You can’t pack everything you need to know about visiting or living in Seguin into 46 pages. There’s simply too much. Too many great things are happening and even greater things are on the horizon.

We’re about to start work on a brand new state-of-the-art high school for Seguin as well as a modern library for the city.

There are planned improvements to the city’s already robust parks system and the state has turned its attention to significant transportation improvements in the area.

While you can’t cover everything, you can give someone a bite sized chunk of the things that they can see or do around the year if they’re visiting, and cover some of the basics that people who choose to make Seguin their home can benefit from.

This magazine is meant to be useful to newcomers as well as those who have lived here their entire lives. We really want to make it your guidebook and handbook to exploring and experiencing what this great community has to offer.

what’s with the

PECAN?

The so-called “World’s Largest Pecan” is a tourist stop that pays homage to one of the area’s key crops. But the one in front of the courthouse isn’t really the “World’s Largest” — despite the sign.

That honor was snatched away by Brunswick, Mo. for a few years before a larger nut was crafted in Seguin to retake the title in 2011.

That pecan, which travels to parades and special events around the area, makes its home at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center right outside town at what is known as The Big Red Barn.

The area celebrates the honored nut with Pecan Fest every fall, and H-E-B offers a seasonal ice cream in their Creamy Creations line at the start of each year called Texas Vanilla Seguin Pecan.

WELCOME TO

TUSCUMBIA (it almost happened that way)

SEGUIN SNIPS • One of the most famous race horses of Seguin, in the days after the Civil War, was named Seguin, and it carried our colors to win in the State Races in Austin in those days.

•.“Texas,” the horse ridden by Theodore Roosevelt in the charge of San Juan Hill in the Spanish American War, was given to Roosevelt by his cousin, Colonel Moore of Seguin.

• Seguin is famous for its oak trees. The many beautiful oaks of Seguin have names of historical background. Many are estimated to be 500 years old or more; some even as much as 1,000 years old.

• In the early days, there were many beautiful rock fences marking the property lines of the early settlers. Remnants of these can be seen at the east end of Nolte Street and at the corner of East Ireland and North Travis Streets.

Seguin was built on land granted by the Mexican Government to Sir Humphrey Branch, under the Emprassario Grant of Green DeWitt.

This land grant, recorded in the State Land Office at Austin, bears the date of May, 1830. Branch perfected his grant by actually settling on the present townsite in November, 1831. Around 1834, the settlers here moved to Gonzales for protection from the constant attacks by band of Indians.

Prior to 1838, Seguin was known as Walnut Springs. When it was found that another locality in Texas has previously recorded the name of Walnut Springs, Texas, the shareholders voted to adopt a new name.

The choice was between Tuscumbia and Seguin, and Seguin won by 11 votes. The name of Seguin was in honor of Juan N. Seguin, who had been a colonel in the Texas Cavalry at San Jacinto.

On March 24, 1846, an act by the First Legislature read as follow: “…be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Texas that the town of Seguin be declared the Seat of Justice in the County of Guadalupe.”

Then on March 30, 1846, Guadalupe County was created from parts of Bexar and Gonzales counties.

By this Act, Guadalupe County became one of the first 10 counties created by the Legislature of Texas and Seguin actually became a county seat before there was a county to actually be the seat of.

The City of Seguin was incorporated in 1853, with John R. King as its first mayor.

A copy of the “Incorporation of Seguin” was printed in the Seguin Mercury, one of Seguin’s first newspapers.

The Galveston and Harrisburg Railroad was built through Seguin in 1875. The first public school building was erected in 1889, but the first school was taught by Reverend David Thompson in 1842.

RIVER What would life in Seguin be like without the Guadalupe River? Whether wrapping around the golf course and playgrounds at Starcke Park or widening into one of the many lakes dotting the river like beads on a chain, the river measures the pace of life along its banks.

A large variety of birds, reptiles, fish and insects call the river home, adding to the enjoyment of living and playing along the river, but also adding rules and regulations for use that protect the wildlife.

