The next step would be a meeting, social rather than business, for the finance committees of the different parishes. In the discussions which followed the Bishop said that there would be no fewer than three priests in the new parish, based on the current pastoral area and these would offer nine masses each weekend; currently there are thirteen. He thought the progress to one parish in this area, due to the diverse nature of the different churches and congregations they served, would be slower rather than quicker. (The fact is that he is due to retire within the next three years and all expect the process to be completed by then). Finally, in all the discussions and decisions held by the Leadership Team, he asked where was the second main strand of his pastoral vision, namely, mission. The Leadership Team could only say that its work had caused everyone to look inwards at structures rather than outwards to spreading the gospel. In future, Helen Sutherland, chair of the Parish Pastoral Council, will represent St Mary’s and St Patrick’s on the team.
