Getting The Most Out of Your Marketing Strategy
If I had executed the first draft of the marketing plan that
I wrote for my business, I would have now been broke. My first draft included online advertising through Facebook, Google and Twitter as well as other expensive forms of advertising. These might all sound like reasonable marketing expenditures for a corporate marketing team, but probably not for a starting entrepreneur who is funding her own venture. I don’t want to advocate for stinginess, but I do think that marketing frugality is a By Avivit Fisher Marketing Strategist virtue for a small business start-up. Your starting point should be strategy, not execution. That means that you really need to spend time thinking about your “what, why and who.” The “What” is your business; what you are selling or what kind of service you are providing. The “Why” is the reason your business or service matters and the “Who” represents your ideal customer. Answering these questions will serve as a foundation for your marketing strategy. The next step would be how you want to represent yourself in the market. That is your brand. Developing a brand is not a hip thing to do, it is the necessary thing to do for a solid marketing plan and a sustainable business model. One of my clients experienced an aggressive growth in business after she decided to hone her brand message. She is a wedding photographer, who was successful in Washington DC, but upon moving to New York City she struggled with securing clients and could not understand why. The way she conducted her business was exactly the same as in the DC market yet nothing was happening. After auditing her brand and her competition, we discovered that her message was not clear for the audience she targeted, the prices were too low and the look was too conservative. My client was able to go from zero to twenty two bookings the first year in the New York City market. Despite that, having a well-defined brand is not going to do much for you if you don’t have a marketing strategy and a plan. This brings us back to my initial point. Even if you are completely new in business and need to build your reputation, you don’t need a huge budget to do that. You can develop tactics that include: blogging and email marketing, strong social media presence, networking within groups that support your business goals and public speaking for your “Who” in the audience. Test and see what works for you, and adjust your tactics as you go. So this is the advice I want to conclude with; invest in strategy rather than tactics. When you know how to represent your business and whom to target, you can find budget friendly ways to do that. Avivit Fisher / Marketing Strategist 646-745-7209/ avivit@reddstrategy.com
Cheese Pairing Guide: Chardonnay:
It goes very well with creamy cheeses with a soft rind. Brie and Camembert would be a good example. These cheeses are spreadable so you can pair them with bread, crackers and some dried apricots. Another key element in cheese and wine pairing is fruit. Your cheese platter will not only look prettier but will also give you and your guests tasting and combination options. Try melon, berries or sun dried tomatoes depending on you mood and you are good to go.
Merlot, Cabernet, Malbec, Chianti or Zinfindale: Bring out the semi-hard cheeses such
as: Gouda, Cheddar or Parmesan. Add some grapes, spicy nuts and/or meats to your cheese platter and your set!
Sweet, off-dry or fortified wines: Go with BLUE. The saltiness and nutty flavors in cheeses like Gorgonzola or Blue cheese play well with sweet wine. Add fruit or almonds to balance the saltiness. Pinot Grigio: It pairs well with mascarpone and ricotta which are super yummy when spread with a little honey or fig spread on a cracker!

What is Lady Savant, The Little Black Book of Talented Women & Businesses?
Our “Little Black Book” is full of trail blazing women and local businesses who share their winning mentalities as well as tips and tricks to your everyday needs. We call them Lady Savant’s! In the Summer of 2013 we decided to embark on the journey of bringing all of these women to one single local platform. As moms, we were home with our kids: sometimes loving it and sometimes wondering what to do with all of our “other” skills and passions. To our surprise, we weren’t the only women out there wondering this. Through networking and our monthly “Savanting” events, we’ve met some of the most down to earth, talented and interesting ladies and businesses out there. Our "Savanting" events can be anything from a cooking lesson at a local bakery, a painting class at a restaurant, a feng shui class at a spa, etc. They are all about learning something new, making new friends and exploring different local venues. Go ahead, get inspired and keep your book handy for when you might need them! If you are a woman or business who should be part of our “Little Black Book” or know someone who should, we want to hear from you! Email us at info@ladysavant.com. Why should I feed my baby organic food? Pesticides are toxic and kill living organisms. Organic foods are produced without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, growth hormones, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Babies eat more food relative to their body weight than adults, making there little bodies more susceptible to the potential dangers of pesticides. According to a recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics Study, "Children encounter pesticides daily and have unique susceptibilities to their potential toxicity.