Efforts to keep the water in its natural state not only benefits the wildlife, but keeps the river and lakes as a welcome retreat for anglers, boaters and water skiers.

While local anglers are lured to the river by largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass and channel catfish, many other visitors enjoy opportunities for boating and swimming.

The Guadalupe’s natural beauty has made the river a draw to residents and weekend visitors alike.

Headquartered in Seguin, the GuadalupeBlanco River Authority oversees the water resources of the GBRA 10-county district, which includes Guadalupe County, as the Guadalupe River winds 431 miles from its source near the town of Hunt in the Hill Country to where it dumps into the Gulf of Mexico at San Antonio Bay. GBRA employees manage the operation of drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, water quality testing, hydroelectric operations, water rights and the delivery of stored water from Canyon Reservoir.

The river’s water sustains the area’s most essential needs and has been the root of the region’s most desperate moments.

While the Guadalupe typically meanders placidly through Seguin, several floods in the last two decades have heightened awareness that its peaceful nature can be deceptive.

“Water is an awesome power, and the

floods of 1998 and 2002 were evidence of that power. People who live along the river have become much more conscious about the river and its potential to flood,” said LaMarriol Smith, GBRA’s manager of communication and education.

The river’s watershed covers an area of 6,616 square miles while collecting runoff from rainfall, streams, tributaries and springs flowing from the Edwards Aquifer. Heavy rainfall can have a devastating effect as the water accumulates and rushes downstream.

Four of the larger manmade lakes — Lake McQueeney, Lake Dunlap, Lake Nolte and Lake Placid — break the natural flow of the river by creating reservoirs of fresh water held behind the river’s hydroelectric dams but were unable to control the massive amounts of water in recent floods.

GBRA has worked with emergency management and weather services to help develop flood

contingency plans for the community.

It also works with community work groups and Texas Parks and Wildlife personnel to develop rules and regulations to promote safe and respectful use of the river resources.

“Residents and outfitters along the river are kept abreast of river news through informational meetings with GBRA’s director of project development, chief engineer and other staff,” Smith said, adding that “GBRA manages and disseminates the Hyrdo-Watch and Weather-Net information, advising emergency medical coordinators throughout the basin, the local radio station KWED, and public callers during flood events.”

Additionally, GBRA maintains flood preparedness information, including flood tracking charts for lakes Dunlap, McQueeney, Meadow and Placid on its website at www.gbra.org/flood/default.aspx .

COUNTY LIVING BASICS Q: Do I live in the county?

A: If you live in Seguin you live in the county, but if you live in the county you don’t necessarily live in Seguin. It’s not really a philosophical question.

Q: When is garbage pickup?

A: If you don’t live in the city of Seguin which has a garbage/recycling service, then you’re on your own.

There are serveral firms who offer trash service in the Guadalupe County area. You’ll call one of those companies to start trash service.

Q: What takes the place of other city services?

A: In the county the primary law enforcement comes from the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Department instead of the Seguin Police Department. Fire protection is offered by a number of volunteer fire departments stationed around the area. The paid fire departments in Seguin and Schertz are sometimes called to assist in major fires and medical cases.

Q: What about utilities?

A: Utilities are offered by different groups depending on the service area. Electricity typically comes from the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative which has the service area for much of the unincorporated area of the county. Water service is split across a number of different organizations.

In 2013 the city of Seguin launched curbside recycling efforts for the first time and in 2014 city officials were told that the community was participating at a much higher rate than anticipated.

In the first three months the curbside recycling program collected more than 264 tons of recyclables — including 83.23 tons in Ocbober, 85.12 tons in November and 95.66 tons in December.

Weekly particpation from residents has also steadily climbed — up to 39.2 percent of residents in December of 2013.

The rules for recycling are found on the lids of the recycling cartons that city trash customers get.

