The five things you don’t want to miss this season

If there’s one event you can’t miss this season it’s the Guadalupe County Fair. Parades, rides, pageants, carnival prizes, funnel cakes and other fair food. It’s scheduled for the second week in October. You can learn more about the event at gcfair.org

Friday night football is just about a religion in Texas and homecoming is like Easter.

Seguin crowns its new royalty on Oct. 3 and it’s always a sight to see.

Autumn’s first explosion of color comes courtesy of the Pumpkin Patch at First United Methodist Church. With a story time, photo opportunities and a chance to find the perfect Jack O’Lantern, the patch is where it’s at. The patch usually opens late September and operates until Oct. 31.

The Lighted Holiday Stroll Parade will roll down Austin Street and past Central Park on Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m. which is not just a parade but marks the Christmas lights being flipped on downtown.

One of the ‘nuttiest’ events is Pecan Fest & Heritage days which is scheduled for Oct. 24-26. The threeday event stretches from downtown to the Red Barn to Sebastopol and includes food, music and shopping.

I’m not a mor orni n ng person. I’ve never bee een n a morni ning ni ng person.

But that’s another story.

In college I tried an 8 a.m m. cla lass on ncce. I would arrive e r ght at 8 with a coffee and a Pop ri p Tartt. I would eat my be br ea akfast and would promptly go bac a k to sleep. Now, it seems, I actually can get out of the door without any random missing parts.

Breakfast, though, is still a challenge.

There’s not really time for snacking and whatever I shovel down in the morning has to get me through to my 30 minutes of lunch.

Thankfully, this seems to be a problem that’s pretty widespread among people who come up with recipes. The Internet is chock full of tasty-looking recipes for make ahead breakfasts. And a few that are not so tastylooking. If it requires bizarre ingredients (sorry Paleo people, but I’m not spending $10 on a tiny bag of almond flour) I’m probably out. But I did find a few healthy options that require a bit of work in advance, but no setup when it’s time to eat and run.

I recently tried a healthy fruit crisp recipe adapted from “The Law Student’s Wife” blog.

A neighbor dropped off a big bag of peaches from his tree (thanks Tim) and I chopped them up for this recipe.

It’s tasty with or without a dollop of Greek yogurt on top and feels way more unhealthy than it is.

Another irresistible option — mango pancakes — can be served with the traditional syrup or just eaten cold out of your hand while you drive.

Ricotta helps keep the cakes light and fluffy and lemon brings out the mango’s tartness.

They’re a nice break from the same old cereal.

Mango ricotta pancakes Serves 2-4 zest of one lemon about 1 c. chopped mango 1/3 c. sugar 2 c. all purpose flour pinch of salt 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 c. part-skim ricotta 1 1/4 c. milk

Breakfast Peach Crisp Serves 4 1 pound of peaches 2 T. granulated sugar 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. lemon zest, grated pinch of nutmeg Topping: 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter 2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar 2 Tbsp. brown sugar 1/2 c. rolled oats (not quick) 1/4 c. all-purpose flour 1/4 c. whole wheat flour 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 1/8 tsp. cinnamon Optional: 2 tbsp. nuts (almonds, pecans or walnuts), toasted and chopped Optional: Greek yogurt for topping Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Chop or slice peaches so they’re in chunks about 1/2 inch in size.

Make the filling by putting the fruit in a bowl, stir in the two tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, lemon zest and nutmeg. Set aside.

Make the topping by melting the butter in a saucepan and mixing with the olive oil in the pan. Stir in the last two tablespoons of sugar, the brown sugar, rolled oats, flours and cinnamon. Sprinkle in salt and nuts, if using.

Move the filling into a small baking dish or loaf pan and sprinkle the topping evenly over top.

For peach crisp (or if you’re using berries or other soft fruit) bake for 15 minutes, cover with aluminum foil and bake another 15 minutes. If you use apples or pears, bake for 40-45 minutes, and cover with foil halfway through.

3 eggs, separated butter Mix mango, lemon zest and sugar in a small bowl. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, mix flour, salt and baking powder. In another bowl, beat ricotta, milk and egg yolks and fold into the dry ingredients until just combined. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.

Gently fold the mango mixture

into the batter, then add the egg whites. Mix it until just combined and not a second longer.

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium low heat. Melt a blob of butter and place the pancake right on top of the butter.

Cook until bubbles start to form and the bottom turns golden brown.

Flip and cook until the other side turns nicely brown.