There are usually only two things between a woman and her dreams: courage and little bit of knowledge”-SW
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I was raised in a culture that didn’t give women as many choices as I would have liked, and after leaving that culture, I have slowly and surely made it my mission to make sure I help women of all walks of life find their own “Better Ways”.
As founder of a BetterWayMoms.com and a business consultant for women, what are some of the biggest challenges you see in starting your own business or blog? The hardest part about starting a business is understanding what to do first. You may know you have a talent, or an idea, but you have no idea how to turn that into a true money making business. I love sitting down with women and going over what they love, why they love it, and creating a business plan around it. Its’ so exciting to see the dream turn into a reality, and the joy on women’s faces when they see its’ possible is positively thriling. The other hard part is always marketing and PR.To truly be successful at getting out there, I feel its’ important to spend at least an hour a day on PR and marketing and tooting my own horn can feel weird sometimes! sarah@betterwaymoms.com

How did you end up in the tile industry? I grew up helping my mom with her retail interior design business. Then, I sort of fell into the tile industry while working on my graduate degree in psychology. I started working in wholesale and fell in love with the tiles. What advice do you have for women that want to start their own business in a male dominated industry? Go for it! If you have a passion,do what you love and make a lot of connections. Tile Circle is a specialty tile manufacturer founded by tile designers who saw the void in the ability to easily find extraordinarily high-end, floor and wall tile at a reasonable price. kelly@tilecircle.com www.TileCircle.com My passion is designing tile so I'm doing that every chance I get! 212.920.4601

I had a young family and lifestyle I enjoyed and that weighed heavy on my mind and the pressure to succeed. At some point in the process, I realized just like people hired me to help them with reaching their fitness goals, I needed to find someone to help me reach my business goals. But before I could do that, I had to make a decision, and I had to pick ONE job. So I did and never looked back. With the right guidance, support, and accountability any goal is attainable.

Prepared Food Company local ingredients, sustainable practice... meals made with love! meredith@bellamykitchen.com www.bellamykitchen.com 914-886-5449
What inspired you to begin A prepared meal company?
As a child, I was always welcomed into the kitchen. My love of cooking began very young. However, after college, I taught elementary school for ten years. During this time, I continued to cook and add to my vast repertoire. In the winter of 2012, a dear friend gave me an opportunity that changed my career path. Pastry Chef Nicole Juliano Peranick asked me to create the savory portion of a "Sweet and Savory Soiree" planned for a client. That was my “AHA!” moment. I’m incredibly grateful for Nikki's help.
What kind of services do you offer?
We’re a prepared meal company that focuses on local ingredients & sustainable practices. We allow you to serve your family healthy, home-cooked meals when you don’t have time to. Three MUST have characteristics when choosing your agent for your next transaction: knowledgeable, experienced and creative. A realtor must be knowledgeable. I've spent countless hours studying the current real estate market, the homes currently available and those that sold. Experienced. Being a homeowner and buying and flipping homes for many years, I have not only helped many others, but I have done so myself time and time again! I work closely with a group of professionals and I am happy to share my photographers, stagers, attorneys, inspectors and lenders. A realtor must be Creative. Every person, every transaction, every situation is different. Being creative and flexible helps me to work with different personalities and situations using a creative and problem solving attitude along with fine tuned negotiating skills. FEATURED
a Lady Savant, fashion godess and authentic spirit
“
Tiffany Piñero, Photo by Jennifer Casson
Tiffany is a breath of fresh air. If you want to sharpen up your image, need cheering up or want to be inspired Tiffany’s the lady to call! Her authentic spirit and humble nature coupled with her business savvy and fashion chops, make her a force to be wreckoned with and yes, a Lady Savant. In less than a year from quiting her fancy nine to five, Taffany has reinvented herself and come out on top!
How you make others feel about themselves says a lot about you." I love this quote because the style industry can be so vain. I do what I do because I want my clients to truly FEEL that beauty. Because when they feel like they can rule the world, well my work is done” TP
1. What was your corporate job about? I was a trend specialist for a
private label company. Forecasting the colors, patterns and designs that correlated with the high end fashion clients we catered to. I also was in charge of creating editorial presentations with fashion related copy, giving the products a magazine style presentation to share with clients & the public.
2. How did you come to the decision to be a full time stylist? What motivated you to take that leap? The decision for me to go into
the fashion industry was made before I was even born. With my grandmother a wedding gown seamstress and my mother an event designer, being creative was the only way I would be satisfied. I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology for fashion design and although grueling, I really loved it. I realized after getting my Associates in that area that I wanted to concentrate my Bachelor's in Styling. There was a heavy focus on color, light theories, fabric studies, and the history of fashion as part of the course study. I felt having these tools in my arsenal would make me a force. After graduating I volunteered with commercial and editorial stylists while working my full time job and I never stopped. And eventually, I started getting paid! After 7 years of doing it on the side it was time. I liked what I was doing at work, but I knew I wanted to give my business a proper chance. After ringing in the new year {2014} I said to myself, what if I am in this exact spot next year? What if nothing changes? It was an impulse move but I left my job with nothing but the belief that if it was sink or swim for my business, I was going to swim like hell.

