A Letter to Our Readers
Here we go – a shiny, factory-fresh new year. Some interesting folks checked out as last year ended, including the brilliant Peter O’Toole. Lawrence of Arabia notwithstanding, his two best films were about actors and movies, and about that tricky space between reality and fantasy. In My Favorite Year, he’s an Errol Flynn-like 1950’s movie idol that a young writer has to keep sober long enough to do a live TV comedy show, and he absolutely nails the devious director in The Stunt Man. “If God could do the tricks that we can do,” his character explains, “he’d be a happy man.” Tom Laughlin wrote, produced, directed, and starred in Billy Jack, a mix of martial arts and early 1970’s counterculture. Good line about putting his right foot upside someone’s face (spoiler – it was hapkido master Bong Soo Han’s foot), and a good Seventies antiwar song One Tin Soldier. Finally, just before press time, country legend Ray Price passed. Too many great songs to quote, but for his very un-PC take on wisdom, search “What I’ve Learned: Willie Nelson”. – Michael Abedin

ill Phillips is a legend. He’s written three bestselling books, created the famous Bodyfor-Life fitness contest, contributed millions of dollars to the Make-A-Wish foundation, and continues to support people in achieving health and fitness goals. We became great friends after he transformed my life more than a decade ago when I entered his contest five times in a row, losing almost a hundred pounds in one year. Now I’m transforming my body yet again with his help. We were having lunch one day, and Bill said something startling. “I always knew I’d win a Super Bowl ring,” he said. “I didn’t know how it would be possible since I didn’t actually play football in the famous games. I was a coach and trainer to many of the athletes. I just knew it would happen, even without any evidence that it was possible.” Yet, sure enough, on July 15, 1998 during the awards ceremony, Bill was called forward and presented with a Super Bowl ring for his support of the winning team.
His dream came true.

But it didn’t end there – a year later he received a second one. “That,” he said, “made me feel like life is just a wish box.” I found that fascinating. I had to explore it. “Did you intend to win it, or did you have a premonition you would win it?” I asked. A deep thinker and practicing meditator, Bill knows there’s more to life than what meets the eye. He looked at me, smiling, processing the question. I went on to explain. “Oprah said she knew she’d be famous even when she was a kid. Ayn Rand had most of her philosophy of life articulated in mind when she was six years old. And I always knew I’d be an author.” I continued, “I once asked Rhonda Byrne, the creator of the hit movie The Secret, the same question – did she intend the movie or did she receive inspiration to make it – but she couldn’t say with any clarity. She told me she ‘called it forth.’ But where did the idea for it come from? Do you think we intended those dreams – or did we tune in to our destinies?” “That’s a great question,” Bill said. “Maybe we need to spend less time intending and more time receiving,” I suggested.
He loved the idea.
As I continue to practice Ho’oponopono and get clear, it becomes more apparent that there’s some sort of underlying current to life, as though Divinity has a plan for each of us and we can tune into it. We need to get quiet to hear its whispers and feel its nudges. I saw Dr. Hew Len standing in a field once, arms folded, staring at some weeds. When I asked him what he was doing, he said, “Listening.” This wasn’t uncommon. He often walked through gardens to listen to plants. It’s an ancient tradition of Hawaiians to not only respect all forms of life, but to actually listen to what they may be trying to say, to the clues they’re giving us.
And it’s as simple as listening.
