LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
MARY MUSE Welcome home!
We are “shaking it up a bit” this year! We’ve brought in some great entertainers to emcee the Kennedy Theater shows; I am truly looking forward to listening as author Tamara Saviano, interviews one of the greatest songwriters from Texas, during “An Intimate Afternoon with Rodney Crowell” on Friday, June 7th at Threadgill Theater; and, for the first time, we are offering “Harmonica for Health,” a program designed for folks with COPD to learn how to use harmonica playing as therapy. We love to say, “It can be this way always.” One of our Kerrville family recently said to me, “I came for the music and fell in love with the community.” There is much in this Community I hope never changes: • May we always be a Community where acceptance and kindness make creativity and vulnerability safe; • May we always be a Community filled with love for each other and the shared experiences the Kerrville Folk Festival has created in our lives; • May we always be a Community of great vision, passion, and commitment to the Kerrville Folk Festival and its home – Quiet Valley Ranch; and • May we always be a Community committed to conveying these experiences to generations that follow. To sustain these values we hold sacred, some change is necessary. I know some are fearful and reluctant to change, while others –also driven by their love of the festival – are impatient for change. I am convinced we must be willing to embrace healthy change while tempering that drive with patience and thoughtful reverence for what we hold most dear. Together, it is within our power to continue this festival as long as we are committed to nurturing and evolving it. I’m glad you have joined us for this, the 48th Kerrville Folk Festival, and “stay tuned” as we make announcements about the first ever, “Welcome Home Fest,” slated for Oct. 11 – 13, 2019. If you believe supporting songwriters is important, and if you value this community please become a Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation member and make it YOUR Festival! Filled with great hope,
Mary Muse

LETTER FROM THE PRODUCER
DALIS ALLEN Welcome back to the Festival for the 48th time! Glad you’re here. You will be hearing many of our Festival favorites this year but also quite a few ‘new to Kerrville’ artists. An eclectic lineup for your listening pleasure... It is the 40th Anniversary of ‘Heal In the Wisdom’. The author Bobby Bridger and his son Gabe will lead us on the last Sunday. It is also the 5th anniversary of Rod Kennedy’s passing. We, and we hope all of you, will be wearing RodFather t-shirts for the anthem. If you don’t already have one, they will be available at the t-shirt booth. Let the music and magic begin! Love,
Dalis

The painting titled “Music Lifts the Spirit” is acrylic on canvas, and was inspired by the Flammarion engraving created in 1888 by an unknown artist. Vanessa, in addition to doing graphic design for the Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation, is also a songwriter, fine artist, and founder of a non-profit music program in Austin, TX called Home Street Music. KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL 2019
CAMPGROUND RULES CAMPGROUND ACCESS: Everyone must have a wristband in order to enter the campgrounds during the festival. Wristbands must be worn on the wrist at all times. Broken wristbands may be exchanged at the ticket booth. The entire broken band must be surrendered to get a replacement. VEHICLE RULES: SPEED LIMIT - Ranch speed limit is FIVE (5) MILES PER HOUR. This applies to all vehicles including golf carts, tractors, and even bicycles. This is for safety and to keep the dust down. If you see dust in your rearview mirror you are going too fast! GOLF CARTS – Each year we see more and more golf carts on the ranch. Golf carts must observe the 5 mph rule. Do not overload golf carts. One person is allowed per seat. Standing on side bars or hanging off the back is not allowed. NO HORSEPLAY ON GOLF CARTS! BICYCLES – No one under 12 may ride a bike on the ranch during the festival. Any cyclists under 18 must wear a helmet. Bike riding is only allowed on ranch roads, not in any grassy areas or on hills. Bikes must observe the 5 mph speed limit. ILLEGALLY PARKED VEHICLES - Unauthorized or non-permitted vehicles in the campgrounds will be towed at the owner’s expense. Any vehicles blocking roads may be towed without notice. GENERAL RULES: AGE – No one under 18 years of age may camp without a parent our legal guardian present. TRASH AND GEAR – Campers are responsible for the trash in their area. Please make sure that all garbage is properly disposed of in the provided, lined trash barrels. Recycle bins are available throughout the campgrounds. IF YOU BROUGHT IT IN, TAKE IT WITH YOU WHEN YOU LEAVE! THIS GOES DOUBLE FOR PALLETS, BLOCKS, AND FURNITURE!!! PETS* – PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE RANCH DURING THE FESTIVAL. *Service Animals - we do allow trained, certified "Service Animals" as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act. "Emotional