What inspired you to start your own Nerium business? “I saw a friends before and after picture and found out how simple the product and business were and how young the company was and jumped in. I thought who doesn't want some extra money? I never imagined it could become such an important part of my life, allow me to leave a corporate job I was unhappy in, and shape me into a better friend, wife, and just all around person.”
What sets Nerium apart?
What sets our skin care apart is our NAE-8 antioxidant extract from the Nerium Oleander. 3. What are your biggest challenges in starting a new business?
Overcoming the fear was the biggest challenge. I had my handful of clients who had been with me through the years, but I knew I would exhaust those resources in a month's time. Then what?! The first two months I was a roller coaster, "wheee look at me doing my thing!" immediately followed by "I can't do this, I'm going to be sick" Eventually the one day at a time method came into play along with me appreciating how far I had come in just a few short months. Gratitude killed the fear.
4. What are your goals?
There are so many goals! Seriously, there's a binder full of them. Currently I am working on an e-book with my favorite style secrets, so finishing that is numero uno.In the next five years, to have a small staff and take this styling company & our clients, to the next level. And maybe add mompreneur to the resume(!)
5. What advice could you give all women?
Don't be threatened by other women. We need to be there for each other. The biggest blessings that have come my way business wise are from another woman. Because another woman wasn't threatened by me {trust me I know the big hair & loud personality can be scary} and vice versa, we saw each other's strengths and found opportunities and ways to grow.
6. What services do you offer?
There are two sides to my business, the residential, catering to personal wardrobe clients and commercial, which caters to businesses. For residential clients I offer the one on one services stylists are known for, image consulting, personal shopping, and a service I developed to expand on closet clean-outs called a Wardrobe Rejuvenation which focuses on getting rid of what's plaguing you while making outfits with what remains. For commercial clients I provide creative direction, style advertisements, and have developed a service that helps small businesses have strong images and copy writing for their social media platforms.
8. Must have fashion item?
As cheesy as it sounds, it is something that is free, confidence. Wear what highlights your best features and fits you well, it will show in your face down to the way you walk. A hot pair of shoes won't hurt the situation either though... ;)

I have NEVER EVER endorsed or sold a product personally until a friend introduced me to the company Plexus Slim. WHAT’S TRENDING? T with Fashion Stylist Tiffany Piñero
here are few things that can console your heart when summer comes to a close; for some it’s the return of football, others it’s all the festivities autumn brings, and for the rest of us, there’s fashion. A chill in the air enables us to wear looks that can only be eloquently described as “yummy”. Piled up knits, luxe layers, knee high boots!, all sealed with a scarf, are the dimensional staples that are as functional as they are fabulous. This season seems rather indulgent as over-the-top shearling can be found in every way, shape and form and if volume isn’t your thing you may be loving the subtle chicness of the wrap coat or swingy silhouettes that tip their hat to the 60’s. Filling your fall quota with one or some of these trending styles will have you looking fresh and saying, summer who? The Trend: Shear Comfort
Where we saw it:
Isabel Marant, Burberry Prorsum, Akris
What it is: What it isn’t is more like it.
This cozy texture is the perfect trim on a winter vest, the lining of your favorite booties and entire coats are making a statement in solid shearling.

How to wear it in real life: Shearling although more understated than fur has an air of glamour, pair it back with something more utilitarian for an interesting juxtaposition. The Trend: Going Grey Where we saw it: Ralph Lauren, Anthony Vaccarello, Chanel What it is: While holding back from the fifty shades puns, this is a styling technique where the look isn’t totally monochromatic but tones of grey work their magic in a sophisticated manner.