Instead of a wish box, I’d say life is more of a gift box. Rather than putting your intentions in the box, it may be wiser to look in the box and see what gifts await. Would you rather tell the Divine what to do, or accept the gifts the Divine has in store for you? After all, like Dr. Hew Len says, “Divinity is not a concierge.” Bill didn’t know how he would win a Super Bowl ring. But he did. Twice. I didn’t know how I would ever become an author. But I did. Yes, you can pray for your wishes and demands, and pretend that the conscious self knows what’s best. But why would you, when Divinity is the source of magic and miracles? Keep cleaning, and accept the wonders you’re offered. Your life is a miracle. Accept the gift. Wild Horses J
anuary has a double dip of New Year celebrations this year – 2014 kicks off on January 1, and the Year of the Horse leaves the gate January 31, a little earlier than usual. The Chinese start partying based on the new moon, which can occur anytime from late January to early February. (If you’re born in one of those months, btw, don’t rely on the placemat at the Chinese restaurant to figure out your astrological persuasion – or that of your dinner date and candidate for significant other-hood. You might think they’re a noble Horse, when they’re really a slippery Snake.) Horses have a deep, mystical bond with humankind. The dog came in to the circle of the firelight to be companion and fellow hunter, but the horse gave humans four legs instead of two, adding height, speed, and mobility to their endeavors. That’s an equation that adds up to power. In Spain, the horseman, the caballero, was a gentleman, a man of authority, a knight, noble but dangerous – think of the chess piece, the only one that can turn corners. Escaped Spanish horses gave Native Americans new power, turning the Comanche, in particular, into the biker gang of the Plains tribes. Thing about horses is, all that power has to be controlled. If you’ve ever spent much time riding one that wasn’t going around in circles on a brass pole, you know that the first order of business is to let a horse know it can trust you – and that you’re in charge. For all their size and strength, horses are prey animals, and if their big ol’ eyes turn a breeze and a black trash bag into a panther ready to pounce, your ride can explode into a panic-stricken dash for safety, one that starts with getting whatever’s on their back (as in, you) off, before it eats them. Dependable one minute, stubborn, willful, downright wild the next. You’ve got to pay attention around horses – and during the Year of the Horse.

Lead ‘em to water...
The Chinese aren’t particularly fond of Horse years. They find them unpredictable, a little chaotic at times, stomping around in the yard eating the flowers and then prancing on their merry way, as one author puts it. 2014 is a Wood Horse year, and the Wood element makes the Horse opinionated and judgmental – even less likely to drink, once you lead them to water. You know what the proverbial virtue will be in the next year, right? Yep, sorry – patience, along with a healthy dose of self-discipine. Cracking the whip won’t do much good, though. Might even get you throwed and stomped on, or dragged through the brush. Good riders will tell you to sit a horse for a minute, let them feel your energy, let them know you’re on their side – and then keep just enough gentle pressure on the reins every now and then to keep their head down. Keep your eyes up, on the trail ahead. Probably a good way to take care of biz in 2014, unless you’ve always wanted to be in the rodeo, in which case – let ‘er buck.
We’ll ride them some day.
Oh, that whole wild horses thing, running free? Cool, but a little bit of a myth. Wild stallions spend a great deal of their time gathering, defending, and keeping tabs on a harem of mares, who are great big flirts and prone to wander off with the next guy who shows some good moves. If a young, unattached stud strays too close to another male’s filly – fight’s on. (New affairs of the heart that commence in a Horse year are said to have the potential to be a wild ride.) Like any good myth, though, there’s truth in the image of the wild horse – running, drinking the wind, hooves connected to the Earth, then flying above it. It’s a thing of beauty, and like all myths, all truth, all beauty, the Earth would be a poorer place without it.

2014 FOUR WAYS TO KNOW YOURSELF MORE DEEPLY by Vanessa Nova The ancient mystics’ decree “Know Thyself” is an important key to fulfillment in our modern lives, for the more we know ourselves at our deepest level, the more we can live a conscious, joyful life. Though the journey of self-discovery is a life-long process, there are four simple steps that you can take right now that can shine light on your most authentic self. • Take inventory. Journaling is one of the most powerful ways to tap into your inner wisdom and find ways to love and accept yourself. When you empty your mind onto the page, you also become more aware of your limiting beliefs, fears, and stories. Some topics to explore in your journal: Who am I? What makes me happy? Things I love about myself. What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail? • Discover Your Purpose. What you discover in your journaling can give you important clues about your purpose. Every human being is here to fulfill a specific mission – in this life. When you find yourself on a path towards fulfilling this life mission, you gain a deeper understanding of who you are, what gifts you bring, and what brings you joy. • Clear your Energy. When you are carrying around old hurts, attachments to past relationships, and general negativity, it’s difficult to see who you truly are. Once you take action to clear your energy, you gain more clarity about who you are and where you want to go. There are many ways to go about this, from doing a juice cleanse, cleaning out your closet, deleting draining contacts from social media, and receiving emotional and spiritual cleansing from a professional. • Learn to meditate. A simple goal of meditation is to give your mind rest from all the busy-ness and allow the light of your consciousness to come through. There are many ways to meditate, from a formal meditation practice, to spending quiet time in nature, to practicing yoga or creating art. Explore different types of meditation to find what works for you, and you’ll start to notice the benefits quite quickly. Vanessa Nova is co-founder of Activate Austin and a certified Life Activation Practitioner, healer, and teacher in the mystery school tradition. 2014
AUSPICIOUSNESS ABOUNDS (And Feng Shui helps) by Stacy Davenport 2014 is the Year of the Horse, and basic Feng Shui can help you harvest a great life in the coming year. Feng Shui principles can help create a nurturing, supportive, loving, safe home by addressing and balancing the parts of it that embrace the nine aspects of life: • Career and Life Path • Skills and Knowledge • Family • Prosperity • Fame and Reputation • Relationships and Love • Creativity and Children • Helpful People and Travel • Health and Well Being
What’s in your way?
