NOVEMBER 2017

Fall POA Community Events A Success! Over the past couple months, your Stone Oak POA coordinated and hosted two of our popular annual events- Donation and Dumping Day, and Arbor Day! Donation and Dumping Day has proven to benefit us all- it cuts down on unwanted items being dumped illeagally, thus keeping our greenbelts clean of debris, and helps residents dispose of many unwanted large, bulky items, such as furniture and appliances. The dump trailer is coordinated with the City of San Antonio free of charge through their Dial-A-Trailer program. Our Stone Oak community regularly fills at least three trash trucks, and one extra-large metal hauler each Donation and Dumping event. In addition, we always invite a community organization to accept donations of gently used items. This time the Disabled Veterans benefited from your generosity, and filled two trucks with furniture, appliances, clothing, toys, and other donations. This is always a VERY popular event. Although many residents have requested this event take place quarterly, due to the City’s requirement of at least six months between events, only twice a year is possible. In October, we also hosted our annual Arbor Day event. This event is coordinated with the City of San Antonio City Forester, who this year donated 200 trees as part of the City’s Tree Canopy Initiative. New Earth donated bags of mulch and compost, and SAWS, Bartlett Tree Experts, and the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District were on hand, along with other gardening experts from our community, to share advice, and answer questions. Several different types of trees were available, and residents were able to discuss their needs, thus ensuring the best tree for their purpose. Thank you to the following people for helping make these events a continued success for our property owners: Mike Espenson, Andrew Gutierrez and SWMD staff (City of San Antonio Dial-A-Trailer), Ross Hosea and staff (City of San Antonio City Forester), Cathy Justice (City of San Antonio Horticulturist), Mike Lininger (New Earth), Mark Peterson (SAWS Conservation), Emily Weiner Stone Oak - November 2017 - Vol 22 No 11

(Trinity Glen Rose), Jacob West (Bartlett Tree Experts), George Wissmann (Trinity Glen Rose), and the POA Board of Directors and staff. These events are coordinated by the POA for the benefit of the Stone Oak community, and our landlord is gracious to allow us to utilize our office parking lot. The Board has discussed the possibility of moving the Donation and Dumping event to another parking lot in the Stone Oak area to ease traffic patterns- so be sure to watch our announcements and website calendar as any change in location will be publicized. To ensure you know the 2018 dates of these events, we suggest you register on our website, www. StoneOakPOA.com, so a reminder arrives in your inbox a few days prior to the event. There will be Donation and Dumping dates scheduled for the Spring and the Fall, as well as another Fall Arbor Day event, and a Spring Earth Day event with free shredding. Even if you have provided our office with your email, you will need to register on the website to receive e-blasts. We only send about six per year, and you can request to be removed from the list at any time. Your information is not shared with any outside entities.

Stone Oak Commercial and Residential Property Owners Please ensure the POA office has your current mailing information – the Property Owner is responsible for notifying the office of any address changes. Invoices will be mailed mid-December, and will include important Annual Meeting information. If you do not receive your January Stone Oak POA assessment invoice by early January, please contact the POA office at 210-490-9481. Remember, your January assessment invoice payment must be received in the POA office by January 31, 2018 – as of February 1st, late fees are automatically applied to any open balance. You may pay by check, money order, or online at www.StoneOakPOA.com. Many of our residential property owners prefer to pay for the entire year in one payment. Residential and Commercial property owners are always welcome to pay in advance. If you choose to do so, we suggest you contact the POA office first to ensure the correct amount. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 2

Your Stone Oak POA If you own property within Stone Oak boundaries- residential or commercial – you pay assessments to the Stone Oak POA. This also means as a Stone Oak property owner, you are expected to abide by the Stone Oak Master Plan guidelines, and adhere to Stone Oak POA restrictions and policies. You can find a copy of all Stone Oak governing documents- including By-Laws and policies – under the “Governing Documents” tab of our website. As a Stone Oak Commercial Property Owner, which includes freestanding businesses, strip centers, and apartment complexes, your assessments are calculated based on points and square footage in accordance with the Stone Oak By-Laws. Commercial property assessments are due quarterly (January, April, July, and October.) The Stone Oak By-Laws state assessments for each Stone Oak Residential Lot is calculated at 1 point. Stone Oak Residential Property Owners pay only $58.00 semi-annually (January and July.)

Mark Your Calendars! Saturday, November 25th is Small Business Saturday Get out and support our Stone Oak community businesses!

