The Holiday Agenda To you and your family, good cheer! Thanks for checking in on this, our second issue of The Agenda, Austin’s quarterly issued LGBT magazine focused on the “gay agenda” of economic equality, produced in a collaborative effort between the Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and The Austin Chronicle. And welcome to the holidays! As a quarterly publication, this issue spans Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, and even Mardi Gras. You know what that means. Well, sure… Presents. But also it means family. While that topic can be as comforting as Aunt Nancy’s sturdy old quilt, to so many in our LGBTQ fold it can sit like a scratchy old burlap bag. Some of our first encounters with tolerance and acceptance happen – for good or bad – in our natural-born families. No wonder so many of us have wider definitions and constructs of that cherished concept. Some of us have had to create it. After all, we all want the same thing: to love and be loved, to feel secure in the nest of a heart or a tribe that cares for us. Broadening that scope a bit, it’s easy to see why the “gay community” comes alight during the holidays. For those of us happily ensconced in our home nests, we know the comfort of immediate family – whether it be natural born or intentionally blessed. For those of us alone during this season – by choice or by circumstance – it’s natural to want to connect, and new traditions are born, whether they be annual holiday parties thrown by your favorite LGBT nonprofits, exchanging gifts that reflect a larger sense of community (support local! support LGBT!), or a free holiday dinner served at a bar. Whatever your traditions (personally, we cannot wait to order our King Cake in January), we hope your holidays are dandy. Kate X Messer | The Agenda Editor-in-chief

all in the fa Family is where the heart is.
We invited a number of local folks to sit for portraits with their families. Thanks to these lovelies for taking the time during these crazy busy holidays to share their concept of kin. How we create family speaks to our strength, our passions, our hope, and our love.

Designer Roosevelt Cevallos delivers the wham, the bam, and t By Kate X Messer | Photos by Devaki Knowles
There once was a cobbler who worked very very hard and was very honest, and he had just enough leather to make one pair of shoes. Then the one pair of shoes became 10 pairs of shoes, which then magically appeared on the feet of gorgeous models who seemed to have slinked in from some 1980s Robert Palmer video shoot… Okay, he’s not really a cobbler and elves do not come out at night to tool his leather for him, but shoe designer Roosevelt Cevallos – whose recent runway debuts have set tongues to wagging in this town – sure feels like he’s been living a fairy tale since moving to Austin in 2011. The setting is at his home in Travis Heights; he is working on a pair of slate-blue glitter pumps in his workshop. It’s neat as a pin and wellput-together – just like Roosevelt.
10
Kate X Messer: There’s a lot involved in this. You’re not just hanging some baubles on some shoes. Roosevelt Cevallos: Exactly. It’s not just: Oh! Bling out my shoes! It’s not just about the aesthetics: It’s geometry and engineering. Anybody can stick rhinestones on a pair of shoes. Ultimately, the shoes have to be walked in. This pair is a rush order for a Monday video shoot with Kwanza Jones. KXM: Oh, the dance diva out of L.A. RC: She’s very theatrical, like Lady Gaga. I love working with clients like her because I get to be really creative with jewelry, trims, anything that will make a shoe pop. KXM: How did your love affair with shoes begin? RC: It was Halloween, 2009. I’d made this little gold dress, and it

