INTERVIEW QUESTIONS-RICHARD RAMSEY Where did you grow up, and a bit about your childhood? I was born in Memphis but grew up in a small town of Brighton, TN. (about 25 miles north of Memphis.) I was the typical boy; I hung out with my friends, swam in the creek and played little baseball. It was in high school that I became interest in photography. As a teenager, we were asked about what type of job we would like to have. I was always interested in tinkering with electronics and photography. Though I leaned toward photography, I thought it was out of my realm because of the expense. In 12th grade, our school began a photography program that allowed us to work in the darkroom and there I begin doing work for the school’s annual (yearbook). It was through this process that the local photographer, Mr. Kenneth Cobb,

discovered my overwhelming desire to learn and just raw passion for photography. He offered me my first job soon after graduation.

Where did you go to college? University of Hard Knocks‌.just kidding. I began my photography career right out of high school. I was lucky to experience a lot with my first job. A lot of learning happens with experience, but I quickly began asking more questions. I would read photography books on lighting and composition for hours. My passion gave me the drive to study and soak in everything I could get my hands on relating to photography

Who were some early mentors? I have always tried to pull inspiration from anyone I feel is

doing exceptional work. Two photographers I was exposed to during the 80s and remain friends with are Michael Thompson and Michael Taylor. They are master photographers and the quality of their work is exceptional, their work has always inspired me and continues to do so today.

RAMSEY

What was your inspiration to become an artist? Photography has always been an interest to me and luckily, it has become my life’s work. It has changed drastically from the time I began but it has been for the better. Technology has allowed me to paint an image and to create something rather than just record something. It is this freedom that has given me the greatest inspiration.

Tell me about the work with digital. Have you had “process resistance” people that balk at an image being produced in part digitally, if so how have you overcome that? At this point, there is no resistance to digital photography. It is simply the way things are done and will be done. I believe clients have now come to expect all the possibilities that digital has to offer.

Where does your inspiration come from? My inspiration, more and more, is coming from painters. I have been in photography for over 35 years and it is hard to find someone that is truly doing something new. In many cases the photography is lacking of emotion, great painters always express emotion in their paintings.

Tell us about the message in your art. What would you like to express through your creations? I consider myself traditional. My goal when creating an image is that it will be timeless. You here this expression a lot “Timeless Image,” timeless images are the heirlooms that we hang on to, the images that we cherish, not snap shots that we laugh at years later because of the crazy clothes, etc. I do not feel a Timeless portrait can be done by latching on the latest trends in photography. I realize this is an individual thing but for me, the message is, Timeless.
