WHAT IS FACEBOOK? • Facebook is the most popular social networking site on the planet with 1.65 billion active users globally (March 2016). • It was first founded by Mark Zuckerberg in Febuary 2004, when he was in college. • Now worth more than $100billion, with money made through sponsored advertising from businesses looking to target Facebook users

FACEBOOK SECURITY Although Facebook has top security measures in place, it is important to be wary of potential cyber threats when using the platform. To ensure your information is as secure as possible, follow these steps to edits your privacy settings and learn about apps.

PRIVACY SETTINGS 1. Open up Facebook on a computer, click the arrow in the top toolbar on the far right & then ‘Settings’ 2. Select Privacy on the left hand-side 3. It is split into three sections, asking you questions: “who can see my stuff?”, “who can contact me?” and “who can look me up?”

• Think about who you want to give access to your profile and everything you post. • Remember that if all your activity is public, everyone on Facebook can see your all your photos, updates, personal information, wall posts etc. • Don’t leave yourself or your children vulnerable by having private details and photos exposed to strangers. • Make sure you look carefully at all the questions asked and click ‘edit’ to change any current settings you’re unhappy with

APP SETTINGS

Sometimes on Facebook, in order to enjoy content, you need to allow an application to gain to access information about who you are. • Be wary of giving apps such as games and quizzes access to your profile. Some may view your photos, friends, personal information and even post to your timeline on your behalf. • You can edit the app settings to improve security measures • Be sure to delete apps from your profile when you no longer require them. In order to edit app settings, you can do the following: 1. Open up Facebook and click the arrow/triangle in the top toolbar on the far right. Click Settings from the drop-down menu.

2. Select Apps on the left hand-side – note that under each app’s title, it will show a padlock with who can see your activity with this app on Facebook. This is known as ‘app visibility’ and can be changed in the settings.

3. Click on the app you want to edit the settings for. • You’ll see various options but if you wish to change app visibility, click the dropdown menu. • For maximum privacy, select ‘Only Me’ so that any updates shared by the app are seen only by you. We otherwise recommend, you have all apps visible to ‘Friends’ so that information is not being shared with people you do not know.

REMOVING APPS In order to remove apps, you can do the following: 1. Open up Facebook and click the arrow/triangle in the top toolbar on the far right and then ‘Settings’ 2. Select Apps on the left hand-side 3. Move the cursor over the app you want to delete 4. Click on the ‘x’ 5. Click ‘Remove’