Continue with each pancake until the batter is gone. Eat with maple syrup or save to eat on the run. autumn, autumn,well welldone done~~Sizzle Sizzle 99

By Sam Kuykendall Tattoos tell a story — but make sure you read the entire book before judging the cover.

In this generation tattoos are everywhere you look — and they aren’t just for gang members or rough and tumble bikers.

Nurses, police officers and many other professionals have tattoos, and for many, those pieces of art are very important to them.

A recent Fox News poll found 20 percent of voters, or one in five, has at least one tattoo. That’s up from 13 percent in 2007.

In addition the number reporting they have two or more tattoos has nearly doubled in the last seven years: 14 percent up from 8 percent in 2007.

Beyond Looking Cool Schertz resident Russell Autenrieth, 44, spent 12 years in the military serving his country.

He has four tattoos.

He is now a nurse — a profession where he gets to help people every day.

“I chose to get my first tattoo when I was 18 because I thought it looked cool, now I view my tattoos as art,” Autenrieth said.

He just recently got a cover up done on his second tattoo.

“I was young when I got the tattoo and I didn’t want it anymore so I got something I wanted to cover it up,” Autenrieth said.

As do many others Autenrieth believes the art of tattoos has “come a long way in the last 25 years.”

about lost it,” Autenrieth said. “She just couldn’t understand why someone would mark up their body.”

Autenrieth told his mother to look at it as a form of art and not as something bad. She is better about tattoos now.

“If I had unlimited money I would get tattoos as often as I like,” Autenrieth said.

Helping To Protect Haley Spence, 22, is another who gets tattoos whenever she can — and she’s as far as you can get from the stereotype that many still harbor about those with tattoos.

The recent graduate of Texas Lutheran University is a telecommunications operator at the Seguin Police Department and sports 17 tattoos.

“I always loved the way tattoos looked and how many meanings could be attached to just one tattoo,” Spence said.

She grew up watching her parents get tattoos and going to tattoo shops with them.

“I plan on getting many more tattoos, and I will hopefully be starting a sleeve this month,” she said.

A sleeve is a large tattoo, or a collection of smaller tattoos, usually themed in a similiar manner and that covers most or all of a person’s arm. The tattoo or tattoos usually stretch from shoulder to wrist.

Haley said she’s had many people tell her she shouldn’t have tattoos — and even some of her closest friends question her about them sometimes.

“I have had people tell me I would be more attractive without tattoos, or that I won’t be able to get a job. I have also had people ask me what my parents would think,” Spence said.

She explained her parents approve of her tattoos and view them as art, just as Spence does.

“Tattoos are stories and memories and also dreams and hopes,” Spence said.

Her favorite tattoo is on her left arm. It is two roses and dog tags. The roses are colored for the Air Force (pink) and the Army (red). The dog tags have the initials of her father, who is in the Army, and her brothers, who is in the Air Force.

“They are my heroes and I want to share that with everyone,” Spence said.

Spence’s tattoos are all over her body and she doesn’t hide them. She isn’t ashamed of the art on her body.

Staking A Claim Another person who is proud of their tattoos is Richard Taylor, 25 of Selma. Taylor has 10 tattoos.

“I was always fascinated by tattoos, and I wanted a way to stake my own claim on my body,” Taylor said.

“I wanted something about my appearance to stand out.”

Taylor is a data entry clerk for an insurance company and is from Seguin. He explains that some of his tattoos are things he wants to always remember.

“Most of my tattoos are lessons I never want to forget,” Taylor said.

He plans to get many more tattoos. He already has plans for several large color pieces and a large black and grey piece on his ribs, as well as a number of smaller pieces.

“I still have plenty of open canvas,” Taylor said.

The tattoo on Taylor’s calf is very important to him.

“It is a memorial tattoo for my Grandma,” Taylor said. “I drew it up when my mom and uncle were making her final arrangements.”

The tattoo includes her favorite bird and flower, the hummingbird and red rose around a clenched fist.

“The fist is because every time I said something sarcastic or snarky she would shake her fist under my nose and smile,” Taylor said.

Honoring Thy Mother Triniqua Collins, 20 is a Texas Lutheran University student majoring in athletic training and she has a special tattoo.

“My favorite tattoo I got in honor of my mom,” Collins said.

It is an awareness ribbon that has butterfly wings on it, across the top it says Virtuous Woman, and then on the ribbon it says Proverbs 31: 10-31.

“The ribbon is for multiple sclerosis which is the disease my mom has, the butterfly wings represent the growth that I’ve seen my mom go through since she has had MS, and the scripture is her favorite Bible verse,” Collins said.

Triniqua has six tattoos and says she plans to get a few more.