The city also holds clean up days where there are options for disposal of other items.

JANUARY

Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on the third Monday in January and Seguin marks the civil rights icon’s life with a full slate of events the weekend before which have included, a talent show, a “Taste of Soul” lunch. It all culminates in the Monday march from Seguin’s Central Park to Texas Lutheran University for a special program at the university’s Jackson Auditorium. The march draws people of all races and ages together.

The first month of the year also sees the county recognize local youth with the annual Youth Livestock and Homemaker’s Show. Children from all across the county come together to show off their animals, baking prowess, photography and other skills. The event usually falls in mid January and ends with a Saturday afternoon auction of the grand champions. See gcys.org for more information.

FEBRUARY

The second month of the year sees the Seguin Education Foundation pull out all the stops for its annual diamond fundraiser.

The event raises money that goes into the classrooms of Seguin ISD schools in special grants to help teachers launch programs and initiatives that the regular budget can’t fund. The highlight of the event is a set of diamonds that participants can win in a raffle.

February also marks the month where the Seguin Commission on the Arts gets together to shine a spotlight on local artists and the arts community. The event, which includes the Color Me Nutty Fun Run (pictured) also includes a variety of events from photography to sculpture to theater. Check out seguinarts.com as the event approaches.

The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce also uses the month for its annual Showcase Seguin that lets local businesses strut their stuff.

As the first quarter of the year wraps up we have a busy march which starts on Texas Independence Day at Sebastopol House in Seguin with the annual Toast to Texas event.

Locals and visitors gather for readings, songs and a toast to the Lone Star State.

There are a couple of food-based events on the month for those who find their tummies rumbling for a little taste of seafood. The first is Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center hosts its big fundraiser of the year with a Cajun Jamboree for those who like their mudbugs. Keep up at seguinolc.org The second is when the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce readies its annual Hotshot’s Reunion Fish Fry which brings back the taste of a Seguin-area institution long after the floodwaters of 1998 shut the door of the famous Hotshot’s Restaurant in McQueeney.

With the help of the restaurant’s staple recipes and family members pitching in, the event in Starcke Park always draws an enormous crowd. Keep up at seguinchamber.com The month also includes a showcase for Teatro de Artes in the Noche De Gala Mariachi Vocalist Competition. The event, hosted at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium offers the community a cultural as well as a social evening of mariachi music and folklórico dancing and draws competitors from around the area. The event also acts as a fundraiser for the organization with tickets in the past selling for $7 at local businesses and the both the Seguin Area and Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

APRIL

April brings Moonlight & Roses as residents gather downtown at the beautiful Walnut Springs Park for a night of music , food and awards.

The month also marks one of the city’s newest celebrations as the community gathers for Earth Day, in conjunction with Trade Days.

The American Cancer Society also holds its annual Relay For Life at the Fairgrounds in the covered arena.

MAY

The month of May sees a pair of cultural events in Seguin with the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration as well as a annual recital for Teatro de Artes.

The Agricultural and Heritage Center, better known locally as the Big Red Barn gets into the act with its annual Ag Festival. Intended as fun for families, the Ag Festival features food booths, educational booths and agriculturally-related commercial booths. You can keep up with the Ag Center’s events at www.texagedu.org.

JUNE

The summer marks the start of the Central Park Concert Series. Come to the park during the early evening with lawn chairs in hand to relax and enjoy a selection of entertaining musical pieces and to sample hotdogs, hamburgers, cold drinks and sno-cones being sold by local Boy Scouts.

The fastest Chihuahuas on four feet take to the race track for the Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual Fiestas Juan Seguin event, but the racing dogs aren’t the only thing on offer. There’s also music and food and games around the Central Park square.

June also sees a local culinary competition as local restaurants and cooks square off at the Silver Center’s Taste of Seguin. Celebrity judges will rate everything from salads to desserts while residents get a chance to sample some of the best stuff to come out of kitchens.

