Stone Oak Safety In recent weeks, several vehicle break-ins have occurred throughout the Stone Oak area, including the Stone Oak Park parking area. Your Stone Oak SAPD SAFFE Officers, Gerardo Hernandez (Gerardo.Hernandez@sanantonio.gov) and Dennis Quinn (Dennis.Quinn@sanantonio.gov) would like to remind you as you enjoy your summer vacation, please take the extra moment to REMOVE your valuables from your vehicle, and LOCK IT. An open vehicle – or visible valuables – are open invitations. A quick run into the drug store, a day at the pool, a walk in the park, or even in front of your own home…don’t take the chance. If it is valuable, take it with you or leave it at home. And always lock your vehicle. And, as a friendly reminder, summer in Texas means extra-hot cars. Please don’t leave your pet in your vehicle. Even with windows cracked, temperatures become too high for them to survive. And after all, they are one of your most precious valuables!

Safety First

Tips To Protect Your Home Don’t Advertise That You’re Away • Make sure your answering machine message says that you cannot reach the phone, and not that you are away from home. • Have your mail delivered to a temporary P.O. Box if you’re going to be gone for a long period. • Before traveling, stop newspaper/delivery services. • If possible, keep your lights on. Give the appearance that someone is home. • Maintain your lawn and alley; it reduces the amount of cover a potential burglar may use.

Secure Your Home and Belongings • Invest in reliable locks and security systems. • Keep a record of your valuables and keep them hidden and secure. • Install a 190-degree door viewer or door scope on your front door. Always look before you open the door. • Make sure all windows are covered and that all windows and doors are locked before leaving the house. • Put bells on your gate and front door so you know when someone is entering. • Take time to sit out on your front porch so people know you are observing your block.

Know Your Neighbors • Have neighbors keep an eye out and report suspicious activity. • If you suspect someone is in your home, get out immediately and go to a neighbor’s house. Call 9-1-1! • Get to know your neighbors by organizing an annual National Night Out event for your block. (Continued on page 3)

Tips To Protect Your Car Secure Your Vehicle • Lock your car and roll up the windows. • If you are running errands and have valuables in your car, carry them with you or hide them before reaching your next destination. • Keep all money, purses, wallets, valuables and electronics (including chargers) out of plain view, even while parked in front of your home or in the driveway. • Invest in anti-theft devices for your car.

Avoid Danger • Park in well-lit areas and as close to the door as possible. • Learn your neighborhood. • If you feel you are being followed, DO NOT GO HOME. Go somewhere safe, such as a gas station or other open businesses, a police sub-station or fire station. Call 9-1-1 immediately! Looking Good! We are entering the hot, dry time of the year, but, unfortunately, rainfall for May and June was well over historic averages. Of course, we are not “out of the woods” yet. Four years of drought requires the same amount or more of “normal” rainfall to restore vegetation and springs to a natural state. To make the best use of our water and your pocketbook, SAWS Conservation is offering $100 coupons to homeowners who remove at least 200 square feet of lawn. The coupons come in two forms: a Landscape Coupon and a Patioscape Coupon. The Patioscape coupon offers the possibility of a $200 coupon if you have an in-ground system under the area where you plan to install the stone or pavers. There is a limit to 2 coupons per household per each time the program is offered. In other words, during each program period, you may apply for 2 coupons and, yes, we offer these programs multiple times a year. The process to obtain a coupon is quite easy: • Take the grass out by digging it up, covering it up, or spraying it up. • Apply for the coupon on-line or print the application and mail it in. • Go shopping at the approved participating vendors. • Plant or install the required materials. All the pertinent information can be found at www.saws.org/conservation And speaking of pertinent information.... visit our brand new, interactive website www. gardenstyleSA.com, where the homeowner can browse for plants, up-to-date landscape information, and designs that save water and provide a beautiful landscape. Finally, don’t forget about our free conservation consultation service where our experienced, intelligent consultants come to your home, run your irrigation system, and offer ideas to save you water and money. Call us at 704-SAVE (7283) to make an appointment. Welcome to South Texas summers! Let us make it more enjoyable for you and less stressful on your pocketbook. Mark A. Beyond Cool: How Ceiling Fans Offer Energy Efficiency, Decor and Function (BPT) - Savvy interior designers know that items that are both fashionable and functional are in high demand. One of the best examples of a stylish, hardworking home fixture is also one of the most overlooked: the ceiling fan. In 2014, more homeowners are realizing the potential this classic technology has not only on their comfort levels, but also on their interior’s design aesthetic.

It’s no surprise that approximately 82 percent of American single-family homes have at least one ceiling fan to help keep cool in the summer. Invented by the Memphis-based Hunter Fan Company in 1886, ceiling fans are a multi-

functional and aesthetically appealing addition to any space. But many homeowners are unaware of how installing a ceiling fan can save money while improving comfort and home design. In addition to customizable features and finishes available on ceiling fans today, homeowners who install ceiling fans enjoy: • 45 percent energy savings. An average home uses some form of cooling system heavily for about 125 days out of the year. At eight hours a day for 125 days, central air in these homes costs roughly $207 a year. Using a ceiling fan under the same cooling conditions costs

only $111. And, on average, you’ll feel eight degrees cooler using a ceiling fan instead of just AC alone. Many fans now come with LED light kit options as well. • Variety of designs. With a little research, it’s possible to find a design suited for every room and decor, from traditional to industrial to modern. There are companies that offer custom design options, and companies like Casablanca provide the consumer with more than 8 million unique combinations so they can perfectly match their fan to their interior design style. • Easy install. Most fans are easy to install with a few quick steps or can be installed by an electrician. Some fans even install in as little as five minutes.

Call Now for your Air Conditioning Tune-up...

• Scalable systems. Fan size matters; the wrong size can have an impact on both your comfort and cooling efficiency. Fans are measured by their diameter, with the most common size sold being 52 inches. In a small room, a 36-inch fan may be fine, but bedrooms and living rooms sometimes need 54-inch or larger models. Got a long room? You may need more than one fan to keep air flowing. • Simple maintenance. With dust-resistant technology, maintaining the performance of ceiling fans has never been easier. Use a soft cloth or brush to clean the blades and motor housing, and remember to remove the light globe to clean by hand. Finally, use a vacuum to remove dust from the vent to keep it running at its best.