“Growing up lots of my family members had tattoos so it was nothing new to me,” Collins said. “I love that I am able to express myself through my body.”

An Artistic Viewpoint Someone else who is very familiar with tattoos is artist Jeremiah Camacho.

Camacho has been tattooing for about eight years

and he said he has done some pretty meaningful tattoos.

“One piece I recently did was a bouquet of flowers with each flower representing a family member that had passed away,” Camacho said.

“Each flower meant one thing and the colors meant another thing, it was very special.”

Camacho works at Body Expressions in Seguin and says that he just likes seeing people’s reaction when they see their tattoo.

“I am just happy when they love it, and when it comes out better than they expected,” Camacho said. “It is a good feeling.”

Camacho said the majority of people he gets coming in are in their mid-late 20s. Autenrieth, Spence, and Taylor were all 18 when they got their first tattoo. Camacho urges people to think about a tattoo before they choose to get it.

“Big pieces take research and drawing them out, now-a-days people want to get something as soon as possible and they don’t think out the whole canvas,” Camacho said.

Craft beers are shifting the drinking landscape

The hydrometer tells him how much sucrose remains in the beer so he knows when it has brewed sufficiently to be moved into a tank for aging.

By Ron Maloney There’s a revolution under way in the way Americans drink beer.

And in Seguin, Brian Schmoekel and his wife Jenna are leading the charge.

If your guess is consolidation in the market by multinational brewers such as the Belgian firm that bought out Anheuser-Busch several years back to control 25 percent of the world’s beer market, it would be a good guess — but the wrong one.

What’s happening here is that beer is going old school, hyper-local, tremendously tasty — and 18Sizzle Sizzle~~autumn, autumn,well welldone done 18

incredibly diverse.

And that’s the way it always was with beer going back at least to the Middle Ages — every town had its own local brewer and every big town had a bunch of them.

And so, Seguin has its own craft brewer — BS Brewing, which Schmoekel operates out of a commercial building off Old Lehmann Road, producing kegs of several different kinds of beers that are sold from San Antonio to Georgetown, including at Seguin’s Guadalupe Grill House, Sean Patrick’s in San Marcos and Landa Station in New Braunfels. Once in a while, Austin Street Live here in Seguin taps one of

Schmoekel’s kegs, too.

Since the late 1800s, when large-scale industrial manufacturing overtook the brewing industry, the trend has been toward consolidation and homogenization with fewer and larger companies controlling the market.

Beginning the 1980s, though, the industry has gone back to its roots in Germany, Belgium and Great Britain — and toward micro or craft breweries, which today reflect most of the growth in the beer industry.

Loosely defined as breweries that produce less than 15,000 beer barrels a year — in BS Brewing’s case way less — the terms “craft” or “micro” brewery apply just as much to an attitude or outlook that embraces diversity of ingredients, adaptability and customer service.

Craft brewers enjoyed solid growth in the first half of 2014 with a production increase of 18 percent over the same period in 2013, according to new mid-year data released by the Brewers Association, the non-profit trade association that represents the majority of U.S. breweries.

Through the end of June, 2014, approximately 10.6 million barrels of beer were sold by craft brewers, up from 9.0 million barrels over the first half of 2013.

“The sustained double-digit growth of the craft category shows the solidity of demand for fullerflavored beer in a variety of styles from small and independent American producers,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association, in a news release. “Craft brewers are providing worldclass, innovative products that continue to excite beer lovers and energize the industry.”

As of June 30, 2014, 3,040 breweries were operating in the U.S., 99 percent of which were small and independent craft breweries. Additionally, there were 1,929 breweries in planning. Craft brewers currently employ an estimated 110,273 full-time and part-time workers, many of which are manufacturing jobs, contributing significantly to the U.S. economy.

“Coupled with the continued rise in the number of breweries, the market growth of craft brewers highlights the ongoing localization of beer production in the United States,” added Watson. “More and more, people are enjoying the products from America’s small and independent brewers, making this country a true destination for beer.”

Schmoekel was a finance student at Texas State University who liked brewing beer in his garage and saw that he wasn’t lacking for fellow students who enjoyed helping drink it.

As part of his education, he developed a business plan for a brewing business.

“I created a business plan for a brewery to learn how to create a business plan,” Schmoekel said. “I was part of a fraternity that focused on that type of stuff, and being a finance major, I saw the numbers were really starting to add up. I liked making beer

580 - Saint Arnold of Metz is born.

He ends a plague by convincing people to drink beer rather than impure water.