was really blingy. But I didn’t have a pair of shoes extravagant enough. So I ordered a plain pair of gold glitter pumps from Fredericks [of Hollywood] and added all the trim and the spikes. And here’s my first baby! [He shows a pair of gorgeous gold pumps festooned with spikes.] They’re my prototype.
a summer there. She was on the line… in heels. [laughter] Everyone else was in sneakers and boots, real casual, and there my mom would be: Click*click*click*click*click!
KXM: A star is born!
RC: I grew up in Danbury, Connecticut, I watched Gilligan’s Island and loved He-Man. I have a sister, Maria; she’s two years older. She was a cheerleader. We’d practice routines at home, and I would do splits and cartwheels, and we’d practice our smiles in the mirror. We always used to play dress up. I don’t know who instigated that. me or her, but I always ended up in my mom’s wedding gown. My mom is really petite: She’s five feet tall. She was like Sophia Loren. She got married in this tiny, white lace mini-dress. I was the only one who could fit into it. I think my sister may have been a little bit bitter about that. I don’t know how they didn’t know I was gay. Seriously.
RC: The minute the shoes hit the street, girls were like, “Where’d you get those shoes!” Oh my god!” KXM: So, you started getting noticed. RC: Friends began to tell me I should open up a costume shop: “You should do shoes, you should do clothes!” But it was always just a craft, a hobby. I never really pursued it seriously. Not until I moved to Austin. There’s that whole “Keeping It Weird” thing, here, but also, there’s a scene of extravagant performers, burlesque artists… They love this kind of stuff. Even guys. They fall in love with the shoes, and they want their girlfriends in them. In fact, I just got a special order for a pair of kinky shoes – a pair of red stilettos - a special pair for her. Later, he called to thank me for their love life. So I’m not only improving shoes, I’m improving people’s love lives! Apparently I’m a sex therapist, as well. [laughter] KXM: Whose work inspires you? RC: Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo. But you want to know who my biggest influence is? KXM: Of course… RC: That would be my mother. My mother is just me with big eyes. She’s a total diva. She’s all about fashion and always has tons of shoes. She’s like Imelda Marcos. KXM: Of course she was! [laughter] RC: My mom worked in a manufacturing plant; she worked for Pitney Bowes. I worked
KXM: What were you like as a kid? Do you have siblings?
KXM: Are your parents together? RC: My parents got divorced when I was three years old. My mom was mom and dad. He had moved to Canada. He was still a good father, just long distance. KXM: So, your mom raised you two? RC: Yes. My mom, she wasn’t the type to take me out and play ball. [laughter] We went shopping. That was our sport. “Put on your sneakers! Lace up! We’re going shopping!” My mother is the type of woman who will go into a mall and has to go through

every single rack, every single store. Going shopping with her is like getting your teeth pulled out without any novacaine. You need therapy after it. But we were the best dressed kids in grammar school. We were the only grade schoolers running around in Jordache, Sergio Valente, and Gloria Vanderbilt. No other kids, and certainly no other boys had them, but there I was in my super tight Jordache jeans. KXM: You credit mom as your fashion influence. What did you learn from her? RC: Style… the way clothes fall on a person… proportions. When you’re vertically challenged, there are certain things that you just don’t wear. Never buy a long coat because it just makes you look short. Always wear a tight pant leg, never wide bottoms. She had no idea what she was grooming. She wanted me to be an architect. KXM: Have you made a pair of shoes for your mother? RC: Funny you should ask. She asks me that question almost every week, “Where are my shoes? Where are my shoes? But nothing too crazy!” [laughter] KXM: You have a significant other, yes? How did you meet and does he live here? RC: Yes, he does. I met Robert in Connecticut in 2001. He worked on Wall Street and was on a leave of absence when 9-11 happened. They’d called him to come back to work to start up satellite office in near Stanford. He’d only been in town for 24 hours when we met. We exchanged numbers, went out on a couple of dates, and have been together ever since. It’s been a whirlwind romance. KXM: Who would you most like to design for?
me in touch with him, so I brought in my shoes and laid them out on a table. Stephen comes in, you know, and dips his glasses. [laughter] He looks them over and says, “No! I can’t have them in my show. They’re going to upstage my clothes. But we’ll talk.” He called me a while after that and said “Hey! I’m watching Kinky Boots, and I just had this epiphany: I want to devote a segment in my show just to your shoes. The models will all have the same look: The same black dress, sunglasses the same wig. The only thing that will be different will be the shoes. They’ll come out to ‘In These Shoes’ from the Kinky Boots.” I loved the idea. I thought it was a perfect fit. That was all his concept. KXM: So, Cattivo and Stephen’s show were your runway debuts? You’d never shown before?
RC: Alexander McQueen. I just love being extravagant! Oh, and [Austin designer and columnist] Stephen Moser. I can’t tell you how much I owe him and [Austin designer] Benson Roberts for putting me on the map here.
RC: Correct.
They had me in their show for Cattivo. I modeled for Benson. I remember showing up in his studio for a fitting, and I saw Stephen’s clothing line. I thought, Oh my god, I can make shoes that would be fantastic for this. Benson put
RC: I’ve never had to think in those terms before. It’s just starting to happen so quickly. My ultimate would be to have a base line of shoes with my name on them and still do custom orders for very unique situations and customers.
KXM: Your next big launch is your website on January 18. When you close your eyes, where do you see your next steps taking you?