The universe you occupy is intentional. Since you’re given the ability to intend, you’re a co-creator of the universe you experience – and you can apply the rules of Feng Shui to your individual universe, to shift its energy. You can move energy around in your home and better your life by using Feng Shui cures to shift imbalances, extending your own energy into a specific area and anchoring and enhancing it with specific colors, mirrors, lamps, fountains, and crystals. Here’s an exercise to help you assess your life and guide you to where you might focus your Feng Shui energy in 2014. (Get out a notebook and write your answers.) Are you satisfied with your career? Content with your level of education? Enjoying a good relationship with your family? Living paycheck to paycheck? Letting fear stop you from fulfilling dreams and being happy? Content and fulfilled with romantic relationships? Burned out or bored in work, or life? Having trouble finding others to help you? Having challenges with health and well-being? Look at your answers – find any you’re not satisfied with? For those areas of your life and home, create new intentions to co-create exactly what you desire in 2014. Get busy clearing away at least twenty-seven things that no longer work, you no longer need, or don’t bring you joy. Purge, baby, purge – drawers, closets, linens, pantry, garage, office, toys, cars – and do it now! Stacy Davenport, CPCC, is a Certified Feng Shui expert and founder of The Energy Factor, offering home or office recalibrations, in-person or Skype. TRAINING FOR STRENGTH
Without getting bent out of shape by Matt Fuhrmann (Functional Movement, Part 3) Ask anyone their training goals, and you’ll get a lot of the same answer. This is a society obsessed with cardio, losing fat, and quick results. Strength takes time, though, because skill takes time – and strength is a skill. Want results? Gain strength – you’ll begin to lose fat, replacing it with muscle. Breathe properly and fully with your training – you’ll work your cardio, without hours on a treadmill. Five to ten minutes with a kettlebell, correctly done, can outweigh an hour walk or half-hour run, easily.
If you’re not strong, what are you actually conditioning?
Step into most gyms or cross-training facilities, and you’ll find people doing things like box jumps, kip-ups, swinging kettlebells, doing crunches they’d like to believe are sit-ups. Exercise has been proven time and time again to be good for you – so why do so many of these people end up hurting? Lack of preparation? Lack of form? Both? • Box jumps without preparing the tendon from the ankle to the knee, without establishing some strength and endurance, is like driving a race car without checking the alignment first. • Kipping pull-ups are simply a cheat move, for when you haven’t put in the time to get strong at pull-ups. • Crunches actually teach the trunk to fire the front and not the back, disconnecting the core connection that everyone should have. (It’s literally like taking away half of the trunk from a tree, and expecting it not to fall over). • Kettlebells are great with proper form and technique, but many cross-training facilities monitor technique poorly and skip the strength training portion altogether, in an attempt to give quicker results – and feel the burn.
Felling burned?
In reality, what you should be feeling is better – better than when you walked in the door. You should be leaving feeling energized, not zapped. The point is, put in your time. Establish proper mobility and stability, gain strength, learn proper techniques, and then condition. Make yourself truly fit, capable of handling what lies ahead – because the next thing to train, after you’re conditioned, is a specific skill practice. Matt Fuhrmann, founder of Tao Health and Fitness, offers Functional Movement, Primal Move, progressive calisthenics, Indian clubs, kettlebells, martial arts, yoga, qigong, Reiki, and old-time strongman training. Free introductory class – call or text (512) 653-1495.