JULY

The month of July has a patriotic flare to it downtown with local radio station KWED’s Freedom Fiesta event, a patriotic concert and the Mayor’s Luncheon — where people have an opportunity to break bread with the mayor at the coliseum. But the highlight of the month comes with the Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade where crowds swallow downtown to watch the Red, White and Blue floats motor down Austin Street past Central Park. People start putting out chairs along the route the day before! The celebration ends with a fireworks display over Starcke Park that lights up the night sky — if the weather and fire danger allows.

July also sees the men and women who keep power flowing showing off their skills at Nolte Island. Power crews from all over the state show up for the Texas Lineman’s Rodeo.

AUGUST

August sees the city celebrate its own birthday with the help of the Seguin Conservation Society. The event includes a proclamation delivered by posse, cake and ice cream for the participants. The event happens at the Heritage Village. You can keep up with the society at www.seguinconservation.org

SEPTEMBER

As the Texas summer finally starts to give way to cooler weather — maybe — Fiesta Patrias Diez y Seis gives local another opportunity for a cultural experience with food, music and fun.

Main Street holds the second of its Trade Days during the month with vendors and groups descending on the Central Park square.

Seguin’s finest canines jockey for votes to become the city’s newest dog ambassador.

The event is a fundraiser for the Guadalupe County Humane Society where every dollar counts as a vote and since its start in 2008 the event has raised more than $30,000 for the humane society.

OCTOBER

This is the most jam-packed month on the Seguin calendar and it’s utterly dominated by the biggest event of the year — and second place isn’t even close. There is the Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo and then everything else. This mammoth event has everything — a barbecue cook off, a parade, competition in just about every type of contest you can imagine and a carnival that draws people to the fairgrounds and event center for miles around. If you can only attend one event, this is the one to put on your bucket list. Keep up at www.gcfair.org The month also sees the arrival of an explosion of orange at the First United Methodist Church on Austin Street in Seguin as the Pumpkin Patch opens for business with great photo opportunities. Buck Fever provides a program for adults and youth to exhibit their previous years of deer harvest, exotic displays, and includes educational/commercial booths. The event consists of two nights of family atmosphere, good food, fellowship, contests, education and fun. This three day event starts on a Friday and runs the entire weekend across multiple locations — including downtown Seguin and the Big Red Barn. The fun-filled family event celebrates area pecan growers and the community’s rural heritage. The event has picked up a lot of steam in recent years, drawing in tourists from around the state who have sung its praises. Things get a little spooky as we approach Halloween as the Seguin Police Department makes a safe place for all the little ghouls and goblins to celebrate the season and get tasty treats to boot.

The spooktacular events don’t end there though as the unseen spirits and spectres that wander some of Seguin’s old homes like the Mosheim (pictured) and businesses are spotlighted as part of the “There’s A Ghost Story Here” tour from the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Another tour conjours up the spirits of Seguin’s past with a tour of the city’s Riverside Cemetery. The tour has included re-enactments of some of Seguin’s most famous residents who have shuffled off this mortal coil.

Seguin has a strong military presence and that shows on Veterans Day in the community.

All of the area organizations come together for a special session at Veterans Park at the corner of Jefferson and Erkel. Local school children also participate as Seguin ISD campuses recognize the day and the local veterans who work for the district.

DECEMBER

Seguin is a city that does Christmas right with several different events with the biggest being Holiday Stroll which kicks off with the Lighted Christmas Parade down Austin Street past Central Park and the lighting of the downtown square which ends with the mayor flipping a switch to light thousands of strands of lights that cover the downtown area and lighting up the night. There’s also a cocoa contest with Sip ’n Stroll where local businesses host people as they stroll around with commemorative cocoa mugs sampling different types.

The Seguin Conservation Society gets into the holiday act as well with its annual Heritage Tour of Homes where residents get a chance to take a look at some of the area’s historic or interesting homes — all decked out in their holiday finery.

