Le tter from the President Dear Friends of Bishop Kelley High School, In early February, popular scientist Bill Nye “The Science Guy”, a believer in evolution, debated Ken Ham, President of the Creation Museum. The debate drew national attention and, at least for a few days, the tug of war between science and faith was front and center. Both Nye and Ham made passionate arguments in defense of their beliefs. From a Catholic perspective, the arguments of both Nye and Ham fell short.

It is a commonly -held belief in today’s world that science and faith are at odds. To be a believer in God is to be anti-science, and to believe in the marvel of modern science is to disavow faith. Not so!

The pontificate of the newly canonized St. John Paul II was a turning point in the Catholic Church’s understanding of science. Time and time again, St. John Paul II, and his successor Pope Benedict XVI, preached about the link between faith and reason, belief in God and belief in the power of science. St. John Paul II also apologized for the times when the Catholic Church got it wrong.

In this issue of the Ambassador, we explore the link, indeed the sacred bond, between faith and science. In the classrooms of Bishop Kelley, this link is seen day after day by our students. What our students learn is that science is a gift from God and that God has given us science to make the world a better place. The link between science and faith is no more evident each year than on November 15 when the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of St. Albert the Great. St. Albert is a 13th century scientist who studied at the University of Padua and the University of Paris. He was an expert in biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography, metaphysics, and mathematics. He was an expert scientist and he was also a Catholic bishop. Each year on November 15, Bishop Kelley Physics teacher Mary Jo Othon leads the all-school prayer.

Today is the feast day of St. Albert the Great, the Patron Saint of Scientists. St. Albert lived during a time in our history when many great scientific minds challenged the teachings of the Church. St. Albert believed that the great wealth of knowledge that science could bring us was only one of many instruments that we will use in God’s plan for us. We are given many tools to help us navigate our journey but we must remember that God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. Today, let us pray for strength and faith to always trust in God’s plan. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

We have indeed been given tools by God to heal others and to bring about good in the world.

Science without faith can lead us down a path where we think that we are God. Faith without science ignores an important piece of creation that God has given us to help ourselves. No doubt, we need the discussion and debate regarding these important subjects and Bishop Kelley is a place where we take faith seriously, and also science. May this legacy continue for many years to come.

The cover of this Ambassador was inspired by the many advances and accomplishments Bishop Kelley has had in science and technology this year. Whether it be the addition of campus-wide wireless, the new science lab, or the geothermal heating and air system, BK, with the help of generous donors, is constantly working to provide students with the technology and facilities they need to perform at high levels.

And it’s not just great facilities, but more importantly, great faculty. Mr. Brian Arenson was recognized by the Diocese of Tulsa as the 2013 James A. Robinson Teacher of the Year. He teaches pre-AP Honors biology I, Biology II, Zoology, and AP Chemistry. Mr. Arenson has taught at Bishop Kelley for 32 years and has mentored both students and new teachers over the years. We are proud to have Mr. Arenson represent Bishop Kelley’s outstanding faculty.

Brains Academic Highlights

National Merit Recognizes 13 in the Class of 2014 Bishop Kelley is proud to announce that 13 students in the Class of 2014 have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Finalists are Mariah Rubino, Peter Simmons, Alex Moore, and Joseph Teter (pictured in front row).

Commended students include Josiah Siddiki, Caitlin Stillson, Shane Muselman, Katie Roberts, David Potts, Meredith Crouch, Lennon Luckadoo, Kate McAndrews, and Ben Brown.

Congratulations to these outstanding students, their families, and their teachers. Bishop Kelley has had 34 Semi-Finalists in the past four years.

New Classes Come To Kelley Digital Media Teaches New Aspects of Journalism What started with sports webcasts two years ago developed into a popular elective. Students gain professional skills, including the ability to shoot, edit, and produce digital video.

String Theory Bishop Kelley’s String Ensemble is new to the curriculum for 2013-14. Their music is a welcome addition to all-school Masses, the Christmas Concert, Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and other events.

Br. Bernardine Program, A Decade of Success The Brother Bernardine Scholars program was designed by Judith McMasters and implemented in 2003. It is a rigorous academic enrichment program named to represent the high standards set

by Bishop Kelley. In ten years, 125 students have graduated as Brother Bernardine Scholars. In May of 2013, Judith McMasters was named the first honorary Brother Bernardine Scholar.