10 WAYS TO SINK YOUR TEETH INTO 2014
And not sink your teeth and gums by Michael Abedin Every good January magazine needs a retrospective list or two, so here’s a compilation of tips from 2013 that can become 2014 resolutions for the care and feeding of one of your most important pieces of equipment – your pie hole. 1 Brush. No-brainer, huh? A quickie in the morning is good – then brush your teeth. (Rim shot!) A quick wakeup brush gets rid of bacteria and gunk that accumulate in the night, before they get cozy with your breakfast. When you can’t brush (in a restaurant, maybe), swish some water around. 2 Floss. Gently! Sawing into the gum can get some pink in the sink and can separate gum tissue from the tooth, opening up a superhighway for critters. (Same for overzealous brushing.) 3 Regular exams. If you let it go until there’s a coral reef ecosystem under your gums, that may mean frequent visits. Ask what “deep cleaning” means if it comes up. Overly invasive cleaning techniques can get gunk into your bloodstream. 4 Your heart is in your mouth – and vice versa. Plaque and bacteria from oral infections are now being directly implicated in coronary disease and other maladies. 5 Maintain your overall health. Duh. 6 Watch your diet. Tricky. You could be eating a vegan, grain-based, or raw diet heavy on nuts and seeds, and be blocking the absorption of minerals into your tooth enamel (and everywhere else). May not want to hear it, but fat from healthy animal products, including dairy, can keep your choppers chopping. Correct diet can actually help you re-grow enamel, even reverse decay. 7 Avoid cut and scrape gum procedures. As Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health points out, you can identify pathogens causing gum problems and use natural therapies to regrow and re-attach gum tissue – without chemicals and surgery. 8 Get the mercury out. Also tricky, and possibly risky – not all mercury amalgam removal systems are created equal. Carpenter recommends biocompatibility testing for replacement materials, which can vary widely. 9 Coordinate with a good, professional holistic health practitioner. Transcend Dental Health works with an on-staff, on-site Naturopathic Doctor. 0 Never eat anything larger (or harder) than your head. Good advice in general. by Jan Frazier It can be maddening to try to understand how the ego works – yet it continues to drive your every move. That’s because there are things you haven’t looked at from the clear point of view outside the limited self. • Find out why you hold on to the egoic identity. If you think of yourself as a victim, as someone who’s chronically ill, a survivor, a renunciant, then something deep in you can suppose that if this identification ended, it would rob you of a sense of self. • You hold beliefs of all kinds. If someone asks what you think about thus-and-so, you’ll almost always have a ready viewpoint, perhaps one you came to long ago. Your ideas about what’s true (which is what a belief is) constitute a significant part of who you are. • Ask yourself who you’d be without any beliefs at all. When you wake up, these cherished ideas will cease to feel important, since their primary function is to give you a you.
No sacred cows.
The egoic self does not readily turn away from things it believes to be true. Yet any belief system – even a spiritual one that seems to be helping you – is limiting. Beliefs talk to mind, not to presence. They intervene between awareness and reality. They attempt to interpret reality, putting you at a distance from it. You don’t need to examine every single thing about your ego, since when some parts self-destruct, others will fall with them, no longer able to sustain themselves. But you must be willing to look at anything. There can be no sacred cows.
Where’s the limit to what you’re willing to face?

Is the thinker just another thought?
In the usual way of looking at the mind, you see a self, producing thoughts. That’s clear. What’s not so obvious is that the thinker (the appearance of a you) is really just another one of your thoughts. An elaborate thought, to be sure, but invented, just as surely as your thoughts are invented. You think yourself up, over and over again, and then the self you thought up thinks thoughts. That’s what becomes very clear when you’ve awakened – that your mind has been inventing a self your entire life. So you want to change the world?