1573 - Heinrich Knaust writes the first extensive book on brewing in Germany, describing in detail about 150 different beers. He calls the “noble Hamburg beer the queen of all other wheat beers.”

Of those craft breweries, there were 1,237 brewpubs, 1,412 microbreweries and 119 regional craft breweries.

and people really liked drinking my beer, so I knew I had two things going for me. My wife and I decided to scale it up quite a bit and try to brew commercially, and it’s been working out really well for us.”

The “BS” in BS Brewing reflects Schmoekel’s initials, but they have a bull for a logo just for the fun of it.

They operate out of a 1,200 sq. ft. commercial building where Schmoekel is basically a one-man show.

“It’s definitely hard, but it’s a lot of fun,” Schmoekel said. “We started operation, broke ground in August, 2012 and we’ve been operating on-tap since April 2013.”

Schmoekel brews several different types of beers. Only one is a year-around brew and the rest vary by the season.

“We have a Seguin ale and College Chronic are my main two,” he explained. “They’re good sellers.

We also have a Viking ale, it’s called Caedmon’s Ale and named after our son. It’s a lightly smoked juniper Viking ale. We have a pumpkin latte milk stout and a Pecan Ale with Honey that we’ve released once already. It’s been wonderfully successful and we’re bringing it back.”

He has a gingerbread beer, a pumpkin pecan and he’s going to offer a double chocolate stout around Christmastime.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Schmoekel promises.

Coming up for Halloween, Schmoekel expects to have a brew he calls Dark English Strong Ale — which will be his first foray into selling beer by the bottle instead of the keg.

“Six packs are labor intensive.

This will be a 22-ounce bottle, and they look awesome,” Schmoekel said. “That’s the easiest way to get on the shelf.”

While a big step up from a home brewing setup in a five-gallon carboy, BS Brewing is still a pretty small operation — even by craft brewing standards.

“A micro-brewer has a system that brews 10 barrels (just over 300 gallons) or above,” Schmoekel said.

“Anything less is a ‘nano’ brewery, and we’re considered a nano brew-

Typically, I’ll brew the same beer two days in a row because the vessel I use will hold 310 gallons, and I end up with 10 barrels of product.”

A distributor markets as much beer as Schmoekel can produce and delivers the kegs from San Antonio up to Georgetown and Round Rock.

Schmoekel hasn’t tried to penetrate the Austin market and its club scene, although he’s eyeing it.

“We’ve skipped over Austin for now because it’s too big of a market for me and I’m having a hard enough time keeping San Antonio happy,” Schmoekel said. “But we’re in seven cities right now, and it’s just a matter of brewing the beer. All of our seasonals are pre-sold, and it’s just a matter of getting them in kegs and getting them out the door.”

Like the rest of the craft brew industry, business is exploding, and Schmoekel’s having fun.

“That’s a kind of a cool thing about craft brewing,” Schmoekel said. “I’m friends with a lot of the brewers and a lot of the owners in San Antonio, New Braunfels, Wimberley and around. It’s not competition as much as it is camaraderie. We’re all asking each other for advice, although I’m one doing more asking than giving because I’m kind of one of the new guys on the block but it’s just a fun business to be in. It’s as fun pushing some-

one else’s beer as it is mine. If they come here, I’m definitely going to show them what I can do. If I go to their place, I’m usually received in the same way.�

To get started drinking craft beer, ask for them or ask your friends about them.

They command a premium price over mass market beers, but don’t be put off by price because, at their generally much higher alcohol content, you’re paying less buck for the bang than you would for the

nationwide brand. “I’m a proponent for people drinking my product, but there are so many craft breweries in Texas that are doing a great job. It’s a matter of maturing your own palate,� Schmoekel explained. You can go out and find a craft beer that matches your palate. If you’re used to drinking the lighter lagers, the blondes, there’s definitely a gateway beer out there for you that’s going to introduce you to craft beer.�

Schmoekel knows his Seguin Ale has been heavy start for some people, but it’s been well-received. “It’s real malty, it’s real hoppy — it’s a good beer to chew on,�

Schmoekel says, laughing. “But there’s such a variety out there. If all you’re going to do is drink the same beer every day, I don’t see what the enjoyment is in that. It’s all about finding a different beer each time and trying something for the first time. drinking a different beer each day.�

For many of us video games have been a constant companion.

From Pac-Man to Super Mario the bleeps and bloops defined our generation’s hobbies. Now many of us have children, nieces and nephews who play a whole new suite of games. LRN2PLAY will get you ready to play alongside them or at least help you avoid looking like too big a noob.

