Hindu Charities for America Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt by: Rama Tiru

On June 1st, in a darkened hall full of people hushed in a silence of anticipation at BMBB 2014, a drum beat started softly and grew louder and louder to a crescendo while the MC Tasha Sharma announced the impressive line up of artists who were performing to support this event. Artists included those of Indian and Jewish Heritage such as Anuradha Naimpally, Singer Naga Valli and Oliver Rajamani, Monsoon Dance and Yesh Rikud performed Fusion Dances. Mazel Tov Kocktail Hour serenaded guests with Jewish folk music during a sumptuous Indian vegetarian dinner and delicious Jewish Desserts. The result was that $16000 was raised towards this worthy cause. HC4A is branching out to support many events in the Austin Area. Diwali is the largest of all Hindu festivals that is celebrated worldwide. Indians view Diwali as occasion for giving. With that in mind HC4A sponsored GivingFest 2013 last Diwali. The event featured a variety of Indian cultural performances, included the “Colors of India fashion show” and showcased a number of Indian businesses. The event, which was attended by more than 600 people, raised $20000 towards scholarships for Austin Area students seeking vocational training to enable them to develop valuable skills needed for future careers. HC4A founder Harish Kotecha presented the $20000 donation, one of the largest amounts raised by an Asian American Charity to representatives from Capital Idea, Austin Community College and Manor ISD. Austin Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole and City Council Member Mike Martinez attended the event, held on June 4th at Austin City Hall.

Founded in Austin, by Harish Kotecha, this organization has been serving the Austin Metro area and has donated school supplies to over 2100 students. Taking advantage of the cultural diversity of Austin, HC4A partnered with the Jewish Foundation of Greater Austin (JFGA) to creatively embrace both cultures with the “Bollywood meets Borscht Belt” event in 2013 to raise money to fund the school supply needs for children in Austin and Manor ISDs.

hen they hear the name Hindu Charities for America, most people assume that the organization is involved with charitable works in India or that it is a religious organization. However, Hindu Charities of America (HC4A) is founded on the principle “We give where we live!”. HC4A was founded in 2010 with the goal of creating a vehicle for Indian Communities across the United States to give back to the communities that have embraced them and provided opportunities for success.

orn in a Bangladeshi American family, an educator, and entrepreneur and a fund analyst. The founder of the khan academy that became a free online educational platform for many and is running as a nonprofit organization. He started it at a small office in his home and has produced more than 4,800 video lessons teaching a wide spectrum of academic subjects like that of mathematics and science. He was born in Metairie, Louisiana on October 11, 1976. His father was a Bangladeshi and his mother was born in Calcutta, India and he attended the citizenship of America because of being born there.

Personal life He is married to Umaima marvi who is a medical specialist in rheumatology and internal medicine and do have a son named Huzaifa Khan and a daughter named Manahil Khan and they live in Mountain View at California. His wife is a graduate from the same MIT while Mr. Khan was doing his MBA. They both met at Harvard while she was completing her medical education.

The idea of khan academy
His education was in the Massachusetts institute of technology, where he graduated in Bachelor of Science in subjects of mathematics and then he attended his bachelor’s in science in electrical engineering and computer sciences, then he did his masters in electrical engineering and computers sciences in the year 1998 and he even achieved the credit of being his class president in his senior years. He even holds a master degree in business administration from Harvard business school.
It was when Mr. Khan was teaching his cousin Nadia through the internet tools, he initially started posting his mathematics tutorials on the you tube in 2006 and that gave a tremendous response and attracted around millions of viewers, then it was in 2009 when he thought to quit his job and start his full time to promote the videos that later formed the khan academy. His popularity of the educational video on the video sharing web sites and the testimonial of appreciative students made him motivated to open his renowned academy. He later with

motivation from his wife and with his consultation opened the khan academy and focused on developing the You Tube channel to promote his educational videos with his friend Josh Gefner. He even received a sponsorship from Ann Doerr the wife of John Doerr, the ventured capitalist of America. He then outlined his mission to accelerate learning for students of all ages. With this mind set he shared the content with whomever he finds it useful. His plans also flew to extend his free school to cover the topics of English and he even plan to release the program that can teach the children in isolated areas of Africa and Asia. His slogan is “with so little effort on my own part, I can empower an unlimited amount of people for all time, I can’t imagine a better use of my time”. He published a book about khan academy and his goals to promote education and called it THE ONE WORLD SCHOOLHOUSE: EDUCATION REIMAGINED. He not only provided his help in education over internet but also promoted the usage of class rooms across the United States. To make the communication easier between the teacher and the student and to monitor the progress of the student by the teacher, he arranged the teacher