Support" animals ARE NOT covered under the ADA and therefore WILL NOT be allowed. SMOKING – Smoking is not allowed within 20 feet of any porch or covered structure. This includes the Kerrtry store, crafts or food booths, and festival offices. PLEASE DO NOT THROW CIGARETTE BUTTS ON THE GROUND! ALCOHOL – Alcohol consumption by adults of legal age is allowed (during legal drinking hours), although loud, disruptive or violent behavior resulting from intoxication will not be tolerated. It is the responsibility of the camper / tenant to enforce underage drinking laws among all members of their group. Since we are under a beer license in the campgrounds, all TABC rules regarding legal drinking hours must be observed. Public consumption and display of alcohol in common areas such as roads, theater areas, or the Kerrtry Store (not counting your immediate vicinity of your RV or campsite) is prohibited by state law during the following hours: Monday – Saturday, midnight to 7 a.m.; Sunday, 1 a.m. to noon. CELL PHONES – Cell phone use is prohibited in the seating areas of both the Kennedy Outdoor Theater and the Threadgill Theater. Please silence your phone when the music begins. “Selfie sticks” are prohibited in both the Kennedy and Threadgill Theaters.
LOUD, BOISTEROUS, OR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR – We want everyone to have a good time, but please be considerate of others. The odd “howl at the moon” is permitted, but there is no need for incessant screaming. No stereos or recorded music are allowed in the campgrounds at any time during the festival. No Public Nudity. Public display and/or use of illegal substances are strictly prohibited. Amplified instruments are not permitted. NO DRUMS! PERSONAL CONDUCT – We are a community. Each and every person is entitled to respectful and equitable treatment by others. We should all act responsibly toward one another. Mental, verbal, physical or sexual abuse (or unwanted sexual advances) by guests or staff WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and may result in a permanent ban from the festival and/ or the Quiet Valley Ranch. Always respect each other and each other’s property. Fighting and other forms of violence are not allowed. Know where your kids, and any other kids in your group, are playing at all times! SECURING YOUR CAMP – Make sure your tents, canopies, etc. are tied down and secured against the wind and elements. Sudden gusts of wind can roar through the campgrounds at any time that can turn an aluminum poled canopy into a deadly projectile. Tents and or other gear should not be left unattended for too long. If you go home during the mid-weeks, you should break down your tents and campsite. RESPECTING THE RANCH – Maintaining the natural beauty of the Quiet Valley Ranch is important to us. Altering, defacing or damaging the property is prohibited. Cutting of trees or shrubs is not allowed. DO NOT DRIVE NAILS OR SCREWS INTO LIVE TREES! DO NOT TIE OR LEAN ANYTHING ON TO LIVE TREES! Digging, grading, building, or the planting of anything without prior consent of the campground management is prohibited. If you need trimming or grounds maintenance performed in your area, call J.C. Hammond, Ranch Manager at 956-346-1143. Do not tie or lean anything on fences. Do not climb over any fences onto adjacent property. Do not break or modify the erosion control terraces or berms. PEST CONTROL – The use of poisons or insecticides by campers / tenants is prohibited. The use of diatomaceous earth is allowed. If you need ant or pest control performed in your camping area, visit Ranch Central (next to the Mix Master campground entrance). CAMPFIRES – Open fires should be within fire rings, BBQ grills, or outdoor type fireplaces. LARGE BONFIRES ARE NOT ALLOWED! Please keep fires small. Fires are not allowed during periods of excessive drought or when Kerr County has issued a county wide burn ban. During periods of a burn ban, only charcoal fires in BBQ grills are allowed. Gathering of firewood on the property is not permitted. Firewood, if available, can usually be found near the Kerrtry store behind the campground showers. Do not burn fires under trees, branches, or next to wooden structures. Fires MUST be attended at all times, and must be completely extinguished before retiring for the night or departing the campsite. Share fires when possible. FIREARMS – Due to our beer license, firearms are not permitted on the ranch even if the owner has a legal permit. FIRST AID – We have medical professionals on duty 24 hours a day. The First Aid center is located at the east end of the Kennedy Theater food pavilion. If needed, First Aid can be requested through one of our ranch Peace-Keepers (Security). They wear red shirts. UNAUTHORIZED SOLICITORS – The selling of food, beverages, merchandise, or services is prohibited in both the theater and the campgrounds, except for registered vendors. LOST AND FOUND – located in Ranch Central by the Mix Master campground entrance. DRONE FLIGHTS – are prohibited without written approval from the Festival Office.

