A lot of work goes into coordinating a festival of this size and stature. I want to thank our volunteer committee and my dedicated staff for making it happen and bringing attention to our city, Central Park and historic Park Avenue.

I also extend a special thanks to our community sponsors who help support the festival, including our Presenting Sponsor Keller Williams Winter Park.

Crealdé

School of Art will lead creative workshops for children under a tent in South Central Park, near the Veteran’s Fountain. The workshops will include:

The Gnome: Every garden needs a bit of whimsy, and in a few simple steps, children can create their own gnome out of polymer clay to bring some magic home.

Self-Portrait Doll: With tinfoil and pipe cleaners, children will create a human-shaped small sculpture. They’ll use masking tape representing different skin colors to wrap around the sculpture and create a 3D selfportrait. In addition, a variety of materials such

as cloth, ribbon, wire, beads and yarn will be used to dress the dolls and make their hair. As a final touch, there’ll be markers and pens to draw smiles on the dolls’ faces.

Kapa Bark Cloth Painting: Made throughout the islands of the Pacific, “Kapa” is the Hawaiian name for bark cloth. In this project, children will use kraft and brown construction paper to paint images of sea animals, plants, leaves and an array of organic and geometric shapes. They’ll also learn to reproduce the look of ancient Kapa Bark Cloth by painting with a limited palette of browns, black and white — giving an earthy, natural feel to these works of art.

ENTERTAINMENT ACTS

The Orlando Children’s Choir, based in Longwood, is a performance-based organization comprised of talented, enthusiastic singers in grades K-12.

Under the direction of Julie Campese, for the past 14 years the choir has performed throughout Central Florida and in New York City. Singers in the Orlando Children’s Choir have performed at the Hard Rock Live, opened for Orlando Magic games and shared the stage with Tim Minchin and the cast of Matilda the Musical. They’ve also been onstage at Carnegie Hall and performed alongside Barry Manilow and David Osmond, just to name a few.

OCC educates and trains young musicians in the techniques of choral music, and their performers are committed to developing and sharing their talents with everyone — “inspiring kids one note at a time”.

ENSEMBLE

The Winter Park High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Michael Clemente, associate director of bands, is a select group of musicians chosen through audition.

The instrumentation is based on the big bands of the 1930s and 1940s, and the repertoire includes a variety of jazz styles including bebop, swing, Latin and jazz-rock fusion. The ensemble gives students a way to learn and experience a truly American art form.

This ensemble provides the students with a means to experience a truly American art form and perform music in an idiom that would not normally be available in the school’s other musical performance groups.

ENTERTAINMENT ACTS

LUIS ALFREDO GARCIA

Luis “Lefty” Alfredo Garcia is a classical guitarist with formal training at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and the University of Central Florida. Garcia has also taken guitar lessons from world-renowned Spanish flamenco guitarist Juan Serrano.

He has been performing and entertaining in Central Florida for more than 20 years, and his high energy and love for the guitar is shown in his musical repertoire as he adds passion and improvisation into every song.

Garcia has developed a unique sound of LatinJazz and flamenco fusion that can simply be described as “smooth jazz on caffeine.” It’s not unusual to see people dancing during his performances.

MICHAEL PETROVICH TRIO

Michael Petrovich was 17 years old when he began playing guitar in his hometown of Detroit. Two years later, he moved to Orlando and enrolled in the University of Central Florida, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Classical Guitar Performance.

After graduating, Petrovich taught guitar at Seminole Community College, Rollins College and several other institutions. He has performed with various musical groups in most of the area’s major hotels and resorts. He has also performed in Hilton Head, Miami, Ecuador and Aruba.

Currently, Petrovich performs both solo and with his trio, which typically includes percussionists Steady Joseph, Oscar Guzman or Guy Hilsman. His repertoire is vast, but his true love is Latin or Spanish guitar. Petrovich’s influences include such greats as Al DiMeola, Strunz & Farah, Paco de Lucía, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Jesse Cook and Carlos Santana

JONNY MORA

Jonny Mora began playing guitar at age 9, taking lessons from the Puerto Rican indie-rock pioneer Willie Roman. At home, Mora’s parents always played 1980s rock. That, combined with playing the first Guitar Hero video game, led Mora to develop a taste for American and British classic rock.

His repertoire includes rock standards from across the decades, ranging from the 1960s to the present day. As a singer/songwriter, Mora draws from genres such as classic rock as well as blues, grunge, and 1970s-style acoustic pop songs.