and student function in the year 2012.
Recognition The success of khan academy brought an attention to Mr. Khan who is the founder, for which his profile got a chance to be interviewed on television. His efforts to give education a new dimension in every one’s life have attracted funds from the major donors like the international brands of Google and Microsoft. Even it is a pride to say that the founder of Microsoft, Mr. Bill Gates has also started using the khan academy soft ware as a part to serve education for his children.
The Khan academy It is a non –profit educational website that was created in 2006 and its service are to provide a free world –class education for anyone, anywhere. This website features thousand of educational resources including a personalized leaning dashboard that will help solve over 100,000 exercise problems and over 5,000 micro lectures through video tutorials that are stored on the You Tube that teaches mathematics, history, health care, medicines, finance, physics, general chemistry, biology, astronomy, economics, cosmology, organic chemistry and
many more. As this is a nonprofit organization this have a significant backing from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Google and many more. Even in 2013, the Carlos Slim Foundation made a donation to Khan Academy to expand its Spanish. Khan Academy also has thousand of resources translated into other languages. It launched the Spanish version of the website in September 2013 and it is supported by partners and volunteers in language including Indonesian, German , Spanish, French , Norwegian ,polish , Portuguese, Russian , Turkish ,Greek, Urdu , Arabic , Persian , Bengali and Hindi. Not only are these there several other languages as well.
Technical format The khan academy started with khan remotely tutoring one of his cousins while interacting using Yahoo Doodle Images. With the encouragement from his friends and cousins he promoted better use of his time in transitioning to make the tutorials on the You Tube. The drawings are made with the help of the wacom tablet and the free natural drawing application smooth Draw and was recorded with screen capture software from Camtasia Studio. All the videos that are hosted through the You Tube are
available through the khan academy own website that contains many features like the progress tracking , practice exercise and other variety of tools for teachers in the public schools. This site can be logged in through the Google or a Face book account and even a separate account can be created through Khan Academy account as well.

It is always inspiring to hear eyewitness accounts from those who have visited Pratham sites and to learn that our efforts are making a real difference. Recently two Austin families visited Pratham’s programs in India, and shared their stories at a Pratham event.

Priyadarshan remarked on his experience, “They use innovative and effective methods. My family could relate to some of their techniques -similar to techniques used in schools here, but well-adapted to the native culture and language.”
Subhash and Nila Vohra Subhash and Nila Vohra visited Urban Learning Centers located in the Ahmedabad area of Gujarat. They showed videos of Pratham classes in action and reported on how Pratham has been able to break the communal barriers of fear and mistrust in a Muslim neighborhood where Hindus aren’t normally welcome. Bullying and our Community By: Marina Ong Bhargava
I
remember when my daughter Marisa came home from preschool many years ago and when I asked her how her day was, she said it was bad. When I asked her why, she explained that one of her friends made fun of her name, calling her “Marisa Ba-ga-ba-ga”. Bullying in school is prevalent but for Asian American students, the incidence of bullying is much higher. In a recent 2011 report by the Asian American Pacific Islander Nexus from a 2009 survey by the US Justice and Education Departments , 54% of Asian American teenagers said they experienced bullying in school compared with 31.3% of white, 38.4% of black and 34.3% of Hispanic students. Is bullying in school simply a normal rite of passage? How much attention should we be paying to this issue? Research has shown that people who are bullied have higher risk of depression and anxiety, increased thoughts of suicide, and health problems which persist into adulthood. They also have decreased academic achievement and are more likely to skip or drop out of school. At the extreme, they may retaliate with violence. There are negative consequences for the bullies too, not just the higher risk of getting into fights but also of alcohol and drug abuse, early sexual activity, criminal convictions and traffic citations as adults, and they are more like to be abusive to romantic partners, spouses and possibly their children later on. Even children who are neither bullies nor bullied may be affected

