ATTORNEY GENERAL gR LEADER DEFENDER OF OIL AND GAS
REG ABBOTT: IN TEXAS
BY: jENNIFER lARIVEY
Texas State Attorney General Greg Abbott has made an impact as our 50th Attorney General. Secretary Evans describes Texas State Attorney General and states at the Permian Basin Petroleum Association in Sept 2013, “Greg Abbott, more than anybody I know, with character, with integrity, with honor, with duty, with commitment to public service, has been a tireless defender of the free enterprise system.” When speaking to General Abbott we see a tireless leader and defender and an advocate for Oil & Gas. He has told TOGPN Founder, Jennifer Larivey, when speaking about the forces who have brought the Endangered Species allegations, Abbott said he will oppose them if he wins the governorship. “If they come to Texas and starting expanding the species they claim are endangered, whether it be the Sagebrush Lizard or Prairie Chicken, or whatever they come up with next, we will be prepared to file legal challenges to protect your ability produce energy,” Abbott said.

The BattleField I was always a big fan of Wonder Woman! Growing up, I would not miss a single episode! I truly believed I had Wonder Woman’s powers. Nothing was impossible for me. Heck, I was 5 years old...but what happens to us as adults? We begin to doubt and lose our confidence in ourselves. Fear sets in...fear of rejection, fear of success, fear of failure, etc...But we have to remember that these are simply false beliefs! We must remember the battlefield is actually in your mind...it is not with those of this world...it begins in your Mindset. So then you have to change your mindset. Remove the Poison Ivy from your life...what does that poison look like? It can be simply described as anything that manifests itself into Fear! Remove yourself from all Negativity: relationships, work, past experiences, etc. How do we begin this process? The ABC’s of Entering the Battlefield: The First step is ADMISSION: Admitting that your life has some negativity, whether it be a poor relationship or past experience that you have allowed to manifest into a Fear. Admitting to yourself that you were created for more and too many times we become comfortable in just existing instead of living. The Second Step is BELIEVING: Believing in Yourself and Believing that you are in charge of your life. I know what you are thinking, “I have heard this so many times, Jennifer.” But remember that 5 year old little girl who knew she had the same Powers as Wonder Woman! Believe and Become her again! The Third Step is Challenge: Challenge yourself daily to remove the false beliefs and fears in your life. The reason we use “Challenge” is because this is the most Active and longest part of the Process! It is a daily renewing of your mind which is a challenge. It is a Challenge because it isn’t Easy...If it were easy wouldn’t everyone be happy with their life and it would be easy making their dreams come true...life would be simple. But it’s not! It’s Not Easy, It’s a Challenge! But remember you can Win these Challenges!! It is up to you!! So Take the reigns in your mind and daily make each of these steps a part of your life...Change the Battlefield into your Victory Dance! Raise your Flag and Good Luck!! --J.Larivey 32

We’ll Need to Coax It a Little – By Bruce A. Stanfill, Aquila Analytics, LLC.
Brute force. We’ve all used it. Nothing like a bit
of ‘mechanical agitation’ to get things moving again - except when it doesn’t. I have yet to see a frozen computer screen get un-stuck by smacking the monitor. But perhaps someday it will work, so we do it anyway. If nothing else, it makes us feel better when we don’t know what else to do. However, there’s always that guy who gets things going with just the right amount of finesse – and we hate him for it. So rather than asking for him to show us how to do it, we go on picking up the sledgehammer or smacking the monitor. When starting up a business, the brute force method works well: 20 hour days schmoozing potential customers, planning the job, fixing the problems, and delivering on the commitments no matter what. That is known as Dedication and Determination. When things get really busy, it’s also known as Desperation! It happens all the time – as human beings, we are comfortable doing things the same way every time until something forces us to change. But the successful leader anticipates the need to change. Is it time for you to change the tools you use to manage and lead your business? Same Old Management B.S. Most small and mid-sized businesses who have taken the step to implement a business management system, and even some large companies, suffer from the same old Management B.S.: Management By Spreadsheet. It used to be that business owners did all the number crunching in their head or on a scratchpad. But since the 1990s, it has been a MUST to use a computer with spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel. The problem is that a lot of managers who learned the trade many years ago use spreadsheets like they would a piece of paper: they enter numbers in cells, and have the spreadsheet multiply quantity times unit price, total up the columns, add in sales tax, and display a total. Eventually, they hire someone to enter the numbers for them, pretty-up the printout, and “Oh by the way, copy the information from each job into a spreadsheet so I can see how much we did last month to plan for next month.” Most businesses pay people 34
