T

he 2nd Annual Atlanta Housing Summit brought together some of Atlanta’s best architects, interior designers, realtors and home builders.

The Maturing Population As Americans age, so too should our homes. Bob Black, instructor of the Certified Aging in Place specialist program for the NAHB, talked about designing homes with that in mind.

“We need to build homes that last lifetimes, not just decades,” - Bob Black on Aging in Place. Most people want to live in their homes as long as they can, he said. Aging in Place designs let them do that longer, by designing houses that grow and mature with their owners’ needs. Bob recommended using integrated technologies and monitoring systems like GrandCare. “Technologies such as lighting controls, thermostat automation and

easy to use AV controls contribute to accessibility and visitability,” adds George Ide, Digital Interiors.

Universal Design “What you design for Shaquille O’Neal is not what you design for Mini Me,” said Bob. Accessibility and visitability were two of the housing design trends highlighted. Everyone will have different needs. It’s about comfort, familiarity and security. For more info on Aging in Place, visit nahb.org or aarp.org. q