simply by witnessing bullying; they have an increased use of addictive substances, mental health issues and are more likely to miss school. What exactly is bullying? According to Dan Olweus (creator of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program), “A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly over time to negative actions on the part of one or more persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself”. Three components must exist; the behavior must be aggressive, be repeated and involves an imbalance of power or strength. The easiest form of bullying to identify is physical bullying. This can take the form of hitting, pinching, kicking, pushing or damaging valuables. But it can also be verbal; name-calling, teasing, insulting, gossiping. Or it can be emotional; social exclusion (not inviting someone to a birthday party that everyone else is invited to), using guilt (if you are my friend, you cannot be friends with so-and-so), demeaning someone (racial or sexual slurs). Finally, in this digital age cyber bullying is on the rise and most alarming for our community is that 62% of Asian American students report being bullied online up to twice a month, compared to just 18.1% of white students. If so many of our children are being affected and the negative consequences are serious and long lasting, then we as a community need to be aware and take this issue seriously.
Steps to be taken in this situation 1. Encourage open communication with children. If they discuss bullying, stay calm, listen actively, do not blame the child, and learn as much about the situation. 2. Teach children how to respond by giving them tools that empower them. They can say “I want you to stop now,” and walk away. Practice doing this at home. Suggest sticking with friends and remind them that they can ask teachers or other adults for help. 3. T
he costumes are dazzling, the music is blaring and the energy is soaring. Twenty college students fill the stage, dancing to remixes of the latest Bollywood hits, old throwbacks, and the newest hip-hop songs. This is Texas Nach Baliye, hailing from the University of Texas at Austin, bringing the latest interpretation of Bollywood dancing to the stage. Texas Nach Baliye is the premier nationally competing co-ed BollywoodFusion Dance Team at The University of Texas. The team was founded in 2008 by a group of college students, led by Kovid Gupta, who recognized the unfilled niche of co-ed Bollywood dancing in Texas. At the time, they simply wanted to perform at a local talent show, UT Indian Cultural Association’s Jhalak. However, after Jhalak, the team received several calls encouraging them to delve into the national South Asian dance arena. In Fall 2009, Nach Baliye became a registered student organization that aimed to represent the University of Texas in national competitions of the highest caliber. Texas Nach Baliye competes in the premiere, collegiate BollywoodFusion dance circuit. Bollywood fusion developed as Indian-American students across the country mixed both the Indian and American cultural elements that they grew up with. The style incorporates Hindi film dancing, hip-hop, Bhangra, classical styles such as Bharatanatyam and Kuchupuri, and contemporary to create diverse routines. The circuit ranges across the country, and has become a huge network for students who are interested in dance and Indian culture and performance. As a part of this elite circuit, Texas Nach Baliye competes at Bollywood America “bid” competitions, held all over the nation. These competitions, sponsored by DesiDanceTeams.com (DDT), pit the
best dance teams from each region against each other. There are 10 such nationwide “bid” competitions, the winners of which comprise the nation’s Top 10 collegiate dance teams. These ten teams are given the honor of performing at the prestigious “Bollywood America” competition and vying for the top title in the nation. Nach Baliye has been increasingly successful over the past few years, and has had the privilege of competing both in the Bollywood scene but also in front of other crowds. They were the 2014 winners of Texas Revue, UT’s biggest talent show, as well as competitors in the World of Dance, one of the largest hiphop competitions in the country. It was a chance to represent Indian culture in a scene with the biggest hip-hop names in the country. They also made a mark nationally, securing multiple Runner-up positions at Bollywood America “bid” competitions at Georgia Tech, Penn State, and the University of Cincinnati. While the essence of Nach Baliye is dance, we strive to put on a wholesome and entertaining show for the audience. Our team’s unique selling point is its intricate choreography, executed with the unbridled energy of its 20+ members. In our routines, performed both nationally and locally, we also aim to entertain members of the audience with stunts, gimmicks, dialogues, and comedy intertwined into a product that resembles a Broadway production. ox Office set to Receive a “Kick” from Salman Khan Salman Khan’s upcoming film Kick is set to hit the theatres July 27, 2014. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala will be debuting as a director with this action packed comedy thriller. The established producer and first time director is quite confident in his abilities stating “This film is going to be different. It is completely different from Salman’s earlier films. I will add my style and touch to it”. His confidence is not misplaced, each time the producer has worked with Salman Khan, their films such as Jeet, Judwaa, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi have proved to be highly successful at the box office. Kick is a remake of the
blockbuster 2009 Telegu film of the same name which earned a net 30 crores (300 000 000 INR) at the box office. Film pundits are expecting the Bollywood release of Kick to likewise do extremely well and break records. The current trend in Bollywood with big name films is to schedule release dates according to holidays and festivals. Kick is no exception, the film starring Salman Khan will be released on the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid and is expected to cash in on the celebrations. Salman Khan has always considered Eid to be a lucky period for him at the box office. With Shahrukh Khan’s upcoming film Happy New Year set to release in October during Diwali, the actor will not be facing any serious competition at the

