Why low-light Camera is Important for Wildlife Photography

A wildlife photographer is well aware of the fact that most animals come out either at dawn or dusk. It is also the time when the availability of light is pretty much less. It is not mandatory to shoot under the sun and wait for the perfect click throughout the day. Even if you have the best camera for wildlife photography, you will reach a point where the light will be too low to use. At this point, you need to start experimenting with your skills and techniques to improve the success rate. Few night photography tips which can help you in getting usable images clicked in low light

Aperture and Shutter Speeds It is no hidden secret that widest aperture (lowest f-stop) should be used to let in the maximum amount of light. Ideally, a telephoto lens should have aperture of f/4 and f/2.8 but the mid-range telephoto lenses are of f/5.6 or f/6.3 and should be avoided to a large extent. Try to keep it as wide as possible to provide optimum space. With regards to Shutter Speed, it is important to drop down the speed as much as while still feeling comfortable about shooting. To eliminate the shake, it is advisable to use a tripod and keep it steady.

Pan Shot As soon as the shutter speed gets really slow, you’ll automatically introduce motion blur from the subject moving. Whether a subject is walking or running along you can always pan your camera. With practice, you can move your camera at the same rate as the animal and freeze the body even with the slow shutter speed. It is evident to get a blurred background but will create a cool effect.

Changes in ISO Changing ISO is one risky task and many photographers don’t wish to touch this feature even when they know their camera is capable of doing so. It is sure shot that a higher ISO will introduce noise into photo but it is still acceptable than a blur image. Panasonic Lumix GH5S has the high sensitivity sensor with Dual Native ISO technology and the latest Venus Engine. Dual Native ISO is a technology provided in the professional cameras and offers the advantages of very high sensitivity while keeping the noise level low.

Use of Zoom Lens Zoom lens with variable aperture are preferred in this case. It is acceptable to have the camera with the constant aperture throughout. But if not, then less light will hit the sensor while zooming in.

Stop Underexposing Your best camera for wildlife photography can help in underexposing and it is tempting to an extent as you can brighten it later. But that brightness will leave a lot of digital noise and make the image unusable. This will give you a quicker shutter speed and the photo will likely need post-production activity. It is always advisable to keep the exposure optimum as possible.