Imagine living in a world where if you want to play Super Mario Bros. as Luigi you have to pay another $8. Want to play as Peach? That’s another $8.

That, in a nutshell, is Skylanders, a fiendish melding of plastic toys and unlockable video game characters that has made some companies very, very, very rich over the last three years and spawned a bevy of imitators — including one from Disney and another forthcoming variant from Nintendo itself.

What do you need to know if you want to play Skylanders?

Bring your wallet.

And your patience.

But mainly your wallet.

Understand that you don’t have to buy any extra characters to play and defeat the game. You can do that with the characters that will come included with whatever version of the game you buy.

But it’s kind of like buying a car — without mirrors, seat belts, power steering, cruise control, headlights, windshield wipers and only three wheels.

Yeah, you’ve got transportation, but it’s stripped down. The games go through gyrations to make clear that you are missing out on the real fun if you only had more characters.

keyed to particular type of characters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; many of which you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;starter pack.â&#x20AC;?

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got characters spread across eight different Skylander elements, including fire, air, earth, water, magic, life, undead and tech.

If you want to unlock all the areas of the games youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need at least one of each element â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s before you start getting into the specialty characters like Giants â&#x20AC;&#x201D; more expensive characters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that were added as the series, now in itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third sequel, have been released.

Oh, and some of those characters have multiple versions from multiple games â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and even inside those games there are multiple versions, including Legendary (special paint color) and Light Core (they light up when in use).

Old Skylanders work on new games, but new Skylanders donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work on old games. The last game, Swap Force, introduced a mechanic where you could take the top of one Skylander and the bottom of another Skylander to make a new Skylander.

If it sounds like you need a flow chart, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because you kind of do. There are, at the time this is being written, 287 Skylander figurines released â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and still more on the horizon.

The newest game in the series, Skylanders: Trap Team is scheduled for an Oct. 5 release and will be available on basically every platform known to man â&#x20AC;&#x201D; all the consoles as well as Android, Fire and iOS.

The Basics Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll pick a Skylander character and put it on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Portal of Powerâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a device that connects to the game system. Once your Skylander is there it will appear in the game world and you use the controller to tell it where to go and what to hit.

From there itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a straight beat-em-up style game with some puzzle elements. You have different attacks depending on which button you press â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and some

characters have some quasi defensive abilities.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Be A Sucker If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re playing with someone else donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get lulled into picking a character without a ranged attack. You want something that can hit from a distance with lasers, arrows or blades â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Prismbreak (left page) is a good starter in the early versions of the game. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll use money and experience gained while playing the game to level up and buy upgrades for your character. If you take your Skylander to another personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still yours and has all your upgrades. Pretty neat. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do battle or arena fights until youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got the game mechanics nailed or youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be frustrated and disappointed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; particularly against an experienced opponent.

The Bottom Line Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the deal. The Skylanders games are a lot of fun. Yes, the character treadmill is costly, and if you have a child who is a completionist you can end up homeless in a van down by the river if you buy them all, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still a great cooperative game experience to play alongside a child or grandchild. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not so complex that it leaves you confused, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deep enough to not bore you. Just realize when the experience is over you will have hundreds of dollars in plastic figurines that will likely never be played with again. Know what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting into, but it can still be an absolute blast.

As the holidays roll around and the town lights up green and red, some people find themselves feeling blue.

Tara Kohenberg, a state licensed clinical social worker and therapist at the Teddy Buerger Center and Heritage Program, said there is a direct correlation between the holiday season and depression.

“There are factors contributing to holiday depression and the elderly,” she said. “It can affect everybody, really.”

Loneliness can take its toll, especially on the elderly, Kohenberg said.

“During the holidays older people might feel the passing of time more acutely,” she said. “They’ve lost their parents, a sibling, a lot of friends who have died and then a lot of people have a lot of distance between them and their kids because they moved far away. It gets to where the traditional reunions and rituals that you experienced at Christmas and Thanksgiving or Hanukkah and those holidays now don’t mean anything because all of your people are gone.”

It’s even more difficult when their family lives out of state and the only connection is a phone call.

“Yes you may get to talk to them on the phone but it is not the same,” she said. “You see these people on TV in the holiday movies and everybody is warm and loving and all terrific, and then in real life you live here, they live there and you get to say ‘Merry Christmas’ over the phone.”

Losing a loved one is never easy, especially when the holidays come around, Kohenberg said.

“When somebody loses a spouse, a child or a loved one in the last year the holidays are horrible, especially when you begin to think about all of the times that you had,” she said. “That can be a really hard period. It is supposed to be like a painting where everybody looks wonderful and here you are missing a piece of your heart, thinking about all of the good times you used to have instead of living in the moment enjoying the now.”