The film will feature former model and Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez alongside Salman Khan who beat out competition Dipika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha who were also considered to play the lead opposite Salman Khan. «It will definitely be a dream come true to work with someone like Salman Khan because he is the biggest thing right now in Bollywood,» said the 27-year-old former Miss Sri Lanka. The cast also includes Randeep Hooda, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The plot which revolves around several high value robberies targeting the elite society allows for intense action sequences performed by not one, not two, but four of Salman’s body doubles! Each of the four body doubles specialize in different action stunts. The film will include several deadly stunts that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats, be prepared to be thoroughly entertained! While watching the film, the audience will witness a thrilling high-speed chase between Salman Khan and Randeep Hooda. What few will know however is that Ajay, the body double who kicked off the scene for Salman Khan actually landed himself in the hospital with serious facial injuries. Director Sajid Nadiadwala had rented a row house near a railway track. The scene required Ajay to jump from the first floor of the house on to the railway track, after which Salman Khan would resume his character’s role and jump on to a moving train close on the heels of Randeep Hooda’s cop character. As planned, Ajay crashed through a sheet of sugar glass which is a brittle transparent form of sugar used as a glass replacement, however the timing went wrong and many broken pieces of the sugar glass pierced into his face. The stunt man was rushed to the hospital by Salman and Sajid immediately and did not return to shoot the film. The scene was then completed by another body double. In addition to the gravity-defying stunts, viewers will also witness Salman Khan sporting a look previously not seen

before. The actor is well known to adopt different looks to best represent his character from the curtain hairstyle in Tere Naam to the fake moustache and staple aviators in Dabangg. However, viewers will not be seeing a pasteup job this time. The actor decided to grow out his real whiskers for Kick and was first seen sporting a moustache at the premiere of his last film, Jai Ho, in Dubai. Following his visit, he was recently spotted in Mumbai with a full goatee. Salman will be flaunting his new look for approximately 40 minute in the film during a crucial sequence. Director Sajid Nadiadwala is thrilled with the new look and how Salman has represented his character outwardly, yet he was reluctant to share further details, simply stating «Yes, bhai’s new look is for my film Kick. That’s all I can say for now.” With the success of Dabangg 2 which earned the title of the third highest-grossing Bollywood production ever, followed by the underwhelming performance of Jai Ho at the box office, Salman holds high hopes for Kick. Salman Khan’s fans are in a frenzy awaiting the release of the film. Sajid Nadiadwala has been flooded with requests to release the official poster of the film. In fact, he has begun to receive Kick posters created by fans who are having a difficult time carrying out the wait. alman has always been into painting, he has been a talented artist right from childhood. It is a trait that he has got from his mother Salma, who herself is an accomplished artist,” says Salman’s father Salim. Father Salim’s
favorite painting is an abstract piece which depicts individuals of different religious communities. As every good artist Salman Khan continues to hone his painting skills, he has begun taking lessons with painting coach and talented artist Nilesh Vede.
Bollywood Salman’s paintings often reveal individuals of different religions, but ultimately carry a theme of spirituality and unity depicting God as one. His portraits have a tendency to portray tranquil and meditative expressions. Salman has painted several portraits of his close friends in the industry and gifted them, one of which was of Aamir Khan in his Ghajini avatar of Sanjay Singhani. During his television show Dus Ka Dum, Salman also gifted guest contestant Ranbir Kapoor who attended the show with co-actors Deepika Padeukone and Manisha Lamba , a portrait of his late grandfather Raj Kapoor. Salman Khan’s paintings decorate the walls of many celebrity homes including those of Boney Kapoor and Sridevi. Though initially a well-kept secret, Salman is no longer reluctant to speak about his paintings. Perhaps his confidence in his abilities has grown or he has come to realize it would be a shame to hide such promising talent. You may be surprised to hear that the poster created for Salman’s film Jai Ho, released in January 2014 was in fact a Salman Khan creation! The digital poster was produced from his painting, and the movie title Jai Ho is written in Salman’s handwriting. The poster was first revealed online with a tweet from Salman Khan, the actor tweeted, “Maine paint kiya, aapne click kiya and Friday ko we made the poster”. Salman Khan put in great thought into his painting, incorporating stick figures standing next to each other representing the masses, the “aam admi”, and the strength of community. This concept reflects the fundamental message of the movie: do good deeds, help others to better society, and in
return you will also benefit. How much do Salman Khan’s paintings sell for? Get ready to pick your jaw up off the floor. One of his paintings has sold for one crore (10 million INR)! The painting which was one of Salman Khan`s favorites, represented the emotional relationship between a mother and son. Despite being a famous celebrity and Bollywood star, this success as an artist did not come immediately for Salman. The painting had been previously submitted at an auction intended to raise funds for several NGOs, however, the highest bid it was receiving was 20 lakhs (2 000 000 INR), prompting Salman Khan to make the decision to withdraw the painting from the auction at the time, clearly this was a good decision! Salman Khan chose to invest his earnings from the painting into his non-profit foundation which focuses on education and health empowerment and aid in India, Being Human. Salman`s father, Salim Khan stated “I know for sure that the amount has gone to the Salman Khan Foundation and it will benefit the needy that the foundation supports.”