Initially, it’s going to be anything goes. People will be able to see samples of my designs. Can I have that in a size 12 or can you make something smiler to that but I need more blue or gold or feathers. That will be a starting point. Eventually I want to get to a place where I can have a manufacturer make a base shoe with some of the trim and studs on them.
ers. These are intended for everyone. I wear my own product. I know how it fits. I know where it’s going to hurt. I know from building enough shoes where to place a spike so that it doesn’t hurt your foot. There are certain pressure points when you wear a heel.
It takes a lot of time to build each shoe. Between settings you’ve got to have curing time for the adhesives.
RC: As Austin grows, the bar is raised. So many external influences coming in from New York, L.A., and Chicago; fashion is booming here. When I first decided to move here, I had no idea. There are so many creative people here. Austin has so many great local designers who do amazing work. Amazing! I’m really impressed. I can’t wait to start working with some of them.
KXM: It’s not just stringing some bling. They’re shoes. They take the most heat out of any piece of your wardrobe. RC: These are not just shoes for perform-

$hop Like You Mean It Good intentions pave the way to gift alternatives by Brandon Watson
The holidays can be difficult for the thoughtful giver. Your niece’s favorite store gives same-sex benefits but uses sweatshop labor. Your uncle’s favorite restaurant uses locally sourced food but makes donations to raging homophobes. Researching every brand would take hours and hours. Maybe this year, you’ll just bake instead. While we’re sure your flax-chia clusters are delicious, your conscientiousness could use a little cool. Hence this guilt-free gift guide. Each item has passed our test – providing sustainable, healthy, fair-wage alternatives to big-box sameness. Most of our picks are local and all are LGBT-friendly. Better still, these are all goodies that will dazzle long after they are unwrapped. We’re not saying you owe us, but we do know where to get some great thank-you gifts. INSTEAD OF A GENERIC BOUQUET… GIFT A LIVING MINIATURE FROM GREAT OUTDOORS
Nothing says romance like a hacking cough. Long stemmed roses add 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere each Valentine’s Day. If you really want to impress your crush, skip the bouquet and gift something a little greener, like a locally cultivated miniature garden. You can even gain extra points by offering to xeriscape that teeny yard. There’s a reason people are always having affairs with gardeners. 2730 S. Congress, 448-2992, gonursery.com
INSTEAD OF A MASS-PRODUCED CANDLE… GIFT A SEDA FRANCE HAND-POURED CANDLE
Your mom has Lee Jofa upholstery, a collection of shagreen boxes, and fresh flowers in every room. There’s no way she wants her house smelling like an apple strudel. Locally owned and Oprah approved, Seda France’s handpoured candles will look great on the entry credenza. The Japanese Quince 10 oz. candle adorably packaged in a toile pagoda box will leave her speechless. You thought she’d never stop asking when you’re going to get married. INSTEAD OF GAY-UNFRIENDLY GYM CHAIN MEMBERSHIPS… GIFT A WORK IT BOOT CAMP
If you made a commitment to your boo to get healthy in the New Year, think twice about getting partner memberships at Gold’s Gym. CEO Robert Rowling uses his profits to fight marriage equality. Getting in shape is hard enough without carrying around all that extra weight. Work It Personal Training provides an alternative that is friendly to your family and hot for your bod. 426-2336, workittraining.com

