! A S L U T O T E M O WELC As many of you know, Williams Route 66 Marathon presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma Executive Director Chris Lieberman suffered a traumatic brain injury on March 8, 2016 in an accidental fall. On race weekend last year, we mentioned that doctors had told us Chris’s recovery is a marathon, not a sprint – and we’re happy to say he’s still fighting! Over the past year, we have watched as Chris has taken his first steps and relearned how to speak! He still has a ways to go, but we are hopeful for his recovery. There is no one who has a clearer and more pure vision for the Williams Route 66 Marathon and the City of Tulsa than Chris, and we think you’ll notice some of that “Lieberfun” flavor in this year’s event! Our board of directors is dedicated to keeping Chris’s vision alive in full Lieberfun style.
In fact, the “Lieberfun” concept all started twelve years ago with the very first Route 66 Marathon in 2006. Chris wanted to make sure all the participants in his race had the “time of their lives” no matter what their finishing time. Simply put, our races are organized by runners for runners. The focus is on fun and ensuring a unique race day experience unlike any other. If you’re returning to our race, you already know what’s in store for you on race day. If not, let me give you a sneak preview! You’ll start your race with a blast from a confetti cannon that goes off with each corral. If you’re in Corral D (our final corral), get ready to do “the wave!” The Williams Route 66 Marathon weekend is all about celebrating your accomplishments, and we do that in a variety of ways. First, we start with an exceptional, high-quality
5
WELCOME CONTINUED race premium. This year, all participants of the marathon and half marathon will receive a gender-specific full zip jacket made of technical wicking fabric (perfect for running)! Participants in the marathon relay will receive a full-zip hooded t-shirt jacket for the first time ever. Also, for the first time in our race’s history, we’re offering a long sleeve technical t-shirt to all participants of the 5k and Fun Run! Whether you’re crossing your first finish line or your fastest, we’re here to celebrate your accomplishment. If you don’t want your marathon to end, you’ve got an option – the Center of the Universe Detour! The crazy idea to add an extra 0.3-mile to the marathon as an option to run the “World’s Shortest Ultramarathon” was all Chris’s. You might even find a beer waiting for you at the end of the Detour, along with your World’s Shortest Ultramarathon finisher’s coin! The celebration continues at the finish line with what we think is our best finisher’s medal ever – this year’s Goddess of Speed! The third medal in our Goddess series, this year’s medal is inspired by the smooth lines and powerful beauty of classic 1930’s Packard automobiles and the speed and vigor of life on the historic Route 66. What can we say? We like to stay close to our roots! If you’re completing your first
6
marathon, you’ll receive a special “My First Marathon” finisher’s medal, while members of the 50 States Marathon Club, Marathon Maniacs, and Half Marathon Fanatics will receive special club finisher medals. I can’t take credit for those, either – that idea was Chris’s, too! It’s not just the race’s location on the historic Route 66 that makes this event special. We believe that our spectators – the City of Tulsa – are truly the best around! As you tour through Tulsa, you’ll explore the vibrant Art Deco architecture of downtown, the funky and hip Blue Dome District and Tulsa Arts District, Midtown’s chic neighborhoods, the cheering crowds of Brookside, the dance party on Cincinnati Street, and plenty more. Let’s just say that our neighborhoods know how to party, and there is no bigger party than race weekend. Don’t be surprised if our spectators offer you gummy bears, water, pretzels, or even jello shots (hint hint: mile 9) along the way! Tulsans are proud of our city and we can’t wait to welcome you. So, as you take your two-legged tour through Tulsa (say that five times fast!), no matter what race day brings or how fast or how slow you may feel, take a moment to soak it all in. Whether you’re hoping to finish your first 5k or looking to run your fastest marathon, we hope you’re as proud of yourself as we are of you. Of course, none of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of
of Tulsa as the place where your running dreams will come true! Remember, it’s not a sprint – it’s a marathon.
our sponsors, our board of directors, our volunteers, and of course, you - our participants! We can’t thank you all enough! Thank you for choosing the Williams Route 66 Marathon and the City