Until at one point, an anti-social activity in the heart of Mumbai city gets him involved into something huge. Virat Bakshibeing a patriot and a special agent in the Indian Army, is dragged into a huge network of terrorism. The rest of the story is about him fighting against the wittiest of Terror head, and how he swipes out the city of Mumbai from Sleeper cells. The film ends with a dedication to the Indian Army.

DON’T HAVE IT AS GOOD AS THEY COULD In a family, often one person shines and becomes super famous, while his or her siblings live in the shadow. Some revel in their relative anonymity, but most find it difficult to find their own groove and may harbour feelings of resentment, guilt and lack of confidence. Many siblings work with their famous brother or sister in some capacity of the other and so they lead a comfortable life, but nothing like that of the better known sibling. It is not necessary that all siblings can achieve success as their famous brothers or sisters, but sibling rivalry is a known psychological phenomenon. It was way back in 1941 that renowned psychologist, David Adler, coined the term sibling rivalry and modern day research studies have confirmed that sibling rivalry often plays an important role in behavior patterns of adults. Even if both siblings are successful they may have a turbulent relationship and may always try to outdo each other. Professor Kevin Browne, a forensic psychologist at the University of Nottingham, says that sibling rivalry has its roots in childhood but ‘when parents are elderly and the children are adult, they are no longer so concerned with gaining affection. Instead they vie for material things such as property and money and often go to extraordinary lengths to make sure they are getting their fair share.’ And if it is not real property it can be fame, money and success and not necessarily the legacy left by parents.