to copy and paste numbers from workbook to workbook because they don’t know how to do it otherwise. That’s the start of Management BS. “Every business I have been in communicates by spreadsheets,” says Dan Harrier, a consultant with Aquila Analytics. “Yet few people are proficient in fully utilizing spreadsheets. Employees can spend their entire day refreshing the data, processing it, and formatting it. Forget analysis, there is no time left for that. However, I am able to code many repetitive Excel importing and processing steps into macros, and reduce that daily ordeal to about 1-5 minutes. The benefit is a reproducible, error-free report, done quickly so that there is time to focus on the meaning of the information. Recently, I was able to save a company 400 hours a year doing just that.” Why wouldn’t every business want to do this? Most companies can’t justify hiring a full time employee to automate their processes, and those that can have difficulty in finding the right people. Look for talent on a temporary basis, as needed. Assuming you have the time, how do you get meaning out of spreadsheet reports? Looking over tables of numbers is a waste of time because people aren’t wired to easily compare lists of numbers to each other, and especially not to the numbers they saw yesterday. Instead, I use charts. I’ve always said: “A picture is worth a thousand words, and a chart is worth a thousand numbers.” So putting the business results into charts is a step in the right direction. The real value in using a spreadsheet is to produce single page Dashboard Reports to identify trends and outliers, drill down to causes by interconnecting data from different sources, and to perform other analysis of the information to learn something new about the business. Steve Schmidt, one of the driving forces for Six Sigma implementation in Motorola and GE, and a resident of the San Antonio area, in his book Knowledge Based Management, asks the question: “One year from now what evidence will you have to show that you made a difference? If we don’t have a plan to measure our impact on the company’s bottom line, our apathy projects a ‘will to lose’ which will be
Give Me That Sledgehammer! a self-fulfilling prophecy. …our job security is in our own hands.” Leadership EXCEL-ence Being a leader in your company implies that you are out in front of your business. The brute force method is to go with your experience or gut, and then bust your assets to make it happen: “This type of job usually takes 2-4 days, so I’ll bid it at 3 and tell the supervisor to make it happen.” But with the power of Excel, you can know exactly how much time, materials, and effort the job should take based on many different factors. Excel can do a lot more than the average person or even the average company knows how to use. I’m not an IT guy; I’m just a practical get-it-done guy who tries to use the tools at hand with a little finesse. Consider this possible approach:
The KEY to Leadership EXCEL-ence is automatically storing the key details of each job to the Job History Workbook. This gives you the power to analyze the past for money saving opportunities and to more accurately predict the future when estimating jobs. And if you have multiple sites, this is how you get immediate visibility to how the whole business is doing with automated customized dashboards. You let the reports identify the differences so your teams push each other rather than you pushing them.
But Shouldn’t I Invest in a ‘Cloud’ System? Business growth is a progression: there is no One-SizeFits-All business solution for the entire spectrum. For the start-up, the pen and paper and brute force method can work. For a giant, a customized cloud-based system is probably not only a good idea, but essential. But in-between, Excel can give the best bang for the buck for two reasons: 1) Excel allows you to be flexible while you grow. Simple spreadsheets can be easily modified by properly trained users, or locked-down with passwords and macros to provide consistency and reliability once you are comfortable with your level of information. 2) Cloud solutions usually involve a tedious and expensive initial setup if you want any customization at all, and the learning curve can be steep if you buy a standard package and have to do it their way. And one more: 3) Export to Excel. When you want to look at all your Cloud data in a new way, dumping the data to Excel is the typical solution the Cloud guys will offer. Either that, or you pay them the big bucks to crunch the data for you, or better yet, subscribe to the Premium package and be inundated with reports that you don’t need to get the ones you do. For most of us, if we ask one of the gurus to bring the Cloud down to our level, we just end up lost in the Fog. Here is how I see the value attainable by the three levels of sophistication discussed so far:
Where to start? First, consider how much time your people spend pushing paper and copying numbers between spreadsheets. How often do they make annoying little mistakes? What would you do now if you had that information which will take all day for someone to work up for you? 35