TEXAS CRAFT BEER SEMINAR “PAIRING BEER WITH FOOD” SATURDAY JUNE 1, 5-6PM THREADGILL THEATER $15/person (includes a souvenir festival glass) With so many different styles of beer and even seasonal beers to take into account, it can be difficult to come up with good pairings for every beer on a restaurant's or bar's beer list. It is worth the effort to do a little research and you’ll find that beer can be an excellent alternative to wine.
The Mammals
(Hudson Valley, NY)
When pairing beer and food, it all comes down to matching the food’s flavors to the flavors of the beers. In this program we go directly to the experts to get their advice on mating the best brews with complementary favorite bites. Join our host (and KFF Foundation Board Member) Tom “Beerbo” Witanek who will lead a panel consisting of four of Texas’ top brew masters from Southern Star Brewery, Independence Brewery, Real Ale Brewery and Kerrville’s own Pint & Plow Brewing Company. We’ll be serving different types of beers ranging from a crisp Mexican Lager to a bold Belgian Porter. Information on the exact beers and pairings can be found at the Festival Office, the Kennedy Theater Beer or Wine Booths. Pre-paid registration is required. Attendees must also have a Festival ticket (valid wristband) for Saturday June 1. Registration is limited to 100 people. Tickets are available online or at the Festival Wine Booth in the Kennedy Outdoor Theater during the Memorial Day weekend evening concerts. Seating will start at roughly 4:45PM and the seminar will begin at 5PM. No late arrivals please.

FEATURED STORY KERR-PIPHANIES
BY STEVE BROOKS I still remember the night, and I still remember the song. I had pulled into my first Kerrville Folk Festival that afternoon, making camp down by Coho. After dark, I went prowling around the meadow, and I ducked under a canopy when I heard music coming from underneath. An older fellow was doing some fancy fingerpicking while several others listened intently. Over his guitar came an unadorned voice that was soft and passionate at the same time, compressing a lifetime of experience into a handful of verses. Ed Florida sang with the timeless cadences of a Woody Guthrie dust bowl ballad, a simple story about a dispossessed Panhandle farmer: “There’s a wind blows through West Texas like West Texas wasn’t there.” It was the kind of song I had driven 500 miles to seek. It was also my first Kerrville moment. Or as I sometimes call them, Kerr-piphanies. Almost 30 years later, those Kerr-piphanies are what stick with me the most. I’ve made lifelong friendships, absorbed the craft of songwriting from the hands of masters, fallen in and out of love more times than I could count and found a folk network that’s carried me coast to coast. But after all these years, one tends to blur into another. What stands out for me are those moments when the clock seems to stop and I catch a little glimpse of eternity. It might be sitting around a roaring campfire, tilting my head backwards as sparks go dancing up to the stars. It might be climbing to Crow’s Nest to watch the sunrise on Day 19. It might be swapping songs in Kamp Kantigree with our feet in a wading pool or jamming with David Amram under the big top at Camp Stupid. It might be the inspired tomfoolery of a watermelon sacrifice or a formal tasting for screw-top wines. There’s something about Kerrville that promotes such moments. Creative energy that’s thicker than dust, Hill Country beauty and libidos running wild, all polished to a hallucinogenic edge from running for days on little sleep. I never know when one of those Kerr-piphanies will strike. I just know that it will, several times each festival. And that as it takes its place among decades of memories, I’ll be thinking, “It can be this way, always.”