ACTOR HRITHIK ROSHAN SHOCKS FANS BY DIVORCING FROM WIFE SUZANNE They seemed like a match made in heaven when they tied the knot several years ago, but sadly the perfect fairytale marriage between Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan and wife Suzanne has now come to an end. The couple share two children, both of whom are below ten years of age and who are now going to be residing with their mother post the break up. Indeed this is a piece of news that has taken the glamour world by storm and numerous glitterati in Bombay have expressed disbelief upon hearing the news. News of friction between Hrithik and Suzanne has been doing the rounds of the gossip circles for quite some time now. It gapes at India like a friendly tourist, carts home its two souvenirs and then, in its awkward way, tries to find common ground between East and West. Dinesh and Rinku may have hoped to find independence in America, but instead they’ve landed in a Disney family film -- and they’re the children. Fascinated by elevators and romping through fancy hotels like a couple of Curious Georges, they’re referred to as “kids,” or treated as such, by everyone in the movie. Meanwhile, Bernstein plays the neglectful dad, leaving his charges to struggle through school
(Bill Paxton plays pitching coach Tom House) while he’s off courting the blinged-out football star Popo Vanuatu (Rey Maualuga, of the Cincinnati Bengals). “They just need to see that you care,” says Bernstein’s casual girlfriend, Brenda. After Slumdog, she was offered some Hindi films, but was choosy about them and besides, Hollywood beckoned. However, Bollywood has always been at the back of her mind and it seems that she is now ready to sign her first Hindi film, tentatively titled NH10, where she is to play the main protagonist, a detective. She is in talks with Vikramditya Motwane for this film and has approved the script, penned by Navdeep Singh of Manorama Six Feet Under but has yet to sign on the dotted line. While Navdeep was supposed to direct the film, she wants Motwane to do it instead. laichi is a spice used in Arabic, South Asian and even Chinese traditions to add a sweet aromatic flavor to desserts, chai, curries and rice dishes. In both Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used to treat digestion and oral health issues. Elaichi essential oil has also been found to have good antibacterial properties, and it has been used in some chewing gums to neutralize breath odors. The most common variety of elaichi is a light green fruit pod that contains black seeds. It is native to India, Pakistan and Guatemala. There are also brown and dark brown varieties found in Sri Lanka that are often used in making gharam masala . One tablespoon of ground elaichi contains only 18 Calories but up to 4 per cent of the daily recommended value for iron and up to 6 per cent of the daily value for fiber. Elaichi also has some magnesium , calcium and vitamin C.
Things to do with Cardamom (Elaichi) 1. Boil the whole pods with your tea, coffee or just hot water to create an aromatic hot drink with or without additional masala for a delicious treat. 2. Sprinkle ground seeds into porridge, kheer, cakes or any other dessert dish to add aroma. You may be able to reduce the amount of sugar in your recipe by a teaspoon or two, without losing flavor. 3. Chew the whole pod. Next time you are looking for a sweet or candy to freshen your breath, consider chewing on a whole elaichi instead.
Pro Tip For recipes requiring whole cardamom pods, a generally accepted equivalent is 10 pods equals 1½ teaspoons of ground cardamom. As ground seeds lose their flavor quickly, it is best to buy whole pods and grind the seeds, just before they need to be added to your favorite dish.

t is disturbing to see so many teenage girls and even women in their 20s fall prey to the twisted concept society has in regard to beauty. In fact, even a lot of young men are influenced too. While being physically attractive is every person’s dream, why do so at the cost of your own health? Firstly, eating disorders is more common than we think. You have girls sticking fingers and throwing up just so they won’t pack on the pounds, and aim to get gaps between the thighs and hip bones to jut out. This is not what an ideal healthy person should look like. Anorexia is a disorder and not a goal. Also according to statistics, the anorexia death rate is 12 times higher for teens. There are many therapies that help with this disorder, but as per recent research and examples, yoga can help tremendously to combat the issue at both physical and mental levels. So how does yoga actually help?
Don’t Panic
Accepting Yourself
if you have ever experienced any of these eating disorders or even cheated on a diet with a rather heavy meal, you will know what the after effects are. Panic, guilt, self-hatred, and then the remedy- throwing up, or a pre-meal panic, what if you chomp down on this slice of cake, you will put on weight, you won’t fit into you size zero clothes anymore and then people at school will tease, call names, laugh at you. There’s always a sense of panic over what if you don’t get accepted as per society’s rule for physical beauty. This is where yoga comes in and helps to relax the mind and dissolves this feeling unless it all but dissipates.
When you are at peace with everything around you and everything inside you, you accept yourself the way you are. In fact you come to love your body and flaws. A quick example is when you are craving for a pie or something sugary, your body is trying to say that there is a deficiency of essential nutrients and that it needs fuel. Next time when you get a craving, try having a bowl of fruit salad first, and see if you still feel the craving. In short, yoga grounds the eating disorder triggers and pushes the mind to choose a healthier alternative.

Surimi Fish Ball Indian cooking is kind of like cooking medicine for the soul and body! Indian food is healthy. Many of the spices in Indian cuisine have medicinal value. Complex flavor combinations is what curry is all about. You can serve a curry as spicy as you wish it to be. A ramekin of hot chile pepper sauce served on the side is a good idea if some of the guests prefer very spicy food. Kari means curry leaf. Curry leaf is in most Indian masala curry spice mixes. The British started calling Indian style masala by the name curry during their occupation of India. In India, curry spiced food is called masala. Curry in India refers to curry leaves and not a spice mix. There are many different definitions of the word masala in the Indian food language. Masala usually means “the basis of, or the start of.� Indian chefs realized that the word curry was easily recognized by western customers, so curry is offered as standard entree on Indian menus of the western world. If you go to India and ask for curry, then you will be offered curry