It’s a crazy time to be on the planet right now! The problems are so big most of us feel helpless. What do we do about the economy, Fukushima, climate changes – where do we even start? As strange as it may seem, deepening your spiritual path may be the answer. Because we’re all connected, the more each of us takes responsibility for raising our personal vibration, the more we help shift the vibration of the entire planet. Our personal vibration raises and lowers with the way we think or visualize, how conscious we are, and how we walk our talk. Becoming more aware of the ego, and the shadows it casts, is the first step to becoming conscious. When we’re aware of what we’re creating, we can then start taking responsibility for our actions and create consciously. This raises our vibration. For many, the Shamanic path is an excellent way to refine this journey of soul awareness. Based on thousands of years of wisdom, it steps you out of victim consciousness and into the responsibility of being a co-creator.
The shaman’s path.
The path of the shaman is an extraordinary experiential journey, one you can’t master by studying a few books and taking an exam. You have to get down on your hands and knees and live it! It’s a path of empowerment, wisdom, and connection with the Divine, a true journey of awakening and remembering how to listen, both to your intuition and the voices of Nature. While once open to just a few, the path of the shaman Initiate, or Mesa Carrier, is now available to anyone brave enough to reclaim their own personal power from the dysfunctional patterns of their past. All types of people are choosing to look deeper now and commit themselves to change – doctors, coffee baristas, homemakers, therapists, nurses, lawyers, and mechanics, just to name just a few. Because it restores you to the intuitive sensitivity you were born with and shines light into how your shadows can derail you, it’s also an excellent way of strengthening all kinds of healing practices. In short, it’s a path for anyone interested in selftransformation.

Building your Mesa.
So how is this done? A true shaman, like a Taoist Master, co-creates with Spirit from a place beyond ego. The first step then, is to go inside. As a shaman initiate, you learn how to release the fear-based stories that keep you spinning in eddies instead of flowing with Creation. The traditional South American Andean traditions begin with building a Mesa, a bundle of medicine stones that restore balance, or ayni, to their environment. • You build your Mesa by transmuting the stories that keep you off balance into your strengths, your medicine. • You then practice trusting in your intuition again, bringing synchronicity back into the way you experience the world. • Through a series of nine rites and initiations (also known as the Munay Ki) you receive protections and divine guidance from ancient Earth and Wisdom Keeper lineages. Because the Peruvian shamans came down off the mountains and are sharing their wisdom with us, people all over the globe now carry this medicine of balance. All manifestation starts with the energetic, and like a tuning fork the Mesa Carrier holds a vibration that others naturally align with. While most Mesa Carriers may not be practicing healers in the traditional sense, they do change their worlds just by raising their own vibrations and walking their talk. As they shift, the world around them shifts. Want to change the world? Join us. Happy
New Year
And Happy New Sensitivity Awareness!
by Nerissa Oden
Which aspect of your health will you tackle this year? More exercise? More dieting? Will you use your new mental health coverage? Should you try meditating, again? Or should you connect with your health in a deeper, more unusual way, by identifying your environmental sensitivities?
Why you should strengthen your sensitivity awareness.
Most people have one or more environmental sensitivities – smaller, non-severe allergies that can interfere with your quality of life and leave you feeling disempowered, or even victimized by your health. When you remove the cause of an ailment, you’ll feel better, more in control of your life. You can develop a sensitivity due to numerous factors – genetics, nutritional deficiency, chronic overexposure, heavy toxicity, gut imbalance, impaired immune system, stress, or some combination of these. Sensitivities to food (including food chemicals and colors) can be controlled and reduced by simple avoidance. A sensitivity is also called a Type-2 Allergy, a Delayed (or Hidden) Allergy, and includes Intolerance as well. Sensitivities activate your immune system and can cause
a huge variety of symptoms – chronic fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, general pains, nausea, heartburn, gastritis, bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel byndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, itching, eczema, adult acne, hives, migraine and other headaches, asthma, chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, hay fever, heart palpitations, skipped heartbeats, bedwetting, frequent urination, anxiety, depression, behavioral disturbances, hyperactivity, ADHD, nervousness, sleeplessness, dizziness, Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy, Ménière’s disease, tinnitus, hypoglycemia, premenstrual syndrome, candida, and others. Food sensitivities can also can also cause sinusitis and hay fever symptoms, a good thing to know with cedar season coming on. (Sensitivities to pollen are usually eliminated or reduced when food sensitivities are avoided.)