The pressures of buying gifts and making an impression on the kids or grandchildren can put a damper on the holiday season, especially when money is tight, Kohenberg said.

“We want to have this big wonderful Christmas for our kids or other people and what you want to do and what your pocket book will allow you to do are two different things and that is very disappointing,” she said.

Kohenberg said.

“They have to start saving back in May or June to get enough to do something special,” she said. “When you look forward to Christmas that far in advance and then it peters out because nobody is around, that is a big let down.”

Kohenberg offered a couple of tips to avoid the blues.

“Live within your means, look for the simple things,” she said. “Look for a phone call more than worrying about giving presents. Spend time with friends around you or get involved with your church or volunteer activities where you are part of helping somebody else less fortunate than yourself. Those kinds of things help the holidays go by faster and a little easier.”

While some may be willing to seek help, many feel they can do it on their own which could cause bigger issues, Kohenberg said.

“With older people they are of the ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ mentality and ‘snap out of it,’” she said.

“Well, this is a medical illness that needs to be treated medically. It is not just a get over it kind of thing. If left undiagnosed and untreated, depression can lead to a greater loss of independence.”

If left untreated, depression can cause physical ailments and eventually lead to death, Kohenberg said.

“It will show up as a greater somatic complaints and even premature deaths because they don’t take care of themselves and people think they are just getting older,” she said. “A lot of times they are failing to take care of themselves.”

Kohenberg offered up a few signs to keep an eye out for when approaching the holiday season.

“There are a lot of different symptoms and not everyone is going to have the same ones,” she said. “There is persistent sadness, excessive worry about finances or health or bill pay, weight changes either up or down, inability to concentrate.”

One of the most notible signs is lack of interest and sudden withdrawl from social life, Kohenberg said.

“If somebody who was very active is now withdrawn that would be a big red flag for me,” she said. “If you notice they are not going to church as much or even quit the choir — lack of energy or interest in things they used to do — like sewing or crocheting or gardening — those are all things to look for.”

Everybody washes their car.

Some of us drive through an automatic car wash.

Some of us hand wash and vacuum — and maybe throw on some wax every once in a while.

But very few of us — and Jay Halbardier is one — go way, way past the kind of clean you can achieve with a sponge or an Electrolux.

They carry a kit of cleaning chemicals, an assortment of rags, pads and brushes and often use two buckets to wash a car.

They are the automotive detailers — the OCD crowd of the car hobby.

They sweat the small stuff — the things most of us never see or barely notice that, to a detailer, just scream “poor maintenance!”

The goal isn’t merely to clean the car, but to keep it looking new. Some detailers will repair or cover up scratches or dings in paint as well as fix damage to leather, vinyl or fabric upholstery and interior surfaces.

The sky — and the thickness of your wallet — is the limit.

Halbardier, known around here for his work on cars trucks and motorcycles, worked for years at Seguin Ford and Griffith Ford.

He has detailed vehicles for three decades and has taught a lot of other people how to detail.

“I could take you from step one to step 40, answer any questions you have and walk you right through it,” he said.

Everybody who details cars has his or her own approach that’s a reflection not only of their skills, but of their personality, and Halbardier, who washes and rinses his truck every other day, says you can tell an awful lot about a person by how he or she maintains their vehicle.

Most people, he said, just go to a car wash, wash the car, dry it off, vacuum it and consider the job done for a few dollars’ worth of quarters or small bills.

of the rag and a pair of buckets — one each for soapy and clear water. They follow up with wax to protect the car’s finish. They never, ever let an automatic car wash’s spinning brushes touch their car, lest it impart a cross-hatched set of scratches in the clear coat.

That’s all fine, Halbardier says, if that’s acceptable to you. Be sure, if using a hand-held hose to be considerate of others around you when it comes to overspray — and the same applies when you’re vacuuming out the interior.

“Don’t ever, ever when you dry the car after you’ve washed it and you’re going to vacuum it and others are drying their cars around you, just bang the floor mats out on the ground next to them,” he says.

“All that does is creates dust and dirt that floats onto the other guy’s car when he’s

getting ready to leave.”

Detailing is when you get all the way down into the job in the interior. Your tools are compressed air, cleaners, stain removers, an assortment of brushes down to toothbrushes and even smaller, and various tricks, picks and devices you’ve learned work over the years. Detailing is getting really precise about everything you’re doing in the cracks, crevices and air vents.