leaves. Curry leaves are black neem tree leaves. In some Indian kitchens, there may be 40 to 60 small bowls filled with spices, coconut milk, ginger, garlic, lemon, yogurt, goats milk, bean pastes, curry powders, curry pastes, yam pastes, chile pastes, chutneys, oils, ghee and salt. The Indian chef uses spoons to add multiple seasoning combinations from the small bowls to the recipes being cooked. Some dishes are plain, but some dishes can have over thirty seasonings! Complex seasoned food and regimented cooking techniques is the marquis of Indian cuisine. I used pre-made frozen surimi style fish balls for this recipe. Pre-made fish balls are available in Asian and Indian markets. Homemade fish balls are fairly easy to make, if you wish to make your own. The chutney must be made a few days ahead of time, so the flavors have time to meld. Home made chutneys are the best! Pre-made chutneys from Indian markets are of nice quality too.
Health SURIMI FISH BALL RECIPE This recipe makes 1 large serving of curry! -Cook 1 cup of plain brown rice ahead of time and keep it warm. -Heat a sauce pot over medium high heat. -Add 4 cups of water. -Add 3/4 cup of finely chopped onion. -Add 6 chopped garlic cloves. -Boil the onion and garlic mixture, till it becomes very mushy. (The broth will reduce to about 1 1/2 cups, by the time the onions and garlic become very soft. This is the base or masala of the curry!) -Reduce the temperature to medium low heat. -Add 1 teaspoon of ginger paste. -Add 1 sliced small green jalapeno pepper. -Add 1 finely minced seeded green jalapeno pepper. -Add 1 1/2 tablespoons of garam masala. -Add 1 tablespoon of cilantro paste or cilantro puree. -Add 2 pinches of turmeric. -Add 3 pinches of cumin. -Add 2 pinches of coriander. -Add sea salt and black pepper. -Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. -Add 1/2 cup of shrimp broth. -Add 1/3 cup each of these sliced vegetables: - onion - green bell pepper - red bell pepper - celery - bok choy or cabbage - green onion - carrots CUCUMBER SALAD RECIPE: -Add 10 to 12 pre-made frozen surimi fish balls. (Premade fish balls are available in Chinese or Indian -Peel and seed 1 small cucumber. markets. Surimi fish balls are made the same way -Cut the cucumber into thin slices and place them that imitation crab meat is made. They are actually in a mixing bowl. another form of surimi.) -Add 1/2 of a thin sliced green onion. -Simmer the curry for 5 minutes. -Add 1/2 tablespoon of soy sauce. -Reduce the temperature to low heat. -Add 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar. -Add 1/2 cup of coconut milk while stirring. -Add 1/4 teaspoon of sesame oil -Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. -Simmer the curry gently for 2 minutes.
-Add sea salt and white pepper. -Add 1 pinch of dill weed. CONDIMENT PLATTER -Toss the ingredients together refrigerate and till the flavors meld. Use another platter for the bread and condiments. -Serve the cucumber salad within 2 hours, or theServe with a ramekin of Spicy Mango Chundo. (Spicy cucumbers will become mushy! Mango Chundo is available pre-made in a jar at Indian markets.) Serve with a ramekin of Korean Red Serrano Chili Sauce. (Available in grocery stores and asian markets.) Crack some thin Masala Khakhara bread in half and Use a ring mold to place place it on the condiment platter. (Masala Khakhara is some of the cooked plain available as a pre-made mix or fully prepared in Indian brown rice on a platter. Markets.) IPL Winner 2014: Kolkata Knight Riders Prove India Still Rules T20 Cricket Saturday saw the final of the 2014 IPL season, and when the dust had settled, Kolkata Knight Riders (200/7) celebrated their second title in three seasons with a three-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab (199/4). Both sides had their heroes after the match, with Wriddhiman Saha putting together a record-breaking performance for the losing team, as shared by Freddie Wilde: His 115 runs from 55 balls were beyond impressive, but in the end, Kolkata were just too strong, greatly aided by 94 from 50 from Manish Pandey. Youngster Akshar Patel stole the show bowling for Punjab, completing four overs with just 21 runs allowed. Manan Vohra scored 67 runs from 52 balls, combining with Saha to set a target of 200. Yusuf Pathan and Gautam Gambir aided greatly in the middle overs of Kolkata’s innings, and the final four came off Piyush Chawla’s bat, sending his teammates into a frenzy as they celebrated their IPL 7 title. All of those players were responsible for giving the fans one of the most exciting IPL finals we’ve ever seen. All are Indian. What did Punjab’s trio of lauded international players Glenn Maxwell, David Miller and George Bailey add? Three runs or Kolkata’s dangerous bowling duo of Morne Morkel and Sunil Narine? Eight overs, 86 runs. One wicket. The 2014 IPL saw numerous great performances from international players, and no team rode its foreign stars more than Punjab. Narine will end the season with the second-most wickets taken and the fourth-best economy rate, but he failed to take a single wicket in the play-offs and gave up 76 runs in eight overs. International players make the IPL fun. Colorful figures like Kieron Pollard draw fans to the stadiums, and as shared by Punjab’s official Twitter account, Maxwell was voted as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player: Punjab built their squad around their three international stars, while teams like Mumbai Indians have relied heavily on international players like Pollard, Lasith Malinga and Corey Anderson. All these overseas players have one thing in common: They didn’t impact the IPL final like the domestic players did. The fans and commentators felt it too. Kolkata’s chase seemed to come under serious pressure twice: the dismissals of Robin Uthappa and Pathan. People hardly batted an eye when they lost Ryan ten Doeschate or Shakib Al Hasan. Unlike Punjab or Mumbai, Kolkata built their team around strong, domestic talent, and it paid off in the end. The win seemed very much in doubt when their international spin bowlers couldn’t live up to their lofty standards, but good, old-fashioned power-hitting saved the day. India may have lost the T20 World Cup final to an in-form Sri Lanka team, but make no mistake about it: India still very much rules the short form of the sport.

