“It was an honor and a pleasure to serve on the Fair board for 16 years. I made many friends along the way and will always remember all of the great times shared with fellow directors. Thank you for this honor and allowing me to be a part of such a great organization.”
Edward Krauskopf Edward joined the fair board in 1990, following in the footsteps of his father, Victor Krauskopf, and his great-grandfathers, Oscar Krauskopf and Otto Henke — all lifetime honary directors. He served on numerous committees, including: safety, dance, bar, commercial exhibits, Scholarship Fest, Easter Fires and mutton busting. Edward and his wife, Melody, still help out occasionally at various events. Edward started working for Krauskopf Bros. Inc in 1976 and continues operating the water well service since selling the John Deere tractor side of the business in 1999. He has four children: Evan, Brandon and Christian Krauskopf and Crystal Meadow, as well as three grandchildren, Morgan and Paisley Krauskopf and Wyatt Meadow. Edward Krauskopf
Charles O. Schumann The 126th Gillespie County Fair Catalog is dedicated, in part, to the memory of Charles Schumann who served on the Fair Board from 1977 until his death in 2013. He contributed on various committees and volunteered during all Fair Association-sponsored events. He became an Honorary Lifetime Director in 2012 after 16 years of service. Charles enjoyed working in the grandstands during races. He will also be remembered fondly for donating and preparing bacon-wrapped jalapenos for the annual Scholarship Fest. His love and appreciation for the Fair Association remained strong throughout his lifetime and he considered it a great privilege to be associated with it.
Charles O. Schumann
Charles was a dedicated member, serving with a willing heart and positive attitude. We, the directors of the 126th Gillespie County Fair will greatly miss his presence and feel privileged to honor his wife, Mary Anne, his two sons and their spouses — Scott and Reina, and Bret and Tiffani — as well as his grandsons, Nathan, Justin and Wesley, and his step-granddaughters, Raquel Boeck and Kayla Contreras.

ittle girls look up to them and want to be them, little boys want to hold their hand and get their picture taken with them, and they are the fair queen and duchesses. After getting the crown, it looks like all smiles, but the road to the crown is a long and winding one. To begin the process, applications are available from the fair office at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds or online at www. gillespiefair.com. Girls must be a sophomore or junior enrolled in a Gillespie County High School for the 2014-2015 school year. Each girl must be in good standing at the high school and maintain a minimum grade average of 75 for the year. Applicants must also have attended a Gillespie County high school during the 2013-2014 school year. The girls must not be married or have ever been married, or have a child or have ever had a child. Girls also must not have been charged with any misdemeanor or felony, excluding minor traffic violations. Applicants must have written consent signed by her parent(s) and/or legal guardian to enter the contest. After turning in their applications, girls must attend a mandatory meeting with the directors, other contestants and reigning court to discuss what happens fair Friday and what to expect. One or both parents and/or legal guardian must attend the
meeting. On fair Friday, the girls ride the contestant float in the parade. After that, the girls go to the fair grounds and conduct an individual interview with a panel of judges. Later that evening, the girls go on stage and are asked a question in front of an audience during the crowning ceremony. The girls are then chosen by the out of town judges to be queen along with four duchesses. The newly crowned girls then shadow the reigning court the Sunday of fair weekend at the horse races to learn details of presenting blankets. The reign of the new court does not officially start until January, so they travel with the previous year’s court to get hands-on experience. “My favorite part was being a role model for young children,” Camry Weinheimer, 2013 fair queen, said. “The children look up to you, especially the girls. I always tried to take the time to talk to them. I love to see how their faces would light up when they realized I was waiting to talk to them. It might not have made a difference to me, but it made a huge one to them.” In January, the girls have to tear down the old float and build the one they will be riding for the year. “I never realized how much our fair association goes above and beyond in activities that benefit the youth and community,
Blue Ribbon Summer until I was part of the Gillespie County Fair court,” MaKayla Jenschke, 2011 duchess, said. “Everywhere I went, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment of where I was from and what I was representing.” Attending parades does not start until April, and around the end of May, the girls go across Texas to different parades almost every Saturday morning through the summer. “My favorite part has been spending time and making memories with the girls on the court, their families, their friends, the directors and the fair association as a whole,” Kasie Vestal, 2014 duchess said. “No matter what we are doing, we always make it fun, we always laugh, and we always leave a lasting impression on those around us.” The girls also attend horse races to make blanket presentations to winners, the Gillespie County Youth Livestock Show, PBR and attend Scholarship Fest. “It is an honor to be able to travel the state of Texas representing the oldest continuous county fair in Texas with my court,” Vestal said. The reigning Gillespie County Fair Queen is Kelsie Jenschke.
THE ROYAL COURT Representing Fredericksburg and Gillespie County in many parades and events throughout Central Texas this year are: Queen Kelsie Jenschke is the daughter of Eddie and Angela Hubertus. She will be a senior at Fredericksburg High School (FHS) this fall. Duchess MaKenzie Goehmann, daughter of Mark and Penny Goehmann, will be a senior at FHS when classes resume this fall. Duchess Rachel Howell, daughter of Ryan and Tommie Bailey, is also an incoming FHS senior. Duchess Mason DeLong, daughter of Lee and Sherrie DeLong, is the only FHS junior on the queen’s court. Duchess Kasie Vestal, daughter of Hal and Tanya Vestal, will also be entering her senior year at FHS this fall.