How to wear it in real life: There are many shades to this neutral hue, layer yours on according to its warmer or cooler undertones for a modern effect.
Comeback Kids: Gone for some seasons but never forgotten a few trends that are having a major moment for Fall 2014

Feng Shui, The 5 Elements and You
The principles of
Feng Shui have been around for thousands of years, that tells me there must be by Lois Kramer-Perez CHt. something to this! The universal aspect of Feng Shui which appears in all applications, based on the cycles of nature is 5 element theory. These 5 elements which we find in nature and in our space, also exist within each of us. Working with clients, before we address their physical space, I begin with their personal feng shui.. hence how I describe my work as “I Feng Shui People, Places and Things! We each have the potential for 3 elemental influences in our nature based on our year, month and day of birth. The position of these elements will also have an influence on how the characteristics are expressed. The most powerful aspect of this information is the behavior we express based on our elemental nature. The more we understand what makes us tick, the more we can create a lifestyle that supports us and have a better understanding of the people in our lives, creating more harmonious relationships. Our primary number, our yearly number is our inherent nature, how we live our life year.
26
Here is a quick formula to find your primary number. Add up all the numbers of your birth year, combine to one single digit then subtract from 11. Example: 1965= 1+9+6+5 =21, 2+1=3, 11-3 = 8
Your Primary number is 8, refer to the chart below: 8 Earth * the new year begins Feb 04, therefore birthdates Jan 01 – Feb 03 use the prior year.
The 5 Elemental Personalities 1 “Water” Thinkers: Influenced by your emotions you express "watery.” Horizontal is your favorite position. A daydream believer, flexible & adaptable, you do not like structure. 3, 4 “Tree” Doers: You are active, driven, kind & optimistic. Always on the go, adventure is what you seek. “3” you are the boom of thunder. “4” you are the wind. 2, 5, 8 “Earth” Nurturers: You are Stable, Loyal & Supportive. “2" will tend to nurture everyone. "5” will always be at the center of it all. “8” has tough exterior while tender & gentle on the inside. Comfort is key. 6, 7 “Metal” Refined: You are organized, focused and confident. “6” you are the authority & visionary. “7” you are graceful, elegant & most intuitive. 9 “Fire” Inspiring: You are curious, passionate & charismatic. If it isn’t fun, you are not interested. As much as you inspire others, you need to be inspired. Combining the 5 element calculation with reading the physical aspects of a person, the information about the individual’s make-up becomes more unique. Our physical attributes are also connected with the 5 elements, for instance spiky hair and pointy nose adds the 5 fire element. Shadows under the eyes or a dome forehead adds the 1 water element. These attributes may enhance an already present element or add an element not present in the birth year, month and day.
We gain a clear understanding of the people in our lives, as we begin to understand their expressions through the 5 elements. If you would like to know more about your 5 element nature, and the elements associated with your day and month, I would love to hear from you!

How To Start A Conversation About Your Sexual Needs And Wants With Your Partner: As a relationship therapist, I have encountered couples who can discuss many sensitive topics with one another but have difficulty talking about sex . A client told me recently: “ we’ve been together for 15 years but we never talk about sex”. Why is this the case? So…do you want to be more playful in bed but don’t know how to talk to your partner about this? Do you want more variety in the bedroom, but feel fearful to verbalize that to him/her? 10 specific Keys to Sexual Connection. Key #1 Ask if it’s a good time. Key #2 Tell him in 1 sentence your main subject of the dialogue: “I would like to talk to you about my sexual preferences/fantasies/needs…is it a good time? Key#3 Don’t do it during sex Key #4 Talk about what would you like to get more of, don’t say what you don’t like him doing . Key#5 Use some of these sense stems that I developed to open the conversation about great sex: 1) I feel most erotic when you… 2) I feel more aroused by you when… 3) I feel most open in sex when I…/when you… 4) It turns me on when you…/ when I 5) What I want you to know about my sexuality… 6) During foreplay I like/enjoy… 7) I would like to be touched by you (how/where)…
KEY #6 Ask your partner to share his preferences with you also, as it helps to be clear about some sexual desires and nuances you both might have assumed about each other, but may be have never openly talked about it. It will also show you how well you sexually know your partner. Key #7 Don’t assume anything about the sexual relationship (or any relationship with the other ). What most men like- your current partner might not particularly enjoy and vise versa. Key #8 Tell him how much you would like to try what you learned from that dialogue with him and how much you are looking forward to having special sexy time with him in the near future to experiment with all those tips. Key#9 Remember to compliment him on every new behavior/sexy technique you’ve expressed/requested –when he actually implements it in real life. If you enjoyed it- say it out loud! You’ll get more of what you want, if you let him feel good about himself and his skills as a lover! Key #10 if you want to learn more about how to improve your seduction skills, sexual assertiveness, expressiveness, and you want to continue this dialogue- please, reach out to me for a Skype or office consultation for yourself or your couple. I practice in Hoboken and NYC. I am a certified couples and sex therapist. Nataliya Rusetskaya, LCSW www.Key2Connection.com