What steps should you take to increase sensitivity awareness?
• Be aware. Maybe you know a person who can’t drink coffee because it makes them lethargic, or triggers cystic acne. Do you know many parents who don’t allow their children to eat food dye, wheat, or milk because they notice unwanted behavioral changes? Do you have an old aunt who won’t take red colored medicines because it will keep her awake? Anyone you know get headaches after taking ibuprofen for pain? How many friend’s dogs grew their fur back after gluten, corn, fish (or some other ingredient) was removed from their diet? Do scented products make you sneeze? • Maintain a food diary, or logbook. Note all meals and drinks, including supplements and medicines. Also note all ailments and physical issues. Identifying your sensitivities without getting tested takes time. Keeping daily notes will help you, and it signals to doctors that you’re serious about feeling better. • When you feel bad, ask yourself, “What have I eaten recently?” Be sure to think back as far as three days. Your diary will come in handy at these times. Over time, you’ll notice patterns. You’ll simplify and vary your food intake, looking for a change in ailment patterns. Those who take on the challenge of strengthening sensitivity awareness will begin to ask this question as soon as they feel bad. Sensitivity awareness can empower your health throughout your life – a worthy new year’s goal, indeed. Nerissa Oden is a citizen advocate for knowing your unique individual food sensitivities via laboratory testing. Annual testing from one of a variety of sources can be an important aspect of individual wellness. Testing options, testimonials, and FAQS are available on her website, www.FoodPowers.com

LIVING WITH
ADDICTIONS
ADDICTION by Eric Denner, MFT (Part 1) It can be very difficult to tell if someone has a problem with drugs or alcohol. In the past, addiction was defined primarily by physiological measures – tolerance and withdrawal. In the past few decades, the definition has expanded to include: • Taking the substance in larger amounts, or over a longer period than intended. • Desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control use. • A great deal of time spent in activities necessary to obtain, use, or recover from the effects of a substance. • Failure to meet important social, family, or occupational obligations, giving up or reducing recreational activities. • Continued use despite adverse consequences (loss of job, relationships, money). • Tolerance, withdrawal. A shorthand way to identify a substance use problem is known as the 3 C’s: Compulsion (or craving). Loss of control. Continued use.
MBA

The D-word.
One of the hallmarks of addiction is denial, a defense mechanism that prevents seeing or acknowledging the negative effect substance use has on your life. Part of the reason for denial is the shame you feel when you lose control. Legal and illegal substance use is actively and aggressively promoted in our culture, however, through advertising, promotion, and informal (often subconscious) messages. Strength and independence are important cultural values. Acknowledging a substance problem to yourself or others can make you feel like you’re weak, and can’t withstand the pressures of living – yet the nature of alcohol and illicit drugs is to foster dependence. No matter how strong or independent you are, if you use enough (or long enough), physiological, psychological, or emotional dependence can develop. Addiction is rampant in our culture, and isn’t limited to drugs and alcohol. In addition to substances, you can be addicted to behaviors – eating, gambling, relationships, sex, shopping, working. The reason people turn to any compulsive behavior is the same – to escape or distract from pain. No one likes to hurt or suffer. Yet pain is part of life, just like happiness, sadness, and fear. Escaping it may work temporarily, but it prevents growing, learning, and developing in the long run, and doesn’t solve the problems causing the pain. Usually, it makes problems worse – and creates new ones. Change is possible, though. Help is available. You
Little colored lights twinkle. Decorations and festive music abound. You gather with friends and loved ones for fellowship and feasts. All these mark major holidays, or holy days, and they proliferate near the end of the modern calendar year. From Halloween through New Year’s seems almost like a constant celebration, and a week or so later, socalled “regular time” resumes. In truth, of course, attitudes toward the holiday season range from ecstatic bliss to cynical depression. Come early January, the major period of festivity grinds to a halt, and the holidays become scattered, fewer and farther between. Not so, of course, in older traditions, many of them now called pagan or tribal. The older view is based on the year understood as a cycle, with regular and balanced markers of what happens in the natural world around us, and in the sky above. Seasons, the daily cycle of the Sun, and the monthly cycle of the Moon, though this last occurs thirteen times a year, rather than twelve, as in the modern calendar. Similarly, sacred places such as Glastonbury and the Great Pyramid are often revered as having special significance. Such places do indeed host special vibes that visitors can feel and experience. Yet in the sense of stardust realities, coming from the connection we share with All Things, every place is equally sacred.