Metamorp Campus Improvements Stadium Renovation & Expansion Project Phase I Phase I is a $1.7 million project that is already underway and is scheduled to be completed in June 2014. New facilities include new restrooms on the home side of the field and a new building on the visitor side. The new building will house visitor locker rooms (that will also be used by Kelley students), coaches offices, concessions, laundry and restrooms. Concrete foundations and walkways were donated by Tom Snyder and Anchor Stone.

About 40% of students play a sport while they attend Bishop Kelley. The expansion highly impacts: Boys and Girls Soccer, Track, Baseball, Football, Softball and Spirit Squad. Comet fans and visitors will also benefitfrom the upgrades.

Phase II & III We are also working on funding for Phase II and III, which includes plans for increased seating,a new larger press box,compliance with the American Disabilities Act,and field house expansion and renovation. Expanded seating will help BK host playoff games, track meets,and other large groups of fans. Beginning this Fall, freshman football plays in a 6A conference.

Seating will expand from 1,400 to 4,200 and includes some chairback seats and hand rails on all aisles. We’ll need your help to do it!

With gifts from BK alumni and friends, we were able to “dress up” the school with banners around campus, lighting and paint for the Bishop Kelley sign on Hudson Avenue, and exterior painting for the STC building along with a beautiful new art gallery wall inside. A new bus transports students from Muskogee and Broken Arrow each morning.

Theory in Science Department

Science Lab Within the last year, Bishop Kelley has a new Science Lab with the most advanced technology available in any area high school. This was made possible by the Bertlesmeyer, Snapp, and Westbrock families.

You may never have seen science teachers Mr. Arenson and Mrs. Othon as excited as when they got to choose equipment for the new lab! It has force sensors, accelerometers, pH monitors, voltage probes, and carbon dioxide sensors, to aid in every science discipline. Students collect and analyze real time data, and are able to share the data through a wireless connection using a LabQuest device and even their own cell phones and iPod devices. These devices also interface with our existing SMART Board technologies. Its wireless connectivity encourages collaboration and personalized learning.

A large classroom in the STC building is a science lab equipped with Vernier LabQuest 2 interfaces. They have large, high resolution touch screens that make it easy and intuitive to collect, analyze and share data from experiments, and can be used as a computer interface for advanced analysis and video features.

robotics Bishop Kelley has had strong contenders in Robotics competitions over the past few years. Coach Mary Jo Othon is getting younger students excited about competing in Robotics when the BK team conducts demonstrations in area schools. At a Diocesan in-service in February, Mrs. Othon made a presentation to about 20 potential coaches from Diocesan middle schools. She was awarded the 2014 Tex Richardson Engineering & Science Guidance Award for her leadership in First Robotics by the Tulsa Engineering Foundation, Inc.

Fab-ulous Hovercrafts Pre-Algebra students in Mrs. Kathy Pickup’s class built hovercrafts in a series of classes held at the Fab Lab Tulsa Hardesty Center.

“This applied approach to learning is critically important to 21st century workforce development,” said Fab Lab Director Nathan Prichett. The grant for the project was generously provided by the Hardesty Family Foundation.

A LIFE PREPARATORY SCHOOL Academic achievement is a hallmark of a Bishop Kelley education. As a “Life Preparatory School”, our mission encompasses aspects of faith, service, and community that are alive in our school every day. Here are just a few examples of the the past year.

Perfect Scores Matt Hanisch, Joseph Mellor and Devin Raine, made perfect scores on the National Latin Exam. Steven Trammell is their Latin teacher.

AP Scholars Bishop Kelley had one National AP Scholar and 53 AP Scholars last year. 196 students took 332 Advanced Placement tests. BK offers 17 AP courses and 21 Honors classes.

Advanced Placement Classes Twelve BK teachers will attend classes for Pre-AP and Advanced Placement classes. These classes help BK offer curriculum that builds each year to prepare for AP curriculum and testing. Training classes are in Oklahoma, South Carolina, and California. Funding for the training is provided by federal grants.

Academic Bowl BK’s Academic Bowl Team won the State Championship for the third time in nine years (2005, 2012). Peter Simmons made the All-State Team.