“In a way, it’s almost like surgery,” Halbardier says. “You prep it and then it’s clean, you operate and when it’s like brand new, it starts healing.”

In Halbardier’s view, what you’re doing is what has to be done to make the car look brand-new.

“You clean every square inch of it, behind the rubbers on the doors, under-

neath the hood, the trunk, removing the spare tire, cleaning the spare tire and vacuuming out where the spare tire is,” Halbardier says, warming to the subject.

“You put all the hardware back in, set the tire over it and place the cover over that in case you have a hatchback.”

On the interior, the first step is removing all the trash under the seats, the floor mats and blowing underneath the seats, Halbardier says.

“I even remove the back seats in peoples’ vehicles,” he says, “You wouldn’t believe all the candy, the gum, the stuff that’s fallen back there since their kids were infants, you know. As I’m a oneperson detailer and owner, as I go through your vehicle, all the stuff you’ve lost over the years from its first cleaning or if it’s never been cleaned like this and you’ve

had the car 10 years, everything I find goes back into a bag or a box and it’s returned to you so when you have time on the weekend, you can dig through this box and find souvenirs, chains, jewelry, cell phones, phone cords, you name it, it’s all there if you’ve never cleaned your car.”

Once he’s got the big stuff off the floor, he starts at the headliner and works his way back down to the carpets, vacuuming, removing the bits of dirt and debris in the cracks, using cleaners that work on the different materials involved in the construction of the interior and in general, finding uses for a toothbrush that would make a U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor proud.

That kind of attention, he says, is the difference between a first stage and a second stage cleaning. The second stage is pretty technical.

Halbardier uses products and chemicals provided by commercial suppliers that are typically stronger than what can be bought at Walmart or a home center, but he says retail products work just fine — although

I didn’t have a college degree to fall back on. I decided I could be a doctor for people’s cars and I started cleaning cars. he’s hesitant to recommend any particular product.

“It’s scary to tell someone to use one product over another,” he says.

“Over the years I’ve done it, I’ve learned how to mix chemicals to make them work better — you just learn how to operate with the stuff you have to use.”

There’s no telling how Halbardier will mix any of it up or how he’ll use it. When it comes to cleaners and chemicals, Halbardier is like an alchemist — he’s creative and he’s out to strike cleaning gold.

“You can take engine degreaser, break it down in different ways and use it for three different things,” Halbardier says. “That Fabuloso floor cleaner is an excellent choice for cars that have been smoked in. It covers the smoke smell.”

Heart & Soul Halbardier got into auto detailing as a young adult.

“One of my grandfathers owned Peerless Pharmacy in New Braunfels from 1924 to 1986, and my other grandfather had owned the Superdog Drive-In, and I was a very spoiled kid with a big, 4WD truck, a Europeanstyled roadracing motorcycle and an ‘82 ‘Vette,” Halbardier says. “I just drove around and had fun. I was always down at Comal Falls, and was living the life of Hugh Hefner. That’s what everybody used to tell me.”

The grandfathers passed and Halbardier got married, had kids and got a whole lot more particular about making a living.

“I didn’t have a college degree to fall back on,” he recalls. “When the

money went dry, I had to start learning what I needed to do. I thought about it and there were doctors delivering babies ... doctors with all kinds of specialties. I decided I could be a doctor for peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cars, and I started cleaning cars.â&#x20AC;?

He began at Martinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Detailing in New Braunfels and went to another place in the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;90s.

Later, he came to Seguin, where he worked until earlier this year. Soon, Halbardier hopes to begin his own mobile detailing business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can come to you and detail your vehicle, you can come to me and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll show you how to detail your own, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done it for 30 years and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve taught plenty of people how to do it,â&#x20AC;? Halbardier said.

On the job, his employers, who owned other dealerships, would send their detailers to Halbardier to train, and he trained quite a few outside the business, as well. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d impart the basics in a few days and send them back with a bunch of new knowledge.

Will they continue doing it the way I showed it to them or will they take shortcuts? Some of these guys, they get hired on at detailing places, follow their checklist and think they

Many of them donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the different brushes, the knowledge needed to pick the right cleaner for the job and some havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even had the benefit of working with compressed air, Halbardier says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once I show them that, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re off on their own,â&#x20AC;? Halbardier says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can impart the basics in three days, but to honestly train someone well takes three to six weeks, eight hours a day, five days a week.

If heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still not doing this or that or doing a sloppy job, I say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Well, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in his heart and soul.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; If thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the way he wants to perform and put his work out, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing anybody can do. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change him from doing what he wants to do.â&#x20AC;?