The Egyptian deity Khepri, or the Lord of Cycles, is a creator depicted as a scarab beetle that rolls his ball of dung (the Sun) across the heavens daily, in order to enact the sacred and necessary turning of day from morning to noon, to evening, night, and daytime again – and every day becomes a Holy Day. The image of something as humble as this little insect (known in Texas as a dung roller) to represent something so profound as daily rebirth, re-creation, and regeneration, is typical of the Egyptians. They had that stardust attitude that sees the presence of the Divine in everything. Stardust is the creative source, the common origin of All Things, within you as much as it is everywhere. Bruce P. Grether is a many times published novelist, Wizard, and a regular Austin All Natural contributor, and he provides readings and consultations online via the Stardust Tarot, which he created. UNCONDITIONAL HAPPINESS The Healing Science by James Keeley When you think of happiness, you usually envision a life where things are going your way, you have everything you could want, and have no problems. Is that happiness? In fact, what is happiness?
The real problem.
The ancient Greeks defined happiness as “the full use of our powers along lines of excellence” – more like an action than a set of circumstances. Spiritual teachings tell us happiness is the feeling that results from experiencing yourself as someone who has everything needed to take an action that contributes to a life you love living, regardless of the circumstances. This speaks to one of the core tenants of all wisdom traditions – you are never given more than you can handle. This teaching forms the foundation upon which all hope and optimism is based, because it tells you no matter what happens, you will always have the resources and capacity to respond in a way that contributes to a fulfilling life.
If you accept this idea to be true, the real problem can never be with circumstances. The real problem is that you’re defining and understanding yourself – and your capabilities and resources – in a limited way. Easy to say, until something so painful happens that positive resolution and fulfillment feel impossible. In these moments, you lose heart. Your intentions, efforts, and energies switch from the life you want to one where you’re simply trying to get by with less. In healing, it’s not enough to know that you’re never given more than you can handle. Rather, you must experience – with body, heart, and mind – how that’s so in a given situation. Only then will this principle translate to an inspired response. • Depression, the opposite of happiness, is characterized by the inability to envision a positive outcome to current life circumstances. • Stress is the result of longing to live one life, but feeling forced to live another because of circumstances you feel unable to resolve. Stress becomes anxiety, bitterness, depression, and frustration, straining your body, relationships, and work. • Over time, stress leads to breakdown.
Necessary signals.
Most of the time, people misunderstand unconditional happiness as learning to accept or be at peace with whatever’s happening in their lives. They view the upsetting emotions and reactions they feel in painful circumstances as character flaws or defects that they wouldn’t be having if they were more accepting or trusting. In order to be truly present with life however, you must accept both what’s happening and how you feel about it. Emotional reactions are necessary signals that tell you one very important thing – namely, you’re in a situation in which you’re experiencing yourself as someone who doesn’t have the resources or capacity to respond in a way that contributes to a life you love living. Until you resolve this limited experience of yourself, happiness, healing and fulfillment will remain elusive. By learning your true capabilities and resources, you’re able to respond, consistently and excellently, in all aspects of your life – regardless of circumstances. James Keeley is the founder of the RUH Healing Process, combining spiritual wisdom with practical counseling applications. Beyond
Perfectionism
by HeatherAsh Amara
Do you habitually live at 120 percent, or at 60 percent? Doing your best means living in the present moment, taking into account your current emotional, energetic, and physical state. It doesn’t mean being perfect all the time. The final agreement from don Miguel Ruiz’s book The Four Agreements encourages being flexible and honest about doing your best, using the resources available. Imagine someone who always does more than their best, living life at more than 100 percent. They often feel frazzled, exhausted, don’t take care of their body, and frequently get sick.
A recovering “doing-more” addict.