INSTEAD OF STOCKING STUFFERS FROM BIG BOXES… GIFT PRIDE SOCKS
Let’s face it: We all have enough fleece to insulate the Smithsonian. Instead of hitting up Old Navy, rock the stocking with an assortment of Pride Socks. These rainbow tubes are perfect for everyone on your list – from your roller derby-obsessed niece to your shy Lady Gaga worshipping cousin. And if you really want your house to don its gay apparel, hang a few of these from the mantle. pridesocks.com
INSTEAD OF GIFTING TAYLOR SWIFTS WONDERSTRUCK PERFUME… GIFT JARDIN DE LOUIS BY HOVÉ (AVAILABLE AT COCO COQUETTE)
With apologies to Taylor Swift, we’re not Wonderstruck at the idea of smelling like the pop princess. We like scents with a little more nuance – like Hové’s Jardin de Louis. Hové’s layered perfumes evoke the decadence of Versailles, the perfect accessory for one of Coco Coquette’s fantastical wigs. Give a dram to your drag mother and she might lose her head. After all, Marie Antoinette was the original diva. 2109 E. Cesar Chavez, 344-9173, coco-coquette.com
INSTEAD OF MASS-PRODUCED JEWELRY… GIFT A ONE-OF-A-KIND HAND-MINED RING FROM ADINA MILLS (AVAILABLE AT FEATHERS)
Anthropologie’s baubles give good face, but you don’t want your fashionista sister to think you are an amateur. Be a style pro by gifting a work of art. Adina Mills designs show stopping jewelry out of mineral wonders hand-mined in Arkansas. Each ring is hand-made with pride instead of mass-manufactured in a sweat shop. Better still, each ring and necklace is one of a kind. Your sis’s friends will be green with jealousy. 1700-B S. Congress, 912-9779, feathersboutiquevintage.blogspot.com
INSTEAD OF A MAIL-ORDER FOOD BASKET… GIFT A GREENLING LOCAL BOX
Sure Harry & David’s towers make an impressive sight, but our teeth start hurting the minute we hear “Moose Crunch.” Besides, they don’t hold a candle to Greenling’s Local Box. Greenling curates the weekly selection from the best local farms, allowing your foodie uncle to enjoy nature’s bounty without the carbon footprint. greenling.com
INSTEAD OF DRUG STORE CHOCOLATE… GIFT LIFE-TREK CHOCOLATES
Study after study show that chocolate can be great for your health, but you won’t find the fountain of youth in a Whitman’s Sampler. Tell your partner that you want her around for years to come by taking a suggestion from Life-Trek. They distribute antioxidants cleverly disguised in cocoa, with no alkalization, milk fats, or hydrogenated oils. Who says healthy can’t be hedonistic? johndabbs.youthfulchocolate.com/register

INSTEAD OF BUYING YOUR POOCH PLASTIC TOYS… TREAT YOUR DOG TO A DAY AT THE SPA AT MUD PUPPIES OR DOGBOYS DOG RANCH
Pity the poor Rottweiler when it’s time to open gifts. She turns her nose up at rawhide chews. This year treat your best friend to something a little different. How about a day at the salon at Mud Puppies or a day chasing squirrels at DogBoys’ private dog park? She’ll be wagging her tail faster than you can say “good dog.” Mud Puppies, 249-2498, mud-puppies.com; DogBoys, 251-7600, dogboys.com
INSTEAD OF ORDERING BOOKS ONLINE…GIFT A RARE BOOK FROM SOUTH CONGRESS BOOKS
We’ve all had a crush on one of our professors, but we rarely recommend going for extra credit. Still, if you’re hell bent on creating a scandale straight out of Madame Bovary, at least do it with class. Amazon may be selling Moby Dicks for pennies on the dollar, but all those paperbacks create tons of landfill waste. Avoid the lecture, and buy a first edition from South Congress Books. They’re better for the environment, which will make you look smart. She or he may even allow you skip the final. 1608 S. Congress, 916-8882, southcongressbooks.com
INSTEAD OF A DEPARTMENT STORE LAMP… GIFT A UNIQUE, VINTAGE SHOWPIECE FROM UNCOMMON OBJECTS
Bribery never hurts when you’re up for a big promotion. Your boss keeps hinting that she needs something to spotlight her red King Louis chair, but those mass-produced lamps are as exciting as spreadsheets. Show off your synergy by gifting a one-of-a-kind vintage illuminator. She’ll need those few extra watts for signing your holiday bonus. 1512 S. Congress, 442-4000, uncommonobjects.com