Breezeway Staff Bishop Kelley’s Breezeway staff brought home the James F. Paschal Memorial Sweepstakes Award for the highest judged scores for student newspapers in the state and other top honors from the 2014 Oklahoma Scholastic Media spring conference.

Academic State Championships 5A Comet Volleyball and 6A Girls Basketball earned 2013 Academic State Championships.

A Life Transformed Each year, the Bishop’s Medal is awarded to a student who best contributes to the life and spirit of the school, shares gifts and talents with other members of the Bishop Kelley community, represents the ideals and goals of Bishop Kelley, shows genuine concern for others, witnesses Gospel values, and exemplifies excellence in academic performance.

Georges Habib was the 2013 recipient. Father O’Brien said, “He exemplifies a spirit of joy that is Christ-centered and that is absolutely contagious. Whether it’s through his involvement in Search, Kairos, Student Council, Class Board, Link Crew or in serving as a manager for our football, basketball and track programs, he is dependable, optimistic, warm, friendly, hardworking, and full of zeal. This young man strives to positively impact the lives of others every day. When Georges came to Bishop Kelley four years ago from Lebanon, he spoke French and Arabic but his English wasn’t strong. He worked hard and spent his four years truly caring for others. Despite living so far from his parents, he has succeeded academically and served as the President of his Senior Class. Father concluded, “If you asked me who his best friends are, I wouldn’t be able to tell you because he’s friends with everyone, whether a senior or freshman, outgoing or introverted, he is a friend.”

Georges returned to Bishop Kelley just three weeks after graduation with a donation and a pledge to help with the funds needed for BK to qualify for a matching grant for the geothermal project. “Bishop Kelley is my second home. I love Bishop Kelley. I could help, so I did.” Georges is a student at Tulsa Community College and he plans to continue with a degree in radiology.

Summer Seminar Bishop Kelley and our nominees Christy Hellard and Tiffany Stevens have been selected to participate in the Notre Dame Science and Religion Summer Seminar in June of 2014 -2015. While acknowledging areas of conflict and the need for respecting separate disciplinary subject matters and methods, the seminar will address areas where dialogue between religion and science can be fruitful and where integration is possible. bishopkelley.org

Adrenalin Kelley Athletics Comet PRide Golf With a Metro Lakes Title this year and a Golf State Championship last year, Boys Golf had another great season with Brody King placing 4th at State.

Volleyball Earned an Academic State Championship, and a State Runner-Up title.

Soccer (Girls) Coach Troy Tokarcihik is developing young players, since seven seniors who went to Division I college programs from Bishop Kelley’s 2013 State Championship team. 14th Girls Soccer 6A State Championship in 2013.

Soccer (Boys) Phil Barkley joined the Comets this year as head coach of the Boys Soccer Team.

Cross Country 100 runners strong this year.

Wrestling Brice Inbody took 2nd at State in 182lb weight class.

Football Made the playoffs for the 16th consecutive year.

Lacrosse Many students play on the new Comet Lacrosse club team.

Basketball (Boys) Reached the final four in the State Tournament, the first time since 1999.

Baseball BK defeated Owasso four times this season and broke their winning streak that was 4th longest in the nation. The Comets defeated the Rams again to win Regionals and finished 6A State Runner Up.

Tennis Swept the Metro Lakes Tournament with Conference Players of the Year Drew Gunsch and Caroline Reynolds. All-Conference went to Drew Gunsch and to Caroline Reynolds, Madeline Hall, and Annalena Dickman. Coaches of the Year are Tyler Bell and Elaine Johnson. Madison Westby won her 4th State title at #1 Singles.

Chemistry BK Sweethearts

Sharon Kamphaus ‘83 & Brad Hammond ‘83

Brad and Sharon Hammond first met “in the B wing during Mr. Lowry’s English class freshman year, first quarter, first hour,” Sharon said. Their first date was the Aloha dance their junior year.

Brad was the quarterback on the football team and Sharon was the pom squad captain.

They began dating their junior year and continued dating all through college.

Brad went on to Princeton and Sharon attended OU. They kept their relationship going long distance by

Brian and Maggie Tims “were really good friends” beginning their sophomore year, and “talked on the phone a lot,” Brian said.