I constantly monitor myself to stick to my best, and not try more. I used to overbook, rush, squeeze in extra things, stay up late at night to finish projects, skip meals. I felt stressed and overwhelmed. I still have the tendency to do more than my best, but pay more attention to my mental, emotional, and physical state when making decisions, asking, “Is this more than my best? What would my best look like, in this moment?” I’ve found when I do 100 percent, rather than striving to be superwoman, I get more done – and am happier. • When learning to do your best, release your ideal in favor of the reality of what your best is. • If you feel overwhelmed or burned out, stop and ask, “Am I trying to doing more than my best?” Check in with your physical, emotional, and mental state. • If you’re doing more than your best, take time out and say (out loud!) the opposite of the belief driving your behavior. You might say, “I don’t have to be perfect. I can do my best” or “I’m safe, even if I don’t get this project done right now. I’m doing my best.” You’ll probably have to repeat that statement a million or so times. Keep moving your attention away from the fear driving your current (re)action, to being present with how you want to be and act. Then repeat, again and again, until the new agreement takes hold. Dear Ashtara:
Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, I am aware of or feeling several opportunities to move, like to Houston or to Europe. Is my best opportunity to stay here in Austin or to move to one of those locations – and if so, what opportunities might there be in either place? Dragonangel, 38, Austin, TX Dear Dragonangel, It seems that there are worldwide opportunities for your talent, which is dealing with the public at large. Houston is filled with refineries and pollution. Do you think you want to be around that energy? You are a healer and healers need rivers, lakes, and oceans, to eradicate negative energy. Your best bet is to stay put or move to a location that is serene. Your highest teacher is Sandalfon.
Dear Ashtara, I’d like to know a general “forecast” for my life in 2014, whatever the Angels want to tell me, please. June, 52, San Antonio, TX Dear June, There will be many pleasurable moments with a person that you do not know. You will also be able to create with the light around you. When you complete the first four months, you will also be able to pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Many people think highly of you. Therefore, they will melt with your business savvy. Purposeful projects are spawned. Your ship may come in. Most of your journey will be within a frame of fun-filled and loving people. Ashtar and His Command are your guides.
Dear Ashtara, I’m about to publish my book and I’m considering going back to my maiden name and updating all of my details to
26
my maiden name as well. I’m thinking this is a good idea. What do you think? Calisto, 47, Austin, TX Dear Calisto, Congratulations on beginning to publish. You are meant to have many books. Please do not think this is the last one. Your maiden name is pure. It’s also the force field around you now. So, it will be a good change. The spiritual hierarchy is around you for speaking and teaching, especially Sandalfon, Ashtar, and Maitreya. Your guardian is God.
Dear Ashtara, What do I need to do to get my lover closer and more romantic? Victoria, 36, California Dear Victoria, What you need to do is act mature instead of “girlish”. Chestnut Bud
Bach Chronicles, Part Twenty-three
In the 1930’s, English physician Edward Bach created a series of thirty-six flower remedies, prepared from plants found in his native England, to address underlying mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of physical disease. by Michael Abedin Hardly anyone’s as much fun to quote as songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard, the consummate storyteller who’s given us the heartwarming ballads Snake Farm, Screw You (We’re from Texas), and, of course, the touching Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother. Ray’s been known to say he only knows one prayer, “Lord, just get me out of this, and I promise I’ll never do it again.” It must be a good one, he figures, because it’s worked four times. Make the same mistakes over and over and you’ll wind up like a bud that never opens, not to be confused with a Bud that never opens. (Bad pop top?) A bud that never produces a flower or fruit just sits there, full of potential, and never grows. Chestnut Bud is Edward Bach’s remedy for repeating your mistakes, failing to learn life’s little lessons – never growing into your full potential.

Get hooked up with the same insignificant other again, just like the last four or five? Keep getting sick (or never get well), so you get to try another modality, supplement or medic-tation? Feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, or like you’re paying off some karmic lesson – and you don’t even know what it is? (The director of Groundhog Day, btw, said that Murray spent forty years living the same day over and over until he got it right – probably not a good role model, unless you really like Sonny and Cher.) Make the same resolutions this year that you made last year? If you subscribe to the somewhat grim notion that you’re only on this planet to be in cosmic school of some sort (no recess) and feel like you keep getting held back in the first grade, sneak a little shot of Chestnut Bud between classes. Michael Abedin offers instruction on flower remedy combinations. (512) 879-7299.