How soon did planning for the 126th Gillespie County Fair begin? Almost immediately after the 125th fair ended in August 2013. Planning the county fair is not a one-man job. It takes about 300 members on 43 committees and thousands of volunteer hours to make it all come together. All these committees work to provide something for a wide array of people. Throughout the year, committees work on completing their tasks for the fair. Work on the parade begins around the spring. It takes hundreds of volunteer hours to put together the fair, and the parade is only one part of the large undertaking. Officials send about 600 invitations to individuals, clubs and businesses from here and surrounding towns and counties, and some places even farther away. While there is really not an assigned date or month for working on any particular aspect of the parade, the GCFFA usually sends out the parade invitations in June. They establish a cut-off
date by which participants must have submitted their entry to be judged. The last two weeks tend to be very hectic for Tim Dooley, who heads up the parade planning, and the fair office, as some will call and submit their parade entries over the phone and others will call to cancel. As the entries start coming in to the office, Dooley comes out about once a week, picks them up, and starts placing them in the line-up. “It’s a lot of preparation and setup,” Dooley said. “I don’t know what all will come up on those few days, but as long as your committees work together and know what’s going on, everything falls into place.” On Thursday, Aug. 21, the GCFFA will accept entrees in the exhibition hall to be judged, and at 5 p.m. the gates will open for the Gillespie County Fair. That night, the GCFFA will work on setting the order and arranging all the entrees in the parade the next day. The 126th Gillespie County Fair runs Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 21-24.

The Gillespie County Fair has been part of the community for 126 years, and from carnival rides to horse racing to earning the right to say, “my apple pie is the best,” everyone in the county has a special memory of the fair. Some memories go back to the 1960s and 1970s before the fair grounds moved from South Adams Street to State Highway 16 South. “I always was excited for the fair because it was around the time of my birthday,” Judy Moldenhauer Abbott said. Most of her memories from her childhood focus on enjoying the rides and playing the games during the carnival. “Us kids would be playing the games or going on the rides, and when we ran out of money, we ran back to our parents to get a couple of more quarters to keep us going,” Abbott said. If a contestant managed to win at one of the carnival games, their trophy remained with them throughout the years. “I still have a red and white teddy bear that I won at the color wheel,” she said. In addition to the teddy bear, Abbott still has a Siamese cat lamp. Memories of the fair do not end at the carnival. Debbie Ernst remembers the excitement of winning blue ribbons, watching concerts (especially George Straight in 1983) and betting on the horse races. We watched the horse races from the box seats, and we drew cards from a deck to pick the horse we would put a quarter on, she said. Perhaps the fondest memories involve being with the family. “In the late-1960’s to mid-1970’s, each year my grandparents would take us to the fair,” Stacey Hickson said. “I remember the rides and most of all the horse races.” For some fair-goers, like Petra Valderaz, their fair memories are spending time with friends. In 1962, she went to the fair with her two friends, and she still has a poster from that fair. “We always had a good time,” she said remembering her trips to the fair as a teenager with her friends.