Texas Lutheran University also marks the season with one of the hottest tickets in town for its Christmas Vespers. While the event is free, tickets are required.

The Big Red Barn celebrates its Christmas with its own unique touch, setting up for a Country Christmas. The event gives people a chance to wander the historic little village on site and see what Christmas Past was like, without having to deal with a pesky ghost.

Downtown also plays host to Las Posadas during the holiday season as a procession wanders from place to place with Mary and Joseph as they are turned away with no room at the inn as the Christmas tale unfolds.

SYMPHONIC SOUNDS

Local symphony calls Texas Lutheran home Seguin and New Braunfels are the two smallest towns in the US with a professional symphony — The MidTexas Symphony, which performs three times a year in each town. The 2014-15 season, opening on Sept. 14, will be the 37th for this dream of visionary TLU Professor, Anita Windecker.

Making her dream come true over this many years has required the efforts of talented musicians, dedicated volunteers, loyal patrons, and supportive community leaders. Concerts are in part funded from hotel/ motel taxes raised by the two towns, as well as grants, donations, and ticket sales, which represent only about

20 percent of the income.

By TLU presidential decree the Mid-Texas Symphony’s home is at Texas Lutheran University, where concerts are performed at Jackson Auditorium. In New Braunfels, the Symphony enjoys a mutually beneficial relationship with Comal Independent School District, which has led to the use of the Canyon High School Performing Arts Center.

educational programs of the symphony have made him extremely popular with musicians and delighted patrons.

The Symphony’s educational programs are a valuable community resource. Each year, four special concerts introduce about 5,000 area elementary school children to symphonic music.

Sponsored jointly with TLU, the Community Music Academy teaches violin, viola, cello, guitar, and voice to Seguin area school students. Its youth orchestra and youth choir, which performs with the symphony each year, provide additional group instruction.

The symphony has recently helped institute similar programs in New Braunfels and Comal County.

Annually, area third through fifth graders compete individually and as school teams in the Music Memory Competition which teaches them to identify music and composers.

Rotating among voice, piano, strings, and winds, the Young Artist Competition offers cash prizes and opportunities to perform with the Symphony for college age Texans. The winners are so impressive that they are often invited back for additional performances with the Symphony.

Opportunities for adults to participate are equally enriching. Singers may perform in The Mid-Texas Symphony Chorus in December with the orchestra, and

area string players may audition to join the orchestra through additional rehearsals throughout the year.

Volunteers from diverse backgrounds make it possible to have a quality symphony within an affordable budget and with modest ticket prices. In addition to an allvolunteer Board of Directors, the Symphony is fortunate to have an active Guild with chapters in Seguin and New Braunfels.

The Mid-Texas Symphony Guild offers middle school children the opportunity to learn social graces through the Cotillion Program. Its debutante programs in both cities prepare high school ladies and their escorts for lives of leadership, teamwork, and volunteerism. Classes and workshops throughout the year teach these qualities as well as etiquette. Debutantes serve the symphony as ushers and greeters and attend the concerts, where they meet the maestro and the musicians. The climax of the season is the Debutante Balls in both cities, where the young women are formally presented.

Having met a grand total of 101 times on the gridiron, the annual battle between the Matadors and Unicorns is among the state’s oldest and most revered rivalry games.

New Braunfels holds a sizable edge in the overall series, but Seguin broke through for its first win in seven years in 2013 after outlasting the Unicorns in a wild 38-31 overtime thriller at Matador Stadium.

Both schools welcome new head coaches into the mix in 2014 and will begin a brand new chapter in the growing history of the Guadalupe River Bowl.

It’s a game so big that even the towns’ mayors get into the act, annually wagering homegrown Seguin pecans against New Braunfels’ signature smoked sausage.

The county’s smallest rivalry as far as enrollment is concerned has also become the most decorated contest annually.

Both Lifegate and Fredericksburg Heritage have captured state titles in recent history, and each has multiple district championships under its belt.