WITH JAZZ TASTINGS BAND

Cooper’s musical journey began in Orlando at age 8 in the church children’s choir. As she continued her education, she became a member of the Jones High School choir, where she developed her musical tastes and interests.

Daphne

Cooper served as an MP for the United States Army, where she shared her gift as a member of the Army Entertainment USA Express Top 40 Band, entertaining armed forces personnel, civilians and distinguished guests around the world.

She’s a multitalented vocalist who works with an array of bands and musicians. She has been bringing her sultry, witty and crowd-pleasing act to stages in Orlando and the surrounding area for more than 10 years.

Cooper has also opened for Grammy-Award winning artists such as Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Buckwheat Zydeco, Trombone Shorty and Robert Cray, to name a few.

WINTER PARK MUSIC ACADEMY

Tavie and Adele Basarich started Winter Park Music Academy in 2016.

With a 3-year-old and a baby on the way, they were both teaching music lessons while Tavie was writing and recording original music. Tavie also began to collaborate with some of his students who wanted to pursue careers as musicians.

That’s when everything changed. One of Tavie’s students got a record deal and toured with Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter; another got a publishing contract. And the talented teacher’s songs were being placed in television programs and commercials.

Their student wait list grew, and Winter Park Music Academy was born. Shortly after that, so was the musical mom’s second baby. Today, WPMA is Winter Park’s largest music school and artist development program with more than 300 students.

WPMA offers private lessons and group classes in piano, voice, guitar, drums, ukulele, violin, viola, cello, saxophone, music production and more. If you write songs and want to take your music career to the next level, WPMA’s artist development program can get you there. All ages are welcome, so call or text 407-622-9588.

Jaquay (juh-kway) Pearce was introduced to the violin at age 7, as a student in her elementary school’s strings program, and has continued training and performing since age 16.

As a solo artist, Pearce loves to perform classical crossover selections, branching into genres such as pop, rock and R&B. She has performed for several major events, including the Orlando Fringe and Jingle Eve, as well as for corporate conventions and fashion shows.

Pearce performs with several bands and singer-songwriters, including EmiSunshine & The Rain, Crystal Bowersox (runner-up on American Idol) and Porter & Sayles (contestants on The Voice).

She’s also a member of the string quartet Violectric, Fretless Rock and Strings ETC, and has opened for acts such as Josh Groban and Joan Jett.

In her spare time, Pearce enjoys attending performing arts events and has an immense love for all things Motown. She takes pride in being a lefthanded violinist.

DAPHNE COOPER
JAQUAY PEARCE

ENTERTAINMENT ACTS

Tommy Bridges, a child prodigy in jazz music, started his career early. At age 13, he performed alongside actor George Segal and Conrad Janis of Mork and Mindy at the 1978 Sacramento Jazz festival.

At age 14, he recorded his first jazz album — which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Jazz LPs Chart in 1980. He also played the role of legendary jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke in the 1978 Playboy Jazz label film, Ain’t None of Them Play It Like Him Yet

He has performed for Robert De Niro, Richard Gere, Grace Jones and composer Jimmy Van Heusen, among others. In 1981, at age 16, he appeared at the Kool/Newport Jazz Festival. The Tommy Bridges Jazz Quartet performs at 40 regional and national events per year.

In 2018, Bridges began a collaboration with Miami native and Disney vocalist Katrina Mena Rick. Their music is a mix of classic jazz standards, big band, bossa nova and sambas along with music associated with the Rat Pack. They perform locally at VINIA on New England Avenue.

The Flying Horse Big Band is one of the premier performing ensembles from the University of Central Florida Music Department. The band has appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Netherlands, and has made numerous domestic appearances for festivals and concerts.

The band has featured Eric Alexander, Harry Allen, Bob Berg, Randy Brecker, Nick Brignola, Lou Donaldson, Terry Gibbs, Rodney Holmes, Kevin Mahogany, Mulgrew Miller, James Moody, Michael Mossman, John Swana, Marvin Stamm and Steve Turre.

In 2005, the band premiered Sam Rivers’ work for double big band with the legendary multiinstrumentalist’s Rivbea Orchestra. (Rivers, who moved to Orlando in the early 1990s, died in 2012.)

The Flying Horse Big Band has placed six albums on the national jazz charts, including Jazz Town, The Blues is Alright, Into the Mystic, Big Man on Campus, The Bat Swings, and most recently, Florida Rays. The latter two albums rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz Chart.