friends can compete in a tractor pull. Teams of men or women will compete for fun to see who can pull a tractor set to neutral the fastest. The competition is free of charge. A blacksmith will be on site during the event, and the Hill Family House will be displayed. The Hill Family House is a demonstration that shows what a farm house looked like in the 1920’s. The four-room house is com-
plete without running water or electricity. Each day, a threshing demonstration will be given to show how settlers used to separate grain from the chaff. Due to restrictions, activities will begin after the completion of the horse races; however, during the races there will be demonstrations of threshing, baling and the Hill Family House will be open. 3.) The official program number of the horse or horses for the bet. It was noted that bettors should not use the horse’s name. For example, say: “In the first race, I would like $2 to Win on number one.” or “In the second race, I would like a $2 Exacta with 7-2.”
Racing glossary A
Across the Board: Bet a horse to win, place and show, and if the horse wins, the bettor collects all three ways.
D
Daily Double: In a “Daily Double”, the bettor picks the winners of two consecutive races designated as “Daily Double” in the official race program. The wager must be made before the start of the first of the two races. For example: “$2 Daily Double 8-9” means the bettor has selected the 8 horse in the first half and the 9 horse in the second half.
E
Exacta: Pick the top two finishers in the exact order in which they finish. Example: “$2 exacta 1-2” means the number one horse has to finish first and the number two horse has to finish second. Exacta Box: Bettors can “box” two, three or more horses to cover a number of possible combinations. For example: a three-horse exacta box would make for six combinations and would cost $12 for a $2 bet. A “$2 Exacta Box 3-4-5” means any two of the three horses must finish first and second, in any order.
Q
Quinella: Pick the top two finishers in any order in the race. Example: “$2 Quinella 1-2” means the one and two horses finishes first and second in any order. Quinella Box: Choose more than two horses for a Quinella box.
For example, a three-horse box (three wagers) would cost $6, a fourhorse box (six wagers) costs $12 and a five-horse box (10 wagers) costs $20. Of those horses selected, two of them must finish first and second, in any order.
S
Superfecta: Pick the top four finishers in a race in the exact order.
T
Trifecta: Pick the top three finishers in the exact order. Example: “$2 Trifecta 7-8-9” means the seven horse must finish first, the eight horse must finish second and the nine horse must finish third. Trifecta Box: The Trifecta Box includes every possible combination that couldresult from the selected horses. Example: “$2 Trifecta box 4-5-6”, means those three horses must finish first, second and third in any order. The $2 bet would cost $12. A $2 four-horse Trifecta box costs $48 and a $2 five-horse Trifecta box costs $120. Twin Trifecta: Like the daily double, this bet involves two races designated as “Twin Trifecta” in the race program. To win, the bettor must pick the first, second and third place finishers in exact order in the first half of the designated race. After the first race is declared official and before the second race is run, the bettor exchanges the winning ticket and selects the first three horses in the exact order of the second race of the “Twin Trifecta”.

