OVERVIEW: DIGITAL FAMILIES Digital Families is a series of workshops focusing on the family coproduction of digital media. Its primary aims are to: • Develop parents’ and children’s levels of digital literacy • Promote further family engagement in community services • Foster a culture of family learning to support children’s education • Particularly for children with Special Educational Needs This project is funded by Samsung UK, undertaken by Bournemouth University and supported by Aster Homes and Skills & Learning BDP. Age group: This activity is best suited to families with children in years 3 - 6 (Key Stage 2)

Timing: This activity takes approximately 40 - 60 minutes to complete.

Before you start... Make sure all smart devices are connected to the internet and have PicPac installed.

3. Press take photos to open the stop motion camera screen

We will use this screen to automatically take pictures, at a set time period. These pictures will then be combined together to create a Stop-Motion Video. We can change settings for taking pictures from this screen, including: • Auto: Whether the app will automatically take pictures after a certain number of seconds, or whether images are taken manually. • Interval: Number of seconds pause between each picture, so how much time you have to set each shot. • Size: The resolution used to take picture. Higher is better, but it dependent on your devices camera.

4. Gather your props, set up your stage and write your script

5. Start taking the individual images for your movie Professional Stop-Motion Videos have 60 images per second so a 30 second clip would require 1,800 images. We can choose how many images to show per second later. To start, we can make a short video with 30 images, displaying 1 image per second.

After you press play, if Auto is selected then the app will start automatically take photos at the set Interval

6. Edit images to appear in your final movie

• You can now preview your movie • You may want to change the speed images are shown • Images can be selected for inclusion and deleted, copied, or rotated

• When you have edited your images, you can make final changes to your movie. • You can add a Title Screen Note: in the free version, you are only allowed to create videos at a resolution of 360 x 480.

7. Record your audio and add music to the movie

• You can record your own sound effects and voice. You will be taken throughout the entire video to do so • You can add music that you have on your tablet or…

• … search for music online to download and add to your video.

Note: Additional information will be added to the video so that it can be shared legally. Be mindful of copyright if you are using music on your tablet.