FEATURED STORY CAMPGROUND GET-AROUND
BY HOWIE RICHEY
Welcome to fest! If you’ve long attended mainstage concerts but not seen the campground, discovery awaits. Inside this program is a map, hand-drawn by yours truly, that will help you navigate these 20 acres of Quiet Valley Ranch. Don sturdy footwear for this rugged terrain, and bring a flashlight if it’s night. Exit via the theater’s east gate. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, head straight up the High Road. Along Fenceline Heights, the ranch soars to 1,850 feet. Pass the Ladder Day Ain’ts, and off a sharp drop you’ll see roofs of big RVs. Next comes Leopard Lounge, with its distinctive bar and sign. At the peak of Sumac Ridge, the road plummets towards Kidsville. In front of you is Crow’s Nest, a longstanding campfire named for singer-songwriter Crow Johnson. Adjacent is Camp Patchouli, dating from 1987. Though the setup straddles the path, you’re encouraged to walk through. Two teepees introduce Camps Peace of Mind and Skyhigh and a sweeping view of Turtle Creek Valley. Step carefully as you descend past Camp Nekkid and Camp Slightly More Modest.
About the author: Howie Richey, mayor of award-winning Camp Patchouli, marks 40 years since his 1979 Kerrversion. Please join him on a Sunday morning habitat hike around the ranch.
Suddenly, you’re at Threadgill Theater, the campground’s major venue. Unlike Kennedy, this arena features a roof. Sundown Concerts and workshops happen here on weekdays, and sundry performances occur on weekends. Nearby are food trucks and a restroom. Around Threadgill’s sits the Big Meadow. Stroll by Camp Bite Me and Camp Cuisine to a bridge over Sudden Creek, which appears abruptly after a good rainstorm. Stairs lead to the ultraspiritual Chapel Hill. Trunks and branches of the former Ballad Tree form a stage, where a thousand new tunes have been heard. Linger here for daily song sharing, and return Sunday morning for the folk service. Down Chapel Hill’s far side lies the Lower Meadow, anchored by Camp Coho. Pass Camp Jews Don’t Camp (of course they do, here) with its constantly running bread ovens and free samples. Turn right at the black walnut tree, recross Sudden Creek, and you’re again in the Big Meadow. On your right are Camp Inertia, more teepees, and Phat Jack’s Domino Parlor. Tradition runs deep in these decades-old communities, and many maintain their own revels. Beyond Camp Bayou Love is the Crossroads, and a little farther are showers and octojohns, then the Kerrtry Store circle: KerrKafé, Staff Rekerrds, and Kidsville. Grab a beverage and relax in the shade or moonlight. Across the way, Merrville schedules after-hours showcases. Beyond Sunrise Strip be MixMaster, the principal campground gateway, and Ranch Central. Behind grows the Council Tree, a favorite conversation spot near other camps. Up the lane you’ll see your starting point. Your loop is completed!

KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL 2019
A Gift of Love For You and the Whole World! Legendary Singer/Songwriter Sankarshan Das from Austin, Texas has composed an extraordinary song called “The Peace Formula” based on the profoundest wisdom from ancient times when Planet Earth was blessed with perfect peace and happiness. This revolutionary song, which was very much appreciated by Barack Obama when he was US president, can, if widely popularized, inundate our greatly troubled planet with a wondrous tidal wave of peace. Sankarshan Das thus circles the globe twice a year to spread “The Peace Formula” all over the world. Check out “The Peace Formula” music video at www.ThePeaceFormula.com and arrange for him to sing for your government, educational, and spiritual leaders as well as at all types of institutions and gatherings: universities, schools, offices, houses of worship, meetings, parties, picnics, rallies, festivals, concerts, etc.