WILLIAMS ROUTE 66 MARATHON LEGACY RUNNERS When the Williams Route 66 Marathon was just slightly more than a twinkle in the eye of Executive Director Chris Lieberman, he opened up registration with a promise: the first 250 registrants would be assigned their number for life. Now in the 12th year of the event, Elite 250 members Brian Gebheart and Patty Powell have run every marathon since that inaugural event, and they plan to keep at it, lifetime numbers and all. Ten other marathon legacy runners have also completed the race each year and all vow to continue their streaks for as long as possible. Stephen Abernathy, who has also run all of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathons, says “My favorite part is seeing different parts of the Tulsa metro each race. The crowd support and entertainment is amazing as well. I would be remiss if I didn’t say I enjoy the Center of the Universe Detour, which I have taken every year since its inception and the beer stops all along the course!” A local run leader, Patty Powell, loves the camaraderie along the course and says, “The race has grown and improved so much over the last 11 years. The
medals and shirts get better every year, the finishers’ food area is fantastic, and the expo is one of the best! I plan to continue running every year that I am able.” Williams Route 66 Marathon pace group leader Kathryn White has also run the marathon every year while helping train other participants through Fleet Feet Tulsa’s training programs. A special part of the event for her is seeing her friends and trainees along the course, but she also appreciates the changes in the race over time. “Every year, the organizers have listened to participants to make improvements to the race. The course changes over the years have lessened the time on Riverside Drive and has also added some of the more scenic locations in Tulsa; Philbrook, University of Tulsa and Guthrie Green. While impressive from the start, the medals have become more ornate with specific ribbons for special groups who attend (Marathon/Half Marathon Maniacs and 50 State Club). Plus, there is enough beer for everyone!” It looks like the Williams Route 66 Marathon legacy runners show no signs of stopping, and we can’t say we blame them.

INFORMATION
The Williams Route 66 Marathon Relay is a five-leg relay event. The Marathon Relay will follow the same course as the Marathon. One runner can run more than one consecutive leg of the relay. However, each relay team must have between three and five participants. Mixed teams must have at least two female participants. All members of a team must be 40 or older for the Masters division.
RELAY EXCHANGE ZONES The Relay exchange zones will be clearly delineated with cones and fencing. As runners approach the relay exchange zones, relay runners will be directed to the right side of the course and Marathon and HalfMarathon runners will be directed to keep left.
RELAY TEAM MEMBERS MUST KEEP THE EXCHANGE ZONES AND THE MARATHON COURSE CLEAR. IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CROSS THE COURSE TO GET TO EXCHANGE ZONES 1 AND 3. RELAY PARTICIPANTS
MARATHON RELAY EXCHANGE ZONES – WHILE YOU’RE THERE Be aware of the conditions and dress appropriately for the wait. There will not be much in the way of shelter at the exchange zones. Water and portable restrooms will be available near each exchange zone. It would be a good idea to have a clothing bag for each exchange zone, so that the runner just finishing will have some warm, dry clothes when he/she is done running. The runner starting out on the new leg can leave his/her clothes in the bag for the teammate to take back to the start. However you work out the logistics, you are responsible for your own

RACE-DAY CANCELLATION, RACE ALTERATION POLICY AND WEATHER POLICY It is the primary goal of the Williams Route 66 Marathon to provide and ensure a safe event for participants, volunteers and community attendees alike. We will be diligent in not exposing the participants, the volunteers or the community at large to any undue risk in the production and/ or execution of the event. We understand the commitment the participants have made in entering the race, however, the decisions regarding race cancellations and/or alterations will be based on the larger community safety as well as the participants. Moreover, if community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress. When weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants as a whole, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alteration of the race and/or the race course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions fall under an “Act of God” — and will not result in refunding of any race entry fee or future race credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places large financial burden on the Williams Route 66 Marathon organization prior to the event date. Thus, in the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable that the financial impact on the race would not be any different than if the race was held without compromise.
46
The Williams Route 66 Marathon officials, along with City of Tulsa officials, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. Prior to the race, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will apprise the participants of the weather conditions and how the on-course flag system designation works. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will describe any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and Tulsa Police and other City of Tulsa officials will communicate throughout the race course to direct participants to safe shelters to await transportation back to the start and/or finish area.
WEATHER In regard to weather specifically, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has adopted the WBGT (Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for participation in endurance events, could result in cancellation of the event. WBGT is considered “the most practical heat stress index characterizing the effect of a heat stress environment on the individual.” WBGT was developed because the drybulb temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat, inasmuch as it does not take humidity and heat radiation into consideration.
WBGT is so-called because two of its input variables are wet-bulb temperature and a “black-globe” temperature; the third variable is the shielded dry-bulb temperature. The result of the WBGT will be indicated on a flag system that will be displayed at the start and finish area as well as at the medical stations along the race course. The flag color will indicate the safety conditions based on the WBGT readings. They are listed in the table below. At the starting line there will be a banner over the street. Suspended from that banner will be two flags, each 2'x3'. The flag color will reflect the heat stress at that moment. Gatorade stops will be stationed along the course. Gatorade stops will be flying a flag of a color corresponding to the heat stress at that time. The flag colors will change within 15 minutes of a change in the heat stress level. The staff at the Gatorade stop will know the meaning of each color flag.
The Williams Route 66 Marathon asserts that each participant assumes responsibility when entering an event with the potential risks that a marathon presents. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the Marathon and associated events. Furthermore, it strongly advises all participants to cooperate with directives given by Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and to assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when conditions are less than ideal. As the WBGT lowers in cold weather and EAS alerts go to yellow and/or red, it is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of hypothermia when conditions warrant.
Extreme conditions that are high risk already place a burden on community health care systems, including emergency medical transportation, as well as hospital emergency room capacity. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will not knowingly place the community in any such position that will place burden on overall community safety.