“I always had a crush on Maggie but I was way too scared to do anything about it. She was the nicest and prettiest girl in school,” Brian said.

While at Kelley, Brian played basketball and soccer. He went on to play soccer at Christian Brothers University in Memphis.

City Council. She was on homecoming court every year and was homecoming queen her senior year. Maggie was voted Miss Kelley her senior year, as well.

Brian and Maggie were also both involved with the Search retreat.

While at Bishop Kelley, Brian and Maggie made lifelong friends. “Many of our best friends today are people who we went to high school with at Bishop Kelley. Now we are raising families with these same people,” Brian said.

They have one daughter, a sophomore at Bishop Kelley,

“writing a ton of letters and calling each other once a week,” Sharon said.

“Bishop Kelley means family to me,” Sharon said. Brad and Sharon have three children, among many extended relatives who also have graduated, or will graduate, from BK. Sharon is very active in many Bishop Kelley organizations such as the PTO, auction fundraising, and the Bishop Kelley Booster Club. She also helps the boys tennis

and one son who will be a freshman next year.

Brian and Maggie are extremely grateful for Bishop Kelley.

“We cannot imagine what our lives would have been like if we had not attended Kelley,” Brian said.

“Bishop Kelley feels like home,” Maggie said.

If Brian and Maggie had not gone to Bishop Kelley,“we do not know how our lives would have turned out but we are glad we did not have to find out,” Brian said.

Brad and Sharon have been married for more than 26 years, and “can’t even imagine” what life would be like if they had not attended Bishop Kelley. “I think it’s [Bishop Kelley] the best place ever - that’s where I met my sweetheart!” Brad said.

Lindsay and Matt Stoulil were acquaintances with common friends and interests at Bishop Kelley.

Lindsay was active in volleyball, Anchor Club, Search, Newspaper, Yearbook, and Dance, while Matt participated in Key Club, Student Council, Class Board, Kairos, Newspaper, and Yearbook.

Matt also played in a band with his classmates.

Matt said that he later found out Lindsay “rarely missed” the band’s shows.

Six years after graduation, Lindsay was living in New York, and Matt was living in Kansas City. The couple came to Tulsa and reconnected in the 2003 Christmas season.

Lindsay and Matt now have two daughters, Georgia and June.

The Stoulil family currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, but thanks to social media,

Kristi and Rob Grisaffe met their freshman year, and Kristi knew she was “destined to be his best friend,” she said.

“God knew exactly what he was doing.”

Their sophomore year, they had five out of six classes together.

Although they did not start dating until the end of their senior year, “they were great friends all throughout high school... talking on the phone and hanging out with the same group of friends,” Kristi said.

Though Gary and Jane Oberste did not attend Bishop Kelley together, they knew from their first date that they were meant to be. When they were introduced, Jane was “in grad school...at Oklahoma State full time and he was teaching at BK and going to grad school in the evenings at Oklahoma State,” Jane said.

Gary’s yearning to teach at Bishop Kelley came at a very early age. Gary said that “very

young, like freshman year, I said, ‘You can get paid doing this? This is the perfect job.

That doesn’t even seem like a job! I knew right then that I’d come back to Bishop Kelley.”

Jane’s first year of teaching business classes at Bishop Kelley also came with an engagement to Gary. Jane and Gary recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this past November.

In 2007, Lindsay and Matt made the trip from Brooklyn to Tulsa for their ten-year reunion.

The couple is extremely thankful “for that serendipitous post-graduation encounter” that brought them together, Matt said.

“We made a lot of good friends and memories at BK, in addition to getting a great education,” Matt and Lindsay wrote.

While attending Bishop Kelley, Kristi was involved in a wide variety of activities, including soccer, basketball, yearbook editor, class board, Spanish club, homecoming court, and girl of the month.

Rob played football and basketball for the Comets. Like Kristi, Rob was also involved in the Spanish club.

The Grisaffes remain involved in the Bishop Kelley community. Kristi worked at Bishop Kelley for 10 years

Jane is now the Director of Admissions at Bishop Kelley.

She previously taught in the business department and coached girls basketball.

Gary is the Dean of Student Activities and interim Director of Alumni Relations.

and helps with Trivia Night and various other alumni activities.