MUSIC CAMP FOR TEENS THE KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL FOUNDATION AND THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF CENTRAL TEXAS PRESENT: Music Camp for Teens Music Camp for Teens is cooperatively produced by the Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Texas. All music oriented or interested youth between the ages of 13 and 18 may attend. The 2019 camp is scheduled for July 21-25, 2019. Campers arrive on Sunday, July 21 between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. and stay through Thursday, July 25 at 10 a.m. The camp is held at Quiet Valley Ranch, site of the Kerrville Folk festival, 9 miles south of Kerrville on Texas State Highway 16. It is designed to provide youth, 13 to 18 years of age, with a quality music camp that helps them find their own sound and voice. The primary objectives of the Camp are having fun, building selfesteem, providing new experiences, teaching positive leisure time activities, and integrating music with developing leadership skills. Although the event expenses are approximately $300 per participant, attendees pay only $50 ($75 after June 15th); which is why contributions are so very important to sustain this amazing program! Each year 70+ youth and 30 adult volunteers and staff gather at Quiet Valley Ranch to experience this unique opportunity to camp, to engage in nature, canoe down the river, see old friends, meet new friends, and learn from professional poets, songwriters, and musicians. Each day the youth participate in sessions, and work one-on-one with professional staff to create poetry, lyrics, and songs, and each night have the opportunity to get up on stage at Threadgill Theater and share their creative endeavors, whether a song, a dance, a poem, a lyric, or just a beat, in a safe and supportive venue. Youth learn to write their own songs, performing techniques and performing skills. We are influenced by everything around us and this program helps kids get back to the basics, and find their own VOICE and their own SOUND, and to realize that it’s okay to be an individual. Kerrville Folk Festival and Texas Arts & Craft Fair – Together Again! Against a backdrop of the beautiful Guadalupe River, more than 5,000 attendees are expected to visit the 2019 Texas Arts and Craft Fair, Sept. 28-29 in Ingram, Texas. This one-of-a-kind art festival is the Official State Arts and Crafts Fair of Texas and raises awareness as well as critical funding for the Hill Country Arts Foundation. Through sponsorships, we provide a venue for Texas artisans to sell their artwork. This event funds vital arts programs that educate, enrich, and enlighten the community through the arts. In 1971, the Texas Tourist Development Agency announced plans for a new Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair in Kerrville. The Governor’s Office contacted Rod Kennedy and asked him to create a music event to complement the fair. In 1972, these two iconic Kerrville events kicked off together. In 2014, the Hill Country Arts Foundation assumed ownership of the fair. This year, the Kerrville Folk Festival will be returning to its beginnings by partnering once again with the Texas State Arts & Crafts Fair. To celebrate, the Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation, the Hill Country Arts Foundation, and Schreiner University are joining forces to present a spectacular musical event on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the beautiful, outdoor 500-seat Point Theater, on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Ingram. The “Legacy Concert” features The Limeliters and the Sentimental Journey Orchestra. For those of you who have attended the Kerrville Folk Festival for many years, you may recall one of the several times the Limeliters performed at the Festival. Today’s version of this classic folk trio is comprised of three outstanding songwriters and performers who are all beloved members of our Festival community: Andy Corwin, Steve Brooks and Daniel Boling. The concert will be reserved seating with tickets priced at $25 and $35. A VIP Package, which includes tickets to the concert and dinner before the show will be available for $60. Tickets go on sale June, 1, 2019 and may be purchased online at hcaf.com. Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2019, the Hill Country Arts Foundation is committed to providing the community with highquality visual and theatre arts. The Texas Arts and Craft Fair gives the foundation a platform to showcase the comprehensive programs offered and share success stories to thousands of ears and eyes. As the only facility of its kind in the region, the Hill Country Arts Foundation stands out as a vital resource in the community. If you are not from the area and would like to attend this show and the fair, make a reservation now for a Quiet Valley Ranch RV Spot ($15 a night) or for tent camping on the Ranch ($5 a night.) *Call Quiet Valley Ranch: (800) 257-3600