Popular Internet Scams You Should be Aware Of The internet is certainly full of opportunities with millions of people earning part or all of their income from it. However, for every success story there is usually a scam that fools even more people and takes their money. Understanding what is a scam and what is a legitimate offer is crucial to knowing whether to proceed when you see a new advertisement on the web. What follows are the five most popular internet scams. Even though awareness of these scams has grown tremendously over the past decade, they still rip people out of millions of dollars annually.

The Wealthy Nigerian Family
Easily one of the oldest and most recognized scams, the “Wealthy Nigerian Family” scam is perhaps the king of all internet rip-offs as it has fooled so many people over the years and is very widely known, yet is still being used today. The scam is a very simple one. You get an email from a member of a “wealthy Nigerian family” who needs to get a large amount of money out of their country immediately. They transfer the money into your bank account and all you need to do is pay a few processing fees to start the process. Naturally, you’ll never see any of the money while the “fees” go to line the scammer’s pocket.

The Lottery Swindle
This is another “oldie, but a goodie” in that lottery swindles of this nature date back to well before the internet. Basically, you receive an email that congratulates you on winning a huge amount of money, often several

million dollars, from an overseas lottery you’ve probably never heard of before. All you need to do is pay the processing fees, which usually consist of several thousands dollars to claim the money. First, you cannot win a lottery that you did not enter and second, any “processing” fees from a legitimate lottery are deducted from your winnings, so you pay nothing. Yet people still get swindled from this form of scam every year.

The Up-Front Credit Card Fee
Credit card applications come in the snail mail and email with regularity. But this one is generally loaded with eye-catching promises such as being able to access large amounts of money on pre-approved loans. However, there is an up-front fee for getting the credit card. No legitimate bank or lending institution offers an up-front fee. Plus, there is no such thing as a pre-approved loan, especially one where they have not examined your credit. This is a very popular scam that takes in thousands of people
every year who pay the up-front fee and never see anything else.

This is arguably the most popular internet scam of them all, although the effectiveness is not quite as high as the top three. Basically, you get a very legitimate looking email from a credit card company that tries to lure you into revealing your password or other pertinent information so they can rob your credit card account blind. Remember than no legitimate company would ever send such an email, so beware.
This ugly internet scam is designed to take advantage of your good nature. Every time a major disaster strikes, such as Hurricane Katrina for example, an email is sent out asking for online donations to charities that you’ve probably never heard of. That’s because they don’t exist. Resist donating any money until you have completely checked out the organization yourself.
