough.

Leaving your perfume in the steamy bathroom can affect its smell and applying it to dry skin will diminish its scent faster.

For the girls
Put down that hoodie. Wear a tie instead. T-shirts and hoodies are great, but sometimes college events call for a tie. Fortunately, it’s possible to dress dapper on a college budget.
Classic two-color striped ties are perfect for fraternity or other organization events. These ties stand out, especially when an entire group wears the same tie. They come in a wide variety of styles and color combos, so it’s easy to match group or college colors. When it’s time to look professional for an internship, class presentation or job interview, a necktie is a must. Save the bright, novelty print ties for another day. Instead, play it safe with a solid or subtly patterned tie in a toned-down color, like burgundy or navy. When a t-shirt isn’t appropriate, shop Tiemart.com for budget-friendly neckties, bow ties, socks, suspenders and more.
