G

reen. It’s not a chic buzzword, it’s a building and living philosophy.

Meeting of the [Green] Minds Green Building, Green Living marked the theme of this year’s Atlanta Housing Summit, which featured a top-flight panel of speakers. • Matt Hoots, President, Sawhorse Design/Build • Frank Wickstead, Residential Energy Efficiency Manager, ICF International • Oliver Curtis, Residential Green Building Project Manager, Southface

“Green does not have to cost more. ” – Matt Hoots, on recycling, not wasting materials to save while going green. Energy Vampires Beware! Phantom power loads were a hot topic, as panelists mentioned those hidden energy wasters we over look. One example Oliver Curtis mentioned, an electric pencil sharpener that sat unused in the Southface office,

zapping a few watts of electricity every day. Simple fix, unplug it. The things that stay plugged in drain power, even when off. One solution: charging stations for laptops, smartphones, iPads that minimize the phantom load.

Easiest Energy Fix Solution, Ever “Turn it off.” That’s how Matt Hoots (www.sawhorse.net) put it succinctly, as he explained the findings of energy audits his company conducts on homes and offices. Continued on page 3

Doing performance tests, Matt has found tons of products that can reduce energy usage - and save money on costs simply turn off unused lights, computers, equipment like fax machines and copiers.

Duct work ain’t sexy “Priorities one and two when improving the energy efficiency of the vast majority of homes is air and duct sealing,” says Frank Wickstead (fwickstead@icfi.com).

www.diiatl.com

Stopping duct leakage may not be a ‘sexy’ green solution, but it’s a good - and affordable - one.

Some homes retain only a portion of the heated and cooled air the HVAC system produces. The combination of air and duct sealing keeps ‘bought’ air where it’s supposed to be - inside the home - and reduces energy costs.

The Future of Green Many products and inventions will make going green easier and more affordable. The future of residential construction is “a renewed focus on design, execution, and verification,” says Oliver Curtis (www. southface.org), with emphasis on team and a whole house approach. q

Can you hear See me Now?

TRIAD Invisible Speakers

T

he sound is clear as a bell, but you don’t see any speakers? Seems to surround you, from everywhere.

Hidden by design. Triad’s DesignerSeries speakers offer exceptional sound that can fit any decor and design. For smaller rooms wanting superior sound, these are ideal. “We’ve installed more than a hundred pairs of invisible speakers over the years,”

says Chuck Schlick. “You can paint, wallpaper, even put up to 2mm of wall texture right over the speaker - making them completely invisible.”

Exceptional sound, anywhere Triad produces a full line of highend architectural loudspeakers. Their philosophy is to provide great speakers, made in the U.S.A. along with excellent service provided by top custom installers. Designed “to blend unobtrusively into your environment,” these are installed in walls and the ceiling. Because they can be sealed in the walls, they work well in humid areas such as bathrooms. Contact Digital Interiors for details. q Left: TRIAD makes invisible speakers, including the DesignerSeries DS100, which can be hidden behind almost any wall covering. Photo courtesy: TRIAD.