More detail regarding how assessments are calculated can be found under our “Governing Documents” tab on our website, specifically on page 23 of the “Stone Oak Second Amended Bylaws,” Article XV, Member’s Obligations. Each residential community within Stone Oak boundaries has its own Homeowners Association (HOA.) Your HOA takes care of everything within your neighborhood, and the Stone Oak POA takes care of the common areas outside the neighborhood, within the Stone Oak Master Plan established boundaries. The Stone Oak POA utilizes assessments for the following: • To ensure architectural guidelines set forth by the Stone Oak Master Plan are upheld • Maintenance and upkeep of the 11 miles of landscaped medians within Stone Oak boundaries • Annual projects to beautify the common areas, and keep landscaping to standard • Projects that assist in conservation efforts, such as the transition from spray irrigation to drip • Implement and manage other projects or events that benefit Stone Oak Property Owners The Stone Oak POA is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of five residential representatives, five commercial representatives, and a Board-elected Chairman. Each Director is an individual or entity that is a member of the Stone Oak Property Owners Association, and therefore a Stone Oak property owner. Once elected at the Association Annual Meeting of Members, they serve a two-year term, and may be placed on the ballot at the end of the term for re-election if desired. (When originally formed, terms were purposely staggered so not all seats would be open for election at the same time.) Directors are volunteers, are not compensated for their time, and act in accordance with the Governing Documents of the Association. Many are also involved with POA Committees, such as the Architectural Review Committee, Neighborhood Representatives Committee, Finance Committee, etc. Directors are required to adhere to all directives as outlined in the Stone Oak By-Laws and Policies. We hope this helps you better understand how your POA works for you, and remind you to visit our website, www.StoneOakPOA. com, for more information and details regarding your POA! Reagan launched the Young People’s Concert in 2000 as part of a Northeast ISD initiative to provide an opportunity for elementary students in each cluster to hear a live performance of Symphonic music. Reagan Director of Orchestras, Sixto Elizondo, says, “An event like this can be a major motivating factor for an aspiring young musician. As part of our presentation, we encourage all students to pursue a form of extra-curricular activity because involvement in such activities provides students opportunities to create critical outlets for self-expression and cultivates environments to develop life skills like social interactions and self-discipline.” Not only did Reagan cluster students attend the concert, but a former student of Mr. Elizondo’s was in the audience as music teacher himself. Wilderness Oak Music Teacher, Jose Benites, attributes much of his desire to pursue a musical career to Mr. Elizondo. “Music is a way to be creative and expressive,” said Benites, “the music program here at NEISD and teachers like Mr. Elizondo, make music so much fun and allow students to express themselves through their instruments or vocals.”

The nationally recognized and award-winning Ronald Reagan High School Orchestra is comprised of seven performing ensembles, two full orchestras and five string orchestras, with total student enrollment of 210. The Reagan Orchestra program offers education, performance, competition, and community outreach opportunities to the students. Students perform six concerts annually, often partnering with other Reagan Fine Arts programs, for the community to include the middle and elementary school cluster, senior living facilities, special events, and other outreach initiatives. The Reagan Orchestra has even traveled abroad to perform in high profile opera houses and theaters as well as participated in globally recognized orchestra clinics. The Reagan Orchestra has a longstanding tradition of excellence in performance, competition, and service under the direction of Director and Teacher, Sixto Elizondo IV.

The Ronald Reagan High School Symphony Orchestra hosted the Reagan Elementary School Cluster of seven schools and 1300 students for the Young People’s Concert. The Elementary Schools include Canyon Ridge, Hardy Oak, Las Lomas, Stone Oak, Tuscany Heights, Vineyard Ranch, and Wilderness Oak.

Mr. Elizondo adds, “The study of music can have multiple positive influences on a student’s success because it encompasses physical skills, aural training, and critical thinking. It is an honor to introduce this music to the young students in our cluster.”

Local Girl Wins 2017 Miss Texas Mya Blondell Johnson, daughter of Blondell Whiting Johnson and Eric Johnson, recently earned the prestigious title of 2017 National American Miss Texas Junior Pre-Teen in Houston, Texas. She was chosen from amongst onehundred and thirty-seven candidates from Texas. She was selected as the state queen on the basis of her poise, personality, communication skills (interview and public speaking skills) and community service. Johnson also won Miss Personality and Miss Talent. She has earned the distinct honor of representing her community, city and state at the National pageant, to be held in Anaheim, California at Disneyland, in November. She will compete against queens, representing their respective states. Her trip to California will include a photo shoot with all of the state queens at the Disney Castle, a tour of Hollywood and Santa Monica Beach. The National American Miss pageants are dedicated to celebrating America’s greatness and encouraging its future leaders. Each year, the NAM pageants awards 1.5 million dollars in cash, scholarships and prizes to recognize and assist the development of young woman nationwide. Pageants are held in each state for girls ages four to eighteen, in five different age divisions. Mya Blondell Johnson is a happy, warm spirit, nine-year old girl from San Antonio, Texas. She enjoys volunteering at church, writing short stories, Robotics, singing, dancing, modeling, gymnastics, swimming and theater. She is also a member of an elite jumprope team, the Jumping Dragons, with performances at events such as NCAA Basketball games and professional sporting events. She describes herself as a great friend and as a person with a passion for making people smile. Her goal is to become a dentist. She says she decided 4 years ago that she wanted to be a dentist. She feels that winning Miss Texas provides her with a greater opportunity to promote her message. With a huge smile, Johnson says, “I’m changing the world one smile at a time.” Johnson has also been an active volunteer with San Antonio Pets Alive for three years and with her church and school. Most recently, she volunteered at her church, Community Bible Church (CBC), San Antonio, TX during its “Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts”. Johnson promotes positive energy with her smile and encourages everyone to be the reason someone smiles today. Has anyone in your family received an award, recognition or special anniversary? Cooking Safety: Checklist T Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. T If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking. T Keep things that can catch fire — potholders, oven mitts, paper or plastic bags, curtains — away from your stovetop. T Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and can catch fire if it comes in contact with a gas flame or electric burner. T Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. T If you have a stove fire, when in doubt, just get out and call the fire department. T Keep an oven mitt and lid nearby when you’re cooking. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting leave the lid on until the pan is completely cool. T In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you or your clothing. After a fire, the oven should be checked and/or serviced before being used again. T Open microwaved food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam from a container of microwaved food or the food itself can cause burns. T Never heat a baby bottle in a microwave oven because it heats liquids unevenly. Heat baby bottles in warm water. T Treat a burn right away, putting it in cool water. Cool the burn for three to five minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth. If the burn is bigger than your fist, or if you have any questions, get medical help right away. T Think Green! Unplug small appliances when not in use.

NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.)