Rohsler’s Allendale Nursery & Florist
T
ime to plan for fun fall activities! Halloween, hay rides and apple picking seems to be the quinessential start to all things fall. There are quite a few lists of apple picking orchards floating around but most include orchards that are too far (driving two plus hours with the kids just to go apple picking seems crazy) or they’re missing a really great close one. So, here’s Playground Talk’s List– we’ve done the searching and sorting for you– a list specifically for those who live in Bergen
County or close to it.
Rohsler’s Allendale Nursery & Florist (100 Franklin Turnpike, Allendale, NJ): Offer private hayrides for groups of 10 or more (that’s 5 parents and 5 kids) weekdays during the fall. You will see animals along the way and stop at a fenced in haunted carnival. At the carnival enjoy a cup of cider and don’t forget to choose your own pumpkin to bring home. Wightman’s Farm (Route 202 or 1111 Mt. Kemble Ave., Morristown, NJ): This place is a pumpkin amusement park with activities galore for kids of all ages: a market, HUGE maze, apple picking, hayride and pumpkin picking, a pumpkin sling shot and a kiddie corn pit. There are antique shops, country gift shops, consignment stores, and even a great candy shop. You could definitely spend a full day here. Alstede Farms (84 Route 513 (Old Route 24), Chester, NJ) – Alstede Farms is worth the drive out to Chester. They have hayrides, a hay pyramid, wagon rides, a corn maze, a corn kingdom, pony rides, moon bounce, a farm store and a large variety of pick-your-own. Don’t forget to go home with their homemade fudge. Warwick Winery (114 Little York Road, Warwick, NY) – This winery is a great way for the entire family to enjoy a fall day. Picnic in the orchards or eat at the bar/restaurant while listening to live music and sampling their wines. Bring a football and toss it around in the open fields. $5 per car parking on the weekends. Weed Orchard (43 Mount Zion Road, Marlboro, NY) – Take the old-fashioned wagon through the orchards, eat at a picnic table near the lake, taste the hot apple cider donuts in the bakery section of the farm market or get lost in the pirate themed corn maze. Plus, don’t miss all the kids activities! Pennings Orchard (Route 94 & Warwick Turnpike, Warwick, NY) – This orchard is packed with things to do - a farm market and bakery, garden center, Harvest Grill & Brew Pub, ice cream stand and barn yard buddies for the kids. Pennings is the perfect place for all!

So you’ve just received beautiful flowers hopefully from us and now you want them to last as long as possible! These are the most important handling tips to follow:
If your flowers are not delivered in a vase, you’ll want to quickly “process” them. They just need a little TLC and they will perk right back up. You’ll want to get the flowers in water as soon as you can so they can drink up! Step 1: Using a sharp pair of shears, cut at least 1” off each stem and cut on a diagonal. This provides more surface area for the flower to drink water. Step 2: Make sure the vase you’re using is clean. I like to use a little bleach and water to clean mine, but a little dish soap will work too. Just rinse it well and fill it up with clean room temperature water. For most flowers 3” to 4” of water is enough. Step 3: Remove any leaves or foliage that would fall under the water line. Having these in the water will contribute to bacteria growth and will shorten the vase life of your flowers. You might be asking what about flower food such as bleach, aspirin or all the other things that people say to add to the water to help flowers last longer? Mainly flower food will help. It contains sugar to feed the plant and a fungicide to kill bacteria, but more important is to keep your flowers and vase clean! After a couple days... -Re-cut the stems every 2-3 days -Rinse and clean out your vase each time, re-filling with clean water. -Put the vase in a place away from direct sunlight and away from drafts and heat. -Last, don’t place the flowers next to a bowl of fruit which can give off ethylene, a natural gaseous plant hormone that causes ripening of fruit and aging of flowers. By just following our tips, you’ll be able to maximize your enjoyment of your beautiful blooms. If you have any questions, friend us on FB, leave a comment or email us www.europeanpetals.com. We love hearing from you!

Koko. We Change Lives!
I literally cannot wait for the end of my workday, so I can get to the Club. It is noncompetitive, personal, with a low-key, friendly & encouraging atmosphere! I’ve been out of the gym for 8 years since raising my children and going back to work full time. Felt a little intimidated at other gyms and afraid I wouldn’t be able to “keep up”. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Koko.