Rob is on the Bishop Kelley Advisory Council and chairs the Advancement Committee.

Kristi and Rob have four children together.

“We can’t wait for [our children] to be influenced by the same people who made an impact on us,” Kristi said. “Bishop Kelley is a part of who we are individually, as a couple, and as a family.”

New Director of Alumni Relations

Megan Schaunaman is joining the Advancement staff in a new full-time role beginning this summer. “Megan has the strong ties within the BK community, and the outgoing, welcoming personality needed to engage BK alumni who wish to reconnect with their alma mater or become even more involved at BK”, said Doug Thomas, Director of Advancement.

“She will do a wonderful job in establishing a new level of engagement among BK alumni who wish to become a greater part of our mission.”

Megan has taught math at BK since she graduated from the University of Oklahoma. As a teacher, Speech and Debate coach, cheer coach and choreographer for musicals, Megan has demonstrated energy and excellence.

She has a Masters of Educational Administration, Curriculum and Supervision from the University of Oklahoma.

Br. “Gus” Augustine Kossuth Brother “Gus” Augustine Kossuth, who entered eternal life on January 11, 2014, was the Director of Bishop Kelley from 1979-84. He started the Bishop Kelley Endowment Fund, the Annual Dinner Auction, and the Girls Golf Team. Mary Nichols Culver ’81 wrote, “Loved Br. Gus!! He, along with Mary Pat Fager, Patricia Cunningham, Debbie Walters and I, started the girls golf team at BK! He LOVED golf and played many weekends at LaFortune. At our Class of ‘81 graduation, each graduate had a golf tee, and as we shook his hand, we each slipped him a golf tee. He nonchalantly put each in his pocket. He had almost 200 tees in his pocket that night and got a big kick out of it!”

Brother Joel McGraw said, “He was the boss in Tulsa my three years there. He saved the school from financial ruin and then after the fire in the main building, he got it going again.” Alumni parent Dr. John Vosburgh said, “What you see is what you get. That was the reason he was well-liked. He worked hard and lived simply. He was very thrifty.

He loved trees and plants and planted much in Tulsa, some of which got mowed down in its infancy by Br. Bernardine on the tractor. Even when Br. Gus was the boss, he let others take the spotlight.”

In Memory of Lynn Martin In 1989, Lynn Martin began operating the cafeteria at Bishop Kelley High School. Her company, Gourmet on the Go, also ran six other school lunch programs. Lynn helped provide meals for many children who could not afford lunch. She catered special events at Kelley and supported the school in many ways. She enjoyed many friendships throughout the BK community and was inducted into the Bishop Kelley Hall of Fame in 2012.

Lynn was diagnosed in 1999 with acute liver failure. She was grateful for the gift of an organ donation, which extended her life until February 28, 2014. Always volunteer-minded, Lynn had a renewed sense of mission about it after her transplant. Lynn helped inmates prepare for life after prison. As an adjunct instructor at Tulsa Community College, she drove weekly to Hominy to lead classes at the Dick Conner Correctional Center, preparing inmates to find work in food services. She volunteered with TCC’s Second Chance Scholarship program and was a longtime board member and chairwoman of Workforce Tulsa. She received service awards from Catholic Charities’ Madonna House and San Miguel Catholic School. Lynn is the sister of cafeteria manager Caroline Quinn and the aunt of Braden ’17 and Kyle Quinn. Gifts in Lynn’s memory can be made to the Bishop Kelley Endowment.

Jack and I, our three daughters, and eight grandchildren have all been blessed to have received a Catholic education. Assuming our grandchildren continue on this path, it will be 156 years of Catholic schools. When we went to school, the cost of this education was never considered, but in today’s environment, we as parents and grandparents must help support our schools for future generations. In thanksgiving for these blessings, we have

chosen to do this through Legacy Planning for Bishop Kelley.

GO for Catholic Schools GO is a scholarship fund that offers tuition assistance for students in need. In supporting GO, donors can make a gift to Catholic schools in the Diocese of Tulsa and receive significant tax credits and deductions (Oklahoma residents only). In 2013, donors contributed $260,068.44 to GO. All of that money will help hundreds of families send their children to Catholic schools, including Bishop Kelley, in the upcoming school year.