Best, Halbardier says, to hire an experienced pro in a dedicated detailing shop or at least seek the advice of one, particularly when a detailing is going to involve specialized services like scratch or upholstery repair. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most guys, I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t guarantee to put a buffer in his hands to buff out a light or moderate scratch or some-

thing like that,” Halbardier says. “It took me years to learn how to do high-speed buffing, wet sanding, scratch removal, claying, things like that. That takes a couple years of experience and the only way you learn is screwing people’s jobs up.”

But you don’t want to do that, either, he warns, because once you’ve burned through the clear coat, you have to paint the panel, then you have to clear coat it again, then fade the finishes into the adjacent panels.

“That ends up being six or seven hundred dollars versus the couple hundred dollars it used to be,” Halbardier says. “It’s a hands-on process. Things can get messed up pretty easily and if they do, they can be difficult or expensive to repair or replace.”

How Often? How Much?

His wash is going to set you back a little more than an automatic car wash will — his regular hand wash is $35 — and the prices will go up from there. But it will be a much more thorough and carefully delivered service.

All prices are subject to change depending on the specifics of the vehicle involved. A larger truck will cost a little more money and a car that’s especially grungy might command a premium price.

What you’re going to get for that is attention to detail, Spicer says.

“What we can do for someone who hasn’t had time to clean their car well is wash it and really go through taking care of the issues that are there,” Spicer says. “We hand wash it, rinse it off, hand dry it and then wax it. Inside, we clean and apply protective coatings to the surfaces and thoroughly clean the floors. That’s one of our main things — shampooing. Not many people do it.”

A second thing is valet service.

If you don’t want to go to 830 Customs, 830 Customs will come to you — at home or while you work.

Halbardier says the prices at 830 Customs are reasonable and even low compared to some other detailers, but adds that the higher end work can be pricier, depending upon what’s involved.

“It depends on your finances and on your car, how good you keep the upkeep on it,” Halbardier says.

“I usually recommend someone do three washes a month — and I don’t mind showing them how — and then, every six months, do a complete detail. Your wax isn’t guaranteed for the life of your car. It’s good for about six months of protection.”

Some settle for the wash, wax and vacuum and some want the job to go much further than that.

“Some people don’t really care,” Halbardier says. “I know a guy who just bought a car. He smokes in it, he

Undercarriage, tires and wheels: The undercarriage and chassis should be cleaned along with the rest of the exterior. This includes directly under the car, but also inside the wheel wells and around the major suspension components.

The plastic splash guards and inner fender liners should be dressed with a plastic protectant, and wheels and tires should be washed thoroughly before being dressed in a protectant.

Headlights, Taillights and Exterior Trim: Many detailers will apply a polishing compound to headlights and taillights showing signs of oxidation, but properly sealing them with a plastic sealant is important. Chrome trim cleaned, and any vinyl or plastic trim should be dressed with a protectant.

Interior Detailing: At minimum includes a cleaning of all carpeting and seating surfaces. This is done either by shampooing or by using a steam cleaner. In addition, all plastics and vinyl should be properly cleaned and dressed, and any leather should be conditioned and cleaned.

Engine Bay: Many detailing services may not include this in their standard packages. The engine bay should be lightly misted with water, and then cleaned with a suitable degreaser before being rinsed clean. Once properly dried, all silicone, plastic and rubber components should be properly dressed to protect them from cracking.

has all his tools in it, but that’s the way he lives. His house doesn’t look like that, but all of his cars are cluttered. They’re a disaster. He says, ‘I have to be able to work in it.’ Well, I guess if that’s the way he likes to work in his car, I just leave him alone, then.”

A good detailing probably requires about $25 worth of chemicals. Where the real cost comes in, Halbardier says, is labor time. Depending on the nature of the work, Halbardier’s going to cost between $22.50 and $38.50 an hour.

“If you don’t want to base it on the hour, I can base it on the panel,” he says. “Maybe $25 per panel or $200 to remove over-spray from your entire vehicle, which is a four to five-hour process.

Once I clay it, I have to come back and put another coat of wax on it because I’m taking off all the old wax. First I’m taking off the over-spray, then I’m taking off the old wax, then I’m claying it to make it smooth and perfect again. It’s a lot of work.”

Detailing a daily driver, Halbardier says, generally runs about four hours — two hours for the body and two hours for the interior. Depending on the size of the vehicle and how much work it needs, expect to spend between $125 and $225.

“When I’m estimating it, I’m thinking, how long is it going to take me to get this back to brand new?” Halbardier says. “That’s how I’m looking at it.”