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF: “HEAL IN THE WISDOM” KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL ANTHEM FOR 40 YEARS Composed by Bobby Bridger The story goes, on May 25, 1979 Bobby Bridger was backstage with Jon Inmon at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Bobby was playing Jon a new song he wrote in memory of two friends who had recently died. Rod heard it and was moved by it. He told Bobby he was interested in naming the song the Festival’s anthem. Bobby told him he was going to debut the song in his set that night and that he would be honored if Rod chose it. The audience's response cinched it, and Heal in the Wisdom has been the Festival’s anthem since the first time it was played here. That was forty years ago. Tonight we are thrilled to have Bobby Bridger back to perform it as we close out the 48th Kerrville Folk Festival. 2019 FESTIVAL EMCEES WEEKEND 1: OLIVER STECK Oliver Steck is an Austin Music Awards-winning multi-instrumentalist "who plays keyboards, accordion, trumpet and assorted whistles and horns...(Bob) Schneider notes, 'Oliver also does a lot of dancing. He doesn’t necessarily get paid for the dancing. He does it because he can’t not.' Randy Erickson LaCrosse Tribune
WEEKEND 2: CHRIS CHANDLER "Chris Chandler, a true man of the road who has worked with a who's who of the American political-folk scene, including Allen Ginsberg, Ani DiFranco, Pete Seeger and Mojo Nixon... Don't expect a typical folkie. Chandler has been called "a performance poet" whose wordy creations owe as much to the traditions of theater and slam poetry as to music. If he had been born in another time, Chandler would have been a roaming minstrel or an edgy court jester." Marianne Myer The Washington Post
WEEKEND 3: JENA KIRKPATRICK “Meet the full-of-life wordsmith and lover-of-people Jena Kirkpatrick. The poet who writes beautifully assembled poetry within minutes. Poetry dominates her being. Her teaching is fundamental: Write. It is the essence of communication, but do it with feeling.” Ricardo Gándara Austin American Statesman

2018-2019 QUIET VALLEY RANCH WEDDINGS October 2018, Chris & Sarah Shotliff April 2019, James & Joyce Pearce Both were beautiful occasions! Following are photos and excerpts of their ceremonies. Chris & Sarah Sarah and Chris first became friends in the hallways of their high school nearly 20 years ago in Minnesota. However, it wasn't until more recent years that their love for each other blossomed into what it is now. Largely thanks to the Kerrville Folk Festival, the joy of creating music forged a strong bond between them. By joining the volunteer community on Quiet Valley Ranch, they found their calling of service. By supporting each other their efforts can go much further than they ever could alone. James & Joyce It is no coincidence that this ceremony is being held on the hallowed grounds of the Historic Kerrville Folk Festival. Because music is a love language that James and Joyce both passionately speak and share with those around them. Being tucked in this place where music and love practically seeps out of the ground… you can almost hear their favorite singer-songwriter John Prine singing…‘Jealousy and stupidity don't equal harmony.’ The music masters that have played on these sacred stages, know that harmonies…the careful joining and blending of two individually unique voices…doesn’t just happen overnight. Harmonies are worked at…diligently over time. The love song of James and Joyce…is 5 years in the making. Along the way, there have been some perfect pitches and notes that went flat. Perhaps there were some words that were played too loud, or feelings left unsung. But each day, they chose to play it again. Because they know, that it is only with time, effort, perseverance, patience, grace, kindness, and love...that harmonious music and marriages are made.