Former members of the band include musicians now performing on the Grammy telecast and various television shows in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville. Several others are now professors at universities around the country.

Visit flyinghorserecords.com to order the band’s recordings.

SEAN HOLCOMB

Florida native and Nashville recording artist Sean Holcomb brings soulful songwriting, heart-tingling vocals, footstomping guitar playing, irresistible personality and headturning stage presence together in one delightfully authentic country music package.

With songs like “American Dream,” “My Way or the Highway” “Let You Leave,” “Drinking for Two” and the barnburner “South of the South,” Holcomb is an artist and songwriter who stands out in today’s world of musical redundancy.

His rising popularity has come as no surprise to the Orlando native’s devoted Central Florida following. In 2021, Holcomb was once again named by readers of Orlando Weekly as No. 1 Best Country Act in Orlando. The top ranking marked the second time since 2019 that he won the No. 1 spot and his fourth consecutive year in the competition’s top three.

In a short time, Holcomb has shared the stage with such stars as John Anderson, Daryle Singletary, Rhett Akins, Lucero, Kenny Chesney, Mo Pitney, The Cadillac Three, LoCash, Thomas Rhett, Drake White and many others.

Often compared to Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johnson and Travis Tritt, Holcomb’s original songwriting and distinctive sound is best described as a blend of vintage country, country rock and Americana.

RICKY SYLVIA AND THE BUZZCATZ

Winter Park’s own Ricky Sylvia has been entertaining Central Floridians for nearly 50 years — and he and his band The Buzzcatz have been local favorites since 1998.

Their annual performance at The Alfond Inn’s New Year’s Eve Gala is a Winter Park tradition — and one that continues in 2022. From Rat Pack classics and jazz standards to Motown’s 1970s and 1980s classics, the Buzzcatz’s repertoire spans more than six decades of cover songs and originals and features a 10-piece group with a full rhythm section, horns and percussion. Also featured is vocalist Carmen Harrell.

JUDGES AND POSTER ARTIST

WILLIAM SCHAAF

William Schaaf is a Floridabased artist who has worked with equine themes for more than 55 years. He is a painter, sculptor, writer and educator. He works in stone, wood and clay, which are sometimes translated into bronze editions.

Schaaf graduated from the University of Florida with a BFA and the University of Illinois with an MFA, both with a focus on painting and printmaking. He has worked as a professor, lecturer and workshop facilitator, and was an early advisor for the Art in Medicine Program at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, which has become a national model.

He has taught at dozens of universities and colleges in Florida and the Midwest and has presented workshops and classes at the Penland School of Crafts and the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. His work has been presented in more than 100 group shows and 30 one-person shows in Florida and nationally.

In addition, his work is included in many private and corporate collections and is on display at numerous museums across Florida.

MONICA BLISS

Monica Bliss picked up a paintbrush for the first time in the fall of 2020 — and the art that emerged caught her by surprise. Today, Bliss uses her gift to infuse homes with joy by creating meaningful artwork that will last for generations.

Bliss believes that nature has a profound way of grounding us amid the chaos of everyday life and leans heavily on its inspiration. She describes herself as an impressionistic artist who uses acrylics to create emotive works from her home studio in Orlando.

Wind Song was inspired by the peacocks who parade majestically around Winter Park. After being commissioned to create a realistic peacock for a local client, she wanted to explore this beautiful bird in a more impressionistic style.

The first peacocks were brought to Winter Park in 1950 by Hugh McKean, a former president of Rollins College, and his wife, Jeannette Genius McKean, granddaughter of Charles Morse and founder of the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. A peacock has graced Winter Park’s seal since 2004.

Wind Song was created with a palette knife using acrylics on canvas, and the original measures 16-by-20 inches.

NOFA DIXON

Nofa Dixon has been a professional artist and an active member of the Jacksonville community for more than 40 years. She taught drawing, painting, ceramics and sculpture at William M. Raines High School for 12 years, developing one of the strongest secondary-school art programs in Duval County.

Dixon spent another 12 years serving as curator of education at the Jacksonville Art Museum (now the Museum of Contemporary Art). Between 2001 and 2019, she served as an associate professor in the Department of Art & Design at the University of North Florida, where she taught drawing, design I and II, painting and art in public places.

Together with her students, she facilitated the creation of 18 murals and mosaic images that embellish the UNF campus. Dixon recently retired from UNF as a professor emerita and is looking forward to leading a very creative life.

Her art has been exhibited throughout the United States and is included in numerous public, private and corporate collections.