Don We Now Our Kink Apparel Sex-positive locals make their business your pleasure by Andy Campbell, Rob Cohen, and Kate X Messer
With Rihanna hitting the charts with songs about S&M and every E-reading suburbanite uploading Fifty Shades of Grey, one might presume that we’re in a cultural kink-enassaince. Well, what better way to gauge the growth of our economy than by checking the state of the multi-billion dollar sex industry? While things may be tight for mom & pop shops in general, Austin’s sex-positive businesses keep growing. The evidence is all over: Regular “gear nights” at both the Iron Bear and the Chain Drive are bringing burly kinklings out of the woodwork, monthly Bedpost Confessions erotic-reading performances fill the clubs, and entrepreneurial Austinites are launching their own organic lubricant and customizable sex toy businesses, as local retailers double-up on their kink-stock. So whip out that leather…wallet, the safe-word is “Capitalism,” and let’s leave behind the charmed circle of vanilla sex for something a bit more exciting, shall we? Q TOYS This new kid on the block – only in the sense that they’ve recently opened a brickand-mortar operation – specializes in the sale of phthalate-free, artisanal, and high-quality sex goodies. Toys from mass retailers often contain pththlate, toxic industrial compounds that have been banned from children’s toys. Talk about killing the mood! Q Toys only does business with vendors who don’t cut corners. That ensures that every toy sold is safe for your most intimate parts. Woman-operated and queer-friendly, this pleasure palace also gives part of their profits to local queer charities – so you can feel good, while feeling good. Regardless of how you identify, or what your kink may be, Q Toys has got you covered – or strategically uncovered, as the case may be. 6800 Burnet, 772-1614, info@qtoysaustin, qtoysaustin.com
TAPELENDERS/SKIVIES Whether you are into hanky panky or “spank me Daddy,” Tapelenders has an ever-expanding variety of adult toys, clothing, and fetish gear for the queer. They are open every day right in the crotch of downtown to serve your naughty, nice, and nasty needs. Mild to wild, they’ve got something in your style. 1114 W. VIXEN CREATIONS Sorry, technophiles. These magnificent ding dongs, etc., are not made by your beloved robots. They are made by hand, by sturdy human hands, and crafted by people, not machines. Vixen has been
manufacturing and providing sex toys to retail outlets and the masses, mostly from their home-base in San Francisco since 1992. But in 2010, they opened up a small plant in East Austin, and since then, a glorious wad of their inventory is crafted by Texas hands. And craft, they do! All kinds of things, from dildos made from their patented VixSkin, so realistic, it’ll make ya mama blush to some technicolored wangs that would look great on that beloved robot of yours. They also have toys that can slide right onto a Hitatchi Magic Wand and even a sheath that can cover “the Little General” himself, when he’s feeling a bit, errrmmm, how shall we say… less than Ten-Hut. 415/824-0684, vixencreations.com

FORBIDDEN FRUIT Paradise still exists in little corners on the planet. On Austin’s beloved North Loop vintage strip, you can find it at Forbidden Fruit, where there is no shame, there are no snakes to talk you into anything, and no exile for getting down in style. Since 1981, Forbidden Fruit has been a cornerstone of Austin’s kink community, offering toy partiess, lingerie lessons, and weekly sexy workshops. That and their inventory has been doing our dirty work for decades. So don’t be shy, take a bite of their vast selection of sexual accoutrement.