Some things never change
Take a look back at the fair through the ‘fours’
As with everything, some things are bound to change over time; however, when it comes to the Gillespie County Fair, some never do. Some of these will be able to be seen at the 126th fair set for Aug. 21-24. Now to go back in time by the decades to see what the fair has come from to become what it is today.
1924
The 38 Gillespie County Fair was held at the 400 block between South Adams and South Lincoln. This was the third site of the fair and is still referred to as “the old fair grounds.” The HEB grocery store now occupies this area. The fair opened at 10 a.m. on Aug. 22 and ended on Aug. 24. Prices for the grounds were: $.50 for adults, children 6-15 were $.25. Grandstand seating was $.25. Parking was $.25 per vehicle, $3 for an th

automobile with passengers, and $.25 for saddle or lead horses. The officers were Wm. Schneider, president; R.L. Kott, vice president; J.E. Bell, secretary, and M.J. Bier-
schwale, treasurer.
1934
The fair was held Aug. 24-26. Admission prices were $.25 for adults, $.15 for children and $.25 for cars.
Grandstand seating was $.25 for adults, $.15 for children, $.40 for reserved seats, and $.50 for box seats. Livestock competition was only open to people in Southwest Texas. The first and second days of the fair, two horse races were run each day, while on the third day, three races were run. Entrance fees for each horse was $2.50.
1944
The fair was cancelled due to World War II.
1954
The winner of the Gillespie Fair Derby in 1954 was “Flying Dutchman.” The horse set a new track record with a time of 1:53 minutes for the ‘mile and seventy’ distance. Fair Queen Elaine McKay awarded the horse the champion blanket. All smiles after
the win were (from left) Jimmie Hughes, co-trainer; Henry Bossman, owner; Ad Stieler; McKay; Jockey B. Hughes, and Jack Hughes, co-trainer. — Standard-Radio Post Histoical Files
The parade kicked off fair weekend on Aug. 20 with 100 units going down Main Street. The exhibition of animals started on Aug. 20 at 8 a.m. and competition was open to anyone. The crowd did not set a record that year. A record was set on the horse track on the final race run on Sunday. “Flying Dutchman,” owned by Henry Bossman, crossed the finish line in the ‘mile and seventy’ distance with jockey E. Hughes, with a time of 1:53.

The previous record was set by “Speedy” in 1950 with a time of 1:54.
1964
The 76th fair was the first year that grandstand seating was the same for both children and adults at $.70. Rita Neidigh was queen with Karen Stobaugh and Jennabeth Klett being duchesses. After a storm Saturday afternoon, the Saturday grandstand show was canceled. The livestock show was the most outstanding ever, according to the newspaper article. Also, “the night shows were the best that have been offered here.” Officers were Rudy Olfers, president; Wm. Petmecky, administrative assistant; Curtis Cameron, vice president; Billy Metzger, treasurer; Belton Klinksiek, recording secretary, and Mrs. Bill Petmecky, secretary.
1974
This was one of the last fairs held at the “old fair grounds.” “The Golden Carlos Twins” was the most popular grandstand show throughout the fair. The twins performed an acrobatic act. The Gillespie County Heart Association was there giving free blood pressure tests to anyone who wanted or needed one. Cindy Olfers reigned as the 1974 queen along with duchesses Bernadine Fritz and Linda Beyer. A total of 21 horse races were run over the three-day period.

Cool off, place bet at The Race Barn Place a bet on horses or dogs, get a meal and cold one, and escape the summer heat. That’s the recipe for success at The Race Barn, which has served Gillespie County horse racing fans for more than a decade. Through simulcasting, racing fans can wager as if they were sitting at one of the many tracks around the nation. The Race Barn has more than 30 television sets (including two giant screens) where racing programs from any track can also be purchased. The facility also went non-smoking last year and began table service. Its menu draws a regular lunch crowd and
Thursday night crowd. Its largest crowds are on the eight live race days at the local track, during the Triple Crown and Breeder’s Cup, and on Labor Day, when the All American Futurity is held. Kentucky Derby day is its largest crowd. The architectural style was patterned after the exhibition hall at the old fair grounds (where H-E-B now stands). It brought in lighting fixtures that were on early Main Street, and there are historic photos on display throughout the facility. The Race Barn opened for business in 2003. The facility is open Thursday through Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