SUSTAINABILITY Much of the joy of running and walking is soaking in the natural beauty that surrounds us as we experience the seasons change, we hear the birds sing and we take time to appreciate the fresh air that fills our lungs. The Williams Route 66 Marathon works to protect these natural assets so future generations may also experience the same exhilarating feelings for many years to come. Thanks to the combined efforts of the board of directors, many community partners, environmentally minded race participants and fans, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has been recognized by ReSport for our sustainability efforts. This important designation is awarded by the Council for Responsible Sport and shows the Marathon’s continued commitment to preserving Tulsa’s natural beauty and resources while putting on a world-class endurance event.

BEST PLACES TO WATCH Everyone can be a part of the race-day excitement by choosing the perfect spot along the course to cheer for their favorite racer. And, since nothing gives racers a bigger energy boost than being cheered on along the way, you’ll want to figure out the best place(s) to spot your runner. With the finish line located at Guthrie Green in the Tulsa Arts District, fans will enjoy lining the District’s streets from First Street, through the Center of the Universe Detour, along Archer Street near Boulder Avenue to Cameron Street to see racers approach the finish line. This year’s finish line party at Guthrie Green will be one for the ages. Post-race festivities will include great music from the Guthrie Green stage, a car show, as well as plenty of other sights and sounds for all ages that include the broad range of Tulsa Arts District businesses that will be open and ready to serve racers and fans. For those looking to get out on the course to cheer, options abound for grabbing a cup of coffee, a bite to eat, or even a festive beverage while you settle in for a great day of road racing. Suggested cheering locations along the various courses are below. Please make note of street closures. We encourage fans to be respectful of area businesses and residents when choosing parking spaces and cheering locations.
ON THE MARATHON AND HALF-MARATHON COURSE: You can feel the electricity in the air as racers gather before the starting gun. Hear the national anthem and the see the confetti fly as participants begin their journey at the start line at Seventh and Main Streets.
Avenues, or Woodward Park at 21st Street and Peoria Avenue, for a truly beautiful fall racing experience. A perennial favorite among locals and visitors is Tulsa’s Brookside area located on Peoria Avenue between 33rd and 39th Streets. There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and the like to ply you with whatever you need to get your pipes warmed up to cheer for your participant.
ON THE MARATHON COURSE (MILES 13–25.5): If a little weekend brunch with a super-hip vibe to match is what you’re looking for, you’re in luck with several excellent spots to choose from. MORE than runners. Behind every great event there’s an army of volunteers and the Williams Route 66 Marathon is no exception. For years, Williams employees Danielle and Carmela have led our volunteer efforts as runners seek quick refreshment at our water and entertainment stop, located mid-way along the full marathon course. Danielle’s team will again welcome passing participants with water and Gatorade®, as Carmela’s band provides high-charging music that inspires runners to carry on and log their personal best. From the water stop to year-round race planning and implementation, more than 50 volunteers from Williams are helping behind the scenes and we couldn’t be prouder of our runners and volunteers. Welcome to Tulsa, and best wishes to all of the Williams Route 66 participants!